Eastward - Review @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 12:04

PC Gamer reviewed Eastward:

Eastward review

Spirited Away.

Set in a world where humanity clings to pockets of civilization, Eastward takes inspiration from old RPGs and the likes of Earthbound, Zelda, and Studio Ghibli films to create beautifully desolate locations filled with a mix of puzzles and action. Despite looking like a pixelated old-school RPG it's utterly gorgeous, cramming detail into each environment just like a Ghibli movie. It's so much a tribute to the famed Japanese animation studio that you can find a version of Hayao Miyazaki himself hiding out in the starting town of Potcrock Isle.

Eastward follows John, a silent miner who uses a frying pan both for cooking and hitting people, and Sam, a young girl with white hair (which is how you know she's mysterious). The two develop a father-daughter-like relationship as they eke out a living in the underground town of Potcrock Isle, but when they're exiled to the wastelands of the surface world, they discover that things up top aren't what they seemed. It takes a little while to get going, but really starts to take off when you leave the first area and deeper mysteries are introduced.

[...]

As a tribute to RPGs of the '90s, Eastward is wonderful, with an atmosphere to be savoured. However, while the central mystery is captivating, it doesn’t quite nail bringing all of the different threads together, leaving a few plot holes open at the end. It also struggles to keep up the momentum and characters sometimes feel overwritten. I've enjoyed basking in sun-dappled forests and cowering in abandoned subway stations, but I was also willing certain bits to just get on with it. Eastward was never going to reach the same heights as its inspirations, but it makes a commendable effort.

Score: 78/100

Eastward - Review @ Eurogamer

by Hiddenx, 15:12

Henriquejr spotted this Eastward review from Eurogamer:

Eastward review - beautiful Zelda-like RPG captures the spirit of the Japanese classics

Asian fusion.

A strong love for storytelling and the feel of games like Earthbound makes Eastward shine even where the gameplay flags.

With so much competition out there in the world of games, those first few attention-grabbing screenshots have maybe never been so important. Without wanting to sound cynical, Chinese developer Pixpil sure knew what they were doing in that regard - the first time I saw Eastward back in 2019 it immediately seared itself into my brain. A giant house, seemingly completely built out of driftwood, framed by nothing but the purest cerulean sky. There is so much detail to this one house - the discolouration of the wood, its crooked windows, boards sticking out left and right. Of course good visuals don't make a good game, and yet this attention to detail tells me so much about Eastward

[...]

Eastward is never a copy, often a homage, something that extends to its twists and turns that I won't spoil here - though I will say that the post-apocalyptic setting is more than window dressing, and be warned the story does go to some dark places. The pacing to get there might be a little off at points, but there's so much to recommend besides. I came for the beautiful visuals, and I stayed for the type of kind, warm game not many developers make anymore.

Eastward - Preview @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 18:24

PC Gamer checked out the upcoming Adventure-RPG Eastward:

Eastward takes a trip back to the golden age of Asian RPGs

Inspired by Akira, Macross, and works by Studio Ghibli.

One look at Eastward, and you can immediately tell what made the pixel art aficionados at Chucklefish fall in love with it. From colourful environments filled with detail to the unique characters softly bouncing with each breath, Eastward feels alive, even though it's set in a world that's anything but.

With Eastward, developer Pixpil has decided to go all out—the first project for the Shanghai-based team is looking to Japanese RPGs from the late '80s and early '90s for inspiration, a genre that originated enduring videogame characters and approaches to adventure gameplay. You take control of John and Sam, a taciturn miner and a small girl with a magnificent mane of white hair. Together they travel a post-apocalyptic world. Pixpil is staying as tight-lipped as John about any plot details, but they did let slip that the fact that Sam uses magic makes her someone really special.
