The Waylanders - Review @ GiN

by Hiddenx, 16:18

GiN checked out the time-travelling RPG The Waylanders:

The Waylanders Merges Celtic Lore with Time Traveling for RPGers

Roleplaying games never really ever go out of style. I am not sure if they have ever been the most popular genre of game, but they are always in the top five. Lately, they have really been surging in popularity. We have seen a lot of really high-quality offerings. Those include the Pillars of Eternity series, the Pathfinder games including Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, the underappreciated Solasta, and powerhouse big budget games like Baldur’s Gate 3. There are even quite a few indie games like Citizen Sleeper, King Arthur: Knight’s Tale and Fabled Lands trying to make their mark.

My point is that there are a lot of role-playing games out there these days. So, it’s not easy for a developer, especially an indie one working with a smaller studio and budget, to create a game that can make a big splash. But that is just what Spanish developer Gato Studio is attempting to do with The Waylanders. For an indie studio, they are really trying to do a lot with their game beyond a cookie cutter RPG format. If everything had gone perfectly, then The Waylanders might have become an instant classic. Unfortunately, it’s fairly obvious that it struggles in places. However, even with a clear lack of polish, gamers can still get a lot of RPGing fun out of this game.

[...]

I had fun playing The Waylanders. There are so many good things that the game does that it’s easy to overlook its considerable flaws and the occasional bug that has not yet been quashed. It’s clear that the developers are trying to punch above their weight with this one, but they do land a few blows regardless, which is impressive. If you are looking for a unique RPG in an increasingly crowded field, you really can’t go wrong by giving The Waylanders a try.

The Waylanders - Review @ MMORPG

by Hiddenx, 15:23

MMORPG has reviewed The Waylanders:

The RPG Files: The Waylanders Review

Sometimes less is more

Hooks. With so many choices to pick from these days, a game has to have a hook to draw in and keep players. That’s not so hard if your game is in a niche market; if you're trying to make a name for yourself in a market already full of AAA titles, well, it's a little more complicated. It takes a solid concept and flawless execution to make it these days. A little luck doesn't hurt either. And, of course, you need a hook. At first glance, The Waylanders, a party-based RPG developed by GATO Studio and released on February 2, 2022, is full of hooks. Unfortunately, no matter how many times The Waylanders has you nibbling at the bait, it fails to pull you in hook, line, and sinker. I’ll explain why in our The Waylanders review.

[...]

Final Thoughts

Everything about my experience points to GATO Studio either running out of time or money (or both) before they could complete The Waylanders. A story that starts off in a fresh setting and filled with interesting characters, nice visuals and outstanding voice acting is quickly derailed by technical flaws and an ever-growing list of bugs. I rarely complain about too many side missions or additional features like romantic endeavors being added to a game, but this is a perfect example where cutting out unnecessary features would have allowed GATO Studios to focus on the things that really mattered. Sometimes, less can be more, and that appears to be the case here.

The Waylanders - Review @ HPP

by Hiddenx, 17:02

Hey Poor Player checked out The Waylanders:

The Waylanders Review: more tactical, less RPG

When King Ith and his party landed on the Tuatha de Danaan’s shores, they expected to greet their gods as emissaries between the immortals and the insignificant. Their opulent vessels bearing lavish gifts to present to their makers, the mortals were stunned to discover that the land of their deities was seemingly devoid of any hallowed signs. Determined to fulfill their sacred mission, the regal party disembarked, certain that the Tuatha de Danaan must be hiding behind a knoll or perhaps a really tall shrub; instead, they found not only fierce enemies that would block their path forward, but something far more sinister than they could ever imagine.

[...]

Underneath the intriguing concept and gorgeous graphics, The Waylanders has a somewhat meaty tactical experience wrapped around the bare bones of an RPG. And while it may be light on the actual role-playing elements, there’s enough of a unique spin in terms of story, setting, and battle system that those who prefer mechanics above anything else might have a good time. This is by no means Baldur’s Gate nor Dragon’s Age: like King Ith’s Tuatha de Danaan, those gods aren’t here. I can recommend The Waylanders, but only if expectations are managed accordingly.

The Waylanders - Review @ Wccf Tech

by Redglyph, 16:01

Wccf Tech reviewed The Waylanders, which releases tomorrow.

The Waylanders Review – Harsh is the Life of a Celtic Warrior

Over the years, role-playing games have explored a lot of different settings ranging from the typical high-fantasy, D&D-inspired settings to sci-fi settings, but very few games have explored Celtic myths and lore. It's surprising, given that Celtic culture is extremely rich and well-suited for a video game setting, like the much more popular ancient Norse culture.

Being among the few games featuring a Celtic setting, The Waylanders definitely stands out from the competition in that regard. The fact that some of the story and gameplay mechanics are built around it could have elevated the game further if it wasn't for the shoddy execution and a severe lack of polish.

[...]

With its unique setting and interesting story mechanics powered by time-traveling, great sense of scale, and nice visuals, The Waylanders had the potential to be a remarkable role-playing game. The uneven pacing of the story, writing with wild quality shifts, the rather run-of-the-mill combat, the clunky interface, and a general lack of polish, however, make the game often frustrating to play, preventing it from reaching the heights it could have achieved.

Score: 6/10

Pros

  • Unique Celtic setting with nicely developed lore
  • Personable characters
  • Interesting time-traveling story mechanics
  • Nice visuals and sense of scale
  • Plenty of customization options...

Cons:

  • ... that can be a little difficult to take full advantage of, due to the lack of in-depth tutorials
  • Clunky interface, with horrible controller support
  • Unexciting combat
  • General lack of polish that makes completing the simplest of actions frustrating

The Waylanders - Close to Launch

by Hiddenx, 15:36

The party-based RPG The Waylanders will leave Early Access soon:

January Update - Launch is Nearly Here!

Hi everyone!

Happy New Year! In under a month, you’ll be jumping into the full release of The Waylanders and we can’t wait to see how you like the continuation of the story.

Stepping forward a thousand years has absolutely changed the land and the people who inhabit it. Villages have become forts and castles, stone roads have replaced dirt trails, and creatures of magic have gone into hiding. Your companions will change too. Rediscover mortals reborn and seek out immortal friends who have traveled the thousand year road the hard way.

With advances in crafting, the medieval period holds a whole host of new weapons, armor, and other items to discover and outfit your party with. There’s a lot coming for you to discover!

Now, on to a few things ahead of launch.

All That Glitters is Morian Gold

At full release, The Waylanders will increase in price from $34.99 USD to $39.99 USD. This increase will vary from region to region and serves to reflect the extra content available.

To offset this increase for RPG fans who haven’t yet jumped in to The Waylanders (and don’t read our community posts) during Early Access, we plan to have the game discounted by 10% for 2 weeks after launch. Beyond that launch discount, you’ll see The Waylanders in future Steam sales.

We truly appreciate the support of everyone who played during Early Access, especially those who gave feedback or let us know about a bug. Thank you all so much!

That Which Was Written Will Be Lost

Unfortunately Early Access save files will not work correctly in the launch build. We know all you Early Access players have put a lot of time into your characters and we’ve looked into many possibilities in how to address this, but we are a small team and have not been able to find a feasible way to make old saves work well.

While you can make copies of your old save files and place them in the save directory, we don’t advise this as doing so can create potentially game breaking bugs in later areas.

The Story Is Over, But The Work Continues

No story DLC is currently planned for The Waylanders. After launch, we plan to continue work on The Waylanders, fixing bugs and addressing community feedback that we hear here in the Steam Community, on social media, and in Discord. Watch for updates after launch with fixes, tweaks, and maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe a few extra quests we’d like to add.

Music for the Ages

At launch, The Waylanders soundtrack will be made available for purchase so The Waylanders fans can have a taste of Inon Zur’s magic whenever they wish. The soundtrack will have 26 tracks totalling approximately 48 minutes long

We’ll have more details up on the soundtrack’s Steam page which will go live at launch.

Distant Digital Lands

While PC has always been our focus for The Waylanders, we’ve had a lot of requests to have The Waylanders reach other platforms. This is something we’re looking into, but for now we want to focus on ensuring our fans who have committed to the journey on PC have the best experience we can craft.

That’s all from us for now. We’ll have a little more to share before launch, but will largely be focused on polishing The Waylanders for release. Again, thank you all for being along for this journey!

The Waylanders - Delayed to Feb 2nd, 2022

by Redglyph, 16:19

Gato Studio announced that the release date of The Waylanders was pushed back. In June, the game had already been delayed to Fall 2021.

New release date: February 2, 2022

Dear The Waylanders fans,

We’ve made the decision to delay the launch of The Waylanders to February 2, 2022.

Releasing this month as we’d planned would not provide the quality experience our fans deserve. While we have been working hard to get all our backers and Early Access players the RPG they’d been hoping for before the holidays, we’ve done an internal review pass on The Waylanders and our team needs more time to polish the game.

Developing during Covid has been challenging for many teams, including ours, and rushing The Waylanders out the door after nearly four years of development will not make anyone happy.

To help tide players over until the new release date, The Waylanders Early Access build will receive new updates, improving several currently available areas of the game, such as The Cave of Eternity and the Fomorian World in The Corrupted Cove. The update will also add remaining text localization for multiple Celtic era quests and fix community reported bugs.

The Waylanders will have over two hours of cinematics and more than thirty hours of gameplay, and we want to provide the best possible version of this story to all of you.

Thanks for your invaluable support and patience.

The Waylanders - Romancing

by Myrthos, 08:11

Romancing is going to be a thing in The Waylanders, which is scheduled to be released on November 16th.

loading...

Fresh off the announcement of The Waylanders' Launch date, Gato Salvaje Studio is releasing the last of their planned Summer updates for their Celtic real-time with pause RPG.

A Coruña, Spain — September 1, 2021 — Romance has come to The Waylanders! The RPG community has demanded their favorite characters be DTF (Down to... Formation?) and with this update, players can now choose to pursue one of ten different romances with ten of the characters who appear through the game.

Will you get horizontal with the himbo Heraklios? Be seduced by the golden tongued Nazhedja? Or dance on the edge of Mal's sharp wit and sharper knives? Amergin, Berath, Delba, Heraklios, Brigg, Khaldun, Mal, Nazhedja, Lugaid, and Tiana can now be pursued romantically in The Waylanders.

These relationships range from fun flings to serious relationships to less physical connections and everything in between. Of course Early Access players will only be able to see the Act 1 portion of each romance, with more content coming after the game launches with the Medieval era included. Find out this November just how a romance in the past blooms into something new a thousand years in the future.

Along with the added romances, the Gato Salvaje team is adding more than 60 achievements, 50+ new 50 new weapons and armor, and additional lore entries in the codex for characters, locations, story, and more. The update will also include bug fixes for community reported issues and general polish improvements throughout the game.

The Waylanders - Delayed to Fall 2021

by Myrthos, 14:04

In a roadmap for The Waylanders, it is made clear that the game will not be released in the summer, butt in the fall of this year.

Gato Salvaje Studio Shares New The Waylanders Roadmap in Latest Update. Game Delayed to Fall 2021.

Latest The Waylanders update from Gato Salvaje Studio adds full controller support alongside gameplay and UI improvements

A Coruña, Spain — June 4, 2021 — Gato Salvaje Studio has released the latest update to their Early Access Celtic RPG, The Waylanders. Bringing full controller support, difficulty options, improvements to combat and UI, as well as a selection of new NPC combat barks and lighting improvements throughout many scenarios and cutscenes, this update brings The Waylanders crucial steps forward to release. This first summer update rolls out to Early Access players on both Steam and Games in Development players on GOG.

A full list of changes is available on The Waylanders Steam Community forum.

"We got a little quiet during development over the Spring and I'd like to apologize to the community for that" said Gato Salvaje Co-Founder  Fernando Prieto "We've been hard at work improving The Waylanders content that players have access to using community feedback and building the next portion of the story. You'll be hearing more from us on social media and in our Discord in the coming months."

The Waylanders Team has also shared a roadmap update showing what fans can expect to see added to Early Access over the course of the summer, as well as the game's new targeted release in Fall 2021.

"Development during Covid has been very challenging, an issue many indie developers have been experiencing over the past year." continued Prieto "We've had to revamp many of our processes and change up how we work with people outside of the studio, such as our voice actors. We've solved many of these challenges and we feel confident that RPG fans will see the full version of The Waylanders released this Fall."

In addition to game improvements and bug fixes, The Waylanders summer updates will also include more pets for the Ranger class, an improved tutorial system, and the much-asked-for romance system. The team will have more to share about each of these in the coming months.

See the full The Waylanders roadmap here.

The Waylanders - Preview

by Silver, 01:13

Hey Poor Player have a preview for The Waylanders.

When it comes to combat, The Waylanders mixes a more “traditional” RPG style with tactical elements in a delightfully simple way. Players can usually Leeroy Jenkins their way through most of the battles, which will work when there aren’t too many enemies on the field. If the enemies outnumber the group, it’s often best to get in formation and fight as a single unit, coordinating movements with the others to overpower enemies. One interesting aspect of battle is the tactical pause, which can be toggled on and off at will. This will allow players to inspect the battlefield from all angles and set up actions all party members will then perform immediately after unpausing. This can be incredibly useful if a party member is seconds away from death, allowing you to take your time switching over to your healer and casting a sorely needed healing spell on the near-death member.

After going through both journalist and player reviews written at the beginning of The Waylanders’ Early Access period and comparing it with my own experience, it’s clear that much has progressed in terms of development. The easiest change to recognize is in the voice acting and mouth animation, as cutscenes are now more fully fleshed out. It appears that the AI has seen some tweaking to better help the main character, but since the support characters don’t do an awful lot of support on their own, more tweaks are still needed. I did encounter a single bug that was easily fixed upon reloading an earlier save, so I do recommend saving often to avoid having to backtrack too much in the event they do occur for you as well. Finally, one thing that is worth noting that seems to be popping up in player reviews is that the language in this game could be considered quite crude for a Medieval setting, as swear words flow freely from the mouths of party members. I personally found it interesting considering how few RPGs utilize current cuss words, but plenty of players seemed to be taken by surprise by this choice if the Steam reviews are anything to go by. To each their own, I suppose!

by Myrthos, 14:20

A new early access update for The Waylanders, marks the first of the three planned winter updates for the game.

A Coruña, Spain — Dec 18, 2020 - Gato Salvaje Studio has released the first of their three planned Winter Updates to their myth-filled RPG, The Waylanders. Today's Community Update brings significant changes to combat and character equipment based on community feedback.

"Since our Early Access launch, we've been talking with players and listening to their feedback in our Discord, Steam community forums, and on social media. We've included quite a few suggestions on how to improve our game in previous updates, but today's release is entirely focused on community feedback." said The Waylanders Creative Director, Serio Prieto. "Combat has been overhauled to feel more intuitive and tactical, character levels now give bigger leaps in progression, and the equipment you use will have more of an impact. The Waylanders - Preview @ Gamespace

by Hiddenx, 18:38

Gamespace checked out The Waylanders:

The Waylanders Hands-On Preview for PC

A promising RPG in the style of Dragon Age and Baldur’s Gate

I’ve been following the development of The Waylanders for at least a couple of years now and was eager to play it when it went into early access on Steam this week. There was reportedly a Celtic flavor that piqued my interest and I can tell you what I’ve played of the alpha build is quite promising. This is our initial impressions review of The Waylanders for PC.

There may be a slight bias here since Dragon Age is probably my favorite RPG series of all time and some Bioware staff has worked on this title. The art style is surprisingly fresh and slightly cartoonish, which puts it in contrast to games like The Witcher and Dragon Age for example. I didn’t feel lost at all during the opening character creation, thankfully; since this is the alpha build I hope more customization options will be present at launch. As is par for the course in RPGs like this, you have a robust amount of classes and races to pick from; I still can’t decide between werewolf and human for my playthrough. Trans and non-binary readers should happily note you can pick your pronouns and voice tone if you need to; I thought it was a nice, inclusive addition. All standard RPG classes (warrior, ranger, mage, rogue, healer) are also present and accounted for.

The Waylanders - Preview @ Gameffine

by Myrthos, 10:10

Yemeth has taken a look at the Early Access version of The Waylanders and feels it has gone into early access to early.

...

With that out of the way, it’s time for some Real Talk. Over the years, the term Early Access has been subjected to a hefty amount of ridicule and suspicion. It has become a hive of unfinished projects and asset flips. While The Waylanders is not either of those things, it probably magic missile-d itself in the face by going public with this build. To me, Early Access is an opportunity for the devs to present a ‘functional’ slice of their project and to build a supportive community that will play a big hand in the development ahead. With Early Access, the first impression is often the most important phase and could make or break your game.

Frankly, I think Gato Salvaje has a solid vision laid out for the game. On paper and on the Steam page, The Waylanders sounds like a game that every Bioware fan could fall in love with: a unique setting, a story written by industry veterans, music composed by Inon Zur, and party-based tactical combat. Sadly, the Early Access version of the game does a poor job of selling The Waylanders to the public. The Waylanders is currently just an alpha build at this stage. The fact that the developer openly declares it doesn’t make you like the game any better. Transparency is good and all, but it’s not ready for the storefront yet.

The Waylanders - In Early Access on the 16th of June

by Myrthos, 12:26

The Waylanders is coming to Early Access next week.

A Coruna, Spain - June 11, 2020 - As revealed in the IGN Summer of Gaming showcase, Gato Salvaje Studio has announced their upcoming RPG, The Waylanders, will launch into Steam Early Access June 16, 2020. The Early Access version of The Waylanders is priced at $34.99 USD and will launch with a temporary discount of 10%.

The Waylanders is a party-based experience set in the Celtic and Medieval eras that explores mythology from Celtic Spain and surrounding regions. Featuring real-time combat with a tactical pause, the player party can combine into offensive formations allowing for deep combat tactics. With six basic classes, 30 advanced classes, and 9 companion characters to battle beside and romance, all kinds of RPG play styles can be accommodated.

"The Waylanders is not only a game about legends, it is a story of our culture and our roots," said Sergio Prieto, Gato Salvaje Studio Creative Director. "All the team was deeply involved in the development, and I'm very proud of the work we've done so far. As we head into Steam Early Access, we want the game to grow with player's feedback so it becomes not only a fantastic RPG, but also the best Celtic game possible."

The Steam Early Access version of The Waylanders contains around 10 to 12 hours of the planned 40 hour adventure, with more than 8 unique locations with over 40 maps to visit while exploring the Celtic Age of the game. While The Waylanders begins its Early Access journey in English-only, additional languages (Spanish, Galician, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Russian) and features such as loyalty quests, crafting equipment improvements, and advanced classes are planned to be added in later updates. As development continues, the team plans to release periodic updates with gameplay changes until the final launch. A roadmap will be released shortly after the Early Access release.

After a successful Kickstarter in November 2018 where 3,362 backers raised nearly $170,000, bringing writer Emily Grace Buck to the project as the title's main writer and Narrative Director. Emily was joined by experienced writers Chris Avellone and Gavin Jurgens-Fyrhie as The Waylanders developed. This announcement goes out alongside the release of the beta build of The Waylanders to Kickstarter backers, giving them a taste of the game before it goes live later this month.

The Waylanders - Animal Companions

by Myrthos, 18:48

A newsletter for The Waylanders talks about pets and also if you can pet them.

A Coruña, Spain - June 3, 2020 - The world of The Waylanders is closer than you think! Watch out for the release date announcement on June 8th in the IGN Summer of Gaming showcase! As the hype grows, the team is getting many questions from fans like: Do I get that ship as a base? Yep! Can you romance Nazhedja? Yes! Are there pets? YES!

No RPG is complete without an animal companion who's set out to slay monsters by your side, and The Waylanders is no different. While The Waylanders' resident werewolf, Rea, meets the description, she takes offense at being called a pet.

While most classes don't get a furry, feathered, or scaled friend, Rangers in The Waylanders have twelve different animal companions to choose from. These pet companions level as you do and have unique abilities that damage, distract, heal, and inflict status effects. Ranger animal companions are always with the party and can be directed to take action just like all your other characters. While a few of these pets are race and advanced class-specific, many can travel beside any kind of Ranger the player chooses to create.

Ranger Pets:

  • Dog - A furry friend with a distracting bark and sharp bite

  • Wolf - A cunning pack hunter with a self-healing attacks and an invigorating howl

  • Wild Boar - A tough ally with sharp tusks and a devastating charge

  • Deer - A swift fighter with sharp hooves and a hard skull

  • Rabbit - A lightning-quick companion with some unexpected tricks

  • Bear - A fearsome guardian with savage jaws

  • Raven - A dark omen on wings with a razor beak

  • Jay - A colorful bird with sharp talons and a swooping assault

  • Panther - A lithe predator that favors pouncing and biting

  • Spider - A patient, terrifying huntress with a prickly web

  • Dragon - A legendary beast with powerful wings and explosive breath

  • Drake - A scaly-skinned carnivore with a lethal charge and deadly breath

While petting animals isn't an early access launch feature, the team wants to hear if that's something fans are excited about. Let them know on Twitter and Facebook.

Magic inclined characters will not miss out on pets either. Special summoning Invocations used by a variety classes summon spectral creatures who battle beside the party for a short time after their ability is used. Summon the Wild, for example, allows a Healer to call a spiritual guardian to the party's aid.

Lastly, everyone's favourite goblin in the Waylanders, Trasté, has his own special wisps who act as a minion to aid in combat. By using Trasté's Friends! Ability, a Wisp appears near you every few seconds acting as ammunition for certain abilities, or can explode*, damaging a target.

*no wisps are harmed during explosion. This is a perfectly natural part of a goblin wisp's day in The Waylanders. Wisps love Trasté! Friends!

The Waylanders - Heir Disgraced (Story preview)

by Silver, 21:15

PC Gamer reports on a new trailer for The Waylanders that goes into the story.

loading...

The Waylanders is a party-based RPG in the vein of Dragon Age and Pillars of Eternity that tells the tale of the first meeting between between the ancient Celts and their gods, the Tuatha de Danaan. Developer Gato Studio showed off the combat system last year (real-time with pause, as it should be) but the story is possibly an even bigger attraction: It's being written by former Telltale designer Emily Grace Buck, Chris Avellone is also on the job (because of course he is), and former Dragon Age creative director Mike Laidlaw is a script consultant.

The studio released a new video today showcasing one of the early-game narrative interludes that will be used to push the story forward: Ith, the King of Brigantia, is about to lead the first delegation to the mythical home of the gods, but his hothead son, Lugaid, threatens to ruins decades of diplomacy with his youthful arrogance. Both characters will be quest-givers in the game, while the third NPC to appear in the video, the druid Amergin, will be available as a companion. The player-character can be seen in there, too—that's their arm in the frame at around the 52-second mark.

by Myrthos, 20:23

New video shows The Waylanders character creator and gameplay

Player Classes, Races, and Backgrounds revealed!

A Coruña, Spain - May 13, 2020 - Gato Salvaje has released a new video showing a selection of the character creator options coming in The Waylanders. With multiple races, classes, and backgrounds to choose from, The Waylanders offers a wide range of customization options.

Coming to Steam Early Access this summer, The Waylanders begins in a myth-filled Celtic era of history and sets the player on an adventure through the region of Katia and into the medieval future.

Watch the new Character Creator Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rxiuLQouDE

Players creating their character in The Waylanders have six base classes to choose from: Warrior, Guardian, Rogue, Ranger, Sorcerer, and Healer. Each base class will have a variety of specializations available at later levels, giving a wide range of options for multiple playthroughs.

Formations are a new RPG gameplay element introduced in The Waylanders, granting special attacks, abilities, and transformations based on the class makeup of the player character and their accompanying companions. This video also shows just a few of the formation abilities available including the three shown in the video: Golem Transformation, Spear Rush, and Conclave.

In addition to to their class, players can pick their race (Human, Mourian, Half-Formorian, Werewolf) and select from a variety of backgrounds (Celtic Soldier, Celtic Druid, Egyptian, Mourian Diplomat, Mourian Protector, Dogs of Ares Mercenary, Alpha Wolf, and Slave).

See below for a list of class, race, and background descriptions.

Base Player Classes:

Warrior

Strong and reckless, Warriors inflict devastating damage with two heavy weapons. Shunning defense, they are merciless at close range, cutting down their enemies or flinging them across the battlefield. Warriors can also throw their opponents across the field of battle

Features: Dual Wielding, Heavy Weapons, Short Range, Melee

Guardian

A selfless defender and champion, Guardians shield their friends in battle. Fighting on the front lines with a sword and shield, they draw the attention of their enemies, exposing vulnerable flanks.

Features: Shield, Heavy Weapons, Tank, Melee

Rogue

Clever Rogues are masters of trickery, evasion, and assassination. They weaken and confuse their foes before finishing them off with lethal close-range attacks. If you like quiet assassinations, disappearing and reappearing at will, or just stabbing things, you'll want to try this class.

Features: Daggers, Damage Over Time, Trickery, Evasion, Critical Damage

Ranger

Rangers are lethal sharpshooters with a loyal animal companion. Rangers excel at long-range combat, using their bows to inflict critical damage on foes' hidden weaknesses.

Features: Long-Range Weapons, Pets, Critical Damage

Use lethal spells on individual enemies, cast incantations that cause havoc across large swaths of the battlefield, and bend reality to get yourself out of the way of attacking enemies.

Features: Destruction Magick, Area Spells, Teleporting

Healer

Healers call upon the aid of the spirits of the earth in order to provide your companions with defensive or offensive buffs, or use those same spirits to debuff your enemies. The Healer is the beating heart of any party.

Features: Healing, Buffs, Debuffs

Player Races:

Human

Humans are the most common and diverse race in Brigantia. The Celts are the main human race represented in The Waylanders, but as the seat of a thriving empire with trade routes that extend well beyond the continent of Europe, Brigantia has always been home to people of many different beliefs, nationalities, races, and ethnicities.

Mourian

The Mourians are an immortal race with dark skin, golden eyes, and a penchant for both fate-based magicks and intellectual pursuits. After centuries living amongst humans and other surface-dwellers, most Mourians have grown tired of mortal affairs, and have developed thriving communities of their own in the Underworld and the Medulas.

Werewolf

Descendants of the god Lug, werewolves do not transform humans with a bite, or change shape with the phases of the moon. Some appear almost human with lupine characteristics. Some are indistinguishable from wolves, but with human intelligence. The majority, however, are fearsome half-human beasts, ferocious in battle, and dangerous foes.

Half-Fomorian

The Fomorians are a race of monstrous immortal giants who once ruled Ireland. When the Tuatha came to power, they banished the Fomorians to a small corner of the Mourian Underworld. The Fomorians have been in exile for thousands of years, biding their time until they have an opportunity to retake their ancestral home. Half-Fomorians are the offspring of these titans: less monstrous in appearance, but just as fearsome.

Player Backgrounds

Background options depend on the race and class you choose. Some combinations allow different origins/backgrounds, others are limited to a specific one.

Celtic Druid

As a Celtic druid, you are deeply ensconced in the Celtic culture. Born with a natural aptitude for magick, you were sent to the druidic circle in Dumbriga as a child to develop your skills. The other druids at the circle are your main family and cultural touchstones, and the trees, stones, birds, and the sea are as alive and important to you as people.

Celtic Soldier

The Celtic soldier has been training in the ways of combat since they were a teen. They grew up in the Celtic culture and faith, but spent their early adulthood traveling around the world as a mercenary. During that time, they gained knowledge about other cultures and fighting styles that has made them more open to different ideas, good at cross-cultural negotiations, and very valuable on the battlefield. They're now an honored, decorated member of King Ith's personal guard.

Egyptian

Since the beginning of time, Brigantia has been deeply connected to Egypt. The two societies have traded goods and culture for as long as anyone can remember, and many Egyptians reside in Brigantia. Queen Escota herself was born in Egypt, and openly follows the Egyptian religion. A few years ago, the queen's son, Prince Lugaid met you in Egypt, and offered you a position in his entourage. You have been traveling with him ever since, as a trusted advisor and friend.

Dogs of Ares Mercenary

As a teenager, Prince Lugaid of Brigantia was sent to Scythia to study their advanced combat tactics. You were his instructor. You believe strongly in the glory of battle and are one the best skirmishers in the world, specializing in the Greek spear-and-shield fighting style, as well as the bow.

This is your first time ever visiting Brigantia, and you may find their ways rather odd and difficult to understand compared to your own. It doesn't bother you much. In your experience, most problems can be solved with close observation and, when necessary, a little bloodshed.

Alpha Wolf

You are the leader of a powerful pack of merchants and traders. This will be your first journey out of your family's lands, and you hope to meet your ancestor, Lug.

Werewolves don't prize the same qualities as other races do. You may not be as strong, tough, or smart as your packmates, but your speed is second to none.

Mourian Diplomat

The elders have been grooming you for Mourian leadership since a young age. Studies and travel consumed your early adulthood, and you have spent the last few years traveling with the Celts, learning about the world and teaching them about yours. This particular trip will be the first time you meet the Mourian Seer, and you hope to make a good impression on her.

You have a great deal of experience winning debates and are knowledgeable about cultures besides your own, but your devotion to intellectual pursuits have left you weaker and more frail than your famously sturdy people.

Mourian Protector

You have always been concerned with the protection of others, you have learned all the arts that allow you to be a great bodyguard. You have served as a defense for every diplomat they have sent you with, no matter how dangerous fate was and you have never failed. This time you will have the highest honor, being the guardian of La Vidente, leader and guide of your town and you hope to see on your return the great capital of the Underworld, which you never visited.

Slave

You grew up as a slave in the Mourian underground, with little knowledge of the outside world. You look human enough to most people, if a little tall. As a mercenary of the Mourians, you've fought on their side in various conflicts throughout your life. You arrive in Brigantia as their bodyguard, but also as a warning: your masters remember what the Tuatha did. Your Fomorian blood has given you strength, durability, and a tireless will

As an accomplished actor in TV and video games, Simon Templeman is credited on many AAA titles. RPG fans will recognize him as the voice of Loghain from the popular Dragon Age series.

Rosalind Eleazar is the proud and intelligent necromancer Khaldun. Eldest daughter of a noble family in Meroe, she was sent to Egypt to be educated in the best schools Alexandria could offer. Now as a priestess of the god Osiris, in King Ith's court, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Rosalind Eleazar's experience in TV dramas Howards End, Rellik, and Harlots, brings weight to this fearsome magic user.

Colin Salmon is Berath, an immortal Mourian professor. Blunt, calm, and deadly, Berath has spent the human generations since his childhood traveling and learning, and has become a skilled and dangerous Pathfinder. Despite everything he's learned, however, he still finds wonder and mystery in the tiniest butterfly.

As a well-known TV and film actor, genre fans will know Colin Salmon from his roles in Arrow, Krypton, Mortal Engines, and Sofia the First amongst others.

Lisa Jacobs dreams of the sky as Delba, a huge Fomorian warrior. As a champion of her underground race, she's known for her strength, considerable size, ferocity, and love of dirty jokes. Youngest daughter of the Fomorian king, as well as one of the youngest Fomorians alive, with only a scant few centuries under her belt, Delba dreams of following her mother to the surface and showing the humans that Fomorians aren't the monsters they appear to be.

Lisa Jacobs is known for her work in The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank, The Politician's Wife, and The Criminal.

Sara Kestelman joins the cast as Brigg, a veteran commander seeking new adventures. As former commander in King Ith's army, Brigg may have retired a few years ago but they are nowhere near ready to settle down. A world of adventure awaits!

In addition to her many TV and film roles, Sara Kestelman voiced Kreia in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords.

Fred Tatasciore has become a boisterous Heraklios. This mighty Greek mercenary is trying to live up to the legends. Heraklios likes beer, hates injustice, and loves a good belly laugh. He has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of Greek legends and myths, and will recount them - loudly, and with many embellishments - to anyone who asks.

Fred Tatasciore's work includes a substantial list of credits in film, TV, animation, and video games. Gaming fans will recognize him as the voice of Overwatch's Soldier: 76 and Don Corneo from the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

STORY CHARACTERS

Amber Rose Revah sees the future as Nazhedja. This Immortal Seer has existed for as long as anyone can remember, and has held a high position in Mourian society for centuries. She's regarded as the world's foremost magical authority, and she absolutely loves it. Nazhedja can see every aspect of the past and the future... until she met you.

Ash Sroka plays Tiana, Commander of the Celtic army, and one of the people currently vying for the throne of Brigantia. Her quest for the throne is a reluctant one; she'd prefer to be a commander for the rest of her life, but she truly believes that no one else has her qualifications and support.

Fans of BioWare's Mass Effect series will immediately know Ash Sroka as Tali'Zorah vas Normandy. Ash has had a long history with Gato Salvaje, playing Alicia in Gato's Ar-k games.

The Waylanders - Meet the Companions

by Myrthos, 15:33

Get to meet the companions that will be available in Early Access for The Waylanders.

Meet Your Companions In Gato Salvaje's Upcoming Time Travelling RPG, The Waylanders

Nine unique party members to travel with, battle beside, and romance as The Waylanders comes to Steam Early Access this summer.

A Coruña, Spain - March 27, 2020 - Gato Salvaje has shared the full roster of companions for their upcoming time travelling fantasy RPG based on Celtic mythology. The Waylanders, headed for an early access launch this summer, was heavily inspired by RPG classics such as Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur's Gate. As such, The Waylanders will have a full roster of companions to travel beside the player's character as they step between Celtic and Medieval periods.

Without further ado, let's meet the team:

Amergin is Master Druid of the court of King Ith. Bright, inspired, excited about life, and gifted at magic, he is known through the court for his charm and sharp wit. Amergin believes with all his heart that the world is out of balance, and he has devoted himself to becoming part of the solution.

A distant relative of King Ith, Amergin's magickal prowess was discovered at an early age. He was sent to the Mage's College, where he was raised with little knowledge of the outside world. Though he excelled at his classes and was extremely well-liked, he developed a reputation for sometimes being close-minded when it came to opinions conflicting with the Celtic way of life.

Amergin is regarded as a magical and political authority by other humans, but due to his youth, immortals rarely take him seriously. They should though, Amergin is the most powerful druid to grace the Celts in generations, a fact that he is only just coming to realize.

Studious, serious, and sometimes overly blunt– Berath is a quiet immortal professor. Underneath his often cold & analytical exterior is a kind, gentle soul who is not afraid to rib others with a playfully snarky comment. Don't be fooled by his passion for craft, cooking, and plants — with his knowledge of the bow, Berath is generally one of the most dangerous people in any room.

Unlike many Mourians, who have a zest for life and enjoy drama, Berath embraced his immortality by relishing small moments of light. He connects with those who are struggling by reminding them of the little things that are going well. Berath still finds wonder in the tiniest butterfly and mystery in the rainbow reflection of morning dew. Every moment is a meditation.

Berath has dealt with depression his entire life. While his overall demeanor is calm, a pervasive undercurrent of deep sadness he cannot shake. As an immortal who has been living with a mental illness for generations, he's come to accept that's just how things are going to be.

Delba is the youngest daughter of the Fomorian king. Only centuries old, she is one of the youngest Fomorians. Her mother disappeared on the surface when she was a child, and she's been obsessed with exploring the human world since. Delba's vision is that the Fomorians will be able to show the humans that they're not monsters, and will one day find a happier life on the surface in coexistence.

As a Fomorian, Delba is enormous, and most people on the surface find her scary, an opinion she finds hilarious. Delba's tough and violent when she needs to be, but she'd much rather be playing music and telling dirty jokes with her friends.

Optimistic to a fault, Delba wants the Fomorians to stop living in the shadows and to lead them  in a triumphant return to the surface. She hopes to inspire others to be more accepting of her kind, and will often neglect her own needs in order to make people like her. Everything is Fomorian first for Delba– and when it comes to conflicts she doesn't care as much about morality as she does about practicality and pushing her own cause.

A Greek mercenary in his early twenties, Heraklios loves glory more than anything else in the world. He insists, nearly to the point of obsession, that every fight be as fair as possible. He will sometimes make situations substantially harder on himself just so that he can live up to that sense of fairness. As well, Heraklios tries to stand up against injustice anywhere he sees it, but this can get him into trouble when he intervenes where he isn't wanted.

Outside of combat situations, Heraklios is a little awkward, but sweet and full of bravado. He's very traditionally masculine in a number of ways– including his love of beer, a good laugh, and bad jokes. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of Greek legends and myths, and will recount them loudly, and with many embellishments to anyone who asks. Or doesn't.

Heraklios struggles with impostor syndrome. Despite being unbelievably skilled, he never feels like he is enough– that all of his accomplishments have been lucky breaks, and his failures have been deserved. Heraklios's biggest dream is to earn glory, worthy of love and go down in history as a hero, and above all else — to feel like he really, truly deserved it.

The eldest daughter of a noble family in Meroe, in The Kingdom of Kush, she was sent to Egypt as a young teenager and educated in the best schools Alexandria could offer. Khaldun can read, write, and speak nearly a dozen languages, and can speak at length about the vast pantheons of Nubian & Egyptian gods and goddesses without checking reference materials.

Proud of her heritage, Khaldun prefers to wear clothing styles that reflect her Egyptian culture. She relocated to Brigantia with Queen Escota and Prince Lugaid five years ago and these costumes and styles still seem foreign and overly elegant to her Celtic peers.

Khaldun's necromantic powers come from her unwavering faith in the Egyptian pantheon and her devotion as a priestess to the god Osiris. This occasionally put her in conflict with some of the more devout Celtic worshipers she encounters.

Mal is a mid thirties, tough-as-nails rogue who loves violence for the sake of violence. Luckily, she has channeled this love into a career killing dangerous monsters. She doesn't talk much, would rather be caught dead than in a dress, and perversely enjoys smelling a little bit like death to keep people from talking to her. If you don't seem dangerous or interesting, she won't give you the time of day. The only time she's seen smiling is when she's killing something.

Those who get close to Mal notice two things: her knives and her golden eye. The story goes that years ago she lost an eye in a fight with a monster and her husband at the time, a Mourian man, saved her life by pouring magic imbued gold in her empty eye socket. Now, if she places the eye of a deceased creature or person in that socket, she can see how that individual died. This moment of death comes not just from the deceased's eyes, but also their feelings at their time of death, which distort the vision. A murder victim may perscieve their killer as more horrifying or monstrous than they are in real life.

The werewolf curse of Rea's clan has intensified over time, with each new generation becoming more lupine than the last. Rea was the first werewolf to be born without speech. Though she walks on all fours, she is more intelligent and empathetic than most humans. Rea thinks deeply about every action, and chooses her moves and howls carefully. She believes that it's in everyone's best interest to work together and strive towards a better future.

Do not confuse Rea for a dog. Where pet dogs are loyal out of pure love for their masters, Rea's loyalty stems from her need to prove she is just as human as everyone else. A difficult task when you're essentially nonverbal. Not being able to talk when you can think in complex sentences is frustrating, and sometimes she lashes out.

Rea has a different perspective on the corruption plaguing the land than the rest of your party. She hopes that those being corrupted beyond recognition might one day be cured, and that whatever magic brings about that cure might finally help teach her how to communicate with others the way she's always dreamed about. In the meantime, she'll continue practicing trying to wrap her tongue around words while standing on her hind legs.

Nearing fifty, Brigg is your oldest non-immortal party member in the game. Until a few years ago, they had been a commander in King Ith's army until they retired in order to allow their young protegeé, Tiana, to take her place. Brigg supports Tiana completely from their new role as an advisor.

Brigg was born in a tiny village far outside of Brigantia, but ran away to join the military when they were a teenager. They've been fighting longer than many of your companions have been alive. They're incredibly optimistic, and will try to do the right thing whenever possible.

Despite their age and scars from numerous battles, Brigg has remained feminine in a very girlish, innocent way. They're a tomboy for sure... all swords, punches, and bloodshed... but at the end of a hard day of brutal training they'll make flower crowns for the younger warriors to help them relax.

Brigg's introversion can sometimes get in their way, as people don't expect it from such a physically tough, commanding person, but they're deeply private about their true thoughts and feelings. Brigg rarely engages in conversations that go below surface level.

Trasté is a Goblin!

Trasté is from Aunes, a coastal city. Many trasnos there. Many fun jokes and much music!!

Youngest of the trasnos, but who knows what that means in your years. Trasnos do not care about time. Time is fake, probably. Unless they're waiting for a person to... hehe... come across one of their pranks!!

Trasté different too, from other trasnos. Usually trasnos do not care for people problems. Unless people problems are from pranks done by trasno. Trasté care very hard. Trasté wish Trasté was a people.

You changed from one thing into another thing. Maybe you can make Trasté a people?? Worth a try!!!

The Waylanders - Companion: Rea The WereWolf

by Myrthos, 11:44

A new companion in The Waylanders has been announced, which is a werewolf.

The werewolf curse has intensified over time, as each new generation becomes more lupine than the last. Rea was the first werewolf to be born without speech. She walks on all fours. But do not be deceived- she is more intelligent and empathetic than most humans. And she is definitely not a dog.

Whereas pet dogs are loyal out of pure love for their masters, Rea is loyal, but it’s because she spends her time trying to prove that she is just as human as everyone else... which is difficult when you’re essentially nonverbal. Not being able to talk when you can think in complex sentences is frustrating, and sometimes she melts down and lashes out. But then, she feels even worse. When she’s not overly frustrated, Rea thinks deeply about every action, and chooses her moves and howls carefully. She believes that it’s in everyone’s best interest to work together and strive towards a better future.

Rea has a different perspective on the corruption plaguing the land than the rest of your party. She hopes that those being corrupted beyond recognition might one day be cured, and that whatever magic brings about that cure might finally help teach her how to communicate with others the way she’s always dreamed about. In the meantime, she’ll continue practicing trying to form her mouth around words and stretching her back leg muscles.

She dreams of falling in love and having her own pups someday, but will not even consider becoming romantically involved with anyone until she can speak to them the words of love she truly wants to share... and ensure that her children wouldn’t share her curse.

The Waylanders - Companion: Khaldun

by Myrthos, 13:41

The background of the companion Khaldun has been shared  by the The Waylanders team.\

Khaldun is in her mid twenties, and is intelligent as hell. The eldest daughter of a noble family in Meroe, in The Kingdom of Kush, she was sent to Egypt as a young teenager and educated in the best schools Alexandria could offer. She relocated to Brigantia with Queen Escota and Prince Lugaid five years ago. Khaldun can read, write, and speak nearly a dozen languages, and can tell you anything about the vast pantheons of Nubian & Egyptian gods and goddesses without checking reference materials.

Khaldun prefers to wear clothing styles that reflect her adopted Egyptian culture. These costumes and styles may seem foreign and overly elegant to her Celtic peers, but Khaldun doesn’t mean them that way, and she doesn’t care. She is proud of her heritage.

Her necromantic powers come from her unwavering faith in the Egyptian pantheon, and she is a devoted priestess to the god Osiris. This may put her into direct conflict with some of your devout Celtic party members on occasion.

Khaldun views sex and romance quite separately. She’s generally down to play a little, but if you want to fully romance her, she wants you all to herself. She’s had a few bad experiences with some open relationships since moving to the land of the Celts, and she needs to know that she’s your one and only. If you’re not willing to commit to her, and only to her, she won’t have any reservations about ending things. But if you do commit, she is a powerful and loving partner.

The Waylanders - Gameplay Video & Preview

by Silver, 09:27

A gameplay video of The Waylanders and a preview by GamesRadar.

“The Hercules Tower is the sacred place of Brigantia,” Pardo says. “It’s the centre of magic in the Celtic era.” According to legend, Pardo continues, standing at the top will allow you to see all the way to Ireland – although this is little more than a tall tale. “That tower is still there and still works as a lighthouse,” Pardo says. “It's 2,000 years old.”  All of a sudden, a portal is opened up between your screen and Celtic Galicia, as you begin to realize that elements of your world and its are inextricably intertwined.

So when you’re thrust into combat situations alongside your companions – of which there are 10 – the heat of the battle is cranked right up, as if you’re brandishing steel in the midst of a sweltering blaze. “In our game, there are six basic classes,” Pardo tells me: "warrior, guardian, explorer, rogue, sorcerer, and healer.” As with traditional RPGs, these six basic archetypes branch out into different styles as the game progresses, eventuating in 30 advanced builds that combine your original class with one of the other five remaining ones.

RPGWatch @ Gamescom - The Waylanders Preview

by Myrthos, 10:01

The Waylanders is a game that takes place in Spain and where you get to travel through time to visit two different eras in the same region of Spain. We looked at The Waylanders last year at Gamescom and we had a chance to look at it again this year, from which this article resulted.

Last year at Gamescom I saw The Waylanders for the first time. The game was announced  just before the start of Gamescom that year and since then they have received a lot of useful feedback from potential players. I won't go into details about what I already described last year, which is why this article is a bit shorter than usual.
The game is inspired by the myths of the Spanish region of Galicia and the story takes place in the Celtic era in Brigantia and in the middle ages, both in Galicia. You start the game in the Celtic era, where magic exists and is considered to be something normal. In the medieval era, magic is forbidden.
At the end of the first act you will learn how to travel through time. And although The Waylanders is a party based game, you'll travel alone. However, you will meet some of your companions in the medieval era. But, they will not know you as they suffer from a mental disorder that prevents them from remembering you. It is your task to help them remember. Your choices are important, so what you do in one time era can impact the other time era.
Independent of the era you are in, you and your companions will have the same skills, to prevent you to use completely different tactics in each of the eras.

The Waylanders Reveal a Stunning Cinematic Trailer at Gamescom 2019

A new trailer and some incredible new additions to the team highlight a big Gamescom presence for The Waylanders

Cologne, Germany - August 23, 2019 — Fresh off their exclusive reveal on IGN Live at Gamescom 2019 and exactly one year after it was first announced, Gato Studio is sharing an absolutely stunning look into epic time-traveling RPG, The Waylanders with an all-new cinematic trailer. They're also excited to announce that joining narrative lead Emily Grace Buck, whose hard work has shaped this already stellar storyline, The Waylanders also sees the addition of legendary scriptwriter, Chris Avellone, alongside Emmy Award-winning musician, Inon Zur (Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3, Crysis) who will be along for the ride as the lead musician on the project.

Chris Avellone brings with him an extensive resume and has been working on The Waylanders for the past 18 months. With past credits on games such as Fallout: New Vegas and Divinity: Original Sin 2, as well as upcoming credits on AAA projects like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Dying Light 2, Avellone adds to an already top-rated writing team which includes narrative lead Emily Grace Buck (Telltale's The Walking Dead), consultant Mike Laidlaw (Dragon Age: Origins, Jade Empire), and game director Sergio Prieto. Together, this exemplary team is crafting a sweeping and fantastic RPG story.

Inon Zur, the lead musician for The Waylanders project, is also no stranger to the world of videogames. Known for his internationally acclaimed work on the Fallout saga and its unforgettable main theme, Zur has seen his name in the credits of many of gaming's biggest heavy-hitters including Dragon Age: Origins, Soulcalibur V, Dragon's Dogma, and more. He is an Emmy award-winner and three-time BAFTA nominee.

An exciting fantasy RPG inspired by classics such as Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur's Gate, The Waylanders showcases a unique, party-based experience that time travels between two distinct eras — Celtic and Medieval — covering a rich history that has been largely overlooked in video game lore up to this point. Choices made in one time period can have dire consequences in the other, meaning players will feel the impact of their decisions in surprising and shocking ways.

Its innovative gameplay boasts unique formations for deep, tactical combat, in combination with 6 basic and 30 advanced classes, as well as 5 playable races (based on Celtic mythology) with full character customization and different origins for your character.

Companions are an integral part of any RPG experience, and The Waylanders offers a variety of traveling companions that can join you on your journey. The player will be able to talk to their companions in-depth, discover their past, play loyalty missions, and even experience romances with them.

The Waylanders will be coming to PC in 2020.

The Waylanders - Healer Abilities

by Myrthos, 10:19

Some more information about the abilities of the healer, one of the 6 base classes in The Waylanders, is made available.

If you prefer using magick in order to help others, play as a healer. Call upon the aid of the spirits of the earth in order to provide your companions with defensive or offensive buffs, or use those same spirits to debuff your enemies. When your companions have been attacked, cast spells to heal them, or to remove debuffs.

Healer features: healing and protection, buffs, debuffs

Your group will feel much more comfortable if you count on a healer in the team. But, even being a class focused on protecting the party, healers also have their own offensive tools to beat opponents.

The Waylanders - Combat System Example

by Silver, 20:19

A short update for The Waylanders shows a skill available to long-ranged characters.

Greetings adventurers!

A short-but-cool update today. As you know, combat is one of the key features on The Waylanders. We are working hard to provide you with deep combat system and innovative skills and moves.

Just an example:

You play with a long-ranged style character. Your bow is equipped and the enemies are too close. Numerical disadvantage and wrong weapon. Bad situation.

It seems like your end is near, but... not yet. Your character has some skills to survive.

loading...

This is a short example of how deep (and cool) will the combat system be in The Waylanders.

Remember this is a work in progress feature, so expect major changes and improvements.

Oh! There's one more thing: the Mourian character used in the video will be part of The Waylanders story. A relevant one. His name is Berath. We'll give you more details soon ;)

The Waylanders - Brigantia First Look

by Myrthos, 10:04

Over a week ago an update was made available for The Waylanders showing the world of Brigantia.

The Waylanders development is progressing in a positive way, and we want to show you the latest version of one of the most emblematic locations in the game: Brigantia.

Brigantia is a bustling coastal city, and home to King Ith and his court. During the Celtic Era, Brigantia has the largest and densest population in Kaltia. The Tower, an ancient lighthouse, is located here. Also, the Celtic hillfort is near the Tower.

And now is time to watch the results by yourself.

The Waylanders - Interview

by Silver, 22:12

OnlySP has an extensive interview about The Waylanders.

So what is the game? It is clearly an RPG on an epic scale, and one that will be crammed with rich lore and a plethora of options for the player. Sergio explained that the story is based on the brothers’ homeland, Galicia. “Waylanders was born because we travelled around Galicia, as well as a good part of England and Ireland,” explained Sergio. “There is a very good background and history. It’s a very beautiful environment. Our land is very special because it is known as Celtic, but it is not one of the Celtic nations, yet we still have a lot of Celtic legends here. There is a lot of magic and mystery in the legends, so we thought a lot about what we can discuss in an RPG. Obviously it’s a very fresh mythology.”

Fernando expanded upon that basis with some more historical context about the medieval setting. “We knew about the story, where it was going to be set and that it was going to use Lebor Gabála Érenn, an Irish book that talks about how the kingdom of Ireland was created in around 500 BCE. It’s a story that tells us about how people from Galicia went to Ireland, so we thought it would be cool to look at that. It is a story that certainly hasn’t been told in video games before, and even hasn’t been touched by cinema, and it involved a lot of magic, a lot of mythology, a lot of fantastical creatures. We thought it was something that would be good to explore be in an RPG, and that’s when we began to grow our idea that could be the perfect idea. The perfect story for the game.”

The Waylanders - Weapons, Backerkit & PAX East

by Silver, 11:56

A new update for The Waylanders looks at Weapons, Backerkit and PAX East!

Weapons, Backerkit and... PAX East!

Posted by Gato Salvaje (Creator)

Greetings adventurers,

We have some news and announcements. Here we go!

If you followed the previous updates, you'll know about the three exclusive weapons included in the +$80 reward tiers:

exclusive weapons

Well, the weapons have gone from concept art to finished 3D models. And this is the result!

Werewolf bow Werewolf bow

Werewolves represent the traditional way to craft a weapon, as they scavenge and combine present-in-nature materials. In this particular case, the bow is made with antlers.

Werewolf weapons are usually finished with some leather, ropes, and even metallic ornaments. They intentionally paint these weapons with dark colors to give off a rougher vibe.

Mourian sword Mourian sword

Mourian weapons provide a counterpoint to the werewolves' style. They use smoother shapes and elegant ornaments to embellish their weapons. Gold and precious metals reflect the power and wealth of this race. They fight with style!

Fomorian rod Fomorian rod

Intimidation and strength are the best words to describe Fomorian weapons. Given their limited access to quality materials, they mostly use bones as a base for combat-oriented objects.

They’ve perfected the art of bone-carving, and for good reason; animal skulls and feet are a good way to make durable and devastating weapons.

The Waylanders - New Race Info & Pledge Manager

by Silver, 21:09

A new update for The Waylanders that details the various races and talks about the pledge manager.

New race info & pledge manager

Hi everyone!

We are setting up the pledge manager with a trusted and experienced company called BackerKit. Most of you will surely know it if you've previously backed other campaigns on Kickstarter. So we'll notify you when The Waylanders pledge manager is available.

Meanwhile, we want to show you one more race from The Waylanders: Humans. Enjoy reading!

[...]

If you choose to play as a Human in The Waylanders, you can pick between one of four different origins. Each origin will have an associated stat boost.

Let's take a look to these four origins:

celtic soldier

Celtic Soldier

The Celtic soldier has been training in the ways of combat since they were a teen. They grew up in the Celtic culture and faith, but spent their early adulthood traveling around the world as a mercenary. During that time, they gained knowledge about other cultures and fighting styles that has made them more open to different ideas, good at cross-cultural negotiations, and very valuable on the battlefield. They’re now an honored, decorated member of King Ith’s personal guard.

If you play as a Celtic soldier, at the beginning of the game, you’ve been asked by King Ith to protect him and assist him during his meeting with the Tuatha de Danaan. The chance to guard your kind is an enormous honor that you’ve been working towards for your entire career.

celtic druid

Celtic Druid

The Celtic druid is deeply ensconced in the Celtic culture. Born with a natural aptitude for magick, they were sent to the druidic circle in Dumbriga when they were a small child in order to develop their skills. The other druids at the circle are their main family and cultural touchstone. They’ve become a respected and valued scholar, known for their devotion to the Celtic faith, and their ability to wield the natural elements. The trees, the stones, the birds, and the sea are as alive and important to them as other people. Their understanding of other cultures and religions might be severely lacking due to their focus specifically on the Celtic ways.

If you play as a Celtic druid, you’ve been brought along on King Ith’s journey to meet with the Tuatha de Danaan as a representative of the Celtic faith and way of life. It is the first time you’ve left Dumbriga as an adult- but the chance to meet your gods, the Tuatha, is an absolute dream come true.

egyptian

Egyptian

Since the beginning of time, Brigantia has been deeply connected to Egypt. The two societies have traded goods and culture for as long as anyone can remember, and many Egyptians reside in Brigantia. Queen Escota herself was born in Egypt, and openly follows the Egyptian religion. A few years ago, Queen Escota and Prince Lugaid made a diplomatic visit to Egypt, and met the Egyptian player character. The Prince offered them a position in his entourage, and they have been traveling with him ever since as a trusted advisor and friend. Though the Egyptian is far from home, they may still follow the Egyptian religion, and believe in the Egyptian magicks- providing offerings to their gods, keeping a deep reverence towards death, and believing in the Egyptian afterlife. Conversely, they may have fully accepted the Celtic religion and way of life. Or, they may do a little of both, like many Egyptian immigrants. That’s up to you.

If you play as an Egyptian, you’re joining Lugaid and his father, King Ith, on their visit to the Tuatha de Danaan. Your unique point of view is seen as deeply important to the negotiations, since you are one of the few people on the voyage who may see the Tuatha de Danaan as humans instead of gods.

Greek Scythian Mercenary

Greek Scythian Mercenary

Brigantia has recently begun trading with some regions of Greece, especially Scythia. When he was a young teenager, Prince Lugaid was sent to Scythia to study their advanced combat tactics. The Scythian player character is his instructor from his time there. The Scythian believes strongly in the glory of battle, and has years of training in the art of war. They specialize in the shield & spear fighting style typical of Greece, but are also extremely proficient with a bow and arrow, and are known for being one of the best skirmishers in the world. Everything they know about Celtic culture and society has come second-hand from Prince Lugaid- this is their first time ever visiting Brigantia. So, they have very little personal connection to the Celtic religion or way of life, and may find it rather odd compared to their own.

If you play as a Scythian, you have traveled all the way from Greece at the request of King Ith on his to meet the Tuatha de Danaan. Ith is paying you handsomely, because he knows you’re one of the best fighters in the world, and he trusts you completely. He also knows that you won’t be intimidated by the Tuatha, as you don’t see them as gods.

Which one of the four human origins do you prefer?  Share your feedback in the comments!

The Waylanders - Funded and Stretchgoal adjusted

by Hiddenx, 11:42

The Waylanders project is funded and a stretch goals has been adjusted:

FUNDED!!! New stretch goals revealed

We are now funded! And we wouldn't have been able to do it without your amazing support!

We want to say just two words:

THANK YOU!

But it's time to keep working, because there are two important days left! And we want to adjust our stretch goals. Emily have joined our team before we reached the stretch goal, and we also give you the first companion as a present for free. So, the next stretch goal was in $300,000. We adjusted it to... $160.000!

Do you want to know more about Aunes? You already have the info on this update!

And we also want to reveal the next stretch goals:

$180.000 Heraklios

Despite his youth, Heraklios is one of the best greek warriors, as good using sword as with his fists. Nobody wants to fight him in pancratio, sport where Heraklios is a brutal champion.

He’s a member of Salamina’s royal family and it’s said that he comes from Teucer’s lineage.

Following the known idea that superheroes are the gods and heroes in a modern mythology, Heraklios is obsessed with greek legends in the same way a modern “freak” would be with Star Wars or superheroe comics. During his childhood his parents told him classic greek histories, making him an absolute fan of these legends, being the Trojan Cycle his favorite saga. He could recite from memory all the ships and warriors who joined in the trojan siege, or spend hours in an argument about who would be the winner in a fight between Hercules and Achilles.

He is also obsessed with collecting things related with his favorite legends; his most valuable belonging is a replica of Achilles’ shield, decorated just like the one described in the Iliad. He does not use the shield in battle to keep it intact, in the same way a collector today would never open the package of a rare action figure.

His biggest dream is to get the glory in combat and become an equal to the mythological heroes he admires.

When a group of greek soldiers comes to Brigantia he joins them to follow the steps of his ancestor and go to the land where Teucer spent his last years.

As Brigantia is now in a siege, Heraklios finds some kind of similarity with the trojan war and thinks this is the great battle where he can find the fame he is looking for.

$200.000 Mal

$220.000 Khaldun

We'll reveal more information about Mal and Khaldun soon!

These three characters will add hours of play to The Waylanders! We want to remind you the important role of the companions in The Waylanders:

Companions are important characters that can join your party, and that you can have close relations with. They’ll provide you with more hours of gameplay, since they have their own character quests (these will have a similar format to Mass Effect’s loyalty missions). If you have a close relationship with them, you will get further quests and they’ll become an important part of your gameplay experience.

So, more companions means more time to enjoy The Waylanders!

Thank you again for your huge support. We'll do our best to unlock the new stretch goals!

The Waylanders - Goblin Companion

by Myrthos, 15:24

In the latest update, we learn that a Goblin companion will be added to The Waylanders.

The Goblins are cute, magical creatures intrinsically tied to nature. They wear outfits and masks made of bark, sticks, and leather.

Sometimes people don’t realize that they are speaking to a goblin- at first glance, they often look like children wearing costumes and playing pretend.

Adult goblins still move like children- they often run, jump, or skip instead of walking like proper human adults. Their high pitch voices and playful nature also contribute to this common misconception.

They are pranksters, and will do whatever they can in order to give themselves and their friends a good laugh… sometimes without realizing the harm they can cause. If they do hurt someone, they’ll feel bad about it. But empathetic foresight is uh… not their strong suit.

Despite this, goblins are clever and relatively mature. They are capable rogues and explorers, and they are brilliant at lightening the mood when necessary. Basically, they’re good people to have around in any adventuring party.

The largest population of goblins exists in the beautiful coastal city of Aunes, so many of them are used to sunlight, the ocean, and a calm lifestyle. The possibility of joining an adventure that could take them out of their comfort zone and allow them to experience new, fun places with totally different surroundings would be of great interest to many goblins.

Now that you know about this new race, we’ll like to give you a little present: a goblin companion will be include in the game for free!

The Waylanders - Update #15

by Hiddenx, 19:27

There's a new Kickstarter update for The Waylanders:

ALPHA access, German translation and free location

After a great weekend, we are super close to our goal! And we want to thank you for your amazing support with 3 new surprises: a new awesome add-on, a new FREE ingame location and the translation of the game to German!

New Location

We are adding an important location on the map of The Waylanders, which will expand your game experience.

[...]

German Translation

We have received huge support from the German community ever since we announced The Waylanders. At 2018’s Gamescom in Cologne thousands of people tried out our pre-alpha demo and provided us with invaluable feedback. We have also received thousands of comments and messages about the translation of the game into the German language. And on Kickstarter, the German speaking countries have played a major role in the campaign. After the US and Spain (our motherland), Germany is the country with most backers. So we wanted to reward you with a German translation of The Waylanders.

That’s why the stretch goal is now early unlocked and will be available for all of you!

Alpha Access

Many of you have requested it, and now you can have it: The Waylanders Alpha access! From now on, you’ll find it as an add-on available to add to any pledge above the $20 early bird.

You only have to add $10 to your reward and you can enjoy The Waylanders before anyone else!

The Alpha add-on will give you access to the demo 6 months before the launch of the beta. So you can be part of the development of the game and start playing on 2019!

If you need any help including an add-on to your pledge, it’s actually quite simple. An example:

Mike selected the $20 early bird (congrats, you'll get the game at a great price!). But he wants to get the Alpha Access for $10. He needs to manage his pledge and add $10. So, he needs to pledge $30. Then, when we finish the campaign, we'll contact all of you to know which add ons you selected.

We would like to close this update by asking you one more time to please help us during this last few days of the campaign. We are super close! In fact, if each and every one of you added the $10 Alpha Access, we’ll automatically reach the goal! We can do it if we work together!

We hope you like the new add on, the free location and the german translation :)

RPGWatch Feature - The Waylanders Interview

by Myrthos, 16:10

Farflame reached out to Gato Salvaje Studio, for an interview about The Waylanders, and got to ask CEO and narrative director, Sergio Prieto some questions.

RPGWatch: I will start right away with a question concerning an issue players have. It seems that there is a certain skepticism nowadays towards "unknown" indie studios, especially RPG makers. Also if I'm not mistaken your studio didn't make an RPG before. So how would you convince these people? Can you briefly introduce your studio and tell us why you started a CRPG project and why you believe you can do it?

Sergio Prieto: Well, this is a logical concern, we have had many years of experience in video games, and the main thing we have learned is that you can't launch a project while having doubts, and I mean doubts about any aspect of your game: your gameplay, your script, your production pipeline... everything. And with this project we had a focus right from the start, to make sure that we are doing the right things all the time. We looked into having enough, and the best people possible, to create a game like this. We hired Mike Laidlaw and our other consultant, not only because of the script, but also to know if our production process is the best for this kind of game. Mike came here to our studio in Spain during two weeks and had interviews with all of our team, he saw our planning and raised warnings and concerns. Then he help us to build the High Level Narrative in order to make sure that we would have the game that we wanted.

Apart from that, we showed the game at Gamescom to a lot of people, to receive feedback. We focused on gameplay at that moment, because we wanted to see people playing the game and see their reaction. Now we are on Kickstarter to validate the project again, to know if  people really want our project.

We looked into the experience of people that were in the lead during production at Bioware and Obsidian and at the feedback of the players; because before anyone would have any concerns, we wanted to be sure that we didn't have those concerns as well. Right now we are incredibly proud of what we are building. The proof is that there was a lot of media interest that were shown our pre-alpha in Germany or Japan and they really liked what they saw.

The Waylanders - Game Improvements and Add-Ons

by Myrthos, 16:45

This update about The Waylanders covers game imoprovements and add-ons for your pledge.

The people behind The Waylanders pour their hearts and souls into every single detail of the content they create. Characters, environments, textures, VFX, lighting… Sometimes, even after finishing an asset, they analyze it and look for ways to make it even better.

Ever since we showcased our pre-alpha demo at game conferences such as Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show in 2018, we have made several improvements to certain elements of the game. Today we’ll be showing you some of them!

More improvements, also of the character models, can be found at the link.
And they have an add-on for $150, which will give you a life size version of a Mourian sword.

This is not just any add-on. This is a life-size replica of a Mourian sword!

We have reached an agreement with Tier Lab, a company specialized in the handcrafting of swords, armors and other objects for cosplay, exhibitions and even approved items for LARPing!

Best of all, no sword will be identical to any other. Tier Lab, as opposed to many other companies that make every item from a single cast, handcrafts every single item. That’s right, your Mourian sword will be different to any other, it will an exclusive unique item!

The Waylanders - Celtic Locations, New Writer and New Formations

by Myrthos, 00:23

There are three new updates for The Waylanders we have not reported about yet. First there is the update about the Celtic locations you start your adventure in.

Many of the locations you can visit in The Waylanders are based off of real historical sites in Spain, such as the one below:

This location is based on Santa Tecla's hillfort (also known as Santa Trega), a place in the Southwest of Galicia. It's considered a Place of Cultural Interest, and wan inhabited around 2000 years ago
This location is based on Santa Tecla's hillfort (also known as Santa Trega), a place in the Southwest of Galicia. It's considered a Place of Cultural Interest, and wan inhabited around 2000 years ago

In The Waylanders, your adventure begins in the Celtic region of Kaltia, in what is now Galicia in Northwestern Spain.

Kaltia has a lot of places you can visit, rich in nuances and dissimilar from each other. Coastal villages, big forests, necropolis, underground cities, werewolves camps... Let's take a quick look to some Celtic locations you can enjoy on The Waylanders!

....

Furthermore they decided to hire one of the writers who was part of a stretch goal.

The story is one of the most important parts in The Waylanders. That’s the reason why we are collaborating with experienced scriptwriters. In fact, our first stretch goals is to count on Emily Grace Buck, one of the most talented writers in videogames industry.

But we have great news for all of you. She is heavily involved in the campaign and really interested in The Waylanders, so we’ve reached an agreement… Emily is now part of the team!

The Waylanders is still an indie RPG, but we are really happy because she’s an AAA person with the skills to write an AAA story for the game.

This announcement means, Emily is free from her ‘stretch goal jail’, and this is now unlocked, even before reaching the $200,000 goal!

And then there are the new formations:

As you already know, the formation system is one of the most innovative features in The Waylanders.

When we release the Kickstarter campaign, we showed you three formations available in the pre-alpha demo: the orb, the arrow head and the phallanx formations.

In this update, we want to show three new formations. And we can assure these formations are different to any traditional formation you've seen until now. Keep reading!

The Sorcerer Tower is a long-range static formation, made to be protected while it deals great magical damage.

The healer Tree Formation allows you to have a flexible and strong unit, highly resistant to magic and capable of supporting all other units. Advantages to using this strategy vary depending on which allies take part in the formation.

The ranger Star formation allows you to constantly shoot in any direction, plus you can use an ability to switch from having a movable to a static unit, allowing you to attack enemies located at great distances.

Check out the link for some videos about these formations.

The Waylanders - Story Preview

by Myrthos, 13:57

In a recent update the story of the beginning of The Waylanders is provided.

The Celtic Brigantians are on their way to create an unprecedented alliance with the god-like Tuatha de Danaan- the supernatural rulers of the Isle of Ireland. King Ith and his son, the Prince, are hopeful that this will bring a new era of peace to Europe. You're along on his expedition as either a diplomat, protector, or mercenary depending on your origin.

But, tragedy strikes as the negotiations erupt into chaos. Everyone's lives are in peril- including yours!

In order to allow the royalty to escape, you-- with the help of a Mourian Seer and a Druid named Amergin- manage to hold the line. As you become overwhelmed by the forces of the Tuatha, you realize that you've taken on a suicide mission.

Just as you suffer what would otherwise be a death blow, the Seer opens an entrance to the Mourian Underworld. She and Amergin work together, and by combining Mourian and Druidic magicks, they're able to save your life... but at a cost.

Parts of your body have been replaced by Mourian metals. And more shocking... you've been untethered from space and time!

You, and you alone, are developing the ability to travel through time.

You return home to Brigantia to find the land corrupted. It has been overrun by horrible monsters- creatures of pure chaos and rage! Not only that, but the prince has been unseated by a cruel and unyielding Usurper, who has turned the world of the Celts against all magick-users.

By traveling between the Celtic and Medieval eras, you'll discover the source of the monsters, bring peace back to the Celtic realm... and make some friends and lovers along the way!

Now, you know how The Waylanders begins. We hope you like it!

The Waylanders - The Basic Classes

by Hiddenx, 19:39

In Kickstarter update #9 the basic character classes of The Waylanders are explained:

Kickstarter Update #9

[...]

There are many ways to face combat in any RPG: swords, magic, subterfuge... When you customize your character in The Waylanders, you can select between 6 classes, which are called basic classes. We’ll describe each of them, grouped into three types.

FIGHTERS

War is never as difficult as at the front line. Those who throw themselves into battle, covered with reinforced armors and carrying swords, axes, hammers and spears are called fighters. With their courage, and their experience in close combat, fighters can keep your allies safe and inflict high damage to any enemies around them.

There are two fighter’s basic classes: warriors and guardians

Warriors are specialists in slaughtering their opponents. With their superior close-range combat, they are able to carry two weapons at the same time. Their great strength allows them to even grab their rivals and throw them away from the battle.

Warrior features: dual wielding, heavy weapons, short range, melee fight

Unlike the ferocious and impetuous warriors, the guardians have learned to keep their minds cool, even in the heat of battle. They can get the attention of their enemies, stop their attacks with their resistant shields, and pave the way for their allies to finish their opponents.

Guardian features: shield, head to head, mass combat, control

PATHFINDERS

War with swords and axes is the way for those who can withstand the pain of enemy blows, but ... why should things get that far? Pathfinders prefer to end the battle before it begins, using tricks, ranged attacks or deadly techniques.

There are two basic classes within pathfinders: rogues and explorers

Although the rogues have to be even closer than any fighter to finish their opponents, this does not imply that they have to be equally exposed. Their great mobility and ability to create distractions allow these pathfinders to shrink their enemies, until they can finish them with an accurate stab.

Rogue features: daggers, temporary damage, mobility, elusion, lethal execution

Unlike rogues, rangers like to keep a long distance. They usually carry long range weapons, like bows, and they have even tamed wild beasts to help them in combat. Their combat style allows them to aim and shoot with great accuracy, hitting weak points on their rivals.

Ranger features: long range weapons, pets, critical damage

SAGES

Weapon-based combat has been the main engine of the war, but any army knows that the slightest bit of magic can change the course of battle. Whether to heal wounds, or to open one on the enemy, the powers of the sages have an invaluable usefulness in battle.

There are two basic classes: sorcerers and healers

The arcane powers can be manipulated, expanded, concentrated ... and used as one of the most lethal weapons. Sorcerers can release large amounts of energy in focused areas, wreaking havoc among their enemies. Their powers are such that they can even deform reality itself to teleport themselves, and keep attacking their enemies from a safe distance.

Sorcerer features: damage oriented, area attack

According to Celtic beliefs, all magic comes from nature and its constant change. Healers have managed to internalize the knowledge of the earth, summoning the help of the flora and fauna in the battle. This way they can heal the wounds of their allies, and hinder their enemies in combat.

Healer features: healing and protection, buffs, debuffs

Maybe you are wondering ... What are the other 30 classes that are mentioned in The Waylanders main features? Each of them are evolutions of the previous classes. In particular, each basic class has 5 evolutions….

...but that's material for another update! ;)

The Waylanders - The Fomorians

by Myrthos, 12:32

In the eighth update of the Kickstarter for The Waylanders, we learn about The Fomorians, streaming and a way to increase your rewards.

The Fomorians are the original immortal inhabitants of Ireland. After a long, bloody war with the Tuatha de Danaan, they were exiled to a small part of the Mourian Otherworld. Most humans immediately find them sinister-- Fomorians are giants compared to all others, and their exile has forced them to subsist by turning to cannibalism. Their king, the largest of the giants, has the ability to regenerate, so they feed on him in order to survive.

Despite these horrors, the Fomorians are a deeply honorable people, and they've accepted their defeat as their destiny.

Half-Formorians are the descendants of both the Fomorians and the Tuatha. They are the tallest character race that you can play in The Waylanders.

If you play as a Half-Fomorian, your character will have grown up a second class citizen in the Mourian underground, with little knowledge of the outside world. You'll look human enough to most people... though perhaps incredibly tall and a bit odd. As a vassal of the Mourians, you're their gun-for-hire mercenary who has fought on their side in various conflicts throughout time. You arrive in Ireland as a bodyguard, but also as a warning-- that the Mourians remember what the Tuatha did to the Fomorians.

If you want to increase your rewards without transferring any money:

We’re almost at the middle of our Kickstarter campaign, and we need YOUR help to spread the word!

If every backer like you referred just one new person to the campaign, we could make our goal. So....

For each new backer you refer who ends up contributing to the Kickstarter, you’ll receive a reward of $30 credit! Yes, those rewards stack!

You can use all your reward credit in the pledge manager at the end of the campaign to get cool add-ons or even upgrade your reward tier.

And there is a new live streaming session his Wednesday the 31st of October on YouTube, where they will show new content and where you can interact with the developers.

The Waylanders - Updates

by Silver, 10:29

The latest updates for The Waylanders Kickstarter introduces Emma Ríos and Emily Grace Buck and some tidbits of information about the game. The Kickstarter has reached 30% of its goal with 25 days to go.

The Mourians

The ancient and magical race known as Mourians lives in the Otherworld-- they use portals and mystic labyrinths to interact with or even enter our human world. Their bones and eyes are made of a sort of gold, so they have huge reserves of that precious metal.

If you do business with a Mourian, they'll always pay extra for whatever you sell-- often offering a massive quantity of gold for a simple piece of good food. But, never try to cheat them... if you do, their gold will change to coal... forever.

The Waylanders - Kickstarter Live

by Myrthos, 17:54

The Kickstarter for The Waylanders is live now.

Time-Travelling Fantasy RPG, The Waylanders, Launches its Kickstarter Campaign

A Coruña, Spain - October 16, 2018 - Announced in August 2018, The Waylanders has seen its development team at Gato Salvaje Studio hard at work preparing for the launch of the game's Kickstarter campaign which is going live today! With former Bioware lead, Mike Laidlaw (Dragon Age: Origins, Jade Empire, Mass Effect) on board as a creative consultant (as well as a few other high profile writers we can't mention yet), The Waylanders is aiming for a $150,000 USD goal and will provide players with an engaging narrative featuring impactful character development, unique companion romance options, and a deeply technical combat system.

An exciting fantasy RPG, The Waylanders showcases a unique, party-based experience that time travels between two distinct eras - Celtic and Medieval - covering a rich history that has been largely overlooked in video game lore up to this point. Choices made in one time period can have dire consequences in the other, meaning players will feel the impact of their decisions in surprising and shocking ways.

One of the game's biggest features is its new and innovative approach to battle with the inclusion of combat formations. Fusing combatants together into a combined, more powerful character offers players a deep combination of tactics when approaching conflict. You can find out all about the combat formations in the Kickstarter video;

KEY FEATURES
  • Real-time combat with tactical pause, character creation, and 36 classes (6 basic and 30 advanced)

  • Play from a top-down isometric perspective that can be shifted to a third person perspective on the fly

  • Story and combat inspired by RPG classics Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights 2

  • 12 different combat formations (2 per class) sees players fuse characters to provide varied and technical combat options

Here is the video on combat formations:

RPGWatch @ Gamescom - The Waylanders Preview

by Myrthos, 12:25

The Waylanders was announced right before Gamescom,  has a story with Spanish influences and time traveling. Here is what I learned at Gamescom.

The Waylanders is a universe that has been realized as both a video game and a board game. The developers were inspired by games such as Dragon's Age and Baldur's Gate and Mike Laidlaw is working with them on the story as a consultant. The game is inspired by the myths of the Spanish region of Galicia. The main story is about time travel and takes place in the Celtic era in Brigantia and the middle ages, where Christianity has replaced a lot of the Celtic history. Note for those who try to look Brigantia up, this is not the English Celtic area, but the Spanish one, which has a mythological origin.
Only the main character will be able to travel through time, but some of your party members might have an incarnation in the other time era. You will need to travel back and forth in order to stop the seed of evil that has been planted in the past. You stop it by using the right combination of choices in both time eras and eventually kill the one who is responsible. However as none of that was implemented, it could not be shown.

The Waylanders - Video Interview @GameReactor

by Silver, 04:15

Gamereactor interviewed Gato Salvaje's Fernando Prieto and asked about The Waylanders. Video is at the link.

"At this moment we're developing a tabletop project and an RPG videogame", explains the executive producer. "But the main project is the video game. It is a classic party RPG. You can play it from a third-person camera or with a top-down isometric one."

Other than the two different views in-game, a fresh twist to the game's narrative is that you'll have to travel back and forth through time to "protect history" as it actually happens. Thus, you go from the Celtic period in the 5th to 6th century to the medieval times in the 12th century. And, as Prieto describes, you may have to live different lives and work different jobs when characters wake up in different ages.

The Waylanders - Mike Laidlaw on board

by Silver, 06:03

@PC Gamer The Waylanders is a real time with pause RPG about time travel. The game is fully single player and inspired by Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dragon Age: Origins.

The Waylanders has real-time combat with a tactical pause option, and it's inspired by a bunch of RPG favourites, like Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dragon Age: Origins, which you'll probably note from the video. You can play it from a top-down view, or move the camera to third-person, and 12 changeable party formations let you experiment with combat tactics in the game. You'll be able to romance characters, too. In an interesting twist, however, you'll be able to time travel between two different periods.
