by Couchpotato, 01:00

Paper Sorcerer is now available on GOG for $3.99. At this price it's well worth a buy to play something original, and help the games developer.

Paper Sorcerer - Review Roundup

by Couchpotato, 03:47

I found two more reviews for Paper Sorcerer if anyone is interested.

Softpedia - 7.5/10

Paper Sorcerer is one of the few indie-made titles that understand how to use retro graphics and a lot of stylization in order to create a sense of wonder and beauty, while never allowing the player to wonder about their actual quality.

Capsule Computers - 9.5/10

Paper Sorcerer is certainly an amazing game for the price. Turn-based strategy lovers will adore this game, and even if you’re not into this genre, players will find themselves hooked to the mode of gameplay. Having an additional level unlocked after you’ve completed one is addictive, and I’ve found myself staying up late into the night trying to uncover more and more of the mysteries of the tome that the sorcerer is imprisoned in. The game is not easy, so don’t expect to finish the game quickly, but why would you want to do that? Taking the time to understand all the intricacies of the game is barely scratching the surface of the potential this game has to offer.

Paper Sorcerer - Review Roundup

by Couchpotato, 03:12

Here are a couple of new reviews for Paper Sorcerer.

Digitally Downloaded - 4.5/5

The only time that Paper Sorcerer betrays its indie roots is with the soundtrack, which nearly made my ears bleed. Given how easy it was to turn off, however, I'm not going to complain about it, because in the broader picture, this game is genuinely good fun, and a true retro rush for people that grew up with classic RPGs.

Expansive DLC - 7.5/10

Paper Sorcerer is a fantastic trip down memory lane. It’s a game full of content and fresh challenges and will go down as one of a few great Kickstarter success stories. An old-school RPG with new-age features, Paper Sorceror recognizes where it came from and unashamedly flaunts it every chance it gets. And at a bargain price, it’s a nostalgic ride worth a slight financial risk

Paper Sorcerer - Review @ Twinfinite

by Couchpotato, 01:09

Twinfinite posted a new review of Paper Sorcerer, and award the game with a 4/5.

Paper Sorcerer doesn’t promise to be the next fantasy epic, and it isn’t. What it manages to be is a great little dungeon crawler with tons of options to customize the player’s experience and a challenging, fun time. Yes, it’s been awhile since I enjoyed such a game. But Paper Sorcerer’s minion summoning system and engaging combat kept be coming back for more. Throwing loot and XP to a player isn’t a bad strategy either but this game manages not to overdo it, striking a balance between effort and reward.

Kickstarter - Editorial @ Rock, Paper, Shotgun

by Couchpotato, 03:38

Rock Paper Shotgun seems to be the next site to give their opinion on Kickstarter.

Here’s an important thing about games: sometimes they’re terrible. Mostly they’re average. Quite often they’re good. That’s how “average” works. What people don’t appear to be ready for is the possibility that these rules will apply to games that have been Kickstarted. Some of the games, from the indie projects raising $10,000, to the big-names-going-indie gathering millions, aren’t going to be very good. And others are going to be alright. And here’s the thing: that’s okay.

Clearly there’s some quality bias when it comes to the bigger name KS projects. There’s a far greater chance of greatness, when the money’s been raised on the back of its being pledged to developers with proven track records. There’s a reason people are willing to hand over such copious amounts of cash to Chris Roberts to make Star Citizen – dude made Wing Commander. There’s not only a far higher expectation on the game to eventually be good, but there’s also a greater chance it will be. Thing is, it could still be just about good enough. It’s still possible. And that’s just fine.

Paper Sorcerer - News Roundup

by Couchpotato, 03:11

Developer Ultra Runaway Games was kind eough to send more infomation over about their released RPG Paper Sorcerer. So lets get started as it will be long.

First up the game is now updated to version 1.9.

The game recently updated to v1.9

One of the main changes for this build is that the Shop and Equip menus preview the result of equipping an item better. Also, now the Item menu stays on the same item after you use it, which helps when using potions and the like. I've also added a new effect for the Bleeding status effect and made various balance tweaks.

I'd also like to point out that saves from the downloadable demo are transferable to the full game.

If you'd like more info about what has changed since the last version, you can find that on the Ultra Runaway Games forum.

Next we get some more press coverage.

Kotaku takes a quick look at the game.

Behold, the recently-released Paper Sorcerer, a Kickstarted indie RPG with a look all its own.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has a article with a look at the demo:

This looks like a very interesting combination of old-school turn-based RPG, with a very interesting modern first-person aesthetic, fantastic use of blank space and unreal design.

They also did a new Impressions video.

There’s lots going on here for something so cheap, while still being a very stripped back RPG for modern standards. The concept is novel, the approach is intriguing, and the challenge enough to keep things interesting. I’d say this is

Lastly the developer has released a few Avatars, and gives a link to the games demo.

Avatars

I thought you guys might like Paper Sorcerer avatars!

Each album contains all the square images at the size listed.

Right click the image, "Save As" somewhere on your computer, and set your Avatar on Penny Arcade and elsewhere to spread the Paper Sorcerer love! On Penny Arcade, you can change it by clicking on your icon in the upper right -> Mouseover your avatar on the left -> Change picture -> Choose picture.

You can also download the whole avatar set as a zip file if you like, from the Ultra Runaway website.

If you haven't already tried the demo, you can download it or play it in your browser! Try the demo now

Paper Sorcerer - Video Preview @ IndieRPGs

by Couchpotato, 02:21

IndieRPGs.com takes a look at Paper Sorcerer in this new new thirty-five minute video.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed my time with Paper Sorcerer, but I could see myself getting tired of it if it continues in the same linear fashion. As one ought to expect from a first impressions piece, I simply haven’t played enough of the game to render a final judgment about it.

Paper Sorcerer - Post-Funding Update #33

by Couchpotato, 03:44

UltraRunawayGames has a new post-funding update for Paper Sorcerer with news the demo is back again, and show off the female skin for your main character.

I also have a new gameplay video from a few weeks ago.

Hi guys, Been a little over a week since the last update.

Meanwhile been doing a lot of polishing on the game, played through the whole game twice to make sure that all the shadows were working, events were firing correctly, etc. The tasklist on the whiteboard isn't constantly full anymore, it's nice to visibly see the game is getting close to finished.

So, the big news this time, is the second sorcerer option is finished! If you recall, one of the stretch goals was: $9500 A new skin for the main character.

For that, based on some of the feedback from the demo, I decided the second option would be a female version. Here it is:

Spread the word, there's am demo anyone can try, and pre-orders are open. Release hopefully by the end of the month! The giveaway's running until the end of the month, so spread the link around to all your friends that didn't back the kickstarter: http://bit.ly/16cYX0x

Oh, and doing polishing stuff distracted me a bit from the Android test build, so don't worry about not having seen it in your inbox yet. I'll send it along shortly.

Thanks for all the support, I really appreciate it. See you next update!

Kickstarter - Paper Sorcerer

by Dhruin, 00:14

Myrkel on our forums posted about the Kickstarter campaign for Paper Sorcerer, and it's certainly a game some readers would enjoy. It's a first-person dungeon crawler inspired by the likes of Wizardry and offering a unique hand-drawn look. The campaign has already exceeded the measly $5k requested but I'm sure they could use more:
