Yes this is a PSP game. No this isn't a handheld game site. Sometimes a game just screams 'Western RPG' so loudly that we decide to take a look. Join Michael Anderson as he works his way through this turn-based 'tactics' game one grid-step at a time in our giant review:

Perhaps the greatest and most immediately apparent strength of D&D Tactics is the brand itself - the game sets out to bring a pure AD&D experience to the PSP that is as close to the tabletop game as possible, with the PSP as DM and you as the adventurers. The game makes the interesting choice of not adopting any of the classic lands already established in AD&D lore but instead opens a new area to explore and define as their own. Your story takes place in a border region between the feudal peoples of the Lendesi and the tribal clans of the Vinsaxi. The region contains all of the usual terrain types, towns and dungeons of any classic fantasy tale, and as the story unfolds you will either be tasked or find opportunities to explore all of the possible areas. The use of a new area allows the developers to carve out their own method for telling the story without feeling beholden to existing terrain boundaries or clan borders, and it works pretty well. You will not be so smitten that you will be clambering for new tales in this land, but neither will you have issues with choices made that clash with years of established history for the other regions.

D&D Tactics - Various reviews @ Gamebanshee

Gamebanshee gives some links to an assortment of reviews of Atari's latest Dungeons and Dragons franchise release,  D & D Tactics for the PSP. They run the gamut from favorable to disenchanted, like this one from Game Informer:

 Previous attempts at translating the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop experience to video games (like Dark Alliance or Neverwinter Nights) have had to make certain concessions to be playable. D&D: Tactics hardly makes any, and as a result, feels like you are playing with the worst DM ever.

RPGWatch Feature: D&D Tactics Preview

While turn-based CRPG fans fall into depair at the lack of releases, the handheld market might be the place to go. Mike Anderson looks at D&D Tactics for the PSP and speaks to senior producer Lawrence Liberty in a short interview:

Of course the obvious feature prominent in the game is tactical turn-based combat. This is where the bulk of the game is spent - you can explore the terrain freely, but as soon as you encounter enemies you switch to a turn-based system in which you might be caught flat-footed or gain an attack of opportunity or other things that can only happen in a D&D game. Combat rounds begin with calculating initiative and then move right into each player getting turns to move, use items or engage in combat. You have the ability to create several different types of characters - from the standard Warrior and Mage to the oft-overlooked Psion and Psychic Warrior, obviously imbued with the neglected Psionics skills.

Those who read The Whole Game in My Hand may have already seen this article but if not, it's worth a look - especially if you've avoided handhelds in the past.

D&D Tactics - Interview @ RPG Vault

We've probably been remiss in not covering this handheld PSP game previously because the D&D license and turn-based combat puts in squarely in an area of, RPG Vault has an interview with lead designer Lee Brimmicombe-Wood from Kuju (who developed the MP aspect of Dark Messiah among other things):

Jonric: To begin with an introduction to D&D: Tactics, what kind of game is it, and what's the current status of development?

Lee Brimmicombe-Wood:
D&D Tactics is a turn-based tactics game. We felt this format was best suited to reproducing the feel of the tabletop game as it closely follows the combat rules in the Player's Handbook. We began the project back at the beginning of 2006 and the game is currently in submission with Sony.
