SpellForce 2 - Faith in Destiny Announced

by Dhruin, 00:36

JoWood has announced Spellforce 2: Faith in Destiny. Of course, Phenomic was bought by EA some time back, so this is a different development team. Here's the PR:

Vienna, Austria, May 26th; 2009; JoWooD Productions and DreamCatcher Games announce that a sequel to the successful SpellForce saga will soon be released. SpellForce 2 – Faith in Destiny combines real time strategy with exciting role-play elements. Be part of the story, when all the loose ends tie up in a grandiose showdown between good and evil. Only you can conquer the shadows of the past and reveal the demonic conspiracy.

“Developing another game in the SpellForce saga is an exciting opportunity for us. Faith of Destiny is developed incorporating feedback from the community and feedback from those who have assisted in the development of previous Spellforce games,” says Clemens Schneidhofer, PR Coordinator at JoWooD Productions. “I’d like to add that we bow before the loyal fans of the brand and want to thank all of them for their amazing support.”

“SpellForce 2 – Faith in Destiny will continue the successful Spellforce brand” adds David Skreiner, Associate Producer at JoWooD. “With its brand new multiplayer features and the countless detail improvements, SpellForce will, once more, set new revolutionary impulses to the genre."

Spellforce Universe - Review @ Strategy Informer

by Dhruin, 00:50

Spellforce Universe is a collection of Spellforce: The Order of Dawn, Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars and Dragon Storm. Strategy Informer has kicked up a review of the bundle and the score is 8/10:

SpellForce’s RPG side is no Diablo II, and the RTS side is no WarCraft III, but together, they do quite well. It has a clever way of handling each game’s concepts; for example, the research for the RTS side of the game is handled through finding specific bits of loot in the RPG side. It’s not all rosy, though, as SpellForce’s effectiveness in both the RPG and RTS sides is hampered by a clunky interface, which often makes it difficult to determine which characters on-screen are yours. The maps are also very linear, with each area featuring only one pre-determined, and often long-winded path. Neither of the add-on packs fix these shortcomings, simply offering more of the same enjoyable, yet slightly flawed gameplay.

SpellForce 2 - Review @ ComputerGames.ro

by Dhruin, 20:42

Spellforce 2 has been reviewed at ComputerGames.ro, where the score is 85%:

At the first contact with the game you will notice its RPG features. Just like in the first Spellforce, before you can start the single-player campaign you’ll have to create a character (avatar) that will see your adventures through to the end of the game. There aren’t many customization options at first, having the possibility to chose the sex, one of some predefined faces and the name of your avatar. One thing to note is that the avatar belongs to the Shaikan, a race that shares their blood with that of a dragon, which makes them very powerful and almost immortal. When a Shaikan dies, he or she can be resurrected by another Shaikan hero with the help of a special ritual, but that can be done in a limited amount of time after his or her death. When one of your heroes dies, he can also be resurrected at an “altar of life” which will cost you some lenya.

Spellforce 2: Review @ Gameplanet

by Dhruin, 23:50
NZ site Gameplanet has posted a review of Spellforce 2 with a score of 4/5:
Spellforce: The Order of Dawn was predominantly an RTS game with RPG elements. Spellforce 2 however, leans a lot more towards the RPG theme which we were very happy to see. The thing about playing an RPG game that blends genres is that at times, you feel the pace of the game changes a little too much to enjoy it. In the single player game, we found that playing your character through the RPG storyline and dialogue worked really well and synched with the RTS elements perfectly. But the pace of the game alters as soon as you stop to engage in the RTS aspect of the game. We thought this seriously detracted from the engaging storyline.

Spellforce 2: Review @ GamersInfo

by Dhruin, 22:51
A fairly positive review of Spellforce 2 is online at GamersInfo:
Even though Ia "!ve only recently jumped into the world of RTS, the combination of RTS and RPG in Spellforce 2 is fun and different, bringing two genres together in a great package. There is nothing too outstanding when it comes to the RTS portion of the game, but it does change it up a little when you get too tired of hack and slash. For anyone who is already familiar with RTS games, then Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars shouldna "!t be difficult at all. There is a good balance of fighting and questing to keep you entertained, and plenty of options for you to explore either on your own or with a friend.

RPGDot Feature: SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars - Review

by Dhruin, 12:48
After more than 100 hours with SpellForce 2, Gorath has the verdict in our review. Here's a snip:
:SpellForce 2 is a fifty-fifty mix of action-RPG and RTS. You explore 20 large islands with your party, battle enemies, solve quests and collect loot. Sooner or later you'll run into a situation requiring more firepower and then you'll ramp up a base and build an army with your party and a faction-dependent titan -- the most powerful units. The ultimate goal of every map is to access the gate to the next map. Spread all over the maps are teleporters; the avatar can travel between them, even across islands, which is quite helpful when doing sub-quests.

Spellforce 2: Review @ AtomicGamer

by Dhruin, 00:06
Spellforce 2 has been reviewed at AtomicGamer. The score is 79% and here's a bit on the two modes:
In RPG mode, youa "!ll play the game just like you would most Action-RPGs. Target your enemy, either right click them or click the sword under their portrait, and boom, youa "!ll attack. You have some special abilities that you can use, too a melee attacks, spells and such are RPG staples and make their appearance here. You can set them to one of many hotkey buttons and hit a number key to activate them. Therea "!ll even be a skill tree you can move through as you gain experience from completing side quests and beating up monsters. Spellforce 2 will be very familiar to most anyone that has played a recent RPG.

The RTS side of things is very easy to pick up on, too. If you have played any sort of strategy game in recent memory, particularly Warcraft III (which the RTS portion feels similar to), youa "!ll have no issues with playing the strategy portion of each mission. You have your hero units (which were the same heroes you controlled in the RPG portion of the mission), your builders and then military units of varying power. The options in this mode, though, also do leave something to be desired. Unit AI doesna "!t seem to be too great here, for example. Also, the lack of any ability to put my units in formations can hurt.

Spellforce 2 Review @ GamesFirst

by Garrett, 22:36
GamesFirst has posted a review of Spellforce 2 - Shadow Wars. The RPG-Strategy hybrid receives a 4/5 rating:
I would readily recommend Shadow Wars to anyone out there. This hybrid of two different genres was engaging and a twist that sets SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars apart from the majority of RTS or role-playing games out there. The vastness of the world is both welcoming and overwhelming at times, but it adds much to the playability and length of SpellForce 2.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Game Chronicles

by Kalia, 19:44
Game Chronicles shot up their review of Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars today. The score comes in at a very nice 8.8/10.00 and the article says:
Last but not least, throw in wide range of skirmish modes for both single and multiplayer, although the latter may be a little hard to find, as this game doesna "!t strike at many to be an online foray. Best just to find local groups of players via forums or even in your own circle of buddies. To summarize: a ton of value here, months and months worth, and no word on expansions either, but I wouldna "!t rule any out.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Gamespy

by Kalia, 00:58
Gamespy has cranked out the latest review of Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars. Rating it "Great: 4/5 stars", the editors say:
There is a lot of content in SpellForce 2. Not only do you get a lengthy campaign, but there's also a free mode which serves as a second mini-campaign, even though there's no storyline (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). You get around 30 maps and several new quests. Better still, you can play these maps via co-op mode with up to two buddies, which is an absolute blast and by far the best way to play in free mode. There's still more meat on the bone, though. Also included in the package is skirmish mode for both single player and multiplayer. Multiplayer matchmaking is a bit problematic (for North Americans, anyway) because the vast majority of people in the lobby don't speak English. Apparently, SpellForce 2 is much more popular in Germany.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Byte Press

by Kalia, 16:19
Byte Press is the latest in a string of sites posting their reviews of Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars.
Like I said, Spellforce 2 features more than better graphics. One of its other feature is the "Clicka "!n'Fight" and Quick-Action-Buttons, which allow the player to take instant action in any battle to tip the scales in his favour. Now, the player can customize the skills of the other heroes from his gang, unlike in Spellforce: Order of Dawn where the player could only summon predefined rune warriors using runes.

In Spellforce 2, the great factions that existed in Spellforce 1 have been altered. Now, these form three big alliances, The Realm, The Clans and The Pact. Each of these are consisted of three races, humans, elves and dwarfs form The Realm, orcs, barbarians and trolls form The Clan and the dark elves, gargoyles and the shadows form The Pact.

here.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ The Entertainment Depot

by Kalia, 19:25
Another review of Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars has shown up at The Gaming Depot. Giving the game 7/10, the reviewer said:
Really, not much has changed since The Order of Dawn. The graphics are better, there are voice-overs, and the music is about the same, which isna "!t a bad thing. On the other hand, the real-time strategy portions are still rudimentary, therea "!s still a lot of running around, the difficulty still can get ridiculous, and the role-playing element is the strongest portion. Much like the original, ita "!s a competent title that provides a lengthy, enjoyable experience. They didna "!t mess anything up, but all the same ita "!s a shame that ita "!s not better; they had a great head start.
Read it here.

Spellforce 2: Review @ Gaming Illustrated

by Dhruin, 08:15
Gaming Illustrated is the latest site to review Phenomic's Spellforce 2. The score is 8.8/10 and here's a sample:
To blend both RTS & RPG games together in one title is a very ambitious task that Spellforce 2 actually pulled off pretty well. Playing the single player campaign, you create an Avatar that serves as the central character through the game, and pick up heroes, whom you can mold and shape. Pick up weapons, level up, and add skills in a robust skill tree (tons of them!) just like your favorite RPG game, such as Dungeon Siege. Experience points are picked up from killing boss monsters, or finishing secondary or primary quests. From there, you can control armies and bases just like an RTS title such as WarCraft III, building up particular structures, creating units, and conquering the map against the enemy. The missions are lengthy and the first player campaign will keep gamers entertained for 40 hours minimum.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Games Radar

by Kalia, 15:59
Games Radar has their review of Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars available for your viewing pleasure. Handing Spellforce a 9/10 rating, this is what they're saying:
Sadly, SpellForce 2 will probably suffer the fate of other misunderstood greats: gamers who played the cruder (but promising) Spellforce may be understandably wary, and anyone tired of Diablo-cum-Dungeon Siege will probably view it as "sequel shovelware." But try it and see for yourself. For just forty bucks, you're getting the gaming equivalent of a giganto-Whatchamacallit bar.

Spellforce 2: Review @ Worthplaying

by Dhruin, 08:09
Looks like it's Spellforce 2 day with another review popping up. This time it's Worthplaying and they have awarded a massive 9.5/10:
You begin play with a single avatar that you steadily improve a complete quests for experience points that level you onwards to greater power and abilities, collect items like rings and weapons and armour for increased aesthetic glory, and amass your personal wealth. As the game progresses, you'll collect up to seven other individual heroes that will always sit just under your main character in power, but you can tweak them in all the same ways. This isn't a million miles from Dungeon Siege; however, gameplay never devolves into merely tapping a key for health potions, and as such, SpellForce 2 comes across as more dynamic than Microsoft's squad-RPG. Underneath all of this are the strategic aspects: resource management, base-building, tech-tree advancement, and large troop tactics.

Spellforce 2: Review @ Fragland

by Dhruin, 07:40
Spellforce 2 hits its average with a score of 82.2% at Fragland, despite some criticisms:
The story is boring, it doesn't appeal to me and I sometimes couldn't follow it, mainly because of the references to the first Spellforce. In this campaign the loading times are also too long, luckily this isn't the case in the other game modes. The quests do make playing fun because of their variation.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Out of Eight

by Kalia, 15:37
Out of Eight, in contrast to Gaming Excellence, has a slightly more positive review of Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars, giving it a score of 7/8.
A lot of games that try to infuse other genres in them do so superficially: adding experience points to a first person shooter, or base building to an adventure game. SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars shows that you can take equal proportions of two genres and combine them effectively, producing a fun game thata "!s an original product. The game is at its best when you have RTS base building and tactical command with RPG quests, loot, and experience taking place in the same level. This is common during the campaign and seen to a lesser extent in the free games. The RTS or RPG parts of the game on their own would not have been as good, but SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars is a game thata "!s greater than the sum of its parts. Add to this outstanding graphics and numerous MMO-like multiplayer options, and you have a very complete package that should appeal to most gamers. Ita "!s unfortunate, then, that SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars is not called a SThe Lord of the Rings,a ? because then it would sell the number of copies it should. Still, SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars is a great title that brings two apparently disparate genres together in a complete presentation.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Gaming Excellence

by Kalia, 15:35
ameplay established by the first game and seeks to add more to the story and gameplay. Like peanut butter and chocolate (or jelly, if thata "!s your thing,) one would think that the two genres would go very well together. Well, they do, on paper. The game strives to put the two together for a good experience, and is met with mixed results.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Wrap Report @ RPG Vault

by Kalia, 21:38
Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars, now released, is the feature in RPG Vault's wrap report this week. "Project Manager Martin Loehlein on Phenomic's well-received sequel fusing the RPG and real-time strategy genres."
We want RPG players to like this game because it is a fully-fledged RPG where you own whole countries and command whole armies. You all know these RPGs where you end up having godlike powers, but somehow all you own is what you can carry? Where you hear of whole armies roaming the land, but somehow it is always just you and your buddies fighting a handful of monsters? Well, in SpellForce 2, you can go to battle with a real army and you even get your own realm to protect and develop.

Spellforce 2: Review @ PC.IGN

by Dhruin, 07:44
"Mostly positive" is the verdict at IGN on the changes introduced by Phenomic in Spellforce 2. The score is 8.4/10 and here's an excerpt:
SpellForce 2 is, in general, an entertaining game that I found a worthwhile experience. It offers a pretty complete combination of two different genres. The problem is (as I've been told by several developers in the past) creating a pure mix of genres as different as RTS and RPG can be incredibly difficult. The challenge isn't just making a good game, it's making two good games and integrating them seamlessly. SpellForce 2 actually does a very admirable job of it as well. It's a better game than its predecessor, simplifying bits where they needed to be, but it still suffers from some hybrid inadequacies.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Gamerz Edge

by Kalia, 20:19
Gamerz-Edge has also weighed in today on Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars. With a score of 8.9/10, they seem very pleased overall:
Successfully combining two different genres into one game is a steep challenge for any developer. Wea "!ve seen plenty of games that tried to combine elements of various genres only to come up with a game that felt superficial and incomplete on any front. Spellforce 2 Shadow Wars does a great job of combining RPG and RTS elements into a competent, deep, enjoyable experience that fans of RTS and RPG games should definitely check out.
Find the rest here.

Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars Review @ Gamer's Temple

by Kalia, 19:36
Gamer's Temple gives Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars 85% in their recent review. The review is fairly short with no accompanying screens and the editor interestingly says that this game is likely to satisfy action-RGP fans. Additionally, he has this to say:
SpellForce 2 would be easy to recommend based solely on its campaign play, but the skirmish mode adds its own excitement to the game and will provide for some fun gameplay after youa "!ve made your way through the campaign. In this mode the game plays like a more traditional RTS game with emphasis on resource gathering, base-building, and army raising. SpellForce 2 departs from the standard RTS model in that you create your hero before entering skirmish mode and this hero will grow in experience and abilities as you play your way through the skirmish battles. Each map has a recommended hero level associated with it and this guide should be adhered to as an underpowered hero can easily find himself slain by the first sword blow the first time the enemy is encountered.
Find it here.
