Demonicon - Review @ Pixel Perfect Gaming

by Couchpotato, 04:19

Pixel Perfect Gaming has a late review for The Dark Eye: Demonicon, and they award the game a final score of 4/5.

Unlike most role-playing games, everything you do in Demonicon has a direct impact on the story. A simple decision like saving someone’s life can alter the course of the game. Even deciding to kill someone can have a cataclysmic effect on the game’s outcome. Thanks to this feature, Demonicon’s gameplay is engaging from start to finish.

Aside from its compelling story, Demonicon offers multiple endings based on your in-game choices. This alone adds to the game’s replay value.  With a story that spans 40 hours of continuous gameplay (which also includes side quests), gamers looking to invest their time in a lengthy adventure will find it well spent in Kalypso’s Demonicon.

Demonicon - Review @ RPGFan

by Couchpotato, 02:13

RPGFan has posted a new review for The Dark Eye: Demonicon giving the game a final score of 70/100.

Demonicon is no worse than quite a few triple A releases with their big budgets and big names, and yet it has such a smaller chance of success because of its poor production values and foreign origins. We're too easily swayed by crisp graphics and the hype of a sequel. The current search for and worship of bad art and entertainment has exaggerated our perspectives even further. Demonicon is ugly, awkward, and unknown, but it's still an average action RPG.

Demonicon - Review @ GameBanshee

by Couchpotato, 02:43

GameBanshee's Steven Carter reviews The Dark Eye: Demonicon. Here is the conclusion so make sure to read the whole three page review to get the whole story.

To sum up The Dark Eye: Demonicon, I'm going to steal a word from the previous paragraph: "okay."  Demonicon is a middling game with probably more bad points than good, but it's playable in a Dungeon Lords sort of way.  At some point when the price drops down, you might even want to try it out.  The Demonicon campaign lasts about 25 hours, so it's the sort of game you can pick up and play quickly, and if you don't like it then it's no great loss.  But just to repeat: you should wait for the price to drop.  Everything about Demonicon made me think budget title, and that's where your expectations should lie.

Demonicon - Review @ GamingNexus

by Couchpotato, 03:55

The GamingNexus is the next site to review The Dark Eye - Demonicon. and like the rest of reviews finds the game to be average. At least the score this time is 7/10.

Demonicon squanders its potential for being set in The Dark Eye fantasy world with both a confusing narrative and average gameplay experience. With its tough competition among a vast amount of modern role-playing games, Demonicon can only be recommended to those that can look past its often lackluster and dated presentation. There are some truly original elements in Demonicon's world and narrative that unfortunately are too brief and few overall. At its current price, The Dark Eye - Demonicon can only be recommended once it goes on sale or enters the bargain bin.

Demonicon - Review @ GamePlanet

by Couchpotato, 00:20

GamePlanet is the next site to review The Dark Eye: Demonicon, and come to the conclusion the game is simply average with a score of 4.5/10.

Ultimately what Noumena Studios has delivered is a lacklustre and utterly generic fantasy adventure that isn’t so much bad as it is completely uninteresting. There are some great ideas in here, which makes the overall failure to deliver on any of them all the more disappointing.

Demonicon - Review Roundup #2

by Couchpotato, 00:34

Here are two more reviews for The Dark Eye - Demonicon.

Examiner - No Score

It might sound like I’m picking apart “The Dark Eye: Demonicon,”but nothing could be further from the truth. I actually really enjoyed the game. There are quite a few technical areas that could use some improvement and the storyline is similar to the standard fantasy tropes, but it really was a lot of fun. “Demonicon” is a competent third-person action RPG somewhere between “The Witcher,” “Dragon Age,” and “Darksiders.” With a little bit of polish, the game could be truly great. The bottom line is, that I would definitely play the sequel.

Wolfs Gaming Blog - 2/5

All in all Demonicon ranks as a merely okay RPG, one that’s worth picking up when it pops up in a Steam sale or if you’re really a die-hard roleplaying fanatic looking for his or her next fix. The clumsy combat, poor dialogue and technical limitations of the game sadly overshadow an otherwise intriguing plot set in a dark fantasy world filled with great ideas and concepts that are never realised.

Demonicon - Review @ Saving Content

by Couchpotato, 02:43

Saving Content has posted the next review for The Dark Eye - Demonicon. The review while scoreless calls the game entertaining, but warns it does get annoying at times.

Demonicon has a lot of potential, drawing from The Dark Eye leaves room for sequels and improvements on the core mechanics that makes this title standout. As it stands as a solitary title, cannot be recommended at full price. It’s far from broken, in fact it works and plays well, but it isn’t a very polished game. Over the course of 20+ hours, it definitely gets its hooks into you, but those hooks tend to get annoying and you’ll want to be done before you see the credits roll.

Demonicon - Review @ Geek Pride

by Couchpotato, 04:45

Geek Pride has the latest review for The Dark Eye - Demonicon and they give the game a 3/5, or as they above average.

Many RPGs suffer from the problem of a static world, and while Demonicon is far from the worst for this, it does often feel that the world isn’t so much changed by you as completely dictated and revolving around your actions. While it’s great to give an RPG character importance, when you make it so they appear to be the sole interest of the world, the integrity and interest of that world is lessened. Playing through Demonicon, nice as it is to be the centre of attention, does feel worryingly like everybody else does the same thing all day, every day.

Ultimately, Demonicon makes you work for its love. It can be a bit of a bitch to play, with enemies often seeming vastly superior to you among other things, and at times I definitely felt frustrated by it, but if you stick with it, it’s definitely worth the play. There’s a fair amount that could be improved about the game, but once you’ve dealt with the fact that it was created on a smaller budget than mainstream titles, it’s easier to get on with simply enjoying the warped path you are led down. Demonicon may come with a bit of a learning curve but it’s one that, in the end, pays off in a wonderfully dark way.

Demonicon - Review Roundup

by Couchpotato, 00:27

Here is the first batch of reviews for the The Dark Eye: Demonicon.

Worldsfactory- 69/100

A decent start for the first game in the Dark Eye series that offers an introduction to a potentially interesting fantasy universe. Unfortunately, sluggish combat, dull characters, and generally poor design choices make it a fairly forgettable experience.

GamingBolt -7/10

A deep and rich storyline coupled by immersive visuals and player choice are where the game shines the most. Although animations aren’t the liveliest of sort it’s not a game breaking bug nor does it pull you from the immersion

StrategyInformer - 6/10

Despite this though, and as much as I hate to say it, Demonicon is a bit of a sub-par release. Maybe hardcore Dark Eye fans will appreciate the lore and its place in the universe, but on its own it’s not a fantastic story, and it’s not a well-designed game either. It’s all functional, but in a fairly lazy kind of way.

HookedGamers - 7/10

With Demonicon being far from flawless, I found myself wondering whether or not I enjoyed Demonicon enough to give it a positive recommendation. Honestly, I did. For every spinning boss, for every limitation in skills and character improvement and for every unblinking pair of eyes I looked at, I enjoyed my time with the game. Despite its issues, The Dark Eye: Demonicon remains a fun adventure that, while lacking polish, is an enjoyable journey through The Dark Eye setting.

Softpedia - 8.5/10

The choices you make can influence the world around. It can shake the entire world of a small community or save the life of a certain individual. This is all you will get because Demonicon, as mentioned earlier, is not about moral choice.

There’s no good or evil in Demonicon and you won’t be rewarded if you take a certain path that might sound closer to good. But the choices you make will tell another story, you can be the savior of a high-profile citizen and nemesis of an entire community at the same time.

I’m certain Dark Eye fans will devour Demonicon in just a few days even though it promises 25 hours of gameplay, if you only follow the main quest.

Demonicon - Released Early on Steam?

by Couchpotato, 20:39

If you check out the Steam forums for Demonicon it seems people who pre-ordered can now play the game a day early.  It wouldn't be the first Kalypso published title to release early on Steam.

jacko640

game can be played already this is very weird, just bought the game a couple minutes ago, and on steam it says

Available: 25 October 2013
This game will unlock in approximately 1 day and 7 hours

but when i clicked play anyway the game installs .net 4.0 and.... starts to play

not that i complain but something is wrong with this release date

Tomme

yeah same here. exactly at 10:00 in the morning (here in Austria/Europe) it started to download the 6 GB for the Game. After that i give it a try to start, and yeah, it starts... i played the beginning (tutorial) and realized with FRAPS that the Game is running about 150-200 FPS @ all set to MAX. and thats why I started the Thread with the Frame Limiter :)

maybe there is a feature that preorders are able to play the game 1 day before release :)

Demonicon - Two More Previews

by Couchpotato, 00:57

Here you go I have two more previews for The Dark Eye - Demonicon. If you missed my post from yesterday you can still watch a live twitch.tv stream also.

PanicGamer - "Quick Look: The Dark Eye: Demonicon"

I was invited to a press event showing off Kalypso’s newest offering in the action RPG genre, The Dark Eye: Demonicon. I was able to watch the dev team play the game and have them show off some important parts of the game and it’s gameplay.

For those not familiar with the The Dark Eye the best way to describe it is this. Know how Dungeons & Dragons is the top role playing game worldwide? Well in Germany The Dark Eye is the top role playing game and that is what The Dark Eye: Demonicon is based on.

United Front Gaming - "Kalypso Previewed The Dark Eye-Demonicon!"

I’m sure I’ve said it once before, but I’m saying it again anyway- one of the best things about my job is getting to talk with developers about their games. It’s always great to get some insight into their creative process. It’s even better when these chats are accompanied with gameplay footage of an upcoming title. Recently I had the opportunity to witness a preview of Kalypso Media’s The Dark Eye – Demonicon.  Featuring a dark fantasy world and interesting RPG elements, I couldn’t wait to see what Kalypso had in store for gamers!

Demonicon - Preview @ Saving Content

by Couchpotato, 00:36

I have another short preview of The Dark Eye - Demonicon this time from a site called  Saving Content. It's based on a live demo of the game with the developers.

On October 8th, Kalypso Media held an event with the press to take a look at The Dark Eye: Demonicon from developer, Noumena. This was a hands-off demo as they played the game for us and showed specific sections. The game was mostly referred to as Demonicon, as I will for the rest of the preview.

At the end, there was time for Q&A. I was able to get some in with the developer and presenter:

Q: Can you respec at any time, or are you locked in once you make your choices?

A: You can try a lot while you are in the character sheet. but once you have decided to save the settings, they will remain as they are.

Q: Are you able to save manually either by menu or quicksave, or is it by checkpoint only?

A: Story-related Checkpoints and manually saving are both possible.

Q: Is knowing “The Dark Eye” beneficial or required for being able to fully enjoy the game?

A: Knowing The Dark Eye is not necessary and the game gives you a lot of lore to discover the game world even more. TDE is VERY big with a dynamic history line.

In the 45 minutes or so that I saw of the game, it looks incredibly gorgeous, deep, challenging, lengthy, and full of minor to major choices to be made throughout the beautiful world. I’m looking forward to spending some time in Aventuria.

Demonicon - Preview @ IncGamers

by Couchpotato, 01:14

IncGamers has posted a new preview of Demonicon based on the pre-release Alpha, and a live Twitch.tv interview.

Peter: As you say, the rest looks fine. I was getting a bit worried when our host decided to introduce the game’s skill system by explaining there was a “haggle” ability you can dump points into (maaaybe open with something a little more compelling than beating a humble trader down on the price of a necklace,) but things got more interesting when he hinted at a trade-off between spending “gift points” and, well, staying human.

You see, our main fellow Cairon (Karen?) has a slight demon problem. The demon is happy to help him out with some super-amazing skills (and haggling) but in return will want bits of Cairon’s soul. There was a bit towards the end of the presentation where his face started to warp on certain dialogue choices, because he was going a bit too demon-ey. In fact … maybe that will perk up his voice acting, when he goes full demon?

Peter: Let’s mention the fighting, since that’s obviously a bit of a focus. We saw a bit of monster-bashing in a Monastery.

Tim: It certainly looks a lot more hack-and-slashy than, say, The Witcher; there was a lot of rolling back-and-forth to evade attacks. Bashing enemies with your basic attacks nets you Essence, which lets you use your demonic gifts to full effect – poison enemies, freeze them in place, let loose huge flaming novas, whatever.

There are four branches of gifts, each of which contains four spells, and each of these have various sub-points that affect that spell. Your fiery nova, for instance, can be further upgraded so that it does more damage or costs less Essence. So yeah, it looks like you can customise the way you fight.

Demonicon - Preview @ Pixel Perfect Gaming

by Couchpotato, 00:48

Pixel Perfect Gaming posted a new preview of Demonicon.

The combat system in Demonicon is action-based, but it requires a little bit of finesse – button mashing will not be rewarded. Racking up a perfect combo chain will grant additional demonic bonuses that will allow your character to inflict more damage.  The third-person camera shows the entire battlefield; there are no awkward camera angles to worry about.

The player can fully customize their character by choosing which skills, talents and weapons to use. Different weapons can have a dramatic affect on combat. Some weapons require more stamina than others, making combat that much harder. Heavier weapons like the sledgehammer require excessive amounts of stamina, eliminating the hacking/twitch-style method of gameplay seen in other games.

Additionally, the game includes an extensive crafting system where you can make items from alchemy and blacksmithing.

The decisions you make will shape your destiny in the world of Demonicon. And due to its morality system, there are multiple endings that add an enormous amount of replay value to the game. The main story alone for Demonicon is roughly around 30 to 35 hours of continuous gameplay, and this is not counting the additional side quests or the multiple endings.

Demonicon - Preview @ GamingLives

by Couchpotato, 00:55

GamingLives has posted a preview of The Dark Eye: Demonicon in advance of it's October 25th release. Here is what they have to say about the game.

Thankfully, you don’t really need to know anything about The Dark Eye to enjoy Demonicon. Set in the Shadowlands, which I’m told isn’t the usual realm for Dark Eye action to take place, Demonicon follows Cairon, an unfortunate soul whose life takes a turn for the worse in the opening part of the game (but more on that later) and just gets worse as he becomes embroiled in a war against the demons that inhabit the world. Story details are a little thin on the ground at the moment but, needless to say, it’s going to be your typical epic fantasy story, although with a darker, more mature edge.

The rest of the article might spoil the game so read at your own risk. I like the part at the end about consequences though.

With the cannibal defeated, I was given a pretty major decision to make – kill the cannibal, dooming his captives as he was the only one who knew how to get them out, or let him live, freeing the captives but also letting the cannibal off scot-free. Being young and naïve, I let the cannibal free, raising some eyebrows around the room as apparently I was in the minority of people who made that choice. But as a cutscene told me that not long after the cannibal had been set free, more people had disappeared and were presumed eaten, I realised my error. I was suitably impressed that what seemed like the obvious decision ended up being just as bad as the other, and cemented the idea that I really was just choosing between he lesser of two evils.

A little upset that I had caused more suffering, I packed up my things and left to go and have a long chat with myself about what I had done. Despite leaving me feeling more evil than a cannibal, The Dark Eye: Demonicon is a solid-looking action-RPG, which promises many more moral quandaries and fluid fights to appease fans of the genre. Keep a (dark) eye open for this when it comes out on PC on October 25th and consoles at some point next year.

by Couchpotato, 02:33

Kalypso Media has announced the release date for Demonicon on the PC for late October with the console versions arriving at some point in 2014.

Features include

  • A third-person action-RPG featuring brutal melee attack combos and dazzling magic spells
  • Powerful storytelling with an elaborate narrative rich with twists, as well as believable conflicts and ethical decision-making opportunities
  • Action-packed battles, where pin-point timing and clever tactics play important roles
  • Unique magic system: a dark talent grants the player devastating mystical powers
  • Important events in “Demonicon” will be part of “The Dark Eye” universe’s history

Thanks Incgamers.

Demonicon - Interview @ Toronto Thumbs

by Myrthos, 12:48

Toronto Thumbs interviewed Demonicon's content deisgner Daniel Hessler.

The characters in the game affect the state of the world they live in, according to the literature. How granular are the changes that occur on account of actions performed by the brother and sister?

The relationship between brother and sister is fundamental for the main quest. How they deal with the background of this relationship directly affects themselves, their family, the villains, and in the end, a whole church. So the changes will mainly occur in the way NPCs interact with Cairon and how he will react in return – in battles and quest structures, but naturally at most in dialogs.

Is there an ideal path through the game?

According to the decisions the player makes, the story will develop differently. We designed these different ways as an equilibrium, so the player won’t have any disadvantages concerning the game-play when choosing either one way or the other. On the other hand, each way has its moral pro’s and con’s: we avoided the stereotype of “good vs. evil”; NPCs will profit or suffer from the player’s decisions, and it is for the player to decide which way is the ideal one, since none will please all factions and each faction has their own motivation.

Demonicon - Preview @ Gameuber

by Myrthos, 18:09

Here is a recent preview of The Dark Eye: Demonicon available at Gameuber. It is a bit on the short side though.

The initial tutorial quest of a cannibal stealing villagers to dial up his magical power was still there, as was Cairon’s uncomfortable infatuation with his fiery redheaded sister, sending the character down a dark, dangerous path. A lot of Demonicon’s appeal is distilled into its dark fantasy setting, with the character’s downfall running parallel with a town which has yet to fall to evil pillaging forces in a grand, continent-wide war. If you aren’t familiar with The Dark Eye universe it seems to share a lot in common with Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings, only darker and more German…

Demonicon - Interview

by Couchpotato, 04:40

Mario Janiszewski the game designer of The Dark Eye: Demonicon  is interviewed by gamingnexus. I know I'm still interested in the game what about the reader?

Is Demonicon going to be class based?  Will we see the usual RPG tropes in the game or will it be a bit different?

We won't be class or party-based, rather, you, playing as Cairon, will be a one-man party. Carion, at his core, is more of a brawler, with lots of melee combos at his disposal, but you'll also unlock elements-based magical powers, which let you, for example, freeze enemies, launch flame bursts and the like. Along with that, we have a crafting system that you will use to make potions, ointments, balms, etc, which can heal you, hurt enemies (in the case of poisons) or even boost your weapons themselves. If you prefer a more "magical" path, you can focus on unlocking more attack-based magic with your earned XP, or you can focus on alchemy/crafting, or fighting. It's all up to you, but Cairon by default is pretty much a great mix of the archetypical cleric, mage, fighter and thief.

Could you walk us through the combat in the game?  How are you balancing the action with the RPG elements?

The RPG elements are there to boost your melee combos, and unlock magical combat abilities. As with most 3rd person games, combat is handled by simply moving around, and bashing things. To attack, you'll use the face buttons on the controller, while combinations of the triggers and sticks will allow you to dodge, roll and perform other cool actions.

What kind of tactics will players have to use in combat to get through the game?

The player starts with standard melee attacks, but needs to make use of his demonic and magic abilities later on in the game. There will be opponents resistant to physical damage or magical damage. Other enemies are weak against poison and if the player has raised his alchemy skills he might be able to poison his weapons to inflict additional damage.

Will there be any side quests in the game?  Do you have a rough idea of how long a play through will take on average?

We have several side quests besides the main quest. It will take at least 25 hours to get through the main quest.

Demonicon - Preview @ Electronic Theatre

by Myrthos, 12:40

Electronic Theatre previewed The Dark Eye: Demonicon and feel it is an exciting new RPG adventure.

The Dark Eye – Demonicon’s tale is a twisted story of betrayal and revenge. ‘Twisted’ being the operative word, as there’s a lot of suggestive content that could end up dividing audiences’ opinions of certain characters. Telling the tale of a brother and sister journeying together through a world of cruelty and depravity, both are constantly threatened by mortal danger and demonic temptation. Many videogames assert their ideals of player choice affecting the outcome of the experience, but in The Dark Eye – Demonicon it’s not a simple case of being good or bad; you have to decide where the lines are drawn.

Demonicon - Update from Dreieich-Convention

by Dhruin, 09:19

Alrik sends word of some Demonicon coverage from the Dreieich-Convention, which is apparently the second largest TDE convention in Germany.

The article covers all three TDE games currently in development, though we're really only interested in Demonicon. You can check out a Google translation here. The game is apparently due late 2012 and it seems The Witcher was suggested as a comparison if you'd like to place the gameplay.

Demonicon - Preview @ RPS

by Dhruin, 23:47

Alec Meer has a very late preview of Demonicon from Gamescom, having finally gotten around to writing about it and, unfortunately, not remembering a whole lot of detail:

Oh, and I established that there’ll be one big city you can always revisit to see how your decisions are affecting the world and its people. Plus, you’ll have a house there, where you might find gifts from fans or, distressingly, a “a cat nailed to the door as a threat from the enemies you have made.” I really don’t want to find dead cats at my house, thanks.

Demonicon - Main Character Unveiled

by Dhruin, 23:23

Well, we don't get The Dark Eye: Demonicon news all that often. After revealing some time back there won't be any character creation, the main character of Cairon has been unveiled with a couple of concept images at Worthplaying:

In his short 25 years, Cairon has bared witness to more horrors than most people endure in a lifetime. A life on the run through the Shadow Lands made him a fighter without compromise. As well as the deadly fighting skills learned from his father and surviving the tough streets, Cairon has mastered a fast fighting style using his arm-armour and sword.

Demonicon - Uses Vision Engine

by Dhruin, 11:28

Trinigy sent us the following press release announcing the use of their Vision engine (Arcania, Settlers 7, Stronghold 3) for Demonicon:

Germany’s Largest RPG Franchise Uses The Vision Game Engine

Trinigy’s Vision Game Engine to support the development of Kalypso Media’s The Dark Eye: Demonicon and other titles

Eningen, Germany – Apr 5, 2011 – Trinigy, an industry leading 3D game engine provider with offices in Germany, Austin, TX and Seoul, Korea, announced today that the global publisher Kalypso Media has licensed the Vision Game Engine for multiple upcoming titles across a range of platforms, including The Dark Eye: Demonicon for PC and Xbox360®. The Dark Eye title, which is being developed by Noumena Studios, is the latest game in Germany’s most successful role-playing series to date.

Since its launch in 1984, The Dark Eye franchise has become the most successful role-playing video game on the German market, outpacing all other role-playing games in sales. It is also become a highly successful pen and paper game, and the basis for the popular Realms of Arkania video game series. Kalypso Media purchased the IP in 2010, and opened Noumena Studios to develop a title that delivers the rich aesthetics and gameplay features RPG fans want, without sacrificing the very popular and time-proven RPG rules fans love.

Up until 2010, The Dark Eye series and Kalypso Media’s other titles have used internal game engine technology. Kalypso Media has now turned to Trinigy to take advantage of the Vision Game Engine’s mature feature set, cross-platform performance and modular architecture.

“It just made sense for us,” said Stefan Marcinek, Global Managing Director at Kalypso Media when speaking of the Vision Game Engine. “Trinigy and the Vision Game Engine gave us a single development platform with a strong feature set capable of achieving our exacting graphic and gameplay goals, optimized performance across a range of platforms and extremely responsive support. Just as importantly, the Vision Engine doesn’t tie us to a specific workflow – it is so flexible, we can adapt it to our development process with our own internal tools, not matter what platform or genre we are developing for.”

“Having grown up playing The Dark Eye games and the pen and paper versions of this franchise, it is a true joy to be working with Kalypso Media on The Dark Eye: Demonicon, as well as its other upcoming titles,” said Felix Roeken, general manager of Trinigy. “We look forward to supporting their talented teams as they bring their extremely popular games to life, and can’t wait to start seeing the results of our partnership.”

Demonicon - TDE (Re-) Licensed

by Dhruin, 21:19

Demonicon, the Das Schwarze Auge PG originally in development by Carsten Strehse' The Games Company and now with a new Kalypso studio, officially has The Dark Eye license re-attached to the project.  It was originally announced as a TDE game but after the collapse of The Games Company, the situation was unclear.  Alrik sent us the news a day or two back in German from PC Games.de but Blue's now has an English press release:

Kalypso Media and Chromatrix Sign ‘The Dark Eye’ License Agreement for Brand for Upcoming Action Role Playing Game

Kalypso Media and Chromatrix Sign ‘The Dark Eye’ License Agreement for Brand for Upcoming Action Role Playing Game

Bracknell, UK – 9th February 2011 - Kalypso Media and Chromatrix GmbH have signed a license agreement granting the video games publisher the use of The Dark Eye brand for their upcoming action role playing game DEMONICON. The game, scheduled for release in 2012, will be developed using the official rules of Europe’s biggest roleplaying world and will now be titled The Dark Eye – DEMONICON.

“By integrating the official The Dark Eye rules, DEMONICON becomes the must have title in the hearts and minds for the fans of The Dark Eye world and creates a new and exciting brand for fans of action role playing games to experience” Says Simon Hellwig, Global Managing Director, Kalypso Media Group.

Demonicon - Kalypso Buys IP & Founds New Studio

by Gorath, 12:14

A couple of days ago we reported that the development of Silver Style Entertainment's / TGC's RPG The Dark Eye: Demonicon has been secured despite TGC's insolvency because a top secret investor took over. Now the cat is out of the bag: Kalypso Media buys the Demonicon IP and some other stuff out of TGC's insolvency estate. More details can be found on GamesMarkt, for example (registration may be required).

Kalypso pursues quite an aggressive expansion strategy. Over the last few years they've bought the Jagged Alliance IP, pretty much the whole Ascaron back catalog (Patrician, Port Royal, Darkstar One) with the exception of Sacred, a small IP from Spellbound (Airline Tycoon) and now Demonicon, a browser game and the marketing rights for a couple of solid to good adventures (Simon the Sorcerer 5, Goin' Downtown, Everlight) from TGC. They've founded 3 internal studios and opened an office in the US.

The fact that Silver Style wasn't bought out while all remaining employees left probably spells the end for the studio. This means the German market lost no less than 3 of their oldest and most experienced studios within a bit more than a year. Sacred developer Ascaron (founded 1991) closed in July 2009. Then a few months ago Drakensang studio Radon Labs (founded 1995) went belly up. And now Silver Style (1993) will probably be liquidated with the TGC shell.

For once the story has a happy ending though:

Kalypso will found the Noumena Studios GmbH in Berlin to complete Demonicon. The remaining 17 Silver Style employees will find a new home there, and the staff ramped up to 35 until the end of the year.

And there is more. 4Players posted a few days ago that many other Silver Style developers opened a new studio, surprisingly named Silver Style Studios GmbH. The new company will concentrate on browser games. They plan to grow to 45 people this year.

A few months ago Bigpoint Berlin took over 30+ Radon Labs employees. They're also growing.

So the job market doesn't look too bad for game developers in Berlin now.

Thanks, Alrik.

Demonicon - Investor Found?

by Dhruin, 21:23

Alrik points to a post on the Demonicon forums from PR Manager Kabuto, who says an investor has been found and development has been secured.  The Google translation isn't very good and the investor is unnamed but it sounds like good news for fans of this TDE game.

Demonicon - Still in Development

by Gorath, 14:20

Demonicon - TGC Insolvent?

by Dhruin, 22:59

It seems Das Schwarze Auge developers are falling left, right and centre.  Alrik sends in this German article that claims Demonicon developer The Games Company is insolvent.  You may recall TGC was formed when Carsten Strehse merged Silver Style (The Fall) with another company.  We don't know what this means for Demonicon at this point.

Demonicon - Preview @ Games Radar

by Dhruin, 22:28

It's been a while since we heard about Demonicon, but this jaded, four-paragraph piece won't tell you much.  Games Radar has reprinted a brief look from Xbox World 360 UK:

There’s nothing new about the Oblivion-esque scenery and attempt to match its gameplay (although each quest you undertake will apparently have three distinct solutions and outcomes), and the makeup of your team will be instantly familiar to anyone who does overtime at their local Games Workshop – but the selling point here is that the hunky warrior, sly dwarf and brave archer lass who will be watching your back will all be controlled by up to eight flesh and blood gamers, and every dungeon you explore will be specifically tailored to teamwork, Left 4 Dead-style.

Demonicon - Preview @ XboxMessiah

by Dhruin, 20:12

XboxMessiah has a preview of Silver Style's Dark Eye game, Demonicon.  From the text, this looks like a hands-off articles culled from previous material:

The guys at Silver Style Entertainment, the in-house development studio of The Games Company, are placing an extra special emphasis on the games’  story as well as the development of a dynamic and cinematic combat system. Demonicon narrates an enthralling tale of murder, intrigue and dark power. On your quest you will battle dangerous monsters and meet unforgettable characters – madmen, saints, and the desperate. Often times you will have to choose who will be your friend and who will be your enemy – but you must choose wisely. The Black Lands do not forgive mistakes.

Demonicon - Release Date Update

by Gorath, 23:38

The new release date for Demonicon is H1/2011. Demonicon is a single character RPG - TGC insists it's not an action-RPG! - based on the 4th edition of the Dark Eye ruleset. It's developed by TGC's internal studio Silver Style for PC and XBox360.

Demonicon - Interview @ GameBanshee

by Dhruin, 00:20

Carsten Strehse from Silver Style/TGC has been interviewed at GameBanshee about their upcoming The Dark Eye game, Demonicon:

From what we've read, your plan is to present the player with difficult, plot-critical choices during the game. Can you give us an example or two and take us through what effects each choice will have on the rest of the game?

First of all, every quest will have at least three different solutions, and combat is not always the best or the easiest approach. Moral decisions will also play a great role in the game. For example: Will our hero form an alliance of convenience with a mad ruler? Such an alliance would yield valuable information, but in the long run, it could also hurt our hero’s reputation and alienate potential allies. Alternatively, he could seek help from a resistance movement, and the insane ruler would then relentlessly try to hunt him down. At the same time, though, the resistance could stir up a rebellion which would be of invaluable help to our hero in later quests. So there is no single correct way, but many different possibilities to develop a special relationship with the game world by making your own choices.

Demonicon - Diary #3 @ IGN

by Dhruin, 01:51

IGN has the third dev diary on Silver Style's TDE game, Demonicon, describing the position of project manager:

Welcome to the third part of the developer diary series for The Dark Eye: Demonicon. After the first two have dealt with finding a graphical style and story development, I want to go further into the area of what project management involves when developing a game like this one. We project managers don't design, paint or model objects in 3D. We don't make music, and certainly don't code, so we don't make a visible contribution. "Hey guys, what exactly are you doing there?" Whether that's a valid question or not, you will find our team's answer if you read on.

Demonicon - Diary #2 @ RPGVault

by Magerette, 17:20

RPGVault posts their second developer diary for Silver Style's upcoming title The Dark Eye:Demonicon, this one  on developing the story elements:

To prevent characters from becoming an array of stereotypes only, we wrote a proper biography for each one, with increasing detail according to their respective importance. NPCs have to be designed as if they were actual people, with their own desires, fears, strengths and weaknesses. Just like their real-life counterparts, they have their own goals and moral standards, and each one's personality is the result of the individual's background and experiences. From this, you can then deduce an outer appearance, so our concept artist was able to begin work on giving them their visual representations...

During the whole development process, all individual aspects of the story were fine-tuned to the particular conditions of Aventuria. The mentality of the characters, the individual suspense-creating elements, and the possible motives of the player character not only have to be consistent in themselves, but they have to fit into the world.

The article also includes two new screenshots and a piece of concept art.

Demonicon - Diary #1 @ RPG Vault

by Dhruin, 22:18

Silver Style's Stefan Hoffman pens a diary at RPG Vault on their upcoming The Dark Eye game, Demonicon.  This piece discusses the art style for the game but here's a general overview, since there is still some confusion over whether this is an action/RPG or not:

It is going to be an epic role-playing game with special emphasis on action-oriented combat. You can also expect to see multiplayer support and a highly detailed character generation process (the quick option to select one of many pre-generated archetypes will be available too). The extensive main storyline with many side quests will take your character through the darkest and most dangerous regions of Aventuria. These tasks will provide for a lot of variety... far from the old "kill this and fetch that" formula. In addition, many of them will have multiple solutions.

Demonicon - New Dark Eye Title Unveiled

by Dhruin, 11:46

Avantenor writes that a website has been launched for The Dark Eye: Demonicon, a new entry into the Das Schwarze Auge CRPG milieu.  He explains that the DSA license isn't exclusive (like D&D, for example) and Demonicon has no relationship with Drakensang other than the license.  In fact, this one is being developed by Silver Style (The Fall), now part of The Games Company.

The site describes it as an action/RPG (no direct quotes because of the Flash), although we're told Silver Style compare it to NWN2 with a more dynamic combat system.  Head over for a story synopsis, concept art, short feature list and (German) forums.
