Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society - Review

Real Otaku Gamer reviewed the dungeon crawler Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society:

Merge Your Soul for Treasure! – Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society Review

We’re honestly awash in first person dungeon crawler RPGs on the Switch these days.  If you’re a fan of the genre, this is an absolutely fantastic time to be a gamer.  With titles like Demon Gaze Extra (review here), Kowloon High School Chronicle (review here) and Saviors Of Sapphire Wings (review here) having made their way to the Switch successfully along with a bevy of other titles, it’s no surprise that there are more coming.  It’s a great genre and it’s only getting better!

The latest title to enter the genre is Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society from NIS America, purveyor of a significant portion of the first person dungeon RPG market!  But Galleria (it’s a long title) isn’t just another RPG.  There’s a bit more going on under the hood than you might expect here and you’re in for a treat!  It might not look like it at first but this is one complex RPG.

[...]

What you’re really getting here is a fun game that is well-made, interesting and unique, all wrapped in a first person dungeon shell that’s both charming and pretty.  At $50 it’s a bit cheaper than a AAA game, but you still get AAA level gameplay and more here.  Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society is definitely worth your time and Eureka and Fantie are definitely going to work their way into your heart if you give them a chance!  There’s plenty of weirdness here too and the story probably won’t go where you’d expect.  This is one dungeon RPG that’s certainly worth adding to your collection!

Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society - Review

RPG Site reviewed the dungeon crawler Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society:

Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society Review

There are a lot of big & interesting RPGs landing in 2023 - including a few that have already been released - but the one I was probably most eager to play was Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society. This is the second entry in Nippon Ichi Software's dungeon-crawling series, following Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk's English release in 2018.

Labyrinth of Refrain was something of a surprise darling, at least to me and some other RPG Site staff members. From a developer that hasn't typically made dungeon crawlers, Refrain offered an interesting take on the genre while introducing plenty of its own flavor, both in its gameplay mechanics and narrative storytelling. We were ultimately so fond of the game that it even landed in our Top Five RPGs of 2018, along with the likes of Monster Hunter World and Dragon Quest XI.

[...]

Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society is an admirable follow-up to Labyrinth of Refrain, with polished gameplay systems, an intriguing storyline, and a lengthy runtime. The narrative and characters did not land for me quite as strongly as Refrain's, but I'm still hoping NIS continues with their newfound dungeon-crawling franchise.

Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society Review – Profoundly Covert

Labyrinth of Galleria The Moon Society is an addictive dungeon-crawling RPG that fans of the genre will undoubtedly sink dozens upon dozens of hours into. Its involved yet approachable gameplay systems, meaningful sense of consequence, and cathartic breakthroughs of progress make it a joy to spend time learning. Even amidst some area design choices I perceived as stumbles, unnecessarily drawn-out tutorials, and bland environments, this was a journey I’m glad I stuck out to its end.

Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society - Review

Waytoomanygames checked out the upcoming J-RPG Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society:

REVIEW – LABYRINTH OF GALLERIA: THE MOON SOCIETY

It’s exceedingly hard to project a proper plotline into a first person dungeon crawler. For one, the core mechanics and presentation ask you to hold the plot in mind while actively separating from the stage: it’s like if a musical just had people wordlessly playing mahjong between songs. Over the last few years, the Nintendo Switch has been treated to a variety of takes on the first person dungeon crawler, with varying levels of success. But the last few have been, to put it delicately, overly horny, and that can really take away from trying to enjoy a game for game’s sake. It’s hard to think “I’m conquering this dungeon for a noble cause!” when everything is jiggling at you provocatively.

[...]

So where does that leave the average player? After all, we don’t all have upwards of sixty hours to dedicate to insane dungeon grinding and slow paced dialogue scenes, not to mention actually needing to figure out where to go in order to move the story forward. It was mildly frustrating to be tasked with finding the next Curio, running around fruitlessly for forty minutes, and then realizing it was hidden in the wall right next to the entrance. Nothing about this game is an easy path forward, and, for some, that’s beautiful, but I can understand a bit of a disheartening take to realize that this game will demand actual weeks to fully explore (unless you forsake work and sleep that is).

But I think it’s worth the trip. Labyrinth of Galleria doesn’t just have excellent game mechanics and some cute artwork, though it certainly has those in spades. More importantly, it has a fantastically paced story that slowly pulls you in, giving you more and more to think about and keep in mind, before using your own investment against you. It’s superb tale spinning, and I haven’t seen this level of involvement in a dungeon crawler in a long time. Don’t let the mystery of this cursed dungeon slip away: there’s so much to discover in the Galleria.

Score: 9/10
