People like Hogwarts Legacy an awful lot—it was the biggest game of 2023 - but one thing they didn't like (and by "they" I mean associate editor Ted Litchfield) was the inclusion of PlayStation-exclusive content. "How will we live without an exclusive quest and a Felix Felicis Potion Recipe?" he asked, in what I am certain was sincere and deeply-felt anguish. But Ted, and no doubt lots of other people, will be happy to know that content is coming to other platforms later this year.

I’ll be honest here, I’ve never had much of an interest in the Harry Potter series. I didn’t read the books, and in fact, I hadn’t watched most of the movies until recently (and that was to specifically prepare for the launch of the game, so I can write a more extensive review).

I also had a healthy dose of skepticism, especially given Avalanche Software’s previous record. This team has never done anything even close to this scale, so I was a bit cautious about this game. 

So, after finishing the campaign, along with a large number of side activities that took me around 65 hours in total, here are my thoughts.

Conclusion

If one were to remove the Harry Potter-themed coat of paint, Hogwarts Legacy would be a pretty standard open-world game that doesn’t venture to try anything particularly new. However, while the individual parts of Hogwarts Legacy don’t stand out as deep or particularly groundbreaking, this is one of those cases where I actually found the sum of its parts to be far more enjoyable than I would ever have expected it to be.  The game also supports mods, of which there are already plenty which is a great start. 

If I do have another criticism, it’s that it’s not very repayable. What I mean by that is a second playthrough would not be all that different if that is something you are expecting. There are little to no changes based on the choices you make overall, and even trying new builds wouldn’t offer a significantly different experience. That said, I’ll likely revisit it several months from now, unless there is some new content before that.

If you are looking for a relaxing and enjoyable open-world game to sink your teeth into, Hogwarts Legacy will likely scratch that itch.  Coming from a non-Harry Potter fan, I think it’s actually a competent and well-made game, has a decent amount of content, and is definitely worth playing if you haven’t already. Avalanche Software has surprised me, and I’m excited to see what they do next.

Hogwarts Legacy sees you as a witch or wizard enrol into the prestigious high school as a fifth year. The reason why the school would allow for such a late bloomer, is due to your innate ability to see and harness ancient and long forgotten magic. A professor named Fig takes you on an excursion to test your abilities and find evidence on the wrongdoings of an evil goblin named Ranrok and his accomplice, the dark wizard Rookwood. While you piece together evidence with Professor Fig, you are tasked with completing lessons and learning useful spells. As you spend time in the school, you make friends with a group of eclectic characters, whose lives may intertwine with Ranrok and Rookwood in surprising ways.

As a fan of the franchise, I was going to eat up whatever I was given, but I have to say, I’m really impressed with what Portkey Games has done. Hogwarts Legacy is a really strong product, there might be a few little wobbles here and there, mostly the result of the limits of an open world and the repetitiveness it brings, and slightly underwhelming main plot-line. Overall, the game is great and accessible enough for people new to the franchise or those who never cared for it before.

Hogwarts Legacy wants to give you the freedom to be your best wizard or witch self, even if that means embracing the darkness. After spending about an hour or so with Hogwarts Legacy at a recent preview session, the sense of choice – but also scale – is almost terrifyingly palpable. From dialogue choices, to how to approach specific moments, or even just which spells to learn, it seems navigating your way through the famed school of witchcraft and wizardry – and the alluring narrative that surrounds it – is going to be full of micro-decisions that may, or may not, impact other elements of magical life. 

It all starts with character creation. Before you even think about donning house robes, you'll need to decide what your budding fifth-year student is going to look and sound like in Hogwarts Legacy. You have choices based on what face shape and hairstyle you want to go for, rather than body types or gender. You can choose facial features like freckles or scars, and whether to wear glasses (yes, including round Harry Potter-esque specs). There are two voice options – one masculine and one feminine – and then you can choose what pitch your character will speak at. In fact, the only gendered decision you'll have to make is whether you want to live in the witch or wizard dorm when you eventually do walk the halls of Hogwarts. Hogwarts Legacy doesn't have the deepest character creation tool out there, but it's refreshingly inclusive.

Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games are happy to partner with PlayStation to bring you a special edition of State of Play entirely dedicated to Hogwarts Legacy. The show will run for about 20 minutes, featuring over 14 minutes of Hogwarts Legacy game-play captured on PS5, and concluding with some insight from a few members of the team at Avalanche Software who are bringing the Wizarding World to life.

It's VGC's turn to post rumours about the release date of Hogwarts Legacy, this time it's less optimistic. And since it's a quiet day, why not.

Hogwarts Legacy ‘may not launch until 2023’, it’s claimed

JOURNALIST’S SOURCES INDICATE A SLIP FOR THE WARNER TITLE

Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming Harry Potter RPG, may not launch until 2023, according to a journalist.

Speaking on his Sacred Symbols+ podcast (paywalled on Patreon, transcribed by VGC), Colin Moriarty when his co-host brought the game up in discussion said, “I’m hearing behind the scenes that game is not coming out this year, and that it’s in some sort of trouble.”

While Moriarty didn’t elaborate, the game hasn’t been publicly shown in some time, and currently has no release date beyond 2022.

Late last year, Rachel Wakely, Warner Bros. general manager spoke to Toy World magazine about the Wizarding World IP, in which she referred to “two major releases in 2022”. The first was the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbeldore, she said, which releases in the UK on April 8. The second was Hogwarts Legacy.

“From what we’ve seen, the launch will be well worth the wait and deliver a unique way for fans to interact with the franchise”.

This could suggest that the game isn’t set to release until after Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbeldore.

It was also reported that Hogwarts Legacy, will reportedly add the ability for players to create transgender heroes, following controversy stemming from comments made by series creator J.K. Rowling.

In the 18 months, Rowling has been criticised for making several comments perceived to be transphobic on her Twitter account, which caused many Harry Potter movie actors, including leads Emma Watson and Eddie Redmayne, to publicly voice their support for the transgender community.

According to a Bloomberg report citing anonymous sources at Warner Bros.’ Avalanche studio, some members of the game’s development have since fought to make the game as inclusive as possible, in response to the author’s comments.

Over the weekend, Henderson already had something to say about a rumored State of Play event from Sony next month, which, according to the leaker, has the potential to be quite a big event due to Sony’s upcoming lineup and past events

The story does take place in the same universe as the Harry Potter stories, however, we will not see the likes of Harry, Hermione, and Ron as you’ll be playing as a student attending Hogwarts in the 1800s. . Set hundreds of years before Potter is born, you get to experience student life and “embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world.”

Gameplay

As an open-world RPG, Hogwarts Legacy puts you at the heart of your own adventure in the wizarding world, where you get to be the “witch or wizard you choose to be.”

At the moment we don’t know if or how you’ll be able to customize your character’s appearance, but you’ll be able to grow your magical abilities to master spells and combat skills through casting, brewing potions, and taming fantastic beasts.

In true nature of an open-world game. players will be able to venture outside the Hogwarts castle and visit “new and familiar locations”, such as the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmead Village.

Hogwarts Legacy will be filled with various missions and scenarios that you’ll encounter along your journey which will challenge your morality, leaving it up to the player how they want to handle a situation.

You won’t have to face all of the dangers of your journey alone though, while it is a single-player experience with no multiplayer aspect that we know of so far, you will get to select companions who help you face your foes.
