Stories: The Path of Destinies

It's not always about the journey, sometimes it's all about the ending.

Playing out like an interactive bedtime story, Stories: The Path of Destinies places you firmly in control of its unfolding narrative, throwing a number of pivotal decisions at you along the way.  Dripping with charm from every pore, Stories showcases a beautifully vibrant art-direction and a witty narrator who is ever present to spout constant one-liners.

[...]

You'll find it pretty difficult to close the book on this fast-paced RPG adventure. Its story after multiple playthroughs may feel a little tedious and encounters may lack challenge, but its charmingly addictive gameplay will see you returning again and again to the gorgeous world of Boreas in an effort to unlock all of the available endings.

Score: 7/10

Stories: The Path of Destinies Review

Upon hearing the title: Story: The Path of Destinies, many gamers alike may roll their eyes and tut at the unartistic name. However, I implore you not to judge a book by its cover – or rather in this case, a game by its title. Beneath its cliché exterior is something that brings a new light to that age-old classic: choice-oriented storytelling, and jeez does it come in with bells on.

Originally named Stories: The Hidden Path, Stories: The Path of Destinies is an action/adventure RPG built in the Unreal engine by Montreal-based indie developer, Spearhead Games. We follow the story of Reynardo, a clever, anthropomorphic fox with a bit of a hero complex and a touch of bad luck as he gets sucked into a rebellion against the emperor. His major problem is that, not only is he torn by different decisions to defeat the mad monarch that risks his friends and loved ones, but he also has a ton of terrible ways to mess things up and fewer to be successful.

[...]

The concept is not original, nor is Stories: The Path of Destinies‘ mechanics but there’s just something so endearing about it that makes me love the game that much more. I needn’t insult anyone by commenting on its replayability. Safe to say you’ll get about 24 games out of it depending on whether you see it through or give up, and for the current price it’s not a bad deal. For a game that’s well-structured, well-planned and well-designed I could hardly be more thankful that I was fortunate enough to cover it. In such a short space of time Stories has rocketed onto my list of favourite indie games and if that’s not compliment enough then I don’t know how else to phrase it. It’s not perfect, but it is perfectly charming.

The Path of Destinies - Reviews

by Myrthos, 22:37

Here are a couple of reviews for the today released Stories: The Path of Destinies that range from reasonable to good.

Playstation Lifestyle, 8.5

branching paths may bring to mind unnecessary padding and repetition, but the developers at Spearhead Games clearly took the initiative to avoid that. Stories is a lot of fun to play through multiple times, thanks to some thoroughly smooth and enjoyable combat — even though it’s snatched its main ideas from the jaws of the Batman: Arkham games — and great level layouts that let you explore new territory even on multiple return trips. From an aesthetic perspective, I really think a lot of players will dig the fairytale-inspired character design and colorful environments, which might help them overlook the occasional technical hiccups. Overall, this is one action-RPG fans won’t want to miss.

WCCFtech, 7.4

Even with its flaws, Stories: The Path Of Destinies is an enjoyable action role playing game with a very unique feel and gameplay features. The blend of old and new mechanics works incredibly well, easily keeping players engaged in the first few playthroughs. Things do become repetitive in the long run, but the unique choice system manages to carry things along until the true ending.

We Got This Covered, 3.5/5

As a sum of its parts, Stories: The Path of Destinies ends up being a good game that could have been great. There’s a lot to like here, don’t get me wrong, but repetition and certain performance issues keep this adventure from being something truly special.

The Path of Destinies - New Trailer

by Myrthos, 21:19

A new trailer has surfaced for Stories: The Path of Destinies.

Spearhead Games has released a new trailer for Stories: The Path of Destinies which demonstrates just how easily a hero's fate can be decided by one wrong move. And make no mistake: While Stories has a fairytale-like charm, Reynardo's not exactly in for a smooth ride. Take a look at the Narrative Trailer for Stories, launching April 12 on PlayStation 4 and PC.

Reynardo, an ex-pirate fox setting out to put an end to the war consuming the entire realm, has several different cards he can play to try to stop the mad Emperor. But with the Rebellion finished, his next moves will spell out the fate of, well, everything. Surely, he can make this work despite his abysmal track record, right?

Craft swords, upgrade your equipment, and keep an eye out for treasure as you take up arms in a beautifully illustrated action RPG reminiscent of classic choose-your-own-adventure books. If you meet with an untimely end, use Reynardo's mysterious tome to rewind and execute a different plan, all while preserving the knowledge gained from previous storylines.

Live Reynardo's myriad destinies, parse the narrative puzzle, and weave a story worthy of a hero.

Stories: The Path of Destinies unfolds April 12. Pre-orders are open on the PlayStation Store as well as on the Humble Store, with a special 10% discount.

Stories: The Path of Destinies - Interview @ WCCFtech

by Myrthos, 12:16

WCCFTech has talked to Spearhead’s Co-Founder Malik Boukhir about Stories: The Path of destinies.

  • The signature feature of Stories: The Path of Destinies seems to be the ability to influence the story via choices, or the titular paths. Can you explain in detail how this is going to work? Will there be multiple endings?
  • Stories is based on the idea of an enchanted book that tells a different tale each time you open it. A narrator reads the stories in this interactive book as they are written by the player’s choices and actions. And unlike other games with narrative choices, each choice doesn’t just lead to a different ending, it leads to an entirely different story (no single choice will fold back to the outcome of any other choice). Overall there are over two dozen unique stories to discover, with very varied themes and tones, ranging from romance to dark Lovecraftian horror. All these stories are true in their own way. The characters remain the same, though their fates may differ wildly from one tale to the next. Similarly, events can unfold in completely new and unexpected ways, and based on the choices the player makes. However, Reynardo remains aware of all these outcomes (think Edge of Tomorrow), as he tries―and often fails spectacularly―to defeat the evil empire he’s fighting. Just like the player, he grows and learns truths from each story. As you gather the clues each story contains, you’ll eventually be able to figure out a way to win, destroy the Empire, and make it out alive―thus finally making Reynardo the hero he set out to be.

Stories: The Path of Destinies - Trailer

by Myrthos, 13:00

The Second trailer of Stories: The Path of Destinies has been released. Before we go there, here is the press release, detailing what the game is about.

Stories: The Path of Destinies with a New Trailer

November 23, 2015 - Montreal, Canada/ Spearhead Games has released a new trailer for Stories: The Path of Destinies, an action RPG about a sword-wielding fox who's gotten himself into a bit of trouble. Reynardo reluctantly joined a losing battle against the mad Emperor and he quickly became the rebellion's last hope. Can he come up with a plan that won't blow up in his face, for a change?

In Stories, each choice you make takes Reynardo into a unique narrative. From tongue-in-cheek takes on heroic adventures to dark, Lovecraftian scenes, Stories' repertoire is as diverse as it is action-packed. But Reynardo's fateful decisions won't always be easy: Sometimes retrieving a weapon lost at the beginning of time means sacrificing the life of an old friend.

If he has any hope to save the realm, Reynardo must journey across Boreas, a world of floating islands with locales ranging from half-buried desert ruins to vertiginous, ice-topped mountains. And with the Emperor's troops intent on stopping him at every turn, Reynardo is sure to make use of his Sword Fu technique, a fluid, offense-oriented combat style that players can customize to suit their preferences.

With more than a few ways to screw up, can Reynardo choose the path that will lead him to victory?
