Gordian Quest Review - Novel Deckbuilder with Tactical Gameplay & RPG Elements [1.0 Full Release]

Let's talk about Gordian Quest, which is a fun and unique card game roguelite that has complicated RPG elements and tactical combat. There are a lot of different systems to play around with and buildcraft with, but there can also be a sense of system overload. That being said, I think this game is still a great deckbuilder roguelite or roguelike for those looking for a new take on the genre. So let's get into it.

Gordian Quest - Review @ COG

by Hiddenx, 16:15

COG has reviewed the deckbuilder Gordian Quest:

Gordian Quest Review

Gordian Quest is described as being inspired by classics like Dungeons and Dragons and Ultima. Like those games, it’s quite easy to describe but much tougher to fully understand. Aside from the aforementioned inspirations, elements from other video games appear to have an influence as well. As a deckbuilding RPG, it’s hard to avoid being influenced by other games. Especially when so many of your features have been done so well before.

Gordian Quest features a few different game modes: Campaign Mode, Realm Mode, Adventure Mode, and Skirmish Mode. Campaign Mode is what you might expect, a story-focused mode that spans four Acts. Realm Mode is more fast-paced – think of it as a rogue-lite mode. This rogue-lite homage features both a Quick Run and an Endless Run variant. Adventure Mode is an end-game mode focused on procedurally generated content and solo challenges. Lastly, Skirmish Mode is a competitive 1 v 1 mode.

[...]

Overall, Gordian Quest does a great job in implementing various gameplay elements and making them work together. While the Campaign Mode could have featured a better narrative and variety of activities, it still serves as a good entry point in the game as a long tutorial of sorts. From there, the game features a lot of replayability due to the number of classes and skills. As a deckbuilding RPG, Gordian Quest does a great job with the deckbuilding portion and is worth a look for fans of the genre.

Score: 80/100

Be fearless and unwavering as you work to unravel the curses laid upon the lands and defeat the ultimate evil at the heart of it all.

  • Adventure Mode - An end-game mode where you can explore procedurally generated areas or take on solo challenges.
  • Ten heroes - At the moment, players can choose from nine different heroes - each with their own unique class, skills, and playstyle to form a party of three and bring to adventure. Play as the Swordhand, Cleric, Ranger, Scoundrel, Spellbinder, Druid, Bard, Warlock, Golemancer, or the Monk.
  • Hundreds of skills - The heroes have a combined total of close to 500 passive and active skills that can be deployed during turn-based battles, allowing players to discover and formulate their favorite combos.

  • Loot galore - Gather items and relics throughout your journey to boost your heroes’ abilities. In the future, you will also encounter mysterious items that can bless your heroes but also cripple them with a curse at the same time.
  • Carryover rewards and progression system - Get rewarded the more you play through an Artifacts system that can benefit Realm Mode, Campaigns, or Adventure Mode.
  • Decisions to make - Shape the course of your adventure with critical decisions and dice rolls.

Gordian Quest - Review @ Gaming Trend

by Hiddenx, 10:38

Gaming Trend has reviewed the deck builder Gordian Quest:

Gordian Quest review — Deckbuilding, Dungeons, and Dice

Gordian Quest opens as your team approaches the mountain city of Silverkeep. Meant to be a quick stop, you find yourself helping the local head of the military, Captain Rodrick, uncovering that the city is besieged by the undead. Big damned heroes, you decide to work with Roderick to uncover the source, and ultimately the true threat behind it.

At its core, Gordian Quest is a deck builder. With inspirations like Slay the Spire, Tainted Grail: Conquest, and Guild of Dungeoneering, your ever-expanding (you’ll end up with 10 by the end) group of adventurers will tackle progressively stronger foes across four enormous acts. These four acts will easily require 25 to 30 hours or more to complete the first time. I say "first time" as the 10 classes are all wildly different, practically demanding replay. The Swordhand, Cleric, Ranger, Scoundrel, Spellbinder, Druid, Bard, Warlock, Golemancer, and the Monk all require completely different tactics to master, and it’s very likely you’ll settle into just a handful that you enjoy playing, leaving a whole cadre of characters waiting for another run. How you build those classes is the core loop, the strength, and the weakness of Gordian Quest, all rolled into one.

[...]

Summary: If you are a fan of deckbuilding card battlers, with a dash of RPG, then Gordian Quest is the best of the bunch. While there are a few tutorial elements and stability challenges to attend to, the endless replayability and randomization element makes every run unique.

PROS

  • Gorgeous visuals and soundtrack
  • Combat synergies are engaging and fun
  • Endless replayability
  • All ten characters are unique and challenging
  • Decision moments are a highlight

CONS

  • Game stability is a problem at launch
  • Some terms and mechanics need further explanation
  • Stats can be somewhat pointless at lower levels

Score: 85/100

Gordian Quest - Review @ Worthplaying

by Hiddenx, 15:01

Worthplaying checked out deck-builder Gordian Quest:

PC Review - 'Gordian Quest'

With a unique blend of tactical combat, strategic gameplay, and boisterous animated heroes, Gordian Quests takes players on a journey to defeat an ultimate evil plaguing the land.

It takes a lot to make a deck-builder stand out these days. Some attempt to alter the playing field, others add action elements, and others try unusual mechanics. One of my favorite methods is incorporating deck-building into a larger campaign-driven game, like Griftlands or Steamworld: Quest. Gordian Quest is the latest of these, and its long time spent in Early Access really shows. It isn't perfect, but it is one of the heftiest deck-builders on the market.

Gordian Quest is effectively a combination RPG and deck-builder game. You gather a party of heroes and go out adventuring, progressively fighting harder battles unless you retreat to base, all in the name of advancing the story and earning that precious loot. The general structure is straightforward but less linear than many other games in the genre. There's a plot but it's "go and defeat evil" stuff that offers enough to be interesting but not stand out. The gameplay is where it's at.

Combat is a deck-builder through and through. At the start of battle, each character rolls an initiative dice, and then friends and foes take turns beating the living crud out of each other based on their initiative order. Every character draws a random selection of cards from their deck and can expend energy to use them. This allows you to build up defense, damage enemies, or use buffs and debuffs. Since this is a team game, there's an emphasis on making sure abilities synergize with one another, since status effects are way more powerful if multiple people can exploit them.

[...]

Overall, Gordian Quest is fun deck-builder that's similar to a Griftlands-style campaign that's absolutely packed with content. It goes all-in on the RPG elements, which is both its greatest strength and biggest flaw. It's not as addictive as some of the strongest games in the genre, but it's still fun to play. I wish the developers had trimmed off some of the fat, but since they didn't, it means that you're getting a game with tons of content for a very reasonable price.
