Soul Hackers 2 Review

A Friendlier, Simpler Apocalypse

Even though Soul Hackers 2 is a follow-up to a cult game that was released more than twenty years ago, it managed to raise interest and catch the eye of many players who have enjoyed Atlus’ latest releases. More than the fact that it is a sequel to Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, the hook is that it is a spin-off to the acclaimed Shin Megami Tensei series. Featuring demons, a cyberpunk setting, and turn-based combat, Soul Hackers 2 has obvious similarities and the same high standards as the parent series. Including most of Shin Megami Tensei’s staples, it undoubtedly welcomes newcomers to the franchise in a friendly way.

The story begins when Aion, a digital being that oversees the actions of humankind, sends two agents to protect the world from imminent destruction. Acquiring human bodies, Ringo and Figue begin their mission, discovering that an organization of Devil Summoners called the Phantom Society is behind the attempt. The inclusion of the Phantom Society is the only reference to the previous entry, so there’s no need to be aware of those events. Players take control of Ringo and recruit three Devil Summoners: Arrow, Milady, and Saizo. Aided by Figue, this newly formed party finds out that the leader of the Phantom Society, dubbed Iron Mask, is trying to gather the Covenants, which combined could give the host the power to destroy the world. The mission then becomes to find the Covenants before him. Overall, the story is engaging and well designed, including a couple of welcome twists and interesting interactions that entwine the fate of the summoners with Iron Mask and the Covenants. While the plot doesn’t deviate from the initial premise and is somewhat uncomplicated and less ambitious compared to other titles within the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei family, it makes it easier for newcomers to come on board.

[...]

Soul Hackers 2 is a great spin-off. It isn’t as long or ambitious as other Shin Megami Tensei titles, but it’s clearly made with the same quality. While the reduced number of demons and the simpler mechanics can be a negative for veterans, Soul Hackers 2 proves to be a much friendlier starting point for newcomers. Fans of the franchise will likely enjoy this installment, even if it lacks the complexity of other titles in the series.

Score: 4/5

Soul Hackers 2 - Review @ RPGFan

by Hiddenx, 11:31

RPGFan has reviewed Soul Hackers 2:

 Soul Hackers 2 Review

Time to get this out of the way because I know you are all thinking it — Soul Hackers 2 is an honorary Valkyrie Profile game. Two Valkyries, Ringo and Figue, and their einherjar (or friends as they like to call them) attempt to stop Ragnarök. This premise was already enough to get me interested in the game, but Soul Hackers 2 is also an Atlus RPG with a slick presentation style that shows off incredibly well. When the game was announced, I had a feeling that it was made for me, but does the final product live up to my excitement?

Soul Hackers 2 is an odd sell. It’s the sequel to a 1997 RPG, Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers — Devil Summoner being a subseries of the Megami Tensei franchise, which spans 35 years and many games, including all but the first Persona title. The thing to know about Soul Hackers, and why this new game boasts the title Soul Hackers 2 despite the story having nothing to do with its prequel, is the cyberpunk setting. Both games take place in the neon glow of the near future.

[...]

My opinion of Soul Hackers 2 was in constant flux during my playthrough. I never especially disliked the game, but I often flipped between enjoyment and disappointment within mere minutes. That feeling of disappointment is what remains in the end. I am not sure if Soul Hackers 2 is exciting enough to hold new fans through to the end, and it isn’t mechanically competent enough to fully grab the attention of a series veteran like myself. But there is still the visual flair, musical swagger, plethora of rad demons, and bonds of friendship you forge along the way to make it an enticing package.

Score: 73/100

Soul Hackers 2 - Review @ Digitaltrends

Digitaltrends checked out Soul Hackers 2:

Soul Hackers 2

I found my third dead body about five hours into Soul Hackers 2. After 30 hours, I’ll find out that corpses and plot twists are nothing to be surprised about.
Contents

Aion, the supercomputer version of God, foresees the end of the world. It creates Ringo and Figue, two humanoid representations of its consciousness, to stop this impending apocalypse. Unfortunately, they arrive too late to save their targets: genius scientist Ichiro Ondo and demon summoner Arrow. That’s where the game’s titular Soul Hacking comes in. Bring back the soul and apparently the body revives with it. Ringo ends up reviving three people who agree to fight together for the sake of their own goals. Who’ll really win in the end, though?

Pros

  • Innovates on SMT formula
  • Satisfying turn economy and strategy
  • Easy to recruit demons
  • Progression makes battles worthwhile

Cons

  • Story moves too fast
  • Superficial hangout interactions
  • Emotional beats fall flat
  • Forgettable sideuests

Score: 3/5 - “Soul Hackers 2 innovates when it comes to RPG gameplay, but its story is a step down compared to Atlus' recent hits.”
