Today, Ubisoft® and South Park Digital Studios announced that Bring the Crunch, downloadable content for South Park™: The Fractured But Whole™, will be available on July 31. From the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, Bring the Crunch adds a whole new story campaign and “Final Girl” superhero class to South Park: The Fractured But Whole.

In Bring the Crunch, your newest buddy, Mint-Berry Crunch, aka Bradley Biggle, aka Gok-zarah, has just arrived from his home planet of Kokujon with the tremendous power of mint and berries. Meanwhile, an idyllic summer at Lake Tardicaca turns into a nightmare when the camp counselors go missing. With the fate of summer camp in jeopardy, Fastpass sends out a Coonstagram distress signal. Team up with FastPass, Doctor Timothy, Professor Chaos and the newest member of the Coon & Friends, Mintberry Crunch, to save summer camp.

Players will also be able to embrace the new “Final Girl” class and overcome insurmountable odds to survive. This superhero class brings new combat tactics and traps to take down spooky enemies. After saving Lake Tardicaca, players will be able to bring their new powers and buddy to the rest of their superhero adventure.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole (for PC)

It isn't very often a game comes along that presents a setting and story as unapologetically risqué as South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Naturally, The Stick of Truth fans know exactly what they're getting themselves into: topical, highly satirical, and utterly absurd South Park comedy that's paired with a deep, grid-based RPG combat system. It's a refreshing RPG, if only because the gameplay, hard language, ridiculous scenarios, and show references keep you smiling until the end. Fractured slip up once in a while; the superhero-themed exploration elements utilize some highly tedious menu switching and quick time event (QTE) mechanics, and the game is surprisingly buggy. However, if you can look past these issues, you're in for an enjoyable time with this PC game.

Bottom Line: The Fractured But Whole delivers exactly what you would expect from a South Park- game: ribald humor and numerous Easter eggs. Technical issues and repetitive mini-games dull the experience, however.

A love letter to South Park fans that doesn’t disappoint

Having played the first South Park game, The Stick of Truth, sporadically over summer 2014, I had high expectations for the sequel. As an avid South Park fan, I tried to be as objective as possible, but believe me: it was no easy task, as this is truly a game built for the fans.

The premise of the sequel is essentially a spoof of modern superhero movie franchises. A key difference from the off is how this game embeds itself into an already established narrative within the show; the equally inappropriately titled ‘Coon and Friends’ plot, which has been the focus for a number of episodes already.

Regardless, these issues are not so problematic that it takes away from the game as a whole; it is a genuinely memorable game — if not simply because of how ridiculously funny it is. With multiplayer existing almost as a must-have in many games these days, it’s good to see a game still delivering on a detailed single-player experience, and one that is so different to anything else you’ll find right now. With enough run-time and replay value, it certainly warrants the purchase.

(Warning: Mild spoilers below.)

At some point in South Park: The Fractured But Whole, your character, the New Kid, will walk by a movie theater. As a member of Cartman's Coon & Friends superhero team, he'll be wearing a DIY costume of your choice. And when the ticket taker sees you, he'll quip: "Aren't superheroes kind of played out?"

As the game goes on, you learn farts that lift you to rooftops and clear lava (red Legos), as well as ones you can use in battle. And those, namely a fart that cancels an opponent's turn, defang the game's battles more than any other attack. But the farts are so nonstop they also function as a sort of ambient soundtrack to "The Fractured But Whole." It's the same wet, rumbling noise Parker and Stone once used to skewer the movies of Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider for being so interchangeable. The irony, though, is that now it's "South Park" that's fighting franchise fatigue.

TL;DR: The sequel to The Stick of Truth significantly improves upon what was a breezy battle system, but its humor takes a few steps back toward crueller, harsher satire.

Developed and published by Ubisoft, in collaboration with South Park Digital Studios, South Park: The Fractured But Whole has finally launched on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The title is the sequel to the 2014 hit, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and is based on the hit animated show, South Park.

This time around, Cartman and his friends have ditched the medieval fantasy life portrayed in The Stick of Truth and switched it out for a more modern-day superhero setting. This allows Cartman to form an elite group of superheroes dubbed “Coon and Friends.” However, after a falling-out over Cartman’s planned superhero film franchise, the group splinters into two groups, which ultimately creates a civil war between Coon and Friends and The Freedom Pals. While tension brews between the two factions, Cartman calls upon his team to assist him in the rescue of a cat named “Scrambles” in order to claim a $100 reward, which he believes will allow his superhero franchise to become more popular than the Freedom Pals’.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is an immense amount of fun to play. It not only stays true to the series, but also delivers a few new jokes that are perfectly suited to the subject matter dealt within this title. To add to the accolades, gameplay is an absolute blast to experience; however, some mechanics do feel repetitive at times. When it comes to visuals and sound, South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a beautifully designed title that is accompanied by top-tier voice acting.

While South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a blast to play, just be warned that this title is not for sensitive players or children… it is rated 18 for a reason and includes a fair amount of nudity and bad language. Apart from that, South Park: The Fractured But Whole is an excellent title as well as a great sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole provides a thoroughly enjoyable experience for fans of the TV series, allowing you to go head-to-head with characters you’ve watched for 20 years. The improved turn-by-turn combat system is in-depth and satisfying but rarely requires you to be strategic, which is a shame.

It’s also a fun experience creating and tweaking your own superhero throughout the course of the game, changing everything from the costume to combat style and more. And of course, it’s packed full of offensive, ridiculous comedy that South Park is famed with. What’s not to like?

While it’s mostly more of the same, some new mechanics on top of an already excellent base make The Fractured But Whole a must have for any South Park fan.

Only South Park would dare to name their game after an asshole, but that’s precisely what has established South Park as one of the most important television shows of all time. Never one to disappoint, Trey Parker and Matt Stone have built South Park around always touching on sociopolitical issues and current events, in the same ways Matt Groening’s Simpsons have. Both shows have been far more relevant and much more tenured than the majority of shows on television, and they’re both animated cartoons, though their appeal doesn’t reach the same audiences.

If you didn’t care for The Stick of Truth, you probably won’t like The Fractured But Whole either. The experience is mostly the same aside from some mechanical differences, but it’s still a terrific experience that South Park fans are going to continue to enjoy for quite some time. Oh, and to poke fun at the idea of their own season pass? There’s a bus line called DLC where people are seemingly waiting for stuff to do. Genius.

While 2014’s magnificent The Stick of Truth skewered Tolkien, Skyrim, and high fantasy, The Fractured But Whole is an anarchic send-up of superheroes—from comic book cliches to endless money-spinning movie franchises. You play as the mute New Kid, whose heroic deeds in the previous game are forgotten because, well, the kids are playing a different game now. Tutored by the Coon (alter ego of Eric Cartman), you begin your adventure as a lowly sidekick and must earn the right to establish your own superhero brand and Netflix series. Yet no matter how hard you work, he’ll still always refer to you simply as butthole.

The Fractured But Whole (named as a reaction to retailers refusing to stock a game with the word ‘butthole’ on the cover) is an accessible RPG with a wonderfully fun turn-based combat system. The fighting in Stick was cool but lightweight. Now it’s deeper, richer, and more strategic, with some brilliantly designed battles that require genuine tactical thinking. There are buffs, debuffs, elemental magic, and summons, as well as dramatic, superbly animated ultimate attacks. And a new grid system adds extra complexity, with chain attacks, knockbacks, and powers that force you to think about where characters are positioned on the battlefield.

Because The Fractured But Whole is so full of surprises and unexpected twists, I have to avoid talking about some of its best features and moments. It's best if you discover them yourself. But if you love South Park, this is another faithful adaption of the series. The story is the only real weak link, with the pace occasionally grinding to a halt, satire that, surprisingly, lacks bite, and a general feeling of predictability—bar a few moments that are South Park at its crass, anarchic best. You may also find everything outside of the combat a little too familiar if you played The Stick of Truth. Otherwise this is a streamlined, imaginative, and enormously entertaining game.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a Worthy, Dirty Follow-Up [Hands-on Preview]

There were multiple times while playing South Park: The Fractured But Whole where my eyes widened and I thought, “I can’t believe they went there.” It’s a feeling that’s authentically South Parkian and something The Stick of Truth nailed shockingly well back in 2014. But The Stick of Truth was more than a collection of shocking jokes and references; it was also a fun, simple RPG that intelligently utilized its license. Judging by the first few hours of its sequel, The Fractured But Whole, Ubisoft is closely adhering to the foundation the first game set along with expanding and improving upon it.

Combat is one aspect Ubisoft is improving upon. The Stick of Truth relied on a Pokémon-like, turn-based fight system that was engaging for some, but heavily criticized by most for being repetitive and overly simplistic. Associate producer Kim Weigend said they were well aware of those complaints and explored ways to make the combat more complex and strategic.

Although I only played a fraction of The Fractured But Whole, I have confidence that the whole game will be another worthy entry in the South Park universe. Not only do I want to hear more of the jokes and explore the new-and-improved town but I also want to dig deeper into the improved combat. The Fractured But Whole doesn’t have to prove that a South Park game can be good; The Stick of Truth already did that. It just has to reassure us that it can do that twice and, given how I can’t wait to go back to South Park and have myself a time, I’m convinced it’ll do just that.

The Coon is the hero South Park deserves, but it won't need him until at least April.

The latest adventure of the Coon and Friends has suffered another setback. South Park: The Fractured But Whole will now hit store shelves sometime between April 2017 and March 2018, publisher Ubisoft announced today during an earnings call.

The role-playing game, based on the foul-mouthed animated series, is a follow-up to 2014's South Park: The Stick of Truth. Originally slated for a December 6th release date, it was pushed back to the beginning of 2017. At the time, Ubisoft claimed, "The development team wants to make sure the game experience meets the high expectations of fans and the additional time will help them achieve this goal." Ubisoft didn't give an explanation for this latest delay.

As a massive South Park fan, I love The Stick of Truth. It’s one of my favourite games. We can all sit and point at the simplistic combat mechanics and limited RPG customisation, but it’s an amazing representation of why South Park is the best show on TV. The jokes are perfect, the characters spectacular and you question how on Earth some sequences were cleared (a few, of course, weren’t for Europe, but the writers still managed to make hilarity from the censorship).

With The Fractured But Whole, the team is taking on the current superhero craze, and based on my time with it, this entry will not only delight fans of the show, but also people hankering for a good turn-based RPG.

First Impressions

With the limited gaming time available in this first hands-on, it was difficult to fully scope the changes coming in The Fractured But Whole. The writing is still fantastic, as it was always going to be, while combat has been given a refresh to hopefully avoid the monotony of Stick of Truth.

Outside of combat and the new character customisation, this looks set to be more of the same, with you venturing around South Park collecting all sorts of strange items, meeting your favourite characters and enjoying an absolutely bonkers story.

If you’re a fan of the TV series, this is obviously going to be a must-buy, and now it looks like it has the potential to appeal to RPG fans too.
