Star Ocean: The Divine Force - Review

by Hiddenx, 15:45

Niche Gamer has reviewed the J-RPG Star Ocean: The Divine Force:

Star Ocean: The Divine Force Review

To preface this Star Ocean: The Divine Force review with some disclosure; your humble author has a love-hate relationship with the franchise. The first three games are classic RPGs, but when it came time to move onto the seventh gen on HD consoles, Star Ocean struggled to maintain relevancy.

Star Ocean was always a mid-tier RPG series and when Square Enix acquired tri-Ace, there was an effort to make it bigger than it was. Star Ocean: The Last Hope alienated everyone with its insufferable cast and sloppy storytelling. It looked amazing, but God help anyone who tried to endure the voice acting and melodramatic schmaltz.

Integrity and Faithlessness further damaged Star Ocean‘s image with its corner cutting, shockingly small world, and worse story. Most fans can’t agree which one is worse, but maybe the latest entry can make them forget that last decade and remember what it is about these games they love? Is this 25th anniversary a eulogy or a victory? Find out in our Star Ocean: The Divine Force review!

This is a review coupled with a supplemental video review. You can watch the video review or read the full review of the below:

[...]

Star Ocean: The Divine Force is not a perfect action-RPG, but it does have a lot going for it that make it extremely enjoyable. It has top notch production values for the most part and it more than makes up for the utterly disappointing Integrity and Faithlessness. The the balance of awesome visuals, exciting combat and addictive exploration mark this entry as a series high point.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force Review

Forty-five hours, a few laughs, and a few frowns later, we shrugged off Star Ocean: The Divine Force. It’s a middle-tier Japanese RPG that never threatens to rise to the top or fall so far that it’s crammed between Hyperdimension Neptunia and Unlimited Saga. Failure to even crack the top half. The most opulent building in the JRPG genre.

Considering the series’ troubled past, The Divine Force’s middling quality is likely an improvement. Some of the changes and systems implemented here make it possible that the next Star Ocean game may be genuinely good, even if this game wouldn’t make our best of 2022 list unless we’re doing 100 games each this year. It’s possible it’ll turn out to be really good.

Conclusion

Like a cozy pair of JRPG slippers, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is easy to sink into. In case you’re craving a Japanese RPG but have already exhausted the good options, this one should satisfy your cravings. That’s fine. It’s the kind of food that makes you feel better. You know how it is to be watching Criminal Minds when you really want to be watching Mindhunter and you can only watch one episode because Netflix hasn’t renewed Mindhunter yet? That. It’s a cosmic first.

Pro:

  • Combat is fun, fast, and flexible
  • Some banging music
  • Ticks all of the traditional JRPG boxes

Cons:

  • Rough animations
  • Occasional slowdown in parts
  • Story takes ages to get going
  • Look at Raymond’s hair
  • LOOK AT IT

Star Ocean: The Divine Force Review – The Universe Still Has Some Good Stories Left to Tell

The history of the Star Ocean series is an interesting one, to say the least. The first entry in the series, released back in 1996 on Nintendo's Super Famicom system in Japan, was the first game developed by tri-Ace as an answer to Namco's Tales of Phantasia, which members of tri-Ace worked on as part of Wolf Team. And in many ways, the original Star Ocean surpassed the first entry in the Tales series by offering a more dynamic story whose final outcome was partially influenced by the choices players made during Private Actions, special optional events that allowed players to learn more about characters and deepen their bonds with protagonist Roddick.

Even with some issues here and there, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is undoubtedly a return to form for the series by tri-Ace. The game delivers a solid JRPG experience that both fans of the series and newcomers will enjoy thanks to the best battle system in the series to date, likable characters, and an engaging but a little slow and not particularly surprising story. Some technical issues and by-the-books game design do take something away from the experience, but for those looking for a traditional Japanese role-playing game with plenty of heart, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is the game to get.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force - New Clip

by Redglyph, 10:05

ScreenRant reports a new clip showing the environment of Star Ocean: The Divine Force. The game should be released in 2022 for PC, PS4/5, Xbox One/Series X.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force Environment Video Shows Giant Sci-Fi City

A new Star Ocean: The Divine Force clip shows off a few of the upcoming game’s many detailed environments, including a massive futuristic city. Square Enix and developer Tri-Ace revealed a new installment of the long-running sci-fi JRPG franchise with an action-packed Star Ocean: The Divine Force trailer during the October PlayStation Showcase livestream last week.

Not much is known yet about Star Ocean: The Divine Force’s plot, but last week’s trailer depicts the crew of a ship named “the Ydas” as they are stranded on the planet Aster IV and get caught up in an ongoing war between two native kingdoms. As usual with the Star Ocean franchise, The Divine Force will be centered around two primary heroes: Raymond, a starship captain who wields a giant sword into battle, and Laeticia, a “princess knight” looking to defend the medieval Kingdom of Aucerius from the invading Vey’l Empire. Square Enix has promised that Star Ocean: The Divine Force will have the “fastest and strongest action” of any Star Ocean title, and players will be able to move freely in a three-dimensional environment. This is somewhat similar to the recently released Tales of Arise, which has been reviewed favorably.
