Thronebreaker - Review @ Worthplaying

by Hiddenx, 20:00

Worthplaying has reviewed the card-RPG Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales:

PC Review - Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a single player role-playing game set in the world of The Witcher that combines narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics.

In 2015, it released a fantastic RPG in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and for many, the card collecting game Gwent was a captivating piece of side content. Three years later, CDPR has spun off Gwent into its own full-fledged story-based card game, and the results are nothing short of a masterpiece. With fantastic writing, gripping game mechanics, and fun side-quests to break up the tense drama, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a masterclass example of a well-crafted card game. It takes great strides in revolutionizing the CCG genre, and it's one of my favorite games released in 2018.

Gwent was a fantastic addition to an already vast collection of content in Witcher 3. To spin off the card game into its own stand-alone game though, CDPR needed to do much more with it, and in that regard, the title has more than exceeded my expectations. Forget everything you know about Gwent. This is a whole different animal with new rules, significantly more depth, and a ton of new factions and cards to explore. The end result is a competent card game that can compete with the best card games available today.

[...]

Overall, Thronebreaker is a revolutionary game within the CCG genre, and I hope other companies take note. With a 40-hour story to support an engaging card game, there's nothing else quite like it, and its unique nature is to its overall benefit. It's made me realize how much I can and do enjoy card games when they're done right. I always loved the idea of CCGs, but it often takes a lot of time and grinding to get up to par with others. CD Projekt Red remedies this by slowly teaching the complexities of Gwent to the player with an engaging plot to keep players enthralled all the way through. It's time to take all my hard-earned rewards and experience gained in Thronebreaker and have my ego obliterated by a horde of Nekkers controlled by a 13-year-old kid — and I couldn't be more excited.

Screenrant has reviewed Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales:

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales Review - Gwent At Its Finest

The Witcher universe has spawned a few of the most enduring ideals in video games at the moment. Geralt, the protagonist of CD Projekt Red's trilogy of Witcher RPGs, is beginning to appear in a multitude of different franchises, his name recognition making him well worth the addition. Gwent, the card game introduced in the third game of the trilogy, quickly took on a life of its own, as players lamented having put Geralt's journey on hold for dozens of hours so that they could play villagers for their cards. Gwent went on to become, well, Gwent, a stand-alone collectible card game with an online competitive scene and tournament support akin to other stalwarts of the genre like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone.
[...]
Overall, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is by far the best representation of Gwent that CD Projekt Red has developed so far, and a worthy adventure RPG that deserves your time even if you aren't the biggest fan of card games. Thronebreaker could be, and hopefully is, the beginning of another long and fruitful Witcher-based IP, because this is a game that achieves something special.

Score: 4.5/5 - Must Play!

Thronebreaker - Review @ COG

by Hiddenx, 15:41

COG has reviewed The Witcher: Thronebreaker:

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales Review – A Tale to Remember

I’m not usually one to get sidetracked by minigames set within larger open worlds, but that all changed when I first played through The Witcher 3. I spent hours upon hours playing Gwent, the card game within the Witcher universe you can have Geralt play in his spare time, fully absorbed by its simple-yet-addictive card play. It didn’t surprise me, then, when CD Projekt RED decided to expand Gwent, initially into its own online multiplayer platform, into an entirely new game with the cards as its core gameplay mechanic. Enter Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, a compelling RPG that uses Gwent in smart ways to convey the strategic and unpredictable nature of a battlefield.
[...]
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales could have been a lackluster, uninspired spinoff in an attempt to capitalize off the Witcher’s success, but it is so much more than that. Sure, I have some minor gripes, such as the lack of a mini-map and guide markers, or the anticlimactic final battle, but they all seem trivial when looking at what Thronebreaker accomplishes as a whole. The intricately layered story and carefully crafted characters and writing are some of the best I’ve seen this year, and the card play is more rewarding than it’s ever been before. Whether or not you are a fan of the Witcher series, or even card games in general, Thronebreaker deserves your attention.

Thronebreaker - GOG Exclusive

by Silver, 09:24

@GameWatcher Thronebreaker will be GOG exclusive. Additionally IGN went hands-on with Thronebreaker.

Up until now, we've kind of expected for Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales to follow the usual CD Projekt RED release schedule, where the game would simultaneously come out on every major video game marketplace, or that perhaps they'd stagger the game's release on other services a bit.

This has now been proven wrong, however, with the launch of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales' pre-order website, which very obviously points out that the game will be an exclusive GoG release.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - Full RPG

by Silver, 20:45

@PCGamesN Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales (formerly known as Gwent) will now be a full RPG more than a card game.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is the newly-revised title for Gwent’s single-player campaign, and the latest word from CD Projekt suggests that’s expanded into more of a full RPG than a card game. It will be a standalone release separate from Gwent, and will be a proper game purchase, though there’s no word yet on what the price will be.

RPGWatch @ Gamescom - Gwent: Thronebreaker

by Myrthos, 11:35

Here is the first Gamescom article of this year, starting out with Gwent: Thronebreaker. A single player campaign based on the Gwent card game.

Gwent: Thronebreaker is a new single player game, based on the Gwent card-game, taking place in the Witcher universe during the second Nilfgaardian invasion in 1267. In light of this Nilfgaardian threat, several rulers came together and formed alliances. One of them being Meve, the queen of the twin realms Lyria and Rivia. In her absence her son William ruled these twin realms, but not that very well as the threat from bandits has become much bigger in her absence and she just learned that a load of gold has been stolen from her tax collectors. Meve decides to personally look into the matter.

The story is said to be dark. There are evil things going on and you will learn about them through the conversations you are having. Thronebreaker offers an interactive dialog system for this, where you get to choose how you want to approach certain situations and how you want to react during conversations. All characters that are involved will remember your choices and this will impact the relation you have with them, which might lead to big or smaller consequences in the future. All dialogues are fully voiced and will be localized in the same 10 languages as Gwent is available in.
