The 15th Anniversary is Back for the 30th!

Tales of Xillia was originally released in Japan in 2011 and in other regions in 2013 for the Tales series’ 15th anniversary. Now, 14 years later, the game has finally broken the shackles of being locked to the PlayStation 3 and has been remastered as part of Bandai Namco’s Remastered Project. Earlier this year, I reviewed Tales of Graces f Remastered, a solid remaster of my introduction to the franchise. The remaster itself was solid, though I had my misgivings with the game. Much is the same in Tales of Xillia Remastered, and it’s a comfort to have these solid remasters release back-to-back after Tales of Symphonia Remastered was released in a disappointing state.

Tales of Xillia Remastered is another successful feather in the cap of the series’ 30th anniversary Remastered Project. While the game itself has some wrinkles in the story department, and visually the game shows its age, it is still filled with fun combat, wonderful characters, and one of the best antagonists in the whole series.

Tales of Xillia Remastered Review – A Classic JRPG Finally Unshackled

Tales of Xillia Remastered is the first game in the duology that originally launched exclusively on the PS3. While it’s a bit disappointing that both titles aren’t releasing together, this still marks an important milestone since the series was previously limited to one platform. The remaster includes all post-launch DLC, making it one of the best ways to experience the story and world, even if most of the extra content is just cosmetic or bonus items.

The story takes place in the world of Rieze Maxia and features two main characters, Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell, each offering a slightly different perspective and storyline. The plot revolves around the mysterious draining of mana from the world, seemingly caused by the kingdom of Rashugal. Jude is a medical student who unexpectedly crosses paths with Milla, a woman capable of summoning four powerful elemental spirits, setting off a journey that binds their fates together.

A solid and smooth port of a defining JRPG, Tales of Xillia Remastered delivers an enjoyable experience with its engaging co-op battle system and thoughtful quality-of-life improvements. The charming cast and vibrant world remain as captivating as ever, but the dated user interface and a handful of minor bugs hold it back from feeling truly modern
