Empyreal is Almost a Roguelite, Light
Even when I’m not trying to play a roguelite I seem to end up with one. At least in a slight fashion. Though Empyreal doesn’t call itself that, I could see some similarity. Besides, you had me at loot and dungeon crawler. Check out my thoughts on this new one below.

Final Thoughts
Empyreal is a solid dungeon crawler with a complex and engaging core gameplay loop. It allows the player to build a character that suits their playstyle and a familiar, visible path for progression. Anyone that enjoys 3rd person ARPGs should really pick this one up.

It would be a shame to award it anything less than the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.

In the past few years, the action role-playing game genre has changed quite a bit. Following the explosion in popularity of FromSoftware's Souls series, a rather large number of development studios created their own take on the formula, some of them succeeding at providing a compelling experience, others not so much. No matter the quality of individual games, however, the proliferation of Soulslike games is leading to stagnation in the ARPG genre, as the formula is essentially becoming synonymous with it. Thankfully, there are still development studios out there willing to ignore a pre-established formula, no matter how popular, and do their own thing, like Silent Games with their upcoming Empyreal.

Demo Coming to Steam Next Fest

It’s official: your journey into Empyreal begins this month when our first playable demo arrives during Steam Next Fest.

To get you ready for your expedition into the Monolith, Silent Games has released the first episode of its behind-the-scenes series. Co-founders Joseph Rogers (Creative Director) and Sally Blake (CEO) are joined by Finlay McDonald (Gameplay Programmer) as they explore the mysterious Monolith on a hitherto unexplored world, and explain how you'll be fighting ancient automatons and searching for long-forgotten secrets in the upcoming demo.

"Empyreal is a true RPG and is meant to be explored with that level of depth. The three distinct playstyles are supported by over 50 different abilities and hundreds of stats. With dozens of armour sets and cosmetic items on offer, there's going to be a lot of customisation options available to players to find and refine what works for them."

There’s a lot to explore in the Empyreal Steam Next Fest demo, including the chance to try out all three weapon archetypes and a selection of armour sets and abilities. Players will be able to explore two distinct locations and even get an early peek at some late-game gear for a taste of the rarer loot waiting to be discovered when the full game launches later in 2025.
