Mandragora - Review

by Hiddenx, 16:20

RPG Site reviewed Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree:

Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree Review

Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree combines two sub-genres that are quite well-worn today: search action 'Metroidvania' and 'Soulslike'. Even if you don't know anything else about Mandragora, assuming you are familiar with those genres, you probably already have a halfway-decent idea of what to expect with those two comparisons alone.

Despite the overly simple genre slotting, I had been interested in checking out Mandragora for a while. A dark fairytale fantasy from a small Hungarian studio seemed like it could be a cool curiosity. I was hoping for a mixture of enjoyable action RPG combat with satisfying exploration and a touch of magic weirdness. Unfortunately, I come away mostly apathetic with a game that is decent, but unremarkable.

[...]

I struggle to pinpoint any particular facet of Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree that is exceptional. The combat is serviceable, the narrative is adequate, and the exploration is fine. There's some comfort in navigating the map & finding new secrets in a way that search action games tend to be comfortable, and there's some satisfaction in the gameplay in which soulslike games tend to be satisfying, but I'm mostly left with indifference.

Score: 6/10

Mandragora - User Data Collection removed

by Hiddenx, 17:14

Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree removed the collection of user data:

Important Update on Data Collection and Privacy removal

Dear Inquisitors,

We want to stress that you, Players, are our first priority. Your trust and the game are at the center of our attention.

Similar to the removal of additional DRM solutions from the game prior to release, which we decided to do after receiving the community feedback and understanding the concerns regarding an unrestricted gaming experience. Allow us now to address your concerns regarding telemetry and data collection in the game.

What Happened

Data collection and telemetry in-game are industry practices that publishers and developers adopt to improve their games (e.g. improve balance, game progression, content, crashes, etc.) - and this was the case too for Mandragora.

However, we understand that sharing our general-purpose set of legal agreements, including the Privacy Policy, that covers and regulates many different services - including, for example, websites and marketplaces, and many types of games, including multiplayer ones - created only misunderstanding and concerns, instead of fulfilling their key role of giving you maximum transparency.

What We’re Doing About It

We want you to enjoy the game with peace of mind. For this reason, we have decided to remove all telemetry and data collection from Mandragora, effective immediately. This will give you a fully offline experience without any information transferred or collected, so you can enjoy the game as you want.

We want to inform you upfront that this change required us to update the EULA removing any unneeded reference to data that is not collected anymore and the references to the now removed Privacy Policy. This requires a patch and you might be asked to accept the new and simplified EULA.

Mandragora - Release Date: April 17, 2025

by Hiddenx, 18:48

The Metroidvania Mandragora will be released on April 17, 2025:

Mandragora is Coming on April 17: Preorder Today!

Hi everyone,

We have some really big news to share with you today about our game:

Mandragora is coming on April 17, 2025 - and you can preorder it today!

While we previously aimed for a 2024 release, we found we need more time to ensure Mandragora exceeds expectations. We really wanted to bring Mandragora to you by the end of the year, but quality is important to us, and the last thing we ever want to do is deliver you a subpar experience.

Many of you played the public Steam Demo, and you sent us plenty of invaluable feedback about many areas we still want to improve upon before the full release. This extra time will allow us to integrate those insights into a better, smoother gaming experience.

We’re incredibly grateful for your support and patience, and we’re confident this updated timeline will help make the final release well worth the wait!

Mandragora is now available for preorder right here on Steam!

If you or your friends are looking to get your hands on some Mandragora action, then this is the perfect opportunity to get your hands on the game as well as some cool extras.

Everyone who preorders the game will receive exclusive digital rewards as well as access to two preview builds of the game ahead of release.

With your preorder, you will gain immediate access to the Preview 1 build, and will keep that access until Preview 2 becomes available in its place. This first Preview offers about 4 times more content compared to the demo - including more enemies, levels, loot, and another class to try out!

And while Preview 1 is already a solid experience, we’re already hard at work addressing earlier feedback and implementing improvements, many of which will be featured in Preview 2. Preview 2 is planned for release in early 2025, and will provide a much deeper look into the game, offering a more substantial slice of what’s to come - so with your preorder, you'll have that to look forward to as well!

Preorder rewards:

  • Preorder Pet Follower
  • Preorder Armor Transmog Set
  • Preorder Exclusive In-Game Quest*
  • Access to Preview Builds

There is also a Digital Deluxe edition available, which you can preorder to receive all the above rewards available as well as even more cool digital rewards!

Digital Deluxe Preorder rewards:

  • All Preorder rewards
  • Deluxe Pet Follower
  • Deluxe Armor Transmog Set
  • Original Soundtrack
  • Digital Artbook

*Limited time exclusivity. Available for everyone at a later date.

At the moment, we can only confirm this preorder for Steam and Epic Games Store. For those of you excited for Mandragora to arrive on consoles, we know you might feel a little disappointed by the lack of preorder availability. Please rest assured we’ll share more news for you too as soon as we’re able!

If you have any further questions, please let us know here in the comments or over on our Discord! We can’t guarantee we’ll be able to provide you with a detailed answer at this time, but we’ll do our best to be as helpful as we can in answering any questions you may have.

Thanks Couchpotato!

Hi everyone!

We hope you’re excited for another installment of our Dev Diary series, where we’re showcasing different key aspects of Mandragora.

Today’s topic: Damage Types and Effects!

We already mentioned quite a few Damage Types as well as some Status Effects in our previous Dev Diaries. You may have also experienced some of them firsthand when playing the Mandragora Demo!

So in today’s installment, we’ll be discussing all those damage types and status effects in further detail!

In Mandragora, your Weapons, Active Skills, and Talents can cause one or more types of damage.

Each damage type has an associated Status Effect which can be applied based on the corresponding Status Effect Chance when dealing direct damage of that type. Some effects may also directly apply Status Effects.

Mandragora - Dev Diary #2

by Hiddenx, 17:15

Couchpotato spotted dev diary #2 for the Metroidvania Mandragora:

Dev Diary #2 - Talent Tree Progression

Welcome to the world of Mandragora! This series of ‘Dev Diary’ posts will take you behind the scenes and give you a more in-depth look at all the cool features you can expect from our game as we get closer to release.

•────────────────────────────•

Hi everyone!

It’s Dev Diary time again, where we’re highlighting various key aspects of our upcoming game to help you gain extra insight into what features to expect in Mandragora.

And we really hope you’ll enjoy getting your hands on features like this when our public demo launches on September 30!

Today’s topic: Talent Trees!

In our first Dev Diary, we talked about Gear Progression, which was all about the many epic items you’ll be able to find, equip, craft, and enchant in Mandragora.

And today, we’ll learn about another hugely important source of character power: Talent Trees.

Wait… Talent Trees, plural?

Yes! The full game will include 6 classes in total, and each have their own Talent Tree that helps shape their unique playstyle.

You are not limited to your own Talent Tree: after level 15, you are free to unlock other class trees as well, which allows you to create mixed classes. However, at first, it’s best to stick to your starting class Talent Tree until you learn all the basics. And if you make a mistake, no worries! The Talent Tree can be fully reset.

How do Talent Trees work in Mandragora?

Let’s take a look at the inner workings of the Talent Tree using the Vanguard class as an example. This class will be available in our public demo launching September 30 - so you’ll also be able to discover all its power firsthand then!

Vanguards are elite fighters within the ranks of the Inquisitors who employ raw physical prowess, massive shields, and brutal two-handed weapons.

Whenever you Level Up in Mandragora, or use an Offering Shrine, you gain Talent Points which you can spend in the Talent Tree.
