Nethergate - Now on Steam

by Dhruin, 13:12

Spiderweb's Nethergate: Resurrection - always one of my favourites - has been released on Steam. With 20% off, it's a measly $3.99 at the moment:

Nethergate: Resurrection is now available on Steam and 20% off until October 12th at 10AM Pacific Time!

Britannia is a land ravaged by war. The natives of this land, the savage Celts, have long been subjugated by the Roman invaders. At last, they have risen up in bloody rebellion. Battles rage across the land. Cities are sacked, the inhabitants massacred. And, lost in the chaos, in the small, forgotten valley of Shadowvale, a plan is being formed.

Soon, a band of barbarians will rediscover the lost secrets of magic. They will find a way to rid their lands of their oppressors forever. And you, as the Celtic warriors, will attempt to free your people.

Or you, as the Romans, will attempt to crush them. For the good of the Empire.

Nethergate - Quick Look @ Scorpia's Lair

by Dhruin, 21:06

Scorpia takes a really quick look Spiderweb's Nethergate remake but decides to pass:

What makes Nethergate different is the semi-historical setting of Britain during the Roman occupation, along with the ability to play as either Romans or Celts. Of course, there’s still plenty of fantasy, with faerie folk and fomorians running around, plus magic.

I’ve been through the demo portion as each side a few times now, but really can’t get into the game to where I’d buy it. Maybe it’s because Romans/Celts aren’t all that different.

Nethergate - Review @ GameShark

by Dhruin, 21:37

It's rare to see a review of a Spiderweb game on a larger site but GameShark has a critique of Nethergate: Resurrection by well-known writer Troy S. Goodfellow (1up, among others). The score is a sold 'B' with the aging engine and long text exposition criticised. Inexplicably, the lack of automap is also listed as an issue -- which left me confused, because you can see the Automap button clearly in the screenshots provided, down in the bottom left. Am I missing something? Here's a clip, anyway:

It’s a stretch to say that if you’ve played one Spiderweb game you’ve played them all, but there is a lingering sense that each new game is a module on an existing engine more than a new experience. Vogel has set himself up as a story teller, and this story is pretty good. It’s got the usual ancient evils and ethnic misunderstandings, but it makes effective use of literary devices beyond the usual fantasy clichés. There’s dramatic irony (Romans love to talk about how awesome Nero is); legendary tropes (three magic hags) and a little humor (a battle of the sexes within a spider colony.) And the Celtic side of the story is parallel to the Roman. You have two separate adventures here with one side fighting for freedom and the other keeping the empire together.

Nethergate - Review @ Applelinks

by Dhruin, 00:39

A site called Applelinks has a new review of Spiderweb's Nethergate: Resurrection, with a score of 4/5.  Here's a bit on reading:

Later in the game, you'll come across an unusual group of people called Selkies, who turn from humans to seals, and who are misunderstood and threatened by those around them. They describe their sadness and desire to be alone to live their life, and their leader asks you to help them so they can have some peace. Does the music change to reflect their sad plight? Is there a close-up of a Selkie's tear-stained face? No. You'll have to read and use your imagination.

RPGWatch Feature: Nethergate Resurrection Review

by Dhruin, 14:23

We delve into Spiderweb's Nethergate remake and discover a fascinating world worth exploring. Here's a snip from the review:

The second major drawcard for Nethergate is the two separate campaigns – and this has a big impact on the game in a number of ways. Unlike many CRPGs that might offer “paths” through the main quest that really just hinge on a handful of different dialogue choices, Nethergate is split into two completely different (but intertwined) campaigns that together tell the story from two different perspectives. The two sides have different starting points, different quests, a different (though related) story and an emphasis on different character skills.

Nethergate - Windows Version Released

by Dhruin, 10:44

Spiderweb has released Nethergate: Resurrection for Windows and, as usual, there is a large demo to try out.  Here's the blurb from the official site as a refresher:

At last, Spiderweb Software's classic adventure of treachery and battle in ancient times has returned! Travel back to ancient Britannia for a tale of cunning foes, vicious battles, and a race to rediscover the lost secrets of magic.

Nethergate: Resurrection is a huge, exciting, fantasy role-playing game, that features:

  • Two different sides, the powerful Romans and the savage and cunning Celts. Each side has a completely different full-length adventure.
  • Enormous game world, with dozens of dungeons and many characters and quests.
  • Fascinating storyline. Fight for freedom, or further the glory of the Empire.
  • Lost secrets of magic! Dozens of spells and hundreds of hidden magical artifacts.

I had great fun with the beta, so do check it out if you like Spiderweb or indie CRPGs.

Nethergate - Interview @ RPG Vault

by Dhruin, 23:54

RPG Vault's Jonric has interviewed Jeff Vogel in a three-page article about Nethergate: Resurrection. Here's an early question:

Jonric: What are the basics you'd like our readers to know about Nethergate: Resurrection? What's it about, and what do you mean when you say it's a ground-up re-write? When is it likely to ship?

Jeff Vogel:
Nethergate: Resurrection is our newest big indie RPG. It's available for Mac as of this week, and should be out for Windows this summer.

Nethergate: Resurrection takes place in a setting that is really unique for fantasy RPGs, ancient Britain. The Romans have taken over Britannia, crushing the Celts, the savage tribes that controlled the island. The game details how some Celts have discovered the last traces of magic left in the world. They are scheming to remove the Romans from their home. You can play the Celts and fight for freedom, or you can play Romans and crush the rebellion.

This game is a ground-up re-write of the original Nethergate, which came out last century. We've gone over every encounter and every dungeon, spicing them up, adding material, reworking the interface, and adding two big dungeons and a pile of new quests.
