Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Review

by Hiddenx, 18:47

Gamespot reviewed Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven:

This polished remake of an obscure JRPG gem is the most inviting way to dive into Square Enix's long-running SaGa series.

SaGa stands as one of Square Enix's longest-running series, but it's also had a rough time outside of Japan. If you pick up a random SaGa game, you'll probably understand why: SaGa games are JRPGs that don't do things in the way most overseas players would expect. SaGa tends to focus more on complex, interweaving systems of combat, character growth, and questing. And that's supplemented by narratives that tend to act more as connective tissue that link locations and objectives together instead of the sprawling, character-driven stories the genre has become known for. Wandering around blindly and piecing out what to do and how things work in a SaGa game can be incredibly compelling, but some entries in the franchise lean toward immensely frustrating. Romancing SaGa 2 is more the former than the latter, but its earlier releases were still an acquired taste.

[...]

Regardless, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a superb remake of a classic game that rarely received due recognition outside of Japan. It's filled with systems that are fun to explore and utilize alongside a core gameplay conceit that remains unique. If you're looking for a different take on JRPGs--or just a unique RPG in general--this is a lengthy journey you'll want to invest lots of time into.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Interview

by Hiddenx, 12:30

The Outerhaven interviewed Shinichi Tatsuke, the lead producer of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven:

Interviewing Shinichi Tatsuke on Romancing SaGa 2’s Modern Reimagining

We recently had the opportunity to ask Shinichi Tatsuke, the lead producer of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a few questions about the game. As our review of the game shows, the game itself is an incredible experience! How did the team manage to bring this classic title so successfully into the modern era?

A big thanks to Shinichi Tatsuke for taking time out of his business schedule to grant us this interview.

Q1. (Scott Adams): When remaking an older game from the Romancing SaGa series, what is the design philosophy you held for the game to not lose the original’s splendor?

Shinichi Tatsuke: Early on we defined what parts of the game were important to the identity of Romancing SaGa 2 and made the decision not to make major changes to those parts. Specifically, these were the worldview, the general framework of the story, and systems such as the Inheritance system, Glimmers, and Formations. Meanwhile, we made a series of modifications to the parts of the game that felt challenging to play as a modern RPG. The battle system and growth system both underwent major overhauls, and we also added dialogue to cutscenes to make them feel more natural. As a result, I believe this has become a game suited for the current era while still building on the great qualities of the original title.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Review

RPG Site reviewed Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven:

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Review

Back at the beginning of the year, one of my gaming resolutions for 2024 was to wet my toes in the pool that is Square Enix's SaGa franchise. While this series had grown up alongside its more famous sibling, Final Fantasy, these were always games that, for one reason or another, I just passed on. But no more! The SaGa series has had a surprisingly good year with the release of not only a completely new entry, Emerald Beyond, but also a ground-up remake of Romancing SaGa 2 in the form of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven — a game that I find quite lovely.

[...]

Romancing SaGa: Revenge of the Seven is like a bowl of hot soup on a cool autumn day — pure comfort food. This is a game I can just enjoy and relax with, grinding out skills, discovering villages in trouble, and seeing what I uncover along the way. The story was fun, with some neat twists and surprises, but it was never the main reason I kept playing. That accolade goes to the gameplay. I loved unwinding from a long day with a cold drink, my feet up, and just playing.

The unique approach to genre staples may not be for everyone, but for anyone looking to check out one of Square's legacy franchises, I’d recommend Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven in a heartbeat, or at the very least check out the free demo that’s out and see for your self. Regardless, it’s great to see new life being breathed into the franchise, and I hope Romancing SaGa 3 receives a similar remake treatment one day as well.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Demo Impressions

by Hiddenx, 11:49

The Outerhaven checked out the demo of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven:

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Demo Impressions

I had a chance to preview Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven during Pax West 2024. Then only just this past weekend, Square Enix announced that the game got a demo with the save data being transferred to the full game. This is my experience with the demo.

Beginning the Game
The demo of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the game’s prologue. You start as Emperor Leon helping train his son Gerard with the help of some of his bodyguards to fight off some goblins. This teaches you the basics of normal combat with skills, or magical abilities.

The mechanics are the same as I discussed in my preview for Pax so I am not going to get in-depth but the way the tutorial is such a slow burn that helps newcomers extremely well. This is absolutely going to be the SaGa game to introduce people to the style of game that the SaGa series is.

When you get back from the training, Gerard and Leon go to their kingdom of Avalon. Victor is the brother who holds down the castle as Leon and Gerard go through their adventures. When they come back to the castle, Leon gets a secret meeting with a masked woman who warns them of Kzinssie, a recently returned Hero apart of the Seven legendary heroes.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Interview

by Hiddenx, 17:46

RPG Site interviewed Shinichi Tatsuke about Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. A demo for the game is now avaiable:

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Interview - Talking remaking a niche classic with Shinichi Tatsuke

For us here at RPG Site, what was perhaps the biggest surprise of the June 2024 Nintendo Direct was the announcement of a full remake of Romancing SaGa 2, called Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. As a fan of the SaGa series, including the incredibly unique and incredibly underrated Romancing SaGa 2, this unexpected new version has me very curious about how it will shape up. Josh's preview from his hands-on opportunity at PAX West (and Cullen's from the newly-announced demo) has me even more eager for this great-looking remake.

[...]

RPG Site: How did the decision come about to remake Romancing SaGa 2, of all SaGa games?

Shinichi Tatsuke, Producer: To discuss the timeline of events on how the remake of Romancing SaGa 2 happened ... As you know, back in 2020 I was involved with the remake of the Trials of Mana. After that, the team and I were considering which title we should work on next. That was when the SaGa team approached me and asked me if I wanted to join the team for Romancing SaGa 2 remake. And that's how I got involved with the project.

So, to answer your question on 'why' we chose Romancing SaGa 2 out of all the SaGa titles.. the SaGa team has a goal of expanding the series to to wider audiences around the globe, not just in Japan. We wanted to make the series bigger, and we wanted to make a remake, just like we did for Trials of Mana, which is generally the background as to how this project happened. The reason why we chose Romancing SaGa 2 is that we already created a remake of Romancing SaGa 1 called Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song, which was originally released in 2006 and received a recent remaster. However, we hadn't done any remakes since then, so we figured that it was a good time to pick up on that again and make another remake for the SaGa series.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven remakes one of the most unconventional RPGs ever brilliantly - Preview

Not many modern game franchises enjoy the small, consistent prosperity that the SaGa series has established within the last decade. These RPGs aren’t Square Enix’s most well-known games, and they are not heavy-hitters when it comes to sales performance. Most SaGa fans, including me, are aware that part of the reason that us SaGa enjoyers are spoiled with new remasters and entries lately is thanks to the ongoing success of the Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe mobile game. We know this, we accept this, and to some extent, we embrace this.

Even over the last three years, SaGa players have feasted with SaGa Frontier Remastered, Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend, Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered, and just recently back in April, SaGa Emerald Beyond. I’ve been expecting the remaster treatment for SaGa Frontier 2 for a while, so I was completely caught off-guard when Square Enix pulled back the curtain on Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven a few months ago.

Never in my wildest dreams could I have predicted that this installment in the SaGa series would receive such a lavish remake, especially one that looks to have significantly higher production values than recent SaGa releases by a considerable margin. Even within the unconventional SaGa franchise, Romancing SaGa 2 is unlike any other game in the series.

It is beloved for sure, though it is mechanically dense and offers a huge nonlinear experience that embodies the “play your own way” philosophy of the SaGa series. There are many choices for players to make that they will have to commit to; there are little-to-no universal “right” or “correct” answers in how to play Romancing SaGa 2 which, to some degree, has gradually become antithetical to the expectations of the mainstream audience for RPGs.

Wccftech checked out Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven:

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Gamescom Hands-On Preview – A Masterful Revival

The SaGa series is far from being the most popular JRPG series ever, but it has managed, over the years, to garner a cult following thanks to its unique features that set it apart from the vast majority of JRPGs, such as unique progression mechanics, and open-ended scenarios closer to traditional role-playing games developed in the West. Despite the lack of widespread recognition and success, the series has continued, and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven could be the breakthrough the series by Akitoshi Kawazu has been seeking since its inception in 1989, thanks to some choice improvements to the formula.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the remake of the second entry in the Romancing subseries series originally released back in 1993 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed by Xeen Inc., the same studio behind Trials of Mana, the game shares a lot of its visual identity with the remake of the third entry in the Mana series, with a distinct anime feel that breathes new life into the game's world. As such, the game clicked almost instantly with me when I tried it during Gamescom 2024, being a long-time fan of the series who kinda drifted away from it when the franchise started experimenting with different types of visual styles with games such as Unlimited SaGa.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Introduces Characters, Systems

Square Enix released new screenshots and details for the upcoming Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, its full remake of Super Famicom RPG Romancing SaGa 2. The update introduces a selection of new characters as well as providing more information on the game’s glimmer system, development and progression elements, and its free-form scenario.

Rather than featuring a single party, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven sees players control a lineage of emperors in a long-running battle against the Seven Heroes of ancient myth. The update features seven new characters and their associated classes: Regulus, Rose, Shiyuan, Jubei, Natalia, Siero, and Thetis. Regulus and Rose are Freelance Mages conducting research at the Incantations Lab. Regulus is adept at hydrology and terrology, while Rose excels in pyrology and terrology. Shiyuan is a renowned Strategist from the Imperial University who is proficient at magic but has misgivings about the usage of umbrology. Jubei is a member of the Levante Guard - warriors from the east who swear fealty to the Emperor — and uses a style of swordplay passed down across generations from the Kingdom of Yauda.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven - Preview

RPG Site checked out the upcoming Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven:

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven introduces several Character Classes, how its Battle System works, its non-linear Free-form Scenarios, and more

Square Enix provided a new extensive update on Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, the upcoming full 3D remake of Romancing SaGa 2 that was first revealed back a few months ago. A new blog post delves deep into a few aspects of this RPG tailored for both newcomers and veterans of the SaGa games.

There will be over 30 classes available to players in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven; several of them were introduced including the Nomad, Crusader, and Martial Artist. There are even specific unconventional classes, such as the Saigo Clansman and Salamander; every class has its distinct strengths that interface with Romancing SaGa 2's systems in their own way.

People in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven can see enemies on the field and launch a pre-emptive strike on them to gain the upper hand in battles immediately. Foes will receive some damage and their turns will come later than usual in the first turn. Plus, the player's party will be rewarded with a bit of Overdrive upon a successful pre-emptive strike. Be aware though, since enemies can also ambush the players too.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven allows party members to act simultaneously through a United Attack. At first, only two party members can participate but this upper limit can be increased, so that five people can attack together in a United Attack Chain. The Overdrive gauge enables United Attacks, so careful management of it can lead to looping United Attacks.

Other out-of-battle systems, such as the Smithy, acquiring new Retinue members, and an example of what one of the many Free-form Scenarios can look like have also been touched upon in this new info drop for this extensive remake of a beloved RPG.
