Pathfinder: The Dragon's Demand - Kickstarter Update 15

by Hiddenx, 17:30

Couchpotato spotted Kickstarter update 15 for Pathfinder: The Dragon's Demand:

Update 15: Art and Programming Updates

Greetings Demanders!

The team has been hard at work this past month (as always). Our character artists have kept pumping out monsters, while Gabriel (lead artist) and Philip (art director) have continued to hammer out our character system for swapping heads, hairs, armours, body poses, and facial expressions between ancestries. We also expanded it to include customizable things like tattoos, scars, makeup, and face paint.

Trying to accomplish all those features really took us down the rabbit hole during February. We had to redesign parts of our framework a couple of times based on testing, and needed to devise an automatic bone-posing system for skirts/long robes, long hairs, and big dangly sleeves (ala Gandalf). But we’re happy to say we’ve managed to build a robust system that should both satisfy players for creating the PC they envision, as well as reduce our own internal workload. There’ll be stuff to show on that in a couple of months after we’ve built more assets to plug into the system. In the meantime, check out some of the cool monsters we’ve been working on and see if you can recognize them from the module’s story. :)

Thanks for everyone’s input on our Stretch Goal Poll on Discord! It’s given us a very good indication for what you all want to see: more DLC adventures and Crafting. We’ll factor this into our planning, based on what we manage to raise over the course of this year for stretch goals.

On the programming front, Kevin (lead programmer) and Rich (rules programmer) have been busy and wrote their own mini updates on their progress.

Kevin
Last year, I had wisely postponed implementing Oracles because I grumbled that the original Oracle curse system did not translate well to a CRPG. After Paizo delivered the PC2 remaster, along with a completely redesigned Oracle class, I was eager to finally bring Oracles into the game, along with all of their unique spells, feats, and (of course) curses!

With future expansion packs in mind, I implemented all of the required higher-level feats for all the PC2 classes since these will be needed for the expansion packs (and for various villainous characters who just might happen to be "slightly" higher level than the player).

One of the promises that we made during the Kickstarter campaign was to add full-party creation support to The Dragon's Demand. So, I implemented a completely new user interface in the pre-game, which allows players to create an entire party of playable characters rather than just a single character.

Recently, we migrated The Dragon's Demand from the Unity 5 engine to the Unity 6 engine, which is the most advanced Unity version currently on the market. I don't think anyone would describe an engine migration as easy, and this one certainly was not. However, this upgrade allows us to access all of the cool new Unity engine features. On the technical side, one of my first changes was to migrate from our old method of launching asynchronous tasks to Unity's new tasking system. Because Unity's new tasking system is better integrated with Unity's game loop, this change solved a large number of annoying race conditions and timing-related crashes, such as characters not immediately stopping what they were doing when the game was paused. Overall, we're very pleased with the new engine performance.

Rich
I have been updating our scripts and stored procedures which access, manipulate and extract the data in the format we need from the Remastered Rules Database. There are currently 60 different configuration files to migrate the database rules tables, and once they were imported into the game, there was a lot of work to address the many changes required to cater for the addition, removal and renaming of feats, spells, class features, traits and formulas that the remastered ruleset brought. We are currently working through each of the classes to ensure any changes to the remastered core classes are implemented, while ensuring that our automatic level-up utility uses the extra spells and feats that were added in the remastered rules.

Pathfinder: The Dragon's Demand - Kickstarter Update 14

by Hiddenx, 17:06

Couchpotato spotted Kickstarter update 14 for Pathfinder: The Dragon's Demand:

Update 14: Development News and Stretch Goal Poll

Greetings Demanders!

We’ve been running a poll on our Discord to see which Kickstarter stretch goal backers are most interested in getting next. So far, the Temple of the Dark Tapestry DLC has taken the lead, with Crafting not far behind. Note that basic Crafting will already be in the base game, including crafting quick items like bombs, elixirs, oils, and poisons, while the Crafting stretch goal expands this to include magical item crafting (including potions, scrolls, and runes), snares, and ammunition. This is your opportunity to let us know what you want, so be sure to cast your vote in the #official-polls channel! https://discord.gg/9vySKnBNSS

We’ve been hard at work fleshing out two of our most important gameplay systems from their prototypes: our 3D grid system and swappable armour system. Our new automated grid tool is now able to chop up an area into grid cubes using a complex set of instructions for determining what’s walkable, climbable, etc. and store information for factors that impact movement (ex: difficult terrain). Next up is implementing dynamic grid cubes for things like summoning a Wall of Stone, which could either block characters or be climbed.

The swappable armour system is actually part of a broader character body system for all kinds of wearable equipment, where we can change bodies between medium and buff versions, swap heads and hairstyles, hide body parts, and transfer character poses. We haven’t decided if we’ll show very small equipment like rings and necklaces because they’ll likely be hard to see and so not worth the implementation time, but if you have an opinion on that, feel free to let us know on Discord! Up next will be taking an armour set across multiple ancestries and genders, where it’ll need to be manually adjusted to fit the different body proportions.

Regarding our coins, there was a delay at the mint towards the end of last year, so production has only gotten in gear in January. The order has been placed for thousands of copper blanks needed for the copper and plated coins (that have copper cores), and silver blanks. Our coin designs and their 3D coin digital files were all finalized before the campaign, so those will soon be made into the dies used to strike the coins.

Lastly, our character artists have been busy making more characters and monsters, including the druid Azmur Kell and the Grioth Fighter (with a voidglass sword that appears glassy ingame).

Philip, our art director, also finished the printable STL version of the Grioth Fighter and is busy printing it now. It’s a Large size creature, and as you can see from the shot below comparing it to the regular Grioth, it’s a hulking monster!!

Pathfinder: The Dragon's Demand - Rules Implementation

by Hiddenx, 18:46

Pathfinder: The Dragon's Demand is now is now over 78% funded; learn more about the implementation of the rules:

Update 5: Pathfinder Rules Implementation

The project is now over 78% funded with over 5,600 backers!

Greetings Demanders!

I’m Kevin Smith, lead programmer on Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand, and in this update I’ll be getting into more detail about about the remastered Pathfinder Second Edition rules implementation we’ve been working on.

At Ossian Studios, we know that there are two types of RPG players: those who want to spend at least six hours on the character generation screen, and those who want to jump into the story as quickly as possible. Consequently, we have designed our character creation screens to seamlessly support both styles of play. You can pick from a variety of fun pre-generated characters, or you can create a completely custom character and drill-down into all the details by selecting from hundreds of options, including Feats and Spells. As many of you already know, the Pathfinder character generation process can be extremely complicated, but we are working hard to make it both fun and easy to understand by providing a highly flexible sheet-based user interface that rivals any other CRPG on the market today.

After character creation, as your party gains experience from adventuring, you'll be able to level up any party member using just a single mouse click. Alternatively, you can delve deeply into any character's details and hand select every level up option imaginable.

As part of a robust level up system, we hope that our backers help us unlock the Multiclass Archetypes stretch goal because this will unleash a vast array of powerful and highly customized characters! Pathfinder’s Multiclass Archetypes can be used to create exciting combinations of different character classes. You'll be able to customize your own character, and all of your party members. But remember that all of the enemy NPCs also benefit from Multiclass Archetypes, so expect more unique and exciting new challenges during strategic combat encounters.

Behind the scenes, our Rules Engine orchestrates everything in the game, from Exploration Mode to Combat Mode. The Rules Engine directly loads a huge amount of tabular data that was extracted directly from the official Paizo rule books (thank you Archives of Nethys!). Supporting the Rules Engine are our generic frameworks for Feats, Spells, and Actions. We have tested both the Rules Engine and the frameworks by implementing hundreds of Feats, Spells, and Actions up to tenth level. The frameworks can support the addition of new Feats, Spells, Actions, and even Character Classes with relative ease.

From the very beginning, we knew that this would be a Pathfinder Second Edition game, rather than a converted First Edition game. Although we began developing this game long before the Remastered Pathfinder Rules were invented, Paizo graciously provided us with very early access to the new rules. Consequently we've had a significant amount of time to adapt our custom game systems to support the new remastered Second Edition rules.

Developing a game of this size and complexity is certainly extremely challenging! What are some of the things we tangle with on a daily basis? The sheer quantity of Feats and Spells that we are implementing is a huge challenge (I actually love implementing these!). The Pathfinder Rules, although very well designed, have many unique edge cases, which are not well described. We often have to pause and debate exactly what should happen in various complex scenarios. As much as possible, we stay true to the Pathfinder rules-as-written, but also adapt where necessary to make a better CRPG experience.

Despite these many challenges, we have already implemented all Second Edition core Ancestries, Backgrounds, Classes, Deities, Heritages, the vast majority of Class Features, and all level-up benefits including gained spells and spell slots.

After the game is funded, we're looking forward to interacting directly with our many backers to help prioritize key game features, and even debate how to resolve some of those tricky rules edge cases! Please help spread the word about the game so that we can attract more backers! Thanks for all of your help so far!

Thanks Couchpotato!
