Old School is Cool Again in Geneforge 1 Mutagen RPG - Gameindustry.com

[...]

Do not get me wrong folks, I don’t pretend to go political here (Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman breakup! Oh no! -lol), but we’re talking about a year that changed everything for the vast majority of us earthlings. And that, my friends, feels more like an omen because this is what Geneforge 1-Mutagen is all about. We are in front of a unique game released back in 2001. Spiderweb Software decided to remake it, and now, after 20 years, the Geneforge series is back again.

The world of RPGs is huge, but Mutagen is definitely one of those games that gives the player the opportunity to decide virtually everything, not only the character and their features, even the same classes can be shaped as we please. Yes, you can go throughout the game without killing an enemy, you can build up an army of creatures or grow up a huge one, I mean, it feels more like a sandbox.

[...]

I won’t spoil you the story because I find it one of the best parts of this game, honestly, I recommend you to read every piece of it you encounter and I promise you won’t regret it. But if you’re wondering if you should try this game which in fact is old, the short answer is YES! Go for it! I know it isn’t visually appealing, but I promise you the story, how you can shape virtually everything, and the multiple endings are not only unique, but rewarding as well.

Spiderweb Software has done a great remake of this game, graphics are way better and support for different platforms (specially for iPad), makes it a great game to play everywhere.

Ok now! It is time to make some pets and grab a drink to tell you, my family… Enjoy your gaming weekend and let me know in the comments your experience with Geneforge 1-Mutagen! This is Sumroad signing out from the paradisiac beaches of Sucia Island! Ciao!

Geneforge 1 - Mutagen - Review @ TBL

Geneforge 1 – Mutagen Review

Nearly 20 years after the release of Geneforge 1 to Macs, Jeff Vogel has done a bit of gene-forging himself and rewritten all the little scrolls that made up that CRPG classic. Updated for contemporary machines and audiences, Geneforge 1 – Mutagen is a remaster of the first game in the Geneforge series, bringing in new mechanics, new stories, and high-resolution graphics.

In Mutagen you play a "Shaper", a member of the controlling sociopolitical class whose might is predicated on their ability to create life from a magical-organic substance called Essence.

Having been sent out on your first mission as an apprentice, you are shipwrecked on a restricted island after a foreign vessel shoots down your living boat. Quickly after arriving, you discover a series of canisters of goop with syringe-like needles on top – and using them to inject yourself grants you magical power far beyond what you had access to back on the mainland.

Newly juiced and ready to party, your tasks are three-fold: discover why Sucia Island was restricted (or "Barred" in Shaper-speak), find out who shot your ship and what they want from you, and figure out what’s going on with the three sects of Serviles who have been living on the island since Sucia was abandoned.

[...]

SUMMARY
Mutagen is a thorough rework, update, and expansion of the CRPG classic Geneforge 1. Extensive mechanical reworks, combined with a contemporary UI, grid combat system, and increased graphical fidelity have spruced G1 up to the standards of contemporary play, and have preserved the excellent story and concepts of G1 for many years to come.

Score: 9/10
