Telepath Tactics Liberated - New Patch

by Hiddenx, 11:21

Telepath Tactics Liberated got a new patch:

Patch version 1.0.41: graphical and gamepad improvements!

The tables have turned...3D!

Greetings, tactics fans! I've got another update for you with a long-awaited graphical improvement and some bug fixes.

Our most visible change this update involves, quite literally, tables. Due to the way Unity's perspective camera handles 2D sprites, sprites near the edges of the area visible onscreen tend to skew outwards. This looks pretty normal for characters and objects that are relatively tall and narrow (like trees), but not so much for longer, squatter objects--like tables. As you can see, when those skew outwards, it looks like they're positioned counter to camera perspective:

[...]

You may recall that in the last minor update, I improved how "flat" sprites like traps are displayed. Tables aren't strictly flat, however--they have more dimensionality, and so required a different approach. Well, I finally took some time, got good (enough) at Blender, and figured out how to actually texture and export 3D models and get them working in-game!

This meant modeling a 3D version of the basic table, adapting the existing 2D pixel art for tables to create textures for every table variant in the game (basic, with food, with beer, with dice, with books, with map, with papers...), and importing them into the game. It sounds simple when I type it out, but this was days of work! And here's the result:

[...]

Pretty neat, eh? Now that I've now definitively fixed the issue of table sprites skewing near the edges of the screen, I can use this technique to address other such issues going forward (as well as to create brand-new 3D objects!) It's a small thing, but I'm quite happy about it.

But wait, there's more--let's run through some other improvements I've made to the game with this update:

-- a recent change in the code designed to prevent Together in Battle from connecting to Steam as though it were Telepath Tactics Liberated apparently broke achievements for Telepath Tactics Liberated. This is now fixed.

-- the mouse cursor is now fully locked, disabled, and rendered invisible when loading or starting a new game with gamepad controls enabled. This way, you can't accidentally mess with the cursor by bumping your mouse when in gamepad mode.

-- fixed: when in gamepad mode, the game was displaying a selection arrow over the new turn box at the start of AI-controlled turns, then leaving the cursor arrow onscreen after the new turn box faded from view.

-- fixed an exploit involving skills with an after-attack effect of "Can Move" (such as Lance or Bow) granted by a weapon with a remaining durability of 1. When using such a skill with a 1-durability weapon, it would break the weapon, after which the character could equip another weapon granting that same skill to use the skill a second time in the same turn.

-- fixed: the character creator was auto-marking weapons as equipped even if a different weapon was manually marked as equipped via "[E]" notation in the inventory field.

-- fixed: in cut scenes in gamepad mode, the Options button would sometimes inappropriately gain focus and open the options menu when selecting something else onscreen.

-- added in some code so the game can now detect if it's being run on Steam Deck. (This doesn't do anything just yet, but it will allow me to diagnose and fix issues with the the game when it's running on Steam Deck going forward.)

That's all we've got this time, folks. Thanks again for all your support!

Tactically yours,

Craig

Telepath Tactics Liberated - Randomizer Mode

by Hiddenx, 15:21

With patch 1.0.35 Telepath Tactics Liberated will get a randomizer mode:

New in Telepath Tactics Liberated: Randomizer mode!

The main campaign in Telepath Tactics Liberated can now be played in randomizer mode!

Randomizer mode mixes things up by removing the cast of characters you know and love, and swapping in a selection of procedurally generated characters with classes chosen at random. This allows you to replay the main campaign with totally different units at your disposal--you'll get a fresh experience and a different challenge every time!

You'll also find new tools to customize your characters in randomizer mode. New limited-use items let chosen characters place traps and timed charges; special books teach characters skills they wouldn't ordinarily know; and Emma can be trained into a new class of your choice a few battles into the campaign!

I've also added a couple of new achievements in for beating randomizer mode: Roller of Dice and Master of Randomness. Are you up to the challenge?

To unlock randomizer mode, simply beat the main campaign on any difficulty. The next time you go to start a new game, select The Randomizer of Emma Strider
from the list of campaigns and randomizer mode will commence! (If you've already beaten the game and received the Liberator achievement, the game will automatically detect it and unlock randomizer mode for you.)

Telepath Tactics Liberated - Review

by Hiddenx, 11:56

2ToneToby has reviewed Telepath Tactics Liberated:

The best strat RPG game released this year is Telepath Tactics: Liberated, and yes, I have beaten Symphony of War.

Do not be thrown off by the art style! This game is straight fire and terrifically written. I regret sleeping on this game, but ultimately I place it as the best Strat RPG of 2022 thus far, even above Symphony of War.

This game is a remake of Telepath Tactics (2015) in a new engine, recreated entirely using the TT: Liberated's Campaign Designer tool, and all I can say is wow. It's like an attached Strategy RPG Studio program with the purchase of the game, and I'm looking forward to making my own story and utilizing the creator.

Onto the game though. Half shining force, half fire emblem, half 3d push/pull/throw terrain mechanics leads to quite a unique experience in the genre. In addition to your typical swords and magic, there are also traps that can be placed on the field of battle, and there's even an engineer class for creating bridges/barricades/even using satchel charges to have a crossbowman ignite the charge, clearing out the thick bush like a Daisy Cutter in Vietnam. The mechanical golems are absolutely enthralling to use, and remind me a bit of Guntz from Shining Force. I absolutely love the Engineer class and want to create a more or less an Operation Overlord style beach assault where bridges and satchel charges must be constructed/detonated to reach the objective, which brings me to my next point:

The Missions: The mission objectives vary quite a bit, from kill all enemies, to rescuing others, to trying to escape/reach a location while under assault. The missions have been rather varied in terms of terrain and scenarios, each one with interesting challenges. I haven't felt there has been a lackluster mission yet during my playtime. This game will challenge you and keep you on your toes. Some missions offer achievements for going above and beyond the call of duty, where instead of just busting in, rescuing an individual and departing you can instead opt to fight the entire war camp. It took numerous retries and replays of turns, but not because of tactical errors, not RNG.

Telepath Tactics Liberated - New Patch

by Hiddenx, 19:05

Telepath Tactics Liberated got a new patch:

Patch version 1.0.07

  • fixed: the in-game description of Hidden status was out of date and inaccurate.
  • Hidden status now automatically ends if the affected character hits another character with a non-zero-damage skill.
  • characters with the Clarity status effect can now see Hidden characters.
  • rebalanced Throw Knife: it is once again locked to 2 range, but now does not end the turn after use.
  • fixed: AI-driven characters emerging from fog of war (or disappearing into it) would not actually appear or disappear upon completing their move if character movement speed was set to 4.
  • fixed: in some circumstances, pop-up spawners would fail to remove themselves from the battlefield, thereby causing the game to effectively freeze at the end of a zoomed-in combat exchange while waiting for pop-ups to be removed.
  • fixed: if the player disabled army 0 in the map editor's army subeditor, then opened up the New Character screen in the map editor, the army picker would still default to army 0 anyway.
  • if you place characters on a map in the map editor, remove the armies those characters belong to, and save the map, the map editor will now automatically detect orphaned armies in the character data and reset those characters' armies to the first army number actually represented in the map settings.
  • fixed: sound loops from tested scenes would continue playing upon returning to the campaign editor.
  • fixed: the game would throw a fatal error if a SetStat call setting the Coords stat had misformatted coordinates. Now, it aborts and sends an error message to the log instead.
  • new script action: RemoveTrigger. Removes a trigger from an object at specific coordinates without removing the object itself.
  • fixed: automatic removal of Use Once triggers upon use of the attached object wasn't "sticking."
  • fixed: the AIHandicap action was not working as intended.
  • fixed: the Escape key was not canceling give actions in combat.
  • fixed: canceling a give action by clicking the unit to move them would leave the "Give to whom?" text overlay onscreen.
