Lords of the Fallen - The parallel World of Umbral

by Hiddenx, 18:32

Executive producer and studio head Saul Gascon explains the parallel world of Umbral on Gamedeveloper:

Creating Lords of the Fallen's parallel world of Umbral

Hexworks studio head Saul Gascon discusses the process of building a parallel world that instills vulnerability.

A player character from Lords of the Fallen stares down creatures in a dark fantasy world.

Lords of the Fallen arguably wears its influences on its sleeve more overtly than most, though it would be unfair to say that this reboot of the 2014 game is merely following in the footsteps of the Dark Souls series. Besides its grim dark fantasy aesthetic, interconnected level design, and punishing combat encounters, its parallel worlds of Axiom and Umbral are unique.

On one hand, the idea of a change in the game state upon death has been inherent in FromSoftware’s games from the beginning. The studio introduced the world tendency system and the idea of the player character having human and soul forms in Demon’s Souls. Having similar consequences occur was something that Hexworks had wanted to introduce since the game’s inception, according to studio head and the game’s executive producer and studio head Saul Gascon.

“Our objective was to introduce innovation and add an intriguing dimension to the death loop, ensuring that when players faced defeat, something extraordinary would occur,” he explains. “However, initially, we grappled with uncertainty regarding what that 'something' should entail, prompting us to explore a plethora of possibilities.”

Rather than just a change of the player’s state upon death, Lords of the Fallen transforms the whole world as dying slips you from the land of the living to the land of the dead, featuring more hostile threats but sometimes new paths that were either not present or accessible before. More importantly, Umbral is actually running in parallel to Axiom simultaneously, such that when holding a special lantern, you can peer into the dark world.

Indeed, it was this mechanic that led the team realizing they could make something truly unique. “We subsequently reverse-engineered everything, building upon that core, yet astonishing, feature.”

Lords of the Fallen - Best Soulsborne of 2023 @ RPG Informer

by Hiddenx, 20:30

RPG Informer thinks that Lords of the Fallen is the best Soulsborne of 2023:

Why Lords of the Fallen Is The Best Soulsborne of 2023

The Soulsborne genre has become one of the most popular in the gaming industry, and each year, an unknown company likes to throw its hat into the ring for the chance to be the next Dark Souls. So many fall by the wayside in their attempts, with Steel Rising, Mortal Shell, and The Surge springing to mind, but still, companies try and try.

With Elden Ring releasing in 2022, the bar got set even higher for what this genre can provide, so for any Soulsborne that released in 2023, they had quite the act to follow. There were handfuls of contenders this year, and each of them had something unique to offer.

The top contenders for best of the bunch are Jedi: Survivor, Remnant 2, and Lies of P. Of those, Lies of P was the critical and commercial darling, while Remnant 2 stood out among the other two for being the most unique variant. Compared to Lords of the Fallen, though? Neither measures up, not in graphics design, not in tone, not in exploration, and not in combat. At least, in my humble opinion.

Lords of the Fallen - Review @ RPGamer

by Hiddenx, 16:28

RPGamer reviewed Lords of the Fallen:

Lords of the Fallen Review

Don’t Call It a Comeback

When the original Lords of the Fallen released in 2014, the action RPG space was a somewhat different sort of place than it is today. True, Dark Souls had already left its mark on the genre — in fact, Dark Souls II released the same year as Lords — but the Soulslike landscape was still in its infancy, with many important evolutions taking place over the next near-decade. This means the recent Lords of the Fallen reboot has far more to live up to than the original did. While it addresses many aspects lacking during the franchise’s first outing, the overall experience still misses the high-water mark it aims for, with a glut of gameplay systems and wonky mechanics rearing their ugly heads each time a measure of success is achieved elsewhere. It outpaces its predecessor in terms of quality, to be sure, but not enough to make for an emphatic recommendation.

[...]

Given the amount of time between Lords of the Fallen’s initial outing and its reboot, this new release feels far less like an attempt to right the ship and more like its own thing. This is a positive, as it certainly forges a strong identity of its own, and provides a robust amount of content to back it up. But much like its predecessor, it struggles to push past its self-imposed limitations, in this case revolving around its combat system and dual-world gimmick. With frustrating encounter designs and a need to fine-tune some aspects, the game veers from joyful to jarring and back again far too frequently to let a sense of fun be its main takeaway.

Lords of the Fallen - Free Content Roadmap

by Hiddenx, 18:02

Lords of the Fallen will get more free content in 2023:

Free Content Roadmap 2023

Greetings Lampbearers,

It’s safe to say, we’ve released a fair few updates since launch; many of which have been in direct response to your feedback, including reducing mob density, increasing boss difficulty, and restoring vestiges to NG+ mode. To that end, we’d like to take another opportunity to thank you for your ongoing interest and investment in our game, and reaffirm our commitment to further optimising and enhancing Lords of the Fallen with your help and support.

Today, in the spirit of collaboration, we are pleased to share with you our Content Plan for the remainder of 2023 (with continued support next year). As you can see, we have zero intention of slowing down our routine updates any time soon, as we continue to improve overall performance, stability, and optimisation.

[...]

Alongside these updates, we are planning a number of free events, similar to the ‘Season of the Bleak’ released at Halloween, which will add new questlines, content, armour sets, weapons, spells and more. This is our small way of saying thank you.

You’ll also note that we are already well underway developing the additional features that have also been directly requested by the community, including NG+ modifiers, inventory storage solutions, and split balancing for PVP and PVE going forward. While we can’t provide dates for these features right now, please know they are actively being worked on as we speak.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but rather a snapshot of our internal developments, in our continual strive for better transparency and communication with you, our faithful Lampbearers of Mournstead. We will continue to listen to your feedback. We will continue to act in a timely manner. And we will continue to enhance Lords of the Fallen.

In light, we walk.

Thanks Couchpotato!

Lords of the Fallen - Review @ RPGFan

by Hiddenx, 15:55

RPGFan checked out Lords of the Fallen:

Lords of the Fallen

Few games wear their inspiration on their sleeves quite as proudly as Lords of the Fallen. Creative director Cezar Virtuoso even went so far as to call the game “Dark Souls 4.5”. While it doesn’t quite hit the high marks of Miyazaki’s extensive catalog, Lords of the Fallen is nonetheless a valiant effort in the sea of soulslikes.

Anyone versed in FromSoftware’s library (or any of the millions of soulslikes that followed it) will immediately feel at home in Lords of the Fallen. Gritty third-person combat full of dodging, parrying, and posture-breaking, an esoteric world requiring players to do most of the heavy lifting to fill in the gaps, and of course, a healthy selection of bosses to test your mettle. Thankfully, Lords of the Fallen isn’t so brazen as to simply copy the formula without adding its own spin, but not without its share of blunders.

[...]

At the end of the day, Lords of the Fallen is a fun but oftentimes frustrating experience. The level design and combat adjustments are spot on, but extremely haphazard enemy placement and poor variety mar the experience. The game is beautiful yet dull to look at, with very few standouts in its grimdark landscape. It never quite manages to become more than the sum of its parts, but those parts had their fun moments all the same. I hope Hexworks can take everything they did right this time around and iterate further with their next release to make a truly stand-out soulslike title because the pieces for a home run are here in Lords of the Fallen.

Lords of the Fallen - Magic - HEXWORKS Dev Journals

by Hiddenx, 08:53

HEXWORKS posted a small Q&A on magic in Lords of the Fallen:

MAGIC - HEXWORKS DEV JOURNALS

Answering all things magic in Lords of the Fallen

Greetings, Lampbearers.
Gather round as we open our inaugural HEXWORKS Dev Journals, with this week focusing on the formidable magic that draws breath into this world of shadow and chaos. We have gathered your questions and presented them to Lucas Zanenga, our systems designer and leading scholar of all things Magic in Lords of the Fallen.

What is used to cast spells?
“All spells in Lords of the Fallen require the usage of a catalyst to bring forth their inherent abilities. Each catalyst you acquire is imbued with one of the three schools of magic either Rhogar, Radiant, or Umbral.”

“But the respective gods won’t allow you to use their magic for free. Besides mana, to channel infernal energy and blaze your enemies, you will also burn your own being. Align yourself with all that is holy with Radiant magic to smite heretics where they stand, but you must offer your own blood to Orious in return. Last, but most certainly not least, cross the boundaries of life and death with Umbral magic, with the risk of sacrificing your own body to frostbite.”

Can you increase your ability to cast spells?
“Yes. All spells have specific requirements in order to be cast. When leveling up, you are able to invest in either Radiance and/or Inferno to increase the spells you have access to, and also increase their power. Alongside this, when investing in those stats, you also increase your total mana pool, which allows you to cast even more spells. Rings and amulets are also available to grant an additional boost on any stat, which allows you to gain access to an even higher range of spells.”

“Note that Umbral, as it’s an ancient powerful magic that permeates everything in our world, will require you to upgrade both Inferno and Radiance at the same time in order to use its powerful magic.”

Are you able to use spells that bosses use?
“Yes, it is important for us that anything you can see in our game, you can use it yourself. This is why all bosses that you face will unlock their signature spell after being defeated, provided you acquire their unique lore item and gift it to the Bowl of Revelations...”

What are runes, and how can they be used?
“Runes are materialised elemental essences of the creatures that inhabit our world. They are rare drops from enemies, but if you use a Soulflay finisher on them, your chances of acquiring their essence (runes) are much higher. With these runes, you can empower your weapons and shields, if they’ve been upgraded previously to unlock their rune slots. Not all weapons can slot all runes, though, as each weapon's origin (lore) marks the shape of its sockets. We’ve gone quite creative with the rune effects and we are eager to see how players combine them in ways that offer unique effects.”

How many spells are in the game?
"We really wanted to offer players as many fantasies as possible within a dark fantasy RPG. These range from a Holy Warrior to a Heavy Axe-based pyromancer, from a heretic necromancer to a slithering assassin who uses poison as their main tool. To achieve this variety, we've created over 60 unique spells to aid you on your journey and allow you to express yourself through magic.”

Will there be a staff that can cast spells instead of a catalyst?
“The way our combat is designed, you don't need a staff to cast spells; your catalyst can be quickly accessed at any time by pressing a trigger (L2) to access your equipped spells and cast them over your foes. You can even do this in the middle of a combo, making magic an essential tool within combat, not just for casting from a distance. Note that there are plenty of weapons, including staves, that scale well with magic-related stats. So if you're specialising in magic, you'll want to get your hands on those”

Make sure to follow us as next week as we focus on the brutal combat you will face when exploring the lands of Mournstead.

In Light We Walk.

Thanks Redglyph!

Lords of the Fallen - Developer Interview

by Hiddenx, 16:54

Videogamer interviewed devs of Lords of the Fallen:

Lords of the Fallen devs speak on how action RPGs have changed over the last decade

It’s fair to say that Lords of the Fallen is an unusual sequel. Not only is it coming ten years after the original, but it’s not bothering to call itself the second, and there’s no expectation for players to have even be familiar the first.

In fact, if our recent hands-on preview is anything to go on, those new to the genre will have just as good a time as action RPG veterans. We spoke with the game’s creative director Cezar Virtosu and head of studio Saul Gascon, both of developer Hexworks, about the new Lords of the Fallen and how the game will reflect the changes in the genre since the original title’s release.

VG: The landscape of the action RPG genre has changed a lot in the last decade, how does the new Lords of the Fallen reflect that?

Saul Gascon: So I think that there… there are several factors, several key factors for us. The first one is that the industry has evolved a lot on from a technical perspective, right? What you can achieve today visually speaking is of a much higher level of fidelity than it used to be back then, that’s an obvious one. But that has a direct impact on the visuals that we can provide and that we want to provide. Then another that is also key is that the tactical action RPG genre has been expanded massively, especially thanks to Elden Ring and other products like Nioh and other games that are actually expanding the genre and get more audiences to come in.

How this impacts us is that we need to keep offering this challenging experience, but we also need to keep in mind that we need to make it more accessible. So, for people that are not that well-versed in the genre, they can have a smoother time, right?  This is not about making it easier at all – you saw it today! (Laughs) We still have our skill checks and our difficulty spikes but we do the increase smoothly rather than *poof* a wall, right? So it’s a smooth incline instead of just a wall. So the start of the game is a ‘Welcome to Lords of the Fallen’ right? So that wall comes a little later.

Cezar Virtosu: I think there’s also a bigger focus on immersion and depicting realistic, believable environments. And this was marshaled by many other big, big, big, big games and became like, sort of a norm for this third person action, immersive adventure genre. And I’m not talking about the polygons and pixels – although that’s very important. But even then (some of the) games are a bit more silly, they’re a bit less dramatic and now the genre has sort of crystallized and they still have very many, many, many serious bits. And there are many games that do not take things too seriously and even our game has  its more, like, light hearted moments. But the dark fantasy that we are trying tap into, that was one of the first mandates to make it a dark fantasy.

No, it’s not because we wanted a grimdark sort of edgy feel… though the edge is there and the edge is cool. But it’s no different than the difference between World of Warcraft and Game of Thrones.  They can be both highly emotional. Game of Thrones has this grime, this mud on the boots, these clothes stained with blood and…  when terrible things happen to relatable people, It is much more impactful. So this was our mandate – to ground the game not so much that it becomes boring or tedious – we don’t to be like the monsters in the sixth season… But we wanted to create a more compelling world to the environmental storytelling.

Lords of the Fallen - Best Starting Class

by Hiddenx, 16:46

IGN discusses the classes of Lords of the Fallen:

Lords of the Fallen: What Starting Class Should You Pick? | IGN First

Hexworks breaks down the starting class choices in Lords of the Fallen.

One of the most important decisions you'll make in any Soulslike is what to go with for your starting class. Ultimately, you'll be able to adjust your character to whatever build you want by levelling up your stats, but your starting class affects your playstyle where it often matters most: Right at the beginning of the game. It determines your starting stats, the weapon you'll likely use for the first few hours, the type of armor you'll wear, what kind of magic you'll wield, and what items you'll start the game with.

It's the kind of decision you'll want to make an informed choice about, so to that end, we asked Hexworks themselves to breakdown the starting classes of Lords of the Fallen and give some recommendations as to what classes might fit a particular player's style.

Lords of the Fallen 2 - New Dev: Will Start Over

by Silver, 08:51

@Eurogamer The new developers behind Lords of the Fallen 2 will start over but it will still be an action RPG.

"It's really a reset, it's a fresh start," Defiant Studios managing director David Grijns told me. "It's a new engine - Unreal 4 - and a new team. A team which does not have a long and illustrious background in action RPG development, but we actually see it as a strength."

The team's background is the open-world sandbox mayhem of Just Cause. Grijns and Defiant co-founder Roland Lesterlin, who's creative director, also co-founded Avalanche New York in 2011. There they shipped Just Cause 3 and began work on Just Cause 4, before leaving in 2016 to start something new.

Lords of the Fallen 2 - Not Coming Anytime Soon

by Myrthos, 09:31

Couchpotato sent us a link to a talk Eurogamer had with former GI Games member Tomasz Gop and Marek Tyminski, CEO of GI games, from which they learn that it might take quite some time before Lords of the Fallen 2 sees the light of day.

"There came a time when Sniper [Ghost Warrior 3] was the most important thing for CI, the next big hit. It also might have been the reason why Lords was not progressing as fast. Of course it's not uncommon knowledge that [SGW3] didn't go exactly according to plan, especially if it goes for sales. And here we are."

Clearly Lords of the Fallen 2 is not the 2017 game CI Games boss Marek Tyminski once told me it would be. But are the problems more severe than a delay? Has Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 derailed Lords of the Fallen 2 for good?

Speaking to me, Marek Tyminski clarified: "What we said about departing from triple-A: it means that we can really focus on the quality of our products, not thinking we have to match the scale of the major releases. From our standpoint it doesn't mean anything negative.

"It goes for the Lords of the Fallen sequel as well. It doesn't mean that we are not continuing with Lords of the Fallen - we definitely have that game in our plans and we definitely want to make this a great game. We're very serious about Lords of the Fallen the sequel. It's nothing like going halfway: this is definitely the quality way."

What CI Games meant by not chasing blockbuster scale was not getting carried away by open-worlds and the bottomless pit of work that goes into to filling and testing them - issues Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 fell well foul of.

Lords of the Fallen 2 - Tomasz Gop Leaves

by Gorath, 00:28

Executive producer Tomasz Gop leaves the Lords of the Fallen 2 project and is on the way out of CI Games, says Eurogamer. The publisher wants to go into a new direction with the game:

"We want to reach a wider audience for this game. That's why we're building a richer story. We're aware that these aspects could've been better in first game, so the story is a big point of the sequel, along with robust fighting system. We want to bring something fresh to RPG games."

Lords of the Fallen 2 - Coming in 2017

by Gorath, 17:27

Eurogamer asked CI Games about Lords of the Fallen 2:

Lords of the Fallen 2 won't be released until 2017, and German developer Deck 13 - co-developer of the original - will not be involved.

CI Games boss Marek Tyminski also told me at Digital Dragons in Poland that sales of Lords of the Fallen 1 had passed 900,000.

"It's doing fine," he said of the original game, which launched in October 2014. "We are over 900,000 units. Not yet 1m but we are approaching that. And definitely it's a good start for the new IP. Definitely we can say that Lords of the Fallen 1 proved the IP made sense."

A sequel has already been confirmed, and will be developed in the same way as the first - with the one notable exception: no Deck 13.

 Thanks Couch!

Lords of the Fallen 2 - Contract Canceled

by Gorath, 22:20

Eurogamer.de informs that the Polish publisher and developer CI Games terminated their contract with German developer Deck 13. Part of this contract from late 2011 was creating Lords of the Fallen.

The official reason is "inadequate execution" of the contract. Take this with a grain of salt because it has been translated two times.

Lords of the Fallen 2 will now be developed internally with the help of external partners. Planned release is in 2017. For 2015 CI Games is working on a F2P Lords of the Fallen on mobile devices.
