Review: The Outer Worlds 2 will fill the Fallout New Vegas-sized hole in your heart
The Outer Worlds 2 sees Obsidian Entertainment expand on its original sci-fi RPG.
After wowing players with the now-beloved middle child of the Fallout franchise, Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian Entertainment first attempted to replicate its success in the third-person action-RPG genre with The Outer Worlds in 2019. The sci-fi game quickly garnered praise for its satirical themes and RPG-heavy gameplay, even if it felt a little too limited in scale to be compared to Fallout: New Vegas in a positive light.
The Outer Worlds 2 changes that. This is a full-fat sequel to a now-pivotal sci-fi IP under Obsidian’s belt, with even more jokes to let fly about capitalism and bureaucracy, and a much larger world to explore. While not all of its bigger-is-better attempts to expand upon the original game work out, this is an ambitious sequel that will whet the appetites of RPG fans looking for a campy space adventure.
[...]
Verdict:
While The Outer Worlds 2 may disappoint with a poor selection of companions and unremarkable gunplay, the level of agency it gives players in influencing the fate of its world and characters is worth a playthrough on its own. There’s a wide swathe of choices players have to make throughout the course of this story campaign, and it’s genuinely impressive how far-reaching their consequences can become even towards the endgame.
The game’s writing and humour helps make some of its darker elements more palatable, though its story becomes most compelling when it drops the irony altogether. It’s clear that Obsidian isn’t going to return to the world of Fallout anytime soon, and that’s okay. The Outer Worlds is proving to be a more than worthy successor, if only spiritually.

The Outer Worlds 2 Review – More Than a Sequel
Let me start by saying that, despite my love for many games Obsidian Entertainment has created, The Outer Worlds was one of the few that made me feel conflicted. The story, high-quality dialogues, and RPG elements were there, but the gameplay didn’t hook me until Murder on Eridanos launched. Still, I was extremely excited to see we’d get a sequel to this game. After playing The Outer Worlds 2, I can confidently say that it is not just a follow-up game with much better gameplay, deeper role-playing systems, and meaningful dialogue choices. It is the quintessential sci-fi RPG of the year.

The Outer Worlds 2 - Space-Faring Capitalism
Gameinformer checked out The Outer Worlds 2:
The Outer Worlds 2 And Capitalism: 'People Who Have Power Tend To Abuse The People Who Don't'
When The Outer Worlds launched back in 2019, it features humorous but often sharp writing highlighting the pitfalls of capitalistic ideals and the way markets interact with leaders in power. The Outer Worlds 2 promises even more of that, with a new governing trio fighting for control of the colony of Arcadia, and your Earth Directorate hero somehow in the center of it all.
With The Outer Worlds 2 launching on October 29 (or as early as Thursday if you buy the more expensive Premium Edition), we spoke to developer Obsidian Entertainment to learn more about how the team tackled its second bout with space-faring capitalism and whether or not real life plays a role in how it crafts its messages.
"Unfortunately, those things haven't fixed [themselves]. I'm shocked," creative director Leonard Boyarsky sarcastically tells Game Informer when asked about capitalism's role in The Outer Worlds 2. "These are kind of unfortunately timeless themes that we have to deal with, and we kind of always deal with it in our games. We've always been involved in themes of power and balance, and it has to do with people having power and what they're going to do with that power, and it's generally not good for the people who don't have power, whether it's the Protectorate, who is full authoritarian and makes no bones about being a complete dictatorship [or] it's Auntie's Choice, which is trying to find this better way of spinning things so you feel like you're working for yourself [...] but you're still basically just helping them out."

The Outer Worlds 2: 8 Fun Facts About Its First Biome, Paradise Island
As part of our cover story for The Outer Worlds 2, we were treated to an exclusive demo of the game’s first open-world area: Paradise Island. This idyllic destination is located on a moon called Eden, and while it may sound lovely, it’s embroiled in a three-way conflict between the game’s primary factions: The authoritarian Protectorate, the ruthlessly capitalist Auntie’s Choice, and the scientific church that is the Order of the Ascendant.
Following The Outer Worlds 2’s prologue chapter, this is where players become truly acclimated with the game’s new and improved systems in an open-world setting. After exploring Paradise for a couple of hours and speaking to the developers about their approach to creating it, here are some of the most interesting facts we learned about this destination. The Bridge Mission Is The First Centerpiece Of Branching Mission Design
Shortly after arriving at Paradise Island, you’re tasked with infiltrating a Protectorate base housing a towering transmitter called the Vox Relay. There’s only one big problem: The facility sits on the other side of a chasm, and is accessible only by crossing a heavily guarded drawbridge. This mission offers the first big example of The Outer Worlds 2’s larger emphasis on branching mission design and player choice. A Protectorate guard may let you pass in exchange for hunting down two traitors to their organization. You can explore the surrounding area for any hidden pathways behind enemy lines.
Fellow editor Wesley LeBlanc, who played the same demo alongside me, somehow managed to obtain jump boots that allow him to leap and boost over a secondary entrance shrouded in a deadly gas called Zyrainium, bypassing the bridge completely. Helping a nearby forward operating base may net you some well-armed backup to storm the bridge head-on. You may even choose to sell out an ally in exchange for passage. And before you ask, no, you can’t just fly your ship across the bridge because the airspace is riddled with floating mines.
As design director Matt Singh explains, “[Game director Brandon Adler] in particular really wanted that bridge experience to exemplify 'How can we get as many different choices, different ways that the player can get across this objective, specifically' in the game?” Obsidian states there are upwards of six fully supported methods for completing this mission, and that’s not including more creative solutions you could concoct on your own. Paradise Island’s Vox Relay mission offers the first of what Obsidian promises will be multiple missions throughout the game featuring this high level of variance and flexibility.

As The Outer Worlds 2 embraces "crunchy" role-playing, its directors say people are "more open" to deeper RPGs after Baldur's Gate 3: "It's good to bring that stuff to the forefront again"
Big Preview | Obsidian is making the game it originally wanted The Outer Worlds to be, and returning to the studio's roots while doing it
Even six years out from its launch, there are few AAA RPGs as tightly-crafted and – as our The Outer Worlds review put it – "contained" as 2019's The Outer Worlds. Across its 25-30 hour runtime, Obsidian Entertainment landed with a story to tell, delivered it with the dry wit we've long come to expect from the studio, and hopped back in its rocket before overstaying its welcome. The Outer Worlds 2, then, is Obsidian coming back for a far longer round two.
Set to be a significantly expanded sequel with far more emphasis on optional exploration and quests, game director Brandon Adler tells me the "core" story of The Outer Worlds 2 represents "maybe 10-15%" of the game's whole. It's in direct response to fans who wished the first game was longer – yet it also marks a return to the deeper RPG systems that Obsidian is known for.
It's not like Obsidian didn't want to do this from the get-go. As work on the sequel began, Adler recalls the first game's directors, Fallout co-creators Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain, telling him of the "deeper RPG" systems and areas for improvement they would have chased if time and money had permitted.

The Outer Worlds 2 - Respeccing not allowed
RPG Site reports that respeccing is not allowed in The Outer Worlds 2, because your player choices are permanent:
“Not every game is for every single person. Sometimes you have to pick a lane” - The Outer Worlds 2’s director on meaningful role-playing consequence and banning respec
On RPG Site, we have an unofficial motto. ‘Everything is an RPG nowadays’. Our tongue is firmly planted in our cheek when I say it, but to some degree it’s sort of true - various RPG mechanics have enjoyed a parasitic spread into every genre you can think of, from EXP in shooters to skill trees in brawlers.
But then you have the real RPGs. You know the sort of stuff I’m talking about. Crunchy, deep, systems-driven. For the sickos out there, many of whom religiously visit this website. And in The Outer Worlds 2, the genre veterans at Obsidian seem absolutely determined to do one thing - double down on those sorts of systems.
The role-playing charge is led by an unflinching focus on choice and consequence - with as heavy an emphasis on the repercussions as the player agency. We’re not just talking about a branching narrative here, but also in systems - best indicated by the game’s dedication to a wild and wonderful suite of perks. In a hands-on demo, I spend a significant amount of time just scrolling the perks list - which is plentiful, many of them also surprisingly impactful.
[...]
“We don't allow respec. The reason is... so,” Adler begins, grinning. There’s a deep intake of breath. Can of worms: Opened.“Lots of people love respec,” he diplomatically notes. “And that is definitely one way you can go about things. I personally want the player to understand their choices are permanent - they matter - and then they think more about their choices.
“There's a lot of times where you'll see games where they allow infinite respec, and at that point I'm not really role-playing a character, because I'm jumping between -- well my guy is a really great assassin that snipes from long range, and then oh, y'know, now I'm going to be a speech person, then respec again, and it's like–”

The Outer Worlds 2 - Darker Tone
PC Gamer reports that The Outer Worlds 2 will be darker than the first part:
The Outer Worlds 2 game director says its writing has a 'less silly, darker tone' than the first game
People aren't always bad in silly ways. Sometimes they're just bad.
In our Outer Worlds review back in 2019, we called Obsidian's sci-fi satire "a quirky romp across a solar system ruled by brutal corporations," but the zany ribbing about the excesses of corporate misconduct didn't land for everyone living in the world where the delivery drivers of major companies are pressured to pee in bottles to be able to make their quotas. In The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian says that—while there'll still be plenty of humor—the writing will have a darker weight behind it.
In an interview with PC Gamer during SGF 2025, The Outer Worlds 2 game director Brandon Adler said that the first game's writing "could sometimes be one note," and that he wants the sequel to be able to hit more beats than just goofery.

The Outer Worlds 2 Feels Like Obsidian’s Answer to Starfield
Summary
- The Outer Worlds 2 is expanding its world to be twice as large as its predecessor.
- It will feature over 90 unique perks for character customization, surpassing Starfield's 82 skills.
- The game sets itself apart with self-aware humor that mocks industry norms and offers more deliberate gameplay.
Despite some of their most obvious differences, Starfield and The Outer Worlds have been frequently compared to one another, as they are both narrative-driven, first-person sci-fi RPGs developed by studios renowned for their storytelling — Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment, respectively. In some ways, this makes the comparisons between the two justifiable. However, their clear differences — like Starfield's larger scale, The Outer Worlds' tightly woven narrative, and each title's unique approach to gameplay — are difficult to ignore. Nevertheless, it already seems like The Outer Worlds 2 might be Obsidian's answer to Starfield, whether the comparisons have been warranted or not.
Based on what has been revealed so far for The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian's long-awaited sequel looks to capitalize on the success of its predecessor by remaining faithful to its origins. At the same time, it appears to be making some major improvements to its gameplay, progression, and worldbuilding that could put the Starfield comparisons to rest by finding a happy medium between what the first Outer Worlds accomplished and the groundwork laid by Bethesda's sci-fi adventure.

The Outer Worlds 2 - Big Year for Obsidian
2025 could be a big year for Obsidian, says PC Gamer:
Obsidian is about to make it a monster year for RPGs, with The Outer Worlds 2 coming later in 2025 after Avowed
Begin and end the year with a huge Obsidian RPG.
In a trailer at this year's Game Awards, Obsidian not only showed off the first gameplay footage of The Outer Worlds 2, it also revealed that the game will release sometime in 2025, meaning that the studio now has two full-fat RPGs coming in the next 12 months given that Avowed drops in February.
The trailer begins with a great gag about Obsidian getting its start making (in my opinion even better) sequels to other studios' great RPGs: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and "Fallout 3 (part 2)," aka Fallout: New Vegas. We didn't get a ton of specifics, but the trailer did assert that The Outer Worlds 2 will be "twice as big" even though development took "three times as long."

The Outer Worlds 2 - 5 Ways It Can Improve From the Original
Gaming Instincts share their opinion on how The Outer Worlds 2 can be better than the first iteration.
We all knew that The Outer Worlds would be coming, but it was still exciting to see it officially announced during the Xbox and Bethesda showcase. A brief CGI trailer showcased the game even though Obsidian Entertainment hasn’t finished the character design, plotline, or gameplay. Clearly, Obsidian Entertainment has a lot of work to do, but they have a solid foundation to build on. The space-faring adventures of the original excelled in well-scripted albeit humorous dialogue, and the sequel can capitalize on those strengths while improving some of its less desirable aspects.
loading...5. Combat and Gunplay
The dialogue, characters, and story of The Outer Worlds were superior to every other feature. Thus, shooting legions of Mauraders became tedious and mundane, getting in the way of more exciting elements. Despite being serviceable, combat was merely a glorified padding system or detour between stories beats. As the game progresses, its clunky and mediocre nature becomes ever more apparent.
To be successful, the sequel needs to upgrade its shooting mechanics to the level of its other more satisfactory qualities. Along with a general refinement, The Outer Worlds 2 would benefit from a greater variety of weapons and enemies. This should elevate combat from a mundane chore to a welcoming aspect of player and story progression.
In addition to gunplay, the stealth and melee mechanics are in a dire need of revamping. Though players can dedicate skill points to these specific character types, the insufficient gameplay functionality makes it a non-option. Because of the clunky melee and the finicky stealth, it’s more fun to invest time in dialogue, giving players an opportunity to avoid combat entirely. The Outer Worlds 2 needs to enhance combat so that players can truly choose their playstyle instead of being pigeonholed by quality.
