Stray Gods - Review @ Polygon

by Hiddenx, 15:37

Polygon has reviewed Stray Gods:

The musical RPG Stray Gods needed more rehearsal time

An uneven pantheon

The stage was set for a cow and a witch to fall in love. The stage in question was inside the actors’ minds and alternated between a shoddy, makeshift replication of a Romeo and Juliet backdrop and a glamorous setup ripped straight from Beauty and the Beast. One wrong line could have transformed the budding romance into an unspeakable tragedy, but with the right balance of emotional honesty and empathetic listening, Asterion the Minotaur and Hecate the witch walked away happy.

This is Stray Gods at its finest. The problem is that Stray Gods is so often not at its finest.

The self-styled “urban fantasy role-playing musical” from developer Summerfall Studios and Dragon Age writer David Gaider follows Grace (voiced by Laura Bailey), a directionless college dropout who suddenly inherits the powers of a Greek Muse after her new friend Calliope (Ashley Johnson) dies a shocking death. The other Greek deities, called Idols in the modern world, suspect Grace of the murder, and she has to find the true culprit in seven days — about seven hours of real-world play time — before the gods execute her.

[...]

Stray Gods is ambitious in its goals, and while the road Summerfall and co. take to reach them is rough and uneven, I won’t be forgetting Grace’s tale anytime soon. It’s a clever format, and the unfulfilled potential makes me excited for future attempts to meld games and theater.

Stray Gods - Released

by Hiddenx, 15:54

The musical RPG Stray Gods has been released:

Stray Gods

In a modern fantasy world, college dropout Grace is granted the power of a Muse - power she’ll need to find out the truth behind her predecessor’s death before time runs out. You’ll decide who Grace allies with, who she can trust, and who may betray her in this beautifully hand-illustrated roleplaying musical.

Written by David Gaider comes Stray Gods - an urban fantasy tale of finding your place, taking charge of your fate, and discovering answers. Your choices will change the endings, as well as the path you take to get there.

A compelling story of hope, self-discovery, and forging your path.

Adventure, love, and songs await!

Charm, negotiate, or strong-arm your way through their world as Grace, playing through original, fully interactive musical numbers composed by Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, Tripod (musicians Scott Edgar, Steven Gates, and Simon Hall) and Eurovision Australia’s own Montaigne (Jess Cerro). Fully orchestrated and performed by an all-star cast, you’ll feel as though you’re right there on the stage. With thousands of potential variations based on your choices, you’ll craft the soundtrack to your own one of a kind musical experience.

Choice and consequence built from the DNA of RPGs - no two playthroughs are the same.

Delve into a hidden world of mythic Greek gods and monsters as you get to know a cast of hilarious, enigmatic, and compelling characters. Forget what you know about these mythological beings - in Stray Gods you’ll forge friendships and find foes with many familiar names, but not so familiar stories. Play as star and stagehand as you determine the story you want to tell through conversation and song.

Find friendship, love, or yourself.

Build friendships with mortals and Gods alike. Stoke the fires of romance if you so choose - explore, pursue, and confess your love with four potential paramours. Decide who you want to be through every choice. David Gaider’s storytelling and characters come to life with performances by an all-star cast, with the likes of Laura Bailey, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and more cast members across video games, television, and Broadway.

A musical for video game lovers, and a video game for musical lovers.

With all the comedy and tragedy of your favorite stage shows, Stray Gods is a tongue-in-cheek and heartfelt reconception of Greek mythology combining what we love about contemporary musical theater with video games where character and story take center stage. Collaborating with some of the best in music, broadway, television, and games - Stray Gods is a debut not to be missed.

Stray Gods - Release Date Update

by Hiddenx, 14:34

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical will be released on August 10 now - the reason: Baldur's Gate 3:

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical Date Update

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical will now release on August 10th

We’re so excited - Stray Gods is under a month away!

We’re counting the days and we know you are too, but we need to make a slight adjustment to the calendar. We’re moving our launch date to August 10th, 2023.

We want everyone to have ample space to check out Stray Gods when it launches. Baldur’s Gate 3 is hotly anticipated (by us, too!) and we want to give our fans room to celebrate Stray Gods.

We also want everyone to be able to play on their preferred device at launch. This is a huge undertaking for any team, let alone an indie shipping its first title. This extra week allows us to have performance parity as close as possible - across every platform.

We're so excited to share Stray Gods with you and we hope you'll join us on August 10th to play and celebrate this game we've poured so much love into!

Stray Gods - Complicated to make

by Hiddenx, 07:13

Rock Paper Shotgun reports that the musical RPG Stray Gods was not easy to make:

David Gaider says making mythological musical Stray Gods was "a little bit more complicated" than expected

A chat with Summerfall Studios' co-founder and a hands-on with the Greek tragedy-drama-romance-mystery

What can I say? I love games that have a bit of a sing-song. I've enjoyed the pop platforming of Sayonara Wild Hearts, the DIY DJ-ing in Fuser, the grungy game-meets-album Teenage Blob, and the recently released fist-pumping robot-thrashing Hi-Fi Rush just to name some from the top of my noggin'.

Music is a definitely big part of these games, but Stray Gods: A Roleplaying Musical has set itself on a different kind of musical path, in that it’s actually a musical. I'm talking like a full-on ballad-belter, curtain-caller, exit-stage-left-er musical. And get this: it’s also a modern retelling of the mythos behind the Greek Gods. It feels like my inner theatre kid has chugged ten Red Bulls and is waiting for her cue to burst out.

Stray Gods follows Grace, a college dropout trying to make it big with her band, but after she gets caught up in some godly drama and obtains the power of a Muse, she gets accused of murder and must find a way to prove her innocence. The broad strokes of the story are about hope, self-discovery, and trying to figure your shit out - and it's all told through the power of song.

[...]

“When Liam and I got together, we were talking about if we were to start a studio, what would we do that would be both different, but something that we both really wanted to do,” Gaider tells me. “I was like, let's do a musical, I've always wanted to try, and we thought that would be easy but turns out it's a little bit more complicated.”

It definitely sounds complicated. Gaider tells me that Stray Gods will have a total of 4-5 hours of musical content with each playthrough letting you hear around an hour and a bit of that. The reason why you’ll only hear around a quarter of the music, though, is because Stray Gods is a choice-driven adventure and each decision you make dramatically changes the lyrics and music you hear.

Stray Gods - Release Date: August 3

by Hiddenx, 15:37

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical will be released on August 3. Couchpotato spotted a preview on Gaymingmag:

Stray Gods: The Role-Playing Musical has our full attention

I was always going to be a sucker for Stray Gods – it’s an RPG musical, for god’s sake – but I was woefully unprepared for just how exciting the premise and narrative potential that Summerfall Studios have cooked up.

With the game demo released last week, I sat down to see whether my expectations would be met. The short answer is: yes, this combines all my interests – video games and musicals. The long answer is that Stray Gods is a musical that looks like it will pull at the heartstrings, embrace its campy side, and give us a video game we won’t soon forget.

The first segment of the demo introduces players to the protagonist Grace (Laura Bailey), a 20s-something woman in a band alongside her best friend Freddie (Janina Gavankar). They’re looking for someone to complete their merry band, but nobody seems to be making the cut. We see Freddie try to reach out to Grace, because there is a clear emotional and logical disconnect in our protagonist – one that feels hauntingly real to witness – but to no avail. Even in a room full of people, Grace is alone and adrift.

The rest of the segment cuts to what I’ve been gnawing at the bit to see: music! To be more exact, we’re treated to a soliloquy from Grace where she likens herself to a boat with no oar, lost at sea and unsure if there’s something wrong with the world, or just wrong with her. If that isn’t a mood, then I don’t know what is.

Stray Gods - Musical RPG By Summerfall Studios

by Silver, 12:52

Gamingbolt reports that musical RPG Stray Gods will be coming soon. Apparently this is the RPG that David Gaider has been working on.

Summerfall Studios is a venture founded by David Gaider (lead writer on Dragon Age) in 2019, and the studio has finally unveiled the curtains on its upcoming game Stray Gods (formerly known as Chorus). Check out the teaser trailer down below.

Taking place in what the developers call a “modern fantasy world”, Stray Gods puts players into the shoes of Grace as she embarks on a quest to unravel the mystery of the death of the Last Muse. The premise of juxtaposing Greek Gods against a modern setting certainly sounds intriguing, and the hand-drawn art style also looks fabulous in a similar vein.
