Prey - The Shock Mod

by Silver, 10:44

GameWatcher reports on a mod for Prey that aims to make the gameplay more like System Shock.

The creator's main beef with the new Prey release is that it's not all that balanced, with greatly overpowered firearms, virtually infinite resources, and no tough gameplay decisions to make. SHOCK changes all of that, introducing attributes ala System Shock 2, complete ability reworks (and new abilities to boot), chipset overhauls, Neuromod rebalance, more interesting loot, and lots more.

Prey - Mooncrash DLC Review

by Silver, 13:18

Gamingbolt reviewed the Mooncrash DLC for Prey and have a favourable impression.

It’s important to note that Mooncrash for PS4 and Xbox One is not standalone content, so in order to play it you must own a physical or digital copy of Prey. And if you haven’t played it yet, you’re missing out on a lot. The game doesn’t have much for tutorials. It will assume that you’ve played the main game and expects you to understand the basics of the controls as you move forward. So, keep that in mind if you decide to buy this without having played the main game. Also, Mooncrash is really a continuation of the Prey game shortly thereafter, and you will see some characters from the main story within it. So, yes, you need to play the base game till the end before you begin the DLC.

Prey - Mooncrash DLC Released

by Silver, 05:50

A new DLC for Prey has been released called Mooncrash.

loading...

ABOUT THIS CONTENT

Fight overwhelming odds to escape a secret TranStar moon base where the enemies you encounter, the hazards you face, the goals you complete, and the loot you collect are different each time you play. With changing environments as dangerous as they are dynamic, the Mooncrash campaign for Prey will offer a fun, infinitely replayable challenge to test even the most skilled players.

Story:

In Prey: Mooncrash, TranStar's secret moon base stopped transmitting shortly after the events of Prey. Now Peter, a hacker stationed aboard a spy satellite tasked with intercepting TranStar communications, must find out why. Trapped and under a ruthless contract with KASMA Corp, Peter's only hope of ever seeing his family again is uncovering the moon base's lost secrets.

Features:

  • Live. Die. Adapt. Escape!
Escape TranStar's moon base before the Typhon threat takes over. A simple goal, but one with hundreds of viable solutions. In Mooncrash, players will experience an all-new, infinitely replayable, ‘rogue-lite' campaign with ever-changing enemies, weapons and objectives against a constantly increasing alien threat.
  • Survive How You Want with Who You Want
Unlock multiple characters as you play, each with their own set of specialized, upgradable skills. Will you forge your path with the resourceful engineer Joan, trade that wrench in for Security Officer Bhatia and his shotgun, or will you choose the frail-but-gifted Andrius and his arsenal of psychic abilities? Prey is about choices, and those choices belong to you.
  • Search for Secrets, Loot...and a Way Off
Arkane Studios' talent for detail and story-rich environments comes alive in Mooncrash. As you explore the station, which is the same size and scope of four levels of the original game's Talos I station, don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for precious supplies - and, of course, Mimics.
  • New Challenges, New Solutions
The Typhon threat has returned with familiar foes and tough new enemies, each armed with a unique set of deadly characteristics. Use the full power of the arsenal at your disposal, including popular weapons and abilities from Prey's main game, to fight for your life and make a mad dash for your escape.
  • Prey: Typhon Hunter
Mooncrash also includes the upcoming Typhon Hunter multiplayer update, a tense game of hide and seek between a single survivor and five other players who stalk, hunt, and hide in plain sight as mimics. Typhon Hunter update is expected to release later this summer on all platforms.

RPGWatch Feature - Prey Review

by Myrthos, 11:36

Corwin checked out Prey and found many things he liked about it.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there arrived a much under-appreciated game called System Shock which was light years ahead of its time. I rarely replay games, but this one I have played three times and could easily play again. A few years later saw the advent of a sequel, amazingly called System Shock 2. Now comes a new game Prey which at the very least has been made as an 'homage' and a spiritual successor to the original SS.

Some may argue that both System Shock and indeed Prey are not really RPG's, but I beg to differ. You are most definitely playing a specific character who grows and develops throughout the game, though not in the same manner as your more traditional RPG; there is no experience, for example. Instead, as you solve and complete quests you are able to open up and unlock new skill trees which allow you to customise your character precisely in the way you choose to do so. For example, there are three main ways to fight in the game; melee, guns, and psi-powers. You can choose to focus on developing one of these, or spread yourself around. Either way, at times, you will need to use all three.

Prey - Will there be a sequel?

by Silver, 12:46

@PCGamesN Arkane are making an online game next amidst disappointing sales for Prey and Dishonored 2.

A new job ad suggests Arkane's next project will be an online game, and probably a live, ‘service' game of the kind that are so popular these days.

The advertised role is for an online game engineer at Arkane's Texas studio - they collaborated with Arkane's Lyon team on Dishonored 1 before the two studios split to focus on their own projects. Arkane Lyon worked on Dishonored 2, while Arkane Austin handled this year's Prey. Both are thought to have sold under expectations, particularly Prey.

Prey - Flying was cut

by Silver, 15:07

@PCGamesN There was an attempt to make flying work in Prey but it was cut to save the graphics designers sanity.

One of the best things about Prey is how it gives you the tools you need to get to unexpected places. With a jetpack hover, a pillar of levitating energy, and a cannon filled with hardening adhesive, you can get almost anywhere you want with a bit of imagination. At one point, though, Prey's levels were fully open, from top to bottom - you could fly.

Prey - Hardcore Mod

by Silver, 12:49

@PCGamesN Prey now has a new hardcore mode called Prey for Death thanks to a mod.

With speedrunners now completing Prey in less than 8 minutes, you may be looking for a way to make Arkane's sci-fi horror a bit more challenging. Creatively named ‘Prey for Death', this gameplay mod drastically increases Prey's difficulty level.

Created by modder jvames, Prey for Death reintroduces several missing mechanics that were supposed to be in Prey. Morgan Yu will now suffer specific injuries like burns, concussions, bone fractures and even partial blindness. You now have to use specific cures to heal your ailments, with Medical Operators getting rid of any injuries you may have. The mod also activates a cut skill called Field Surgeon, where regular med-kits will heal all of your injuries. The downside of this is that scoffing a bunch of food no longer heals as much health, while downing a bottle of water does nothing to heal you.

Prey - Review @ RPG Site

by Hiddenx, 09:04

RPG Site has reviewed Prey:

Prey Review

[...]

While not strictly an RPG, Prey blends in a lot of familiar RPG mechanics and conventions as it unfolds from this premise. While having skill trees and a limited selection of stat options is nowadays ubiquitous among many video game genres, Prey goes beyond just incorporating these devices. As the sequence of the Talos station compromise unveils itself throughout the course of the game, Morgan will encounter the histories of the station's inhabitants, some alive, many dead, and learn about the events that occurred before the outset of the game. The player will uncover notes on corpses, read old emails and logs, and encounter living persons also looking for a way off the station. Through this process, Morgan will uncover many quests asking the player to dig deeper into the lives of the Talos inhabitants.

[...]

The main narrative of Prey is not as strong as the smaller side stories uncovered in the email logs and quest progression, but it's still relatively solid and enough of a motivation to move the game forward. The player is initially given a certain perception of Alex Yu, Morgan's brother that is seemingly at fault with the problems that have occurred on Talos, and January, Morgan's quasi-AI operator that guides the player throughout the game. As the narrative unfolds, certain players can have different takes on which general path is more appropriate as they move towards the game's conclusion. There isn't a clear answer on which of the game's multiple endings is the most appropriate one, which is a credit to the game's solid writing. As soon as I saw one ending, I immediately wanted to see the other and loaded a save to see it as well. It's unfortunate though that the final conclusion of the game occurs regardless of which permutation of ending conditions was carried out.

Prey may borrow heavily from its predecessors but also blends them in a way and tackles a subject that comes across as refreshing and new even if the mechanics underneath are functionally derivative. The systems in place are familiar and recognizable but the machine built from these components is new and worthwhile. In this way, Prey follows up on its own primary theme in the most straightforward way: it takes common ideas and designs but out of these ingredients, still manages to form its own unique identity.

Prey - Reviews

by Hiddenx, 01:25

Farflame spotted more reviews and articles for Prey:

CulturedVultures: 7/10

Prey mixes BioShock with Dishonored and a dash of System Shock - the result is an engrossing setting with palpable tension, tons of reasons to explore and a compelling narrative that takes a couple surprising turns. It is marred rather significantly by stale combat, a few easily-broken quests that snuck by QC and a clear preference in its intended playstyle, but Prey's story, setting and unmistakable character nonetheless make it well worth a run through.

GoodIsAGeek: 8/10

Prey is a good game, a little confused by it’s own identity taking ideas from a variety of different games, but it meshes them all together into a game very much focused on exploration. The sound and level design is excellent, but where I do have hesitation is that by providing the player with so much freedom in how they play the experiences can vary wildly. By sticking to the main story and not choosing to explore you will miss an awful lot of what makes Prey such an enjoyable single player experience, and that potentially is a problem.

CramGaming: 8.5/10

Prey offers a neat multi-tiered free-form action first person adventure for players to dive in. Replay is high with the various options within the skill-tree advancement and personal choices made. After 30 hours and beyond it’s safe to say the finale is worth the price of entry and certainly has to be seen first hand. Prey is one very cool game which you might loathe at the beginning but eventually love after the end credits have rolled. It’s a mesmerising experience, cleverly crafted and worthy of your time and money especially if you’re a fan of stealth action games. Shooter fans with little patience might not make it to where the gameplay becomes more interesting, but if you persevere you’ll be rewarded with an enjoyable game that can be played with multiple styles.

Prey - Review @ Nerdist

by Hiddenx, 08:31

The Nerdist has reviewed Prey:

PREY Is a Terrifically Terrifying Game with Imaginative Gameplay

After waking up in a posh apartment with a stunning view of the city, you start your day as (either a male or female) Morgan Yu, a scientist who appears to be participating in some sort of experiment. Just as the fear that something isn’t quite right starts to sink in, your perception is turned on its head. To avoid diving into spoiler territory, I won’t explain what happens; know that’s the game is best experienced without any prior knowledge of the plot. Once the horror-infused world of Arkane Studios‘ Prey starts to unfold, you’re sent on a terrifying sci-fi trek through the sprawling Talos-1 space station.

[...]

The Verdict

While a relatively short play at 13 hours, Prey is a challenging game that you’ll want to explore again as soon as you reach the final scene. Though it bears a striking resemblance to several other titles, it holds its own with creative puzzle solving, a complex setting that is fun to traverse, and enemies that will scare the ever-living crap out of you and give you nightmares.

Prey - Review @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 20:10

PC Gamer has reviewed Prey:

Prey review

I need to get into this office. That's not entirely true. I want to get into this office, and Prey has taught me that where there's a will, there's a way. The door is unhackable, and its keycard could theoretically be anywhere on the Talos-I space station. It's time to get creative. The windows into the office are breakable, but the gap is too small for me to squeeze through. Also, my standard trick of using the Mimic power to turn into a smaller object won't work. There's no window ledge to perch on, and mugs, understandably, cannot jump very high. There is, however, a computer terminal in view of the window. I've got an idea.

I leave and head for a fabrication station, and spend some of my resources to create a toy crossbow and a pack of foam darts. It's a joke weapon, but, in the right circumstances, a legitimately useful tool. Returning to the window, I shoot a dart at the computer's touch screen—specifically at a large square marked "Utility". Bingo. A menu opens, and inside is an option to unlock the door. Another carefully aimed dart, and I'm able to enter.

Prey is at its best in these moments of creative problem solving. Every closed door presents a multitude of possibilities, whether that's transforming into office detritus, hacking a lock, or simply stumbling upon a keycard—like I did, moments later, on a corpse just meters away from the door. It's a first person immersive sim of the kind Arkane specialises in, but nevertheless offers a very different style and experience to the recent Dishonored 2.

[...]

Unfortunately, some sidequests don't quite land, and for a variety of reasons. One—a pretty lengthy revenge tale—just sort of ends, and in some potentially silly ways. Another—this time based around a difficult moral choice, with fairly heavy emotional stakes for both Yu and another survivor—was entirely undercut by having a separate character call in about a critical objective. Repositioning to hear what the caller was saying, I accidentally triggered yet another character's dialogue. In the end, four people were talking over each other about different missions and I was forced to reload and try again.

Many of Prey's issues are a consequence of its broad range of options. Attempting to cater to a variety of play styles is laudable, but also means that Prey isn't as good a stealth game as Dishonored, nor as good a combat game as BioShock. But while the individual parts have problems, Prey is nonetheless greater than the sum of them. Prey is worth playing, mostly thanks to the strength of Talos-I as a setting, and the excellent environment design. It's fun to explore, full of interesting stories, and also looks and sounds great. Frequently, Prey's strengths build to create a tense and compelling atmosphere. And then it usually undermines it all with yet another goddamn Mimic.

Score: 79/100

Prey - More Reviews

by Hiddenx, 19:49

Farflame spotted two reviews for Prey:

Gaming Boulevard:

[...]

Conclusion:

Prey is a worthy reboot of a franchise I hope to see more of in the future. The atmosphere is incredible thanks to the gorgeous graphics and impressive soundtrack. Exploring the thrilling space station while discovering the truth step by step really is something different and there are moments you’re completely sucked into the game. Prey has a lot of memorable moments thanks to the enemies and the alien enhancements but is a little too rough around the edges at this point. It’s a great game, one you should definitely try out, but it needs a little more polish to really become legendary good. That being said, it’s a game worthy of your time and money!

Score: 8/10

Starburst:

[...]

Unfortunately there are a few failings that cannot be ignored. At first glance the story seems extremely clichéd and one-note, and it takes quite some time for you to truly get to grips with it. What's more, many of the ideas present are delivered with some unfortunately heavy handed elements which makes it harder to notice the more nuanced ideas at first; a problem which is only made worse when it's later revealed that quite a few seemingly major choices were largely arbitrary in the grand scheme of things.

However, the big ones here stem largely from odd blind spots in the PC port, which are more irritating rather than truly game breaking. The UI for starters features a number of very bizarre elements which run counter to the game's actual functionality, and the game settings can't be saved if the .cfg file they are pathed to features non-Latin letters. Equally, the inventory design itself is excellent, but you bump into oddities, such as how it starts glitching when full and can often outright refuse to stack items in one pile when you automatically grab them. None of these are game breakers (and nothing here even comes close to Dishonored 2's problems) but they're things which start to weigh down on you after a few hours, after you're forced to repeatedly stop and fix what shouldn't be a problem in the first place.

As a result of all this, Prey might not be quite the revolutionary experience some predicted it would be, but nevertheless hits all the right notes to be a great space borne horror experience. If you're starved of Dead Space and looking for something new to satisfy that itch, then definitely take a look at this one.

Prey - Crafting the Story of Prey

by Silver, 03:11

Arkane share Chris Avellones contribution to the story and characters of Prey.

...
"It probably took a year before we actually came up with the narrative of the 60s, along with the all of the history and layers that became the pillars of the game," Colantonio says.

"It was a long time before we were even creating dialogue," Bare adds. "We initially focused on structure with level designers, motives, objectives, backstory with the artists. And then we were just grinding on our one-page synopsis over and over to get it refined."

Enter Avellone

Along the way, Arkane looped in some outside voices as well. Harvey Smith, who was now fully focused on Dishonored 2 at Arkane's Lyon studio, helped come up with a rationale for the existence of the Typhon aliens. Austin Grossman, an award-winning writer who worked on System Shock along with Dishonored and Dishonored 2, helped refine some of the early ideas in the original synopsis, including how main character Morgan Yu would uncover his missing memories. And then the team reached out to industry legend Chris Avellone (Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance) to join the writing team - which was a dream come true for Ricardo Bare.

"Before I was even in the games industry, one of my favorite games of all time was Planescape: Torment," Bare says. "There were several other games I really liked that had kickass characters as well. I later realized they were all written by the same guy." Bare met Avellone for the first time when they were on a panel together at PAX East in 2013. "It was a cool fanboy moment for me," he smiles.

The admiration was mutual, and Avellone jumped at the chance to work with Arkane. Colantonio initially reached out to Avellone, but he was busy at the time - something Avellone wanted to rectify as soon as his schedule cleared up. "I dropped Raf a line and asked if he'd still be interested in working together," he says. "It was a quick conversation, and things went from there to visiting the studio, seeing the pitch for the game, the pillars - both for the game and the studio's approach to development, which shows in their titles - and dissecting the design docs."

Avellone also looked forward to reuniting with his former PAX co-panelist. "I already knew Prey's lead designer and lead writer Ricardo Bare from previous narrative gatherings and I'd read his work and enjoyed it. (Among his many talents, he made dwarves terrifying in his novel Jack of Hearts.) So working with the two of them and the Arkane crew seemed like a great opportunity - and it was."

Prey - Recycle Everything

by Hiddenx, 19:56

'You should recycle everything' - this is an environmentally friendly message from the new Prey trailer:

Prey - Recycle Everything

loading...

Earth Day might be all about our planet… but that won’t stop us from celebrating while aboard Talos I. In honor of the global holiday, we took a moment to tidy up our orbiting space station, recycling anything and everything we could find, then using the handy Recycler Charge to clean up some more. From trash to treasures to Typhon aliens, we’re going green in the most awesome way imaginable.

Prey - All About Alien Powers

by Silver, 23:02

@RockPaperShotgun Prey is all about alien powers and it is what distinguishes this game from its peers according to Alec Meer.

...
It was there, polished and pacey, absolutely the kind of thing I traditionally enjoy in an action game - but it was guns and monsters and doorcodes. Where was the thing that made Prey unique? I've been back and played a later section of the game, amongst other things I've transformed myself into a stack of towels and now I have a much clearer sense of what this new Prey really is. I can show as well as tell you why.

The thing that we all got hot under the collar about when real details of Arkane's Prey reboot began to trickle out was the option for alien-derived powers, in addition to gunplay and Deus Exy hacking/strength/stealth abilities. Turn into a cup! Yeah, man. I'm down for that. That the idea of roleplaying as an inanimate object while playing an exciting action game is what most appeals probably says far more about me than I am comfortable with. Regardless of whatever unhealthy interest in kitchenware I might possess, it was a mild disappointment that my first hands-on encounter with Prey had all the alien stuff locked away.

The new section I played is, in terms of the game's internal chronology, about 45 minutes on from where the first chunk left off. I'll dodge story stuff, of which there was in any case less, this time around, and focus on features. Features like this:

Prey - Typhon Abilities

Thesixthaxis made a list of things you should know about Prey:

10 Things To Know About Prey And The Typhon Abilities

If you're not looking forward to Arcane Studios reboot of Prey, well... you should be! This is the developer behind the excellent Dishonored series, and they're bringing that kind of sensibility to Prey when it releases at the start of next month, with a deeply psychological twist and a fascinating decrepit space station to explore.

Prey - Not a sequel

by Hiddenx, 00:01

Arkane's Ricardo Bare talked with GamesIndustry.biz about Prey:

"It's not the Michael Bay of games"

Arkane's Ricardo Bare explains why immersive sims are here to stay, and why Prey took its name from a franchise it has essentially no connection to

[...]

"It's not a sequel," Bare said. "It's not fictionally connected. It's like, movies and books come out that have the same title all the time that have nothing to do with each other... I would not see it as a Prey game. I would see it as a game from Arkane that is called Prey. The name is a really good name, and that's the part that matters."

That's not to say the game has no proper predecessors. Like Bare said, it's part of a tradition of immersive sims that has been trending upward in the last decade. Bare acknowledged that 2007's BioShock sparked the genre in a big way, but prior to that, Arkane was one of a handful of studios carrying the torch with titles like Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. When asked why the genre fell out of favor for a stretch, Bare said it was at least partly because immersive sims are just really difficult to make.

Prey - Opening Hour Hands On

by Hiddenx, 09:33

PCGamesN checked out the first hour of Prey:

Hands-on with Prey's opening hour: Arkane put sci-fi horror at centre stage

loading...

Morgan Yu and Groundhog Day’s Bill Murray are hardly doppelgangers, but there are similarities. At the time of Prey’s introduction sequence, Morgan appears to have been stuck in something of a rut, living the same day out over and over - wake up, go to facility to do baffling tests, rinse and repeat - for who knows how long. However, ‘90s comedy drama does not await. The exact circumstances of Morgan’s loop haven’t allowed the situational awareness needed for the wisecracks and world-weary hijinx that Murray came to make his calling card in Punxsutawney, PA. Like I said: not doppelgangers, but Morgan and Bill might find common ground if they got to talking.

The game begins in earnest with a wrench smashing through your flat window and exposing the world for what it is: a dingy test facility in which you’ve been the unwitting guinea-pig. Prey’s near-future world has gone to heck, and over the course of a tentative journey through that test facility’s corridors, you’re educated as to exactly how bad things have become.

Prey - Arkane Interview

by Silver, 19:46

PCGamer talked to Arkane who had a lot to say about Prey.

"Dishonored is probably the legacy of Thief," says Raphael Colantonio, CEO of Arkane and creative director of Prey. "Prey is the legacy of something like System Shock." And, just like that game, it takes place on a space station.

Prey is set on Talos I, an orbital space station created to research shadowy non-terrestrial lifeforms that, surprise, has now been overrun by shadowy non-terrestrial lifeforms. Built from the shell of a Soviet satellite, the station is owned by the TranStar Corporation. It's a lavish art deco space, augmented by futuristic technology-reminiscent of BioShock, albeit more functional and without the whale. You play Morgan Yu, a man (or woman) with ties to TranStar's neuroscience research program.

As part of Yu's involvement in Talos I's psychotronics division, you're able to scan and acquire powers from the aliens-known as Typhons. There are survivors, but Yu will spend much of his time alone in the abandoned sectors of Talos I. Survival is a matter of using your tools, upgrading your powers and manipulating your environment. And sometimes transforming into a coffee mug.

Arkane's attitude to systems design is summarised by a picture hanging on the wall of its Austin studio. Among a selection of motivational posters depicting Prey's core design pillars is an image of Just Cause 2's Rico riding on top of an airliner. The accompanying text reads, "Say yes to the player."

"It's an instinct we try to cultivate," says Ricardo Bare, Prey's lead designer. "When you're playing a game and you hit an obstacle, you're just naturally like, ‘I'm going to try this.' We try, as developers, to remember that instinct and say yes to it."

Prey - Frontrunner for GotY 2017?

by Hiddenx, 17:12

Gamesradar already found a strong candidate for the Game of The Year 2017: Prey

Why Prey is already frontrunner for game of the year 2017

As much as we try - as is only healthy and correct - to hold off early critical judgements, and let games meander the merry path of development unsullied by early assumption and prejudice, some seem to flag up their potential pretty brazenly from the start.

We're not always right, of course. For every out-of-nowhere, critical step-up like Titanfall 2, there's a surprise disappointment like Mafia 3. But, eschewing all cheap, lazy, forum snark and flailing fanboy hype from the equation, some games just set off a certain kind of signal. And already, just a few months out from its first gameplay reveal at Quakecon 2016, with only one additional preview session at Arkane’s Austin studio since then, Prey looks like it might have a chance of being one of 2017’s biggest and most important standouts.

Why? Well there are the obvious reasons of pedigree, of course. Certain studios earn the right to command confidence, and Arkane has arguably hit that stage now. Best known to the mainstream console gamer for Dishonored and last year's Dishonored 2, Arkane is the game dev supergroup when it comes to the dynamic, open-ended systemic gameplay of the emergent sim genre, its members having collectively worked on BioShock, Deus Ex, System Shock and Half-Life 2 in the past. Doing for option-laden, player-driven stealth sandboxes what Super Mario Galaxy did for the 3D platformer, Arkane's two most recent games represent a studio with decades of none-stronger insight into the fundamentals of its chosen genre, yet an uninhibited, forward-looking thirst for exploration and evolution.

PCGamesN gives an overview of skills, weapons and gameplay mechanics of Prey:

Nemesis-style threat, glue guns and telekinesis - Prey's aliens and abilities explained

An extended Prey gameplay trailer with explanation and expansion from the devs themselves.

Arkane are all set to release their next game, Prey, in 2017. An immersive sim like Dishonored 2, Prey takes players to a single interconnected map: a space station called Talos 1. Up there in the stars, you’ll be taking on alien creatures and weaponising their own powers against them, as well as using makeshift weaponry that you chance upon. Arkane are now revealing some of that equipment, speaking about the powers and peeling back some of the mystery behind the inky alien threat.

Prey - Channels the Spirit of System Shock

by Hiddenx, 22:09

PC Gamer thinks that the upcoming FPS Prey channels the spirit of System Shock:

Prey channels the spirit of System Shock

Arkane's RPG draws inspiration from the king of sci-fi immersive sims.

If you've been paying attention to PC Gamer's coverage, you may remember Prey as the game in which you can turn into a mug. That was the exciting revelation from this year's Quakecon—the footage of which is now available online. Last month, I got to visit Arkane Austin and see a little more of the studio's next immersive sim. Where the initial footage focused on the powers, here I saw more of how Prey will differentiate itself from Dishonored. It's not just the setting. With Prey, Arkane is looking back to its history.

Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio describes immersive sims as a spectrum. If Dishonored is focused more on the action and stealth side, Prey is more of an RPG. The comparison made is to Arkane's first game, Arx Fatalis. Prey is still first-person, but its progression and crafting systems are more focused on specific character builds, and the combat is slower and more deliberate. In terms of lineage, if Dishonored is a descendant of Thief, Prey is a descendant of System Shock.

The most obvious difference is that Prey isn't a stealth game. Rather, it's an RPG with stealth. Much like Bioshock, you won't be able to take down the most powerful enemies with a single sneak attack—at least not without speccing for critical damage, or upgrading your wrench. Instead, the most useful application for stealth is to scan Prey's shadowy aliens—called Typhon. Scanning Typhon lets you learn their resistances and weaknesses, and can also add alien powers to your upgrade tree. This is how you're able to transform into a mug, via the Mimic skill that lets you target and take on the form of any nearby physics object.
