KotOR 2 - True Neutrality, Kreia

by Hiddenx, 21:09

TechRaptor's Robert Grosso talks about the KotOR 2 character Kreia:

Character Select - True Neutrality, Kreia

[...]
Kreia as a character is rather difficult to understand, because for the entire game she represents several different points of view that are emblematic to the Star Wars brand while simultaneously deconstructing the core themes of the franchise. At first, she seems to be a philosopher and mentor to her student, the self-named Jedi Exile that the player creates. She is also a great manipulator, using her powers to slyly coerce other characters, including the Exile, to fulfill her personal goals. Both aspects follow standard Star Wars tropes—the wizened mentor and power-hungry dictator, contrasting each other into one character and representing both the light and dark side of the force vividly for the player. It is the final bit of her character that is most interesting, however, and that is her dedication to true neutrality. In the very poignant twist in the game, Kreia is both a Jedi and a Sith, both light and dark, and an enemy to what she blames as the source for all suffering in the galaxy: the Force itself.
[...]
Kreia is ultimately unique: a mentor and manipulator, a constant companion yet cunning adversary throughout your adventures with the Exile. She is complex in her emotions but simple in her motivations; she is adamant to her convictions and never waivers from her ultimate goals. She is both villain and hero, and neither at the same time—a true neutral character with unclear intentions from the get-go. Using a philosophical stance of true neutrality to question the very notions of what is truly light or dark make Kreia in all of her incarnations a memorable figure in the Star Wars universe.

Thanks Farflame!

KotOR 2 - The Mod Awakens

by Aubrielle, 04:45

Gamepressure tells the story about how a modder helped to recreate the content of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and reinvigorate the game.

The developers realized that the game will need to be seriously cut, but they didn’t have much of a choice. However, what did not end up in the game, was not lost forever… not long after the release, it became clear that the game contains lots of code fragments and assets that refer to – theoretically – non-existent areas, characters or quests. Today, 10 years after the release date, KotOR II is still alive, and it’s mainly because of those “deleted” fragments, that the community of fans was able to retrieve. The most famous modification, The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod, put the game back on its tracks and gave it a form that the creators wanted it to have in the first place. It’s not possible to count how many changes were made in the original, but because of those changes the game is currently in a fantastic condition. We need to be thankful to a small group of people, without whom there would be no point in talking about KotOR II; now, some people even say that the sequel is as good as the original game.

More information.

KotOR 2 - Confirmed For Mobile

by Hexprone, 21:44

Sorry guys, I'm posting about a phone game. But, it's from Obsidian though! Touch Arcade reveals:

It looks like we're getting a mobile port of the second Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game. Aspyr Media got an ESRB rating for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, which mentions Linux, Macintosh, and mobile. Aspyr published the first KOTOR for mobile and Mac, now it looks like they're bringing the sequel to mobile as well – or at least are prepared to do so. KOTOR 2 never came out for Mac, and since KOTOR 1 has seemingly done well enough on iOS, it's not a surprise to see KOTOR 2 coming to iOS.

KotOR 2 - Let's Play Video @ Continue-Play

by Couchpotato, 05:36

Kyle Barrows of Continue-Play posted a new Lets Play video for KotOR 2.

With all the hoopla over everything Star Wars, I thought it time that I be given control of the galaxy and dusted off a copy of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 in hopes of spreading my dark influence across worlds. What I didn’t expect was to befriend a plucky droid armed with a flamethrower, and gumption only to have him ripped away from me.

KotOR 2 - Destroyed the Star Wars Universe?

by Couchpotato, 04:00

Jake Muncy of Kill Screen published an interesting article where he talks about how Knights of the Old Republic II attempted to destroy the Star Wars universe.

My friend from college took a class on postcolonial fiction once, and she zealously tried to get me to read all her course materials. They were stories, she told me, about being inside and outside at the same time, and they reflected her experience as a foreign-raised American back to her. I never did. She never watched Star Wars, either, though I don’t blame her for that one. There’s a cultural gulf there we’ve never quite been able to bridge, and Star Wars isn’t a story that has an answer for that sort of gulf. Its interests are a bit too simplistic, its heroics a bit too plain, too caught up in establishment and the idea of an unbroken community.

That’s why the Jedi Exile’s story strikes me as an important one. Knights of the Old Republic II guts the mythology of Star Wars and puts it toward more transgressive purposes, revealing the vanishing points where the black and white categories it espouses start to dissolve, using the figure of homo sacer to show the way they lose their usefulness in the face of the Other. There are realities that can never be captured by our big cultural myths, and for a moment, this strange game from a decade ago shows that, revealed within the fabric of one of those very myths, as clear as the Exile in front of me.

KotOR 2 - Retrospective @ OXM

by Couchpotato, 06:23

OXM posted a new retrospective article for Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords.

Let's be blunt. KOTOR 2 is an unfinished game. By the time you reach Malachor V, everything is petering out. The signs were there from the start: cut content, loot randomly generated rather than placed by hand and oh so many bugs. The ending violates the "show, don't tell" rule so hard you can almost hear the money running out.

The popular belief is that Obsidian were pressured to put the game out in time for Christmas, but we're talking about a game with two gender-exclusive companions, a fully implemented crafting system and a card-playing mini-game. If they'd had an extension, would they have finished what they started, or added a fully featured NPC shaving simulator?

In many ways, KOTOR 2 feels like the end of an old era of RPGs. It was the first console game by a group of veteran PC developers, and it shows. Combat is flashy animation played over behind-the-scenes dice rolling. Literally in this case - KOTOR 2 was one of the last major RPGs to be based on a pen-and-paper game (Star Wars d20), a holdover from a time when video games followed, rather than led, the RPG market.

KOTOR 2 was made in that moment, forever frozen between Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect. That's its thing, to be caught between worlds. It's too sophisticated for a proper Star Wars game, too flashy for the old-school RPGs, too wedded to dice for the new, and too broken to be great, but just broken enough to be unique.

Just so you all know I hate the article, and OXM Staff writer funding was indeed cut short due to LucasArts. Watch the Matt Barton interview with Feargus Urquhart for why.

KotOR 2 - Retrospective @ TechRaptor

by Couchpotato, 02:31

TechRaptor takes a look back at Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords in a new
short retrospective article
they posted a few days back.

Obsidian are one of the most interesting developers, they are consistently brilliant and consistently flawed, time after time exhibiting the same strengths and weaknesses. Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords is possibly the most Obsidian game ever made. It is, in fact, the platonic form of Obsidian games (don’t get the reference? Go dig out a philosophy text book).

What does this all mean? Well, let’s start with what Obsidian are good at – because they are a really talented studio (and one that I have a lot of love for). They are brilliant at building upon ideas, taking known things and putting their own spin on them. They excel at playing in the playgrounds of others, which is why a sequel to KOTOR was the perfect fit.

This isn’t just a positive though, there is a flip side. Obsidian have shown time and time again that they have some problems building things from scratch. That’s just not where their main skill set lies, what they are good at is implementing interesting systems and filling up games with masses of amazing writing. Their latest game – South Park: The Stick of Truth – may seem to be a counterpoint to them having problems building things from scratch, it is actually somewhat emblematic.

KotOR 2 - Retrospective Interview @ EuroGamer

by Couchpotato, 00:44

Eurogamer has a retrospective style interview with Chris Avellone about KOTOR2 and what KOTOR 3 might have been.

Also I guess I should say this,"Please note that there are spoilers about Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 in this article." Now on with the newsbit.

To this day one decision still plagues Chris Avellone's mind: should Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords have had more Revan in it? BioWare and LucasArts hadn't forbidden it - instead, Obsidian had decided to focus on new characters to allow more creative breathing room.

"But I don't know if that was the best decision," Avellone ponders, speaking in a Eurogamer KOTOR2 podcast other members of Obsidian and The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod join us for. You can listen to it in full right now, jokes 'n all.

"There's a lot of design decisions that occurred in Knights of the Old Republic 2 that, to this day, I still question whether that was the right thing to do or not, and one was, ideally we should have maybe looked for more ways to introduce Revan in the sequel.

"But then again," he adds, "when we were plotting out the idea of doing the third game we just thought it would be cool if we were foreshadowing what Revan was really doing in Knights of the Old Republic 1, and what he was preparing for in Knights of the Old Republic 2, and then bring it to a close, the end of the trilogy, but we didn't get a chance to do that."

Yes, a Knights of the Old Republic 3 game existed in pre-production at Obsidian Entertainment.

"I always liked the idea that Revan, as smart and powerful as your player-character was, was actually even more of a brilliant strategist than became apparent in the first game," Avellone goes on.

KotOR 2 - How to restore it @ RPS

by Dhruin, 23:25

We've posted on the two major KotOR 2 restoration projects over the years but if you never got around to trying it, Rock, Paper, Shotgun's The Fixer column has a detailed article including widescreen support and other fixes:

The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod (TSLRCM)

The TSLRCM is a hugely substantial mod that helps the game meet the vision that Obsidian had originally planned for the game. Not only does the mod fix a whole host of bugs, including broken items, dialogue tree errors and combat glitches, it has pulled content out of the code and made entire areas of the game playable including unusued audio files and dialogue trees. The most recent build has also introduced compatibility with the long-awaited M4-78 Enhancement Project, aka Droid Planet.
To install TSLRCM:

1) Download and install the mod from the official ModDB entry, now at version 1.18.2.

2) Make sure to install the mod at the correct Steam location, where the default location is here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Knights of the Old Republic II\ (unlike other KOTOR2 mods which fit into the \Overide\ folder).

3) Ensure that the Steam doesn’t accidentally overwrite the mod by disabling updates to the game (Right click on KOTOR2 in the library > Properties > Updates tab > Do not automatically update this game).

4) Mod installation is confirmed if the main menu of the game shows The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod 1.8.1.

The Sith Lords Restored Content mod for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 is done with this latest release, reports RPS. From their MODDB page:

Version 1.8 of the Sith Lords Restoration Content Mod, featuring a LOT of fixes, and some additional, compared to 1.7, and especially compared to vanilla TSL. This mod should hopefully give you the full experience Obsidian intended to give the player when working on KOTOR2.

KotOR 2 - Video Game Villains

by Aries100, 18:24

An editorial at EuroGamer titled 'Born Under a Bad Sign' discusses video game villains.
The author mentions that a video game villain should have these traits:

A proper videogame villain, as in literature, theatre and film, needs to be a consistent, compelling, and at least vaguely sympathetic entity; they arguably have to be the most fascinating character in any given story, because it is through their actions that the hero's journey is necessitated. And in videogames, designers have to go a step further: the villain's relationship with the player should ideally be interactive and dynamic.

He also mentions how Ultima IV and V tried to do this while he thinks the main villain in SW: KOTOR 2 is the best one ever created.

Do you agree with the author about his points above? And do you agree that the main villain in KOTOR2 is the best one created yet ?

KotOR 2 - Chris Avellone Forum Q&A

by Dhruin, 23:33

Chris Avellone has posted his answers to a series of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 questions from Obsidian forumite, Joakim.  Here's a sample:

1. K2 pretty much changed on how the force, the galaxy, the Jedi are portrayed. How did that work in terms that you were making a sequel to a very typical Star Wars game? (KotOR1, we have this evil dude who wants to blow up the galaxy just for the hell of it).

A lot of it came from deep-rooted feelings and opinions about the Star Wars franchise, both positive and negative, and especially what it would feel like to be a Jedi or Sith in that universe. I've always had an issue with the Force because of its predestination aspects, and I wonder if any Jedi or Sith would ever want to rebel against it entirely... and if they'd be willing to give up their ties of the Force (and all that power) to do it. Nihilus in K2 is a being who's wholly surrendered himself to what the Force is, and the fact he's completely consumed by the self-destructive Sith technique sums up my problems with the Force.

Don't get me wrong, though, I found a lot to enjoy in the Star Wars universe, much like the other franchises I've worked with. I do like to go into a campaign setting though and poke at the foundations a bit.

KotOR 2 - Restored Content Mod v1.4 Public Beta

by Dhruin, 13:23

No, not Team Gizka's project but an alternative while Team Gizka is in some sort of strange limbo after all but one contributor left the project, as I understand it.  A couple of the other developers reformed for the TSL Restored Content Mod, which is now available as a public beta.

Read this thread for the files and installation details and the FAQ is worth a visit.  Here's a snip:

TSL Restored Content Modification FAQ

Q: What is this?
A: This is a mod for TSL that restores almost all of the cut content of TSL.

Q: Is this a theft of Team Gizka's work?
A: Not in the slightest. All of this mod, minus the Rebuilt Enclave by jinger (who gave permission for it to be used in this mod), was done by Stoney and Zbyl2 and SWfan28.

Q: How can you prove that?
A: Have a look at the scripts.

Q: How come you got it done so quickly then?
A: We already had Zbyl's previous content and Jinger's mod plus SWfan28 had some stuff he gave us which had been done. As well as the Dantooine Restoration we did previously

Q:Will the original M478mod be compatible with it?
A:As it is now no it is not compatible. It will either need to be patched or wait for M478EP.

Q: What does this mod restore?
A: We tend to look at as "what does the mod NOT restore?", so here's a list of what was not included:
M4-78 - The Droid Planet is still a part of Stoney's M4-78RP and M4-78EP. The M4-78EP will be compatible with the TSLRCM.

"Darth Atris" - There was too little material left to properly restore this aspect of the ending.

GenoHaradan - Again, too little content left. However, Lord of Hunger is currently designing a storyline for a heavily expanded version of the GenoHaradan Side Quest. It will be released as a fully compatible patch.

Nihilus vs. Sion - Essentially part of the GenoHaradan Side Quest and will be part of Lord of Hunger's storyline.

Sell Vrook into Slavery - Again, too little content. Also conflicts with the storyline.

Dustil Onasi - No content to work with, or a reason to restore.

Ravager Crashing Into Telos - Does not fit the storyline as it would most likely result in the destruction of Ebon Hawk, thereby conflicting with later events.

Thanks, Prime Junta!

KotOR 2 - Restoration Project Progress

by Dhruin, 22:11

Team Gizka has announced they will make the v1.0b1 version of their Star Wars: KotOR2 Restoration Projection available this weekend to closed beta testers - the last step before the 1.0c1 public release.  Obviously it has been a difficult ride, because the scope has changed a little:

Some things of note:

This weekend will see the release of 1.0b1. It has been a long time coming. Especially given the amount of complaining some of you are wont to do :P

Those of you on the closed beta list: I will contact you when it is available (presumably late Friday or Saturday morning EDT) along with details about how to go about getting it.

Not ALL of the content on our list is restored. "But you said you'd restore all of the content on your list before 1.0b1!!!1!1!" Plans change. Surprisingly, what works well in war, works well in modding: never reveal your plan. We'll learn that lesson eventually. We think. The content that's left isn't OMG NEW CONTENT kind of content. It's stuff we could add in a patch if we waited that long (though some of it we don't even want to think about right now :twitch: ) That said some of it will probably make it in before 1.0c1.

"But what about the bugs?!?!?!?!1?/!/" As has been repeatedly said: 1.0c1 is the version that will have that low low bug count (maybe not 0 but we'll see.)

For those of you now thinking "I knew they'd go back on their promise! I knew we'd get some crap mod! They're not restoring all the content and they're not fixing all the bugs!": you're still getting a mod. With very few bugs. Mantis can attest to that (as can our fingers after three years of typing.) I've asked the closed beta testers to write their impressions, good, bad, or other and post them. Hopefully most will be good, but, secretly (or not so much anymore), we're also hoping for a couple bad just so people can see this isn't about pleasing everyone. We've not done this for three years in some vain attempt to make everyone, or in fact, anyone, happy. Nor are we doing this for some weird ego-fueled trip into (fleeting, flaming internet) fame. We're doing this because we've enjoyed and enjoy doing it. That and we'd kinda like to see this thing finished. It's a modder thing...

Thanks, Avantenor!

KotOR 2 - Restoration Project Update

by Dhruin, 09:31

It looks like Team Gizka's Knights of the Old Republic II Restoration Project is content complete.  The site has an overview of their upcoming milestones, with the current 0.7b3 going past 0.7b1 - "All content implemented. All Block, Crash and Major severity issues resolved".

There's still a long way to go according to their forums but this should be worth watching for KotOR2 fans.  Thanks to a post at Octopus Overlords for the reminder on this one.

Star Wars: KotOR 2 - Review @ Gamers Info

by Kalia, 16:02
In a strangely belated but interesting review, Gamer's Info has posted a review of Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. The review is very positive and says: <blockquote><em>All things considered, I recommend this game to anyone who loves RPGs and Star Wars. If youa "!ve played the first one, just be prepared to see the exact same textures and models and sadly several of the same locations. If you can look past those flaws, the game is quite an enjoyable diversion for a few weeks (or days if you play like me).</em></blockquote>Read the rest <a href="http://www.gamersinfo.net/index.php?art/id:1143" target="_blank">here</a>.

Star Wars: KotOR 2 - Review @ GamersInfo

by Dhruin, 07:18
After failing to finish the first time, GamersInfo goes back to try Knights of the Old Republic II a second time:<blockquote><em>The first time I tried to play KotoR 2 (Knights of the Old Republic 2) I was a little disappointed. Obsidiana "!s original game of the year hit (KotoR 1) was one of the best Star Wars games ever made, not to mention one of the best designed RPGs in a crowded marketplace. When I loaded up the game and saw the exact same textures and nearly identical models from the original, I felt like I was playing KotoR 1 all over again. It got even worse when the story began to unfold. The storylines in both games are so similar youa "!ll find yourself having déjà vu.</em></blockquote>That would be BioWare, actually. <a href="http://www.gamersinfo.net/index.php?art/id:1143" target="_blank">More...</a>
