I’ve been tracking MythForce since the first time I clapped eyes on it. You see, I’m an old git, an elder millennial if you prefer, and the MythForce aesthetic is aimed squarely at me – I am this game’s core demographic (and that doesn’t happen so much anymore). Yet the game was first released to very mixed feedback, and at the time I decided to skip it so I could focus on other games.

More recently I noticed that this roguish first-person shooter/brawler had been given a huge mechanical overhaul, and I decided that now was the time to take another look. And you know what? I’m glad that I did, because I think that MythForce is in pretty good shape now thanks to the aptly named Harder, Better, Faster, Story Update.

Nikki Rae Hallow (Nikki Hulowski) is an award-winning Canadian actress, comedian, voice actor, writer, improviser, instructor, and more. She performs on both film and the stage, and she's a member and co-founder of Marv n' Berry, a Canadian sketch comedy troupe that has seen international success. Nikki is a core cast member of the Lodestar Theatre company, an improviser with Rapid Fire Theatre, and the internationally acclaimed improvised soap opera Die-Nasty, and can be seen performing live, onscreen, or in your ears across Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, and mainland Europe. Top it all off with cartoons all over Netflix, Prime, and more.

What's the unique challenge of voice acting as opposed to stage or screen acting?

One of the most difficult aspects of voice acting is that you have to convey all of your emotions, opinions, and actions through the voice alone. On stage or screen, we so often rely on our facial expressions or body language to do the work for us, but with voice acting those physical cues go out the window. There are still ways to use those physical subtleties to your advantage though; similar to a phone conversation, you can tell if a person is happy, smiling, or sad by the depth of their voice.

Mythforce is a cartoony, surprisingly tough co-op roguelite from RPG veterans

Mythforce shares a lot of DNA with popular dungeon crawler Gunfire Reborn, but with a classical fantasy aesthetic.

Mythforce, a new roguelite loosely styled after '80s fantasy cartoons, almost feels like the setup for a joke. Stop me if you've heard this one: a knight, a rogue, a mage, and a ranger walk into a dungeon. Then they all die because they ran out of stamina.

There are two types of videogame at odds within Mythforce: one a breezy, actiony dungeon crawler where you slay dozens of enemies while chatting with your co-op crew, the other a deliberate, slow-paced combat game that demands precise sword swings and dodges to stay alive for more than a few minutes. I'm up for either approach, but the first feels more in line with Mythforce's cartoony tone and its multiplayer roguelite structure. It's perhaps overly harsh for a stray step in front of a fire-spewing statue to burn away half my health when healing potions are apparently this fantasy world's rarest commodity.
