Styx: Shards of Darkness - Interview

by Hiddenx, 01:03

WCCFTech has interviewed Cyanide’s  Julien Desourteaux, Lead Level Designer of Styx:

Styx: Shards of Darkness Main Quest Lasts 15 Hours; No PS4 Pro Enhancements Planned

Cyanide’s Styx: Shards of Darkness is due for release in about a week from now. After previewing the stealth game sequel recently, we had the chance to talk to Cyanide’s  Julien Desourteaux, Lead Level Designer.

[...]

What’s the single biggest improvement in the feature set when comparing Shards of Darkness to Master of Shadows?

Styx’s flow of movement has been improved, and animations are much smoother. He can now use ropes, and the crafting skill tree branch offers more freedom for players to experiment.

Having more diversity in missions and their objectives was one of our main intentions for this sequel. The player will almost always have a few objectives active at the same time, so they can choose the order in which they want to achieve them.

This feature is good for replay value, as some objectives have alternative ways to complete them. Additionally, in the co-op multiplayer, players can choose to stick together or split up to achieve the objectives.

Styx: Shards of Darkness - New Trailer

by Hiddenx, 21:50

Here's a new gameplay trailer for Styx: Shards of Darkness - the stealth adventure game is announced for March 2017:

loading...

Styx: Shards of Darkness is Cyanide Studio's upcoming Stealth Adventure game arriving March 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Today, discover 3 minutes of brand new gameplay footage featuring a slew of Styx's new tools and abilities in three different locations - Wildoran the hunters' village, the secret Sanctuary of the Dark Elven city Korrangar, and Thoben, the city of thieves.

Styx's second adventure builds upon the foundations laid in the tower of Akenash, with more fluid movement and climbing abilities, a richer story told with cinematics including an enhanced bestiary, side-missions to complete, as well as new and improved sneaking and assassination skills.

The titular goblin's aerial abilities have been improved and expanded. Swing from ropes and attack from above with a slew of new tools such as the crossbow, with a range of different bolts such as the non-lethal poison bolt. The crossbow can be used not only to kill or disable enemies, but also to detach environmental objects crushing those below.

Cloning is one of Styx's signature abilities, and they've received a major upgrade. One of the new upgradeable abilities is the cocoon, which is a craftable item that you can throw to spawn your clone at a distance. Another new ability is called Rebirth, which teleports Styx to his clone's location, killing it in the process. It can be used in a number of ways - to travel to spots that are difficult to reach, or to get out of danger when things get dicey.

You will need to use all of Styx's tools and abilities to get to your goals. If you choose to specialize in crafting, Styx gets access to another craftable contraption, the Acid Trap, which dissolves enemy corpses after they step on them. This is particularly useful against enemies whose armor cannot be penetrated by Styx's dagger, and enemies whose body is too heavy to carry.

Styx: Shards of Darkness - First gameplay video and Q1 2017 release

Originally expected for the end of this year, Styx: Shards of Darkness will finally arrive in Q1 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Patrick Pligersdorffer, CEO at Cyanide Studio, explains, "With this new episode of Styx we updated our engine from Unreal 3 to Unreal 4. This update has brought so much to the Styx series, from graphical enhancements to new gameplay mechanics and features. The engine transition has required some time for our team to adapt to. We're dedicated to providing the best stealth experience possible for players, so in agreement with our publisher Focus, we are delaying the game until the first quarter of 2017."

Styx: Shards of Darkness - New Screenshots

by Myrthos, 22:59

Three new screenshots for Styx: Shards of Darkness have been made available.

Styx: Shards of Darkness reveals images of a few of the many dangers to overcome

Styx: Shards of Darkness, the sequel to Cyanide Studios' stealth cult-classic Master of Shadows, comes to consoles and PC in 2016. Styx creeps back in a new adventure packed with bigger production, tonnes of new features and a new engine: Unreal Engine 4. Today's new images reveal a few of the many dangers your green anti-hero will have to face during his journey.

One of the hostile factions you will meet in the huge underground city of Korrangar is composed of the Dark Elves. Dark Elves were previously Elves who had to live without any amber for multiple generations. Slowly, they have been turning into fanatic and bloodthirsty creatures. They became masters in Quartz fabrication, a new, much more dangerous, source of power. They are also experts at goblin hunting and the Exterminator Dark Elf is proof of that. He has honed his skills to perfection, and is able to flush out pesky creatures hiding in dark corners and hard-to-reach places with toxic bombs.

If there's an even more dangerous place than Korrangar, it would be Wildoran, the city of goblin hunters. Wildoran inhabitants are stout people wearing heavy armour - the powerful Dwarves. Styx is unable to breach their impenetrable defence, so you must innovate and adapt to disable or avoid them. Every dwarf also has a supernatural sense of smell, and is able to slowly track Styx as he moves from cover to cover.

This is only a small example of the many enemy types Styx will face in his journey. Each faction has many unique classes of enemies and will require you to creatively utilize all of Styx's tools to overcome them: assassination, amber powers, talents and skills, equipment, etc. But that's not all! Deep in the most dangerous of areas lie greater foes and obstacles that are epic in size and scale - monstrous beings that overshadow anything Styx has ever seen!

Styx: Shards of Darkness - Interview

by Hiddenx, 21:00

TheSixthAxis interviewed Julien Desourteaux on Styx: Shards of Darkness:

Interview: Julien Desourteaux On Styx, Variety & Difficult Stealth

Master of Shadows introduced Styx to a lot of people, whether they bought it at launch or decided to jump in during it’s time on PlayStation Plus and now Xbox Live’s Games with Gold.

The devious little goblin is back in Shards of Darkness – read our early impressions here – and so we sat down with Lead Level Designer Julien Desourteaux to talk about the game and how Cyanide are looking to improve on the original.

TSA: After the events of the first game in the Tower of Akenash, what’s next for Styx? Where is Shards of Darkness set? Who is he going to stealing from and murdering this time?

Julien Desourteaux: Without too many spoilers – which is hard because Shards of Darkness is set between Master of Shadows and Of Orcs and Men – the green plague has been created and there has been the Goblin invasion. It’s a completely new situation for the people in this world, and so they try to kill them and to hunt them. That’s the start of Shards of Darkness.

Also, there is a huge lack of amber, and that’s why Styx, though he can still create some clones and he can still become invisible, you will see that it’s very rare to find those potions. But you find a way to find more, and that’s why you will have to travel. It’s not like in the first one where it was all set up in one location. We wanted the player to have a [journey]. [...]

The centuries-old goblin assassin Styx returns in a new stealth game, Styx: Shards of Darkness, with a bigger budget, bigger ideas, and a new engine: Unreal 4. Revealed in the first official screenshot of the game, check out a nimble, more refined Styx, built from the ground-up. Master of Shadows was a valiant exploration into the world of the green goblin thief, but in Shards of Darkness, delve deeper into a more complex narrative and fully realized world.

Having been in development for 6 months, discover in this first screenshot the new Styx, putting his skills to good use within the heart of Körangar, one of the many extensive mission areas to explore and creep around inStyx: Shards of Darkness.

Following the fall of Akenash tower, an extraordinary matter has forced Styx out of hiding to infiltrate Körangar, the city of the Dark Elves. Moreover, the Elves have joined forces with the Dwarves, and the only thing both races have in common is a mutual hatred of the Goblins...
