In a market that’s almost saturated with Souls-like games, the developers at Neople have certainly worked hard in differentiating Khazan from the competition, alongside the effort to honor the legacy of Dungeon Fighter Online (also known as Dungeon & Fighter in Korea and other regions), which is one of the most successful mobile games ever.

You Are ABSOLUTELY NOT READY For The First Berserker Khazan

We get plenty of Soulslikes these days, which means it takes something really special for a game to stand out in a genre, if you’re not a FromSoftware game- something like Lies of P or Black Myth: Wukong.

Whether or not The First Berserker will similarly widely well received remains to be seen, but in all that we have seen of it so far, Neople and Nexon's action RPG has looked quite impressive. In particular, it's the game's promise of a hardcore action RPG experience that has turned so many heads.

From brutal combat and gruelling boss fights to its emphasis placed on progression and customization, there's plenty of promises that The First Berserker: Khazan has made in the lead-up to its release that genre fans should be excited about.

What’s up, fellow Soulslike and Action RPG fiends? If The First Berserker: Khazan is on your radar, Nexon and Neople have a surprise in store. After sinking time into the demo, I have to say—I’m pleasantly surprised. This game came out of nowhere, yet it delivers with its striking 3D cel-shaded visuals, enjoyable gameplay, and interesting mechanics such as gear sets with unique perks—something often missing in games like this.

But what really stands out? The game lets players choose their own pace, offering both an Easy and Normal mode. Huge props to Neople for this addition, especially in a genre notorious for its punishing difficulty.

Most importantly, the performance is solid. Given that demos often hint at a game’s final optimization, this one stands out. Honestly, the last time I was this impressed by a demo was Lies of P.

Of all the Soulslikes coming up on the horizon, few of them have captured attention like Neople and Nexon’s action RPG The First Berserker: Khazan, a grimdark take on the Dungeon and Fighter universe, and a game that has looked consistently promising with its pre-release showings. From the promise of crunching and challenging combat to its striking, stylized art tyle, to the strong impression it has made with pre-release previews, The First Berserker: Khazan has plenty going for it that makes it one of 2025’s more prominent releases. Recently, we had the chance to speak with its developers about its combat, approach to difficulty, level design, and more. You can read the full interview below.

The First Berserker: Khazan’s stylized art style is one of its most instantly eye-catching elements. How did you land on this look for the game?

As a longtime console game enthusiast, particularly in action RPGs, I have long envisioned a game with a style like Khazan’s. Since childhood, I’ve been a fan of this genre, and that passion deeply influenced my approach to developing this game. Our goal of evolving the Dungeon and Fighter (DNF) Universe and expanding it globally with a console launch inspired us to create a fresh new art style for the IP. While many hardcore action RPGs and Soulsborne games lean toward surreal, complex art with high-end design and graphics, we aim to bring an animated and anime-inspired style to Khazan. This choice stays true to the DNF aesthetic while also refreshing the look for Western audiences who may be less familiar with the universe. We aim to achieve a cinematic quality for Khazan that is often found in mature-audience animation, focusing on two primary elements: bold, gritty, and intense battle scenes, paired with high-quality cartoon rendering to immerse players in a dark, atmospheric setting. We also believed that this animation style would better express the ultimate combat feeling we pursue and the action scenes that Khazan unfolds. Through this approach, we hope to engage a global audience by delivering intense battles with detailed, cel-based animation.

The First Berserker: Khazan’s devs don’t think of the game as a soulslike, but rather a 3D successor to Dungeon Fighter Online for consoles 

The First Berserker: Khazan is a “hardcore” action RPG currently in development by Dungeon & Fighter developer Neople (owned by Nexon). The title’s grueling bosses and technical gameplay have been earning it comparisons to soulslike games, but its developers don’t think of it as belonging to the genre. 

Talking to GameWATCH in a recently published interview, Neople’s CEO Myung-Jin Yoon and Khazan’s creative director Junho Lee say that they don’t consider their upcoming game to be a soulslike. Although there may be similarities, Khazan is first and foremost a successor to Neople’s nearly 20-year-running RPG Dungeon Fighter Online. The developers consider it to be a “What if” project that transposes the essence of Dungeon Fighter Online into a full price, 3D console game.

Regardless of how you choose to classify them, "Hardcore Action RPGs" have quickly blossomed into a truly international genre - and Nexon and Neople's The First Berserker: Khazan is just the latest in a long line of them that have released in the past few years. We've known about it for a while, but we had our chance to finally go hands-on with the game during this year's Tokyo Game Show - and we're pretty happy with what we got to play.

Even after a few minutes holding the controller, I'm already looking forward to the next chance I have to go hands-on; The First Berserker nails the balance between having weighty animations, with responsive controls, and Khazan feels great in motion. Players can use light attacks and heavy attacks, with heavy attacks offering the ability for Khazan to charge them up to deal more damage to both poise and health; shielded enemies can easily deflect lighter attacks, meaning that players will have to endeavor to break their guard before they can make use of their faster light attack combo.

With the Souls series, FromSoftware has created a trend that isn't going to disappear anytime soon, as every developer seems intent on offering their own take on the formula, to varying results. Among the games inspired by the popular series by the Japanese studio is The First Berserker: Khazan by Neople, a game that is aiming at the upper echelon of Soulslikes, taking many of the lessons provided by the Souls series to heart to offer a well-crafted experience that has the potential of becoming one of the best ever seen to date.

During Gamescom 2024, I had the chance to try out The First Berserker: Khazan, playing through a 30-minute long demo that culminated with an intense boss battle. The demo started right from the beginning of the adventure when the disgraced military general Khazan, voiced by Ben Starr, the voice of Final Fantasy XVI protagonist Clive Rosfield, was released from the cage he was being transported in. Following his release, the long-haired warrior acquires a mysterious sword that had been calling out to him, filling him with the power required to make it out of the danger-filled snow mountain he is in. Sadly, this was all the story that was featured in the demo so it's hard to say where it will be going, but the personable character design definitely made these short sequences memorable enough.

Before Nexon would have one of its greatest breakthroughs in Western markets via this year's The First Descendant, the company would achieve considerable success with the Dungeon & Fighter franchise worldwide, including its myriad spin-offs like DNF Duel. Nexon subsidiary Neople, the studio behind the Dungeon & Fighter games, has continued to expand the DNF universe in a variety of different genre titles, one of which is the upcoming action RPG The First Berserker: Khazan. And while the general consensus around the title was that it was yet another Soulslike, there's enough at play in its mechanics to help it stand out from the growing crowd in the subgenre.

Game Rant recently sat down with the game's executive director (and Neople CEO) and creative director. While the developers behind Khazan acknowledged that the game has Soulslike elements, they were quick to point out that its lineage within the Dungeon & Fighter universe gives it just enough unique mechanics to where it straddles the line between being a Soulslike and a more traditional action RPG.

Neople and Nexon examine how Dungeon & Fighter drives the Lore and Origin of The First Berserker: Khazan

Developer Neople and publisher Nexon have new details for their upcoming hardcore action RPG The First Berserker: Khazan in a new blog entry that examines how the lore and origin fueling their upcoming title is linked to its parent game, Dungeon & Fighter (DNF).

In DNF, the story behind Berserker class that players can choose are Slayers that have succumbed to the "Khazan syndrome" that trades their sanity for newfound power. DNF has previously detailed how Khazan's rage stems from the murder of his close friend, Ozma, by the emperor of the Pell Los Empire.

With The First Berserker: Khazan, Neople and Nexon are utilizing the game as a way to "introduce new storylines and episodes that have not yet been explored in the source material." When designing the gameplay style of Khazan himself, the developers turned to the Neo: Berserker from DNF as an inspiration when thinking of how they wanted Khazan to embody the concept of a "primitive and powerful warrior."
