The title and contents of “Labyrinth of the Ghost King,” the first large-scale downloadable content for Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom due out this winter, have finally been revealed.

The main offering of the first large-scale downloadable content is the addition of the deep random dungeon called “Labyrinth.” This is a super difficult dungeon that is even harder than the high difficulty “Faraway Forest” dungeon.

Additionally, the downloadable content is highlighted by a “Gokui” system that creates an entirely new battle style than seen thus far, new weapons, new quests that touch upon the main characters’ pasts, and more.

Ni No Kuni 2 - Review @ TechQuila

by Myrthos, 12:42

TechQuila reviewed Ni No Kuni 2, rating it with a total score of 4.2/5.

Japanese RPGs are quite different from their Western counterparts. They tend to be less gory, with a whimsical setting and push the limits of imagination. However, on the down side, they often follow the same old cliches and stick to the tried and tested formula of saving the world while playing as a law abiding, virtuous protagonist, painfully predictable to a fault. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is another JRPG that to sticks to that Eastern video game trope, highlighting it’s appeal and at the same time bringing out the flaws.

The game takes place in a world, one where humans aren’t the only sentient beings. You’ve got cat-folk, dog-folk, rat-folk and even fish-folk. For someone not used to the fairy tale setting of JRPGs or childish games in general, it may be hard to take Ni no Kuni II seriously, but if you can get past that it’s fairly entertaining.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom follows Evan Tildrum, a young King who is deposed in a coup and looses his closest friend in the aftermath. Now, what is the first thing a ousted ruler would work towards? Getting their throne back and punishing the usurper, right? Evan on the other hand decides that all is well and good and runs off to start a new kingdom of his own where everyone can live in peace and happiness. To further cement his naivety, he names his kingdom Evermore.

Ni No Kuni 2 - New Difficulty Modes

by Silver, 22:06

@DSOGaming A new patch for Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom has added Hard and Expert difficulty modes.

Going into slightly more details about the new difficulty modes, players can now choose how hard they want their challenge to be when they select “New Game” from the title screen, or by entering the in-game options menu at any time. The higher the setting, the harder the battles will be, but this will be offset by rarer treasures from monsters, from the chests in the Faraway Forest, and certain other places.

Ni No Kuni 2 - Review @ Express

by Hiddenx, 22:15

The Express has reviewed the J-RPG Ni No Kuni 2:

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom review: RPG series soars to new heights on PS4

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is a charming RPG that successfully brings together lots of different ideas.

Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom is out now on PS4 and PC.

Developed by legendary studio Level-5, the follow-up to the PS3's Wrath of the White Witch is positively bursting with fresh ideas.

The game revolves around a young ruler named Evan, who sets out to found a new kingdom after falling foul of a coup.

But there's more to Ni No Kuni 2 than wondering from village to village battling monsters and exploring dungeons.

You'll have to expand and manage your kingdom, recruit citizens, fight in large-scale skirmishes and much more.

Does Ni No Kuni 2 successfully integrate all of these different gameplay ideas? Check out our review gallery to find out more...

by Hiddenx, 10:21

Gamerevolution has reviewed the J-RPG Ni No Kuni 2:

How Ni no Kuni 2 Revitalized My Love for the JRPG

[...]

Ni no Kuni 2 is an excellent example of a modernization of JRPG traditions. It doesn't challenge the genre as Final Fantasy 15 does. Instead, it embraces its past, but updates and perfects it in a way that makes it an absolute joy to play. Not only is the game good in and of itself, but it also does an excellent job bringing to mind awesome adventures you've had with past hits in the genre. I can honestly say this game has me in full JRPG fever mode, and I can't wait to go back and play some of the games I loved, and some I've missed, soon.

Ni No Kuni 2 - Review @ MMORPG

by Hiddenx, 20:09

MMORPG has reviewed Ni No Kuni 2:

The RPG Files: Ni no Kuni II: The Revenant Kingdom Review

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is the newest JRPG from developer Level-5 who is also known for their work on Professor Layton, Dark Cloud, Yo-Kai Watch serieses. A follow up to 2011’s smash hit Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch this entry isn’t a direct sequel. Similar to the Final Fantasy series this is a sequel in name and theme only.

[...]

Loot in Ni No Kuni II is everywhere. In this way the game feels similar to an ARPG than a traditional JRPG. You can hold on to these items and build sets of gear that have certain elemental affinities that can help you with tainted monsters and other difficult encounters.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
is a solid entry into the Ni no Kuni franchise and another good RPG from the developers at Level-5. If you like games in the Star Ocean or Tales franchise chances are you’ll like this game as well. If you are a fan of older games like Suikoden or Dark Cloud where you focus on building a kingdom or city you’ll find plenty to like here too.

Score: 8.5

Pros

  • Great visuals
  • Lots of interesting characters
  • City Building

Cons

  • Chibi Graphics Overworld
  • Monotonous combat

Ni No Kuni 2 - Review @ RPS

by Hiddenx, 09:34

Rock Paper Shotgun reviewed the J-RPG Ni No Kuni 2:

Wot I Think: Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Most RPGs cast you as an intrepid interloper, the Only One Who Can Help a series of desperate quest-givers beset by increasingly elaborate problems. Personally, I’ve gotten a little sick of piloting a party of unlikely heroes as they roam from ruined land to ruined land in search of these conundrums, slaying worthy foes and draining tombs of ancient loot. When the scourge of the realm falls at my feet and the last coins of its horde lie safely in my pocket, I find myself wondering: should I really leave matters in the hands of the feckless village chief who can’t even summon up the will to leave his house and take care of the slime-infested meadow over the hill? Well, probably not, but I don’t get a choice. The mysteries of government and management aren’t my field, and besides, there’s a Big Bad lurking over the mountains who’s plotting to blast everything to smithereens unless we get a move on.

[...]

It’s tempting to indulge the cliché and say that Ni no Kuni 2 is more than the sum of its parts, but that’s not entirely accurate either. Rather, Revenant Kingdom is essentially just the sum of its parts and nothing more. They’re nice enough parts, and they mesh together to create one of the better JRPGs I’ve played over the past few years, but as I watched the credits roll by, I could already feel the experience seeping from my memory like a sieve. Almost anybody can mine out 40 or 50 hours-worth of honest enjoyment from the quest to build Evermore, and I certainly encourage genre fans to take the plunge. Just don’t be surprised if it fails to make much of a lasting impression, like a sandcastle going out with the tide.

Thanks henriquejr!

Ni No Kuni 2 - Review @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 22:13

PC Gamer has reviewed the upcoming Action RPG Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom:

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom Review

What is it? An open-world action JRPG built around a great kingdom building sim.
Release date: March 23, 2018

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom has done a fabulous job of hiding its best feature. It's an open-world action JRPG, but at its heart is a building sim where you've got a top-down view of a dollhouse-like kingdom. You raise buildings, generate resources, assign personnel and research tactics and sciences. Managing your kingdom is not just a thing to do between quests. It's the reason you quest. It's what connects Ni No Kuni 2's many ambitious systems and keeps them running, and more than anything, it's what keeps me coming back.
[...]
When it wasn't surprising me with yet more stuff to do, Ni No Kuni 2 impressed me by streamlining RPG basics with modern improvements. Instead of having to tediously pick up items, you automatically hoover up loot. Instead of the JRPG thing where you load into a pocket dimension after bumping into an enemy, if you see an enemy in a dungeon, you approach and fight normally, which improves the flow of dungeon-crawling, makes it easier to gauge enemy strength, and makes exploration tense. These are things I wish every game did.

Ni No Kuni 2 is gorgeous, charming and constantly evolving. Its combat is layered and exciting, and polished by a medley of systems that let you finely tailor your play style. Its globetrotting coming-of-age story is a bit saccharine, but it's told well, and packs an ending that still occupies my thoughts. But its crowning achievement is tying all that and more into an involved and deeply satisfying kingdom building sim, one that enhances every other part of the game.

Score: 90/100

Thanks henriquejr!

Ni No Kuni 2 - Hands On Review

by Hiddenx, 20:26

Digital Trends has checked out the J-RPG Ni no Kuni: Revenant Kingdom:

‘Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom’ hands-on review

'Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom' aims to bring more Studio Ghibli magic to PS4 and PC

Offering a whole new world filled with familiar flourishes, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is getting ready to solidify the next JRPG multiverse.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch remains one of the most distinct RPGs of the last console generation. Combining a dream team of RPG developer Level-5 (Professor Layton, Dragon Quest VIII) and world renowned anime house Studio Ghibli (Spirited AwayMy Neighbor Totoro), the promise of a playable Hayao Miyazaki film set many gamers’ imaginations on fire. The game received a warm, if somewhat mixed reception, earning praise for its beautiful aesthetic, but criticized for its slow and grindy pace, in the vein as ’90s JRPGs. More than five years later, however, the announcement of its sequel has been stoking the flames of excitement for fans of both JRPGs and anime. We recently had a chance to play a brief demo on the E3 show floor.

[...]

The Ghibli touch

The creative dream team from the first game has returned for the second, bringing all of the charm we would come to expect from a Ghibli-infused project. Yoshiyuki Momose, a former Ghibli animator and character designer who worked on films such as Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies, returns as the animation lead, character designer, and storyboard artist. Fans of Ghibli films will feel right at home in Ni No Kuni 2, as its characters would fit right in. The studio’s signature warmth and charm pervades every little detail of the world and its inhabitants.

Also crucial to the emotional impact of Ghibli films are their musical scores. Longtime Miyazaki collaborator (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds…basically every one of his films you can think of) and composer from the first game Joe Hisaishi returns to score the sequel. Hisaishi masterfully weaves western and eastern motifs together into music that is as memorable as it is heartwarming, and we fully expect his compositions for Ni No Kuni 2 to hit that same bittersweet nostalgia we know and love from his work.

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom comes to PS4 and PC on November 10, 2017.

Ni No Kuni 2 - Releasing November 10th

by Silver, 03:58

@PCGamer Ni No Kuni 2 is releasing November 10th on PC.

loading...

The sequel looks just as beautiful, but shakes up the combat of Ni No Kuni, moving it from 1v1, almost Pokemon-like fights to larger scale encounters that reminded James of Pikmin. We don't know a whole lot more about the game beyond the combat trailer seen above, but it's encouraging to see publisher Bandai Namco release a hard date without having to specify a separate one for PC.
