Titan Quest II - The Goddesses of Fate

by Hiddenx, 18:13

Learn more about the The Goddesses of Fate in Titan Quest II:

The Goddesses of Fate

Today we want to talk about one of the mythological elements of Titan Quest II that we first featured in our announcement trailer: the Moirai, the three goddesses of fate.

Fate in Greek Myth

The Ancient Greeks were fascinated by the concept of fate. Are our lives laid out for us, like a play with the script already written, or do we forge ahead, blind and alone, through chaos? The Ancient Greeks certainly thought that it was the former, and they believed that three goddesses, called the Moirai, were the ones in charge.

Three Sisters

The first of the Moirai, Klotho, “The Spinner,” who uses her spindle to weave the thread of mortal lives and determines the hour of their birth. Then comes Lachesis, “The Allotter”, who uses her measuring rod to determine the length of a mortal’s life, and how it will be lived. Then, finally, is Atropos, “She Who Cannot Be Turned” who snips the threads of life as they end. In Titan Quest II, the three Moirai are three aspects of one entity, sharing a face, but at different stages of life.

Balancing the Familiar and Fresh

For fans of Titan Quest, the announcement of the long-awaited sequel Titan Quest II last year was a day to celebrate. The original, which introduced some innovative mechanics, such as the dual class system to the ARPG genre, has long been considered one of the genre’s staples. While we are still a ways out from charging headlong back to the world of Titan Quest, I recently had the opportunity to participate in a closed playtest for Titan Quest II.

Titan Quest II - About Masteries

by Hiddenx, 16:21

Learn more about masteries in Titan Quest II:

Combining two masteries to form a class

In this update, we want to share a little information about our masteries. In Titan Quest II, just like in the first Titan Quest, you will be combining two masteries to form your own class.

In the initial Early Access release, you will have access to the Earth, Storm and Warfare masteries, with many more coming as we drop our updates. You’ll be picking these early in the campaign, as we want you to experience the possible synergies between them without much of a gap between the two unlocks.

Our overarching goal is to make you feel like you’re a hero blessed by the gods themselves, possessing superhuman powers. Improving and growing your powers will be a perilous journey, but this will be necessary in order to survive against Nemesis.

As for the actual mechanics, you will be able to equip a maximum of 10 skills in your ability bar. This will allow for a wide range of playstyles, such as ones where you focus on a primary damage skill and a handful of support skills, to builds where you utilize several alternate primary damage skills with several support skills. Titan Quest II will greatly reward you when you work out skill synergies, but will also cater to those who heavily invest into a more limited toolkit.

In past blog posts we already mentioned that we will be offering separate active and passive points within skill trees, and that your active abilities can be customized via modifiers. So this time, let’s talk a bit more about what’s in the masteries instead, and we’ll also show some modifier examples.

Titan Quest II - About Questing

by Hiddenx, 16:54

Learn more about questing in Titan Quest II:

Putting the “Quest” in Titan Quest II

By now, some of you have already had the chance to play a demo version of Titan Quest II at Gamescom. But even if you haven’t, we want to use this month’s update to give you a look at the content included in the demo and what it means for our approach to quests, narrative, and exploration.

Introducing the Story
In Medias Res
The Gamescom demo starts in the middle of the action. In the full game, you will play a short prologue chapter before washing ashore at the point where the Gamescom demo begins. This is a more narrative-driven section of the game, as it introduces the player to two major characters, their main quest goal for a new chapter, and the overall chapter conflict.
The player character wakes up on a strange shore, crawling with monsters, having just narrowly escaped Nemesis’s wrath. They have a mission to seek the Moirai, the goddesses of Fate, to learn how to defeat Nemesis, but with little idea where they are or how to find the Moirai, they first have to explore their surroundings.
It soon becomes clear that all is not well here. Evidence of recent destruction litters the beach, and there are ichthian battle parties on the prowl.

An Ally
Fortunately, the player discovers that they are not entirely alone. This section of the game introduces the player character to the divine horse Areion for the first time. Areion is the son of Poseidon and Demeter, and he once belonged to the mighty Herakles. But currently, he is trapped in a small charm.
Areion acts as the player character’s guide to the world of Titan Quest II, seeking to advise and protect the player on their quest to defeat Nemesis. He features heavily in this section, where he is first introduced, but takes on more of a supporting role as the game goes on.

A Missing God
With Areion’s help, the player learns that they need a god’s assistance to open the gates to the Moirai temple. Fortunately, Areion has an old friend in the area: Glaukos, god of seafarers. Unfortunately, it seems Glaukos has gone missing. The demo ends before the player can find out what happened to Glaukos, but the search for the god is a major element of the main questline of this chapter of Titan Quest II.

The Ichthian Threat
In addition to the player character’s personal goal to find Glaukos and reach the Moirai, this section of the game also introduces the central conflict of this region. The ichthians, monstrous fish-men, have managed to sabotage a dam and flood the farmlands below. Pyrgos village, the main settlement in the region, sits high atop the cliffs, but still needs protection from ichthians coming up from the beaches. The player character is pulled into helping with Pyrgos’s defenses by an eccentric old man named Philon.

Quests, Events, and Exploration
The Gamescom demo shows off many of the different content types featured in Titan Quest II.

Fated Quests
We call our main questline “Fated Quests,” because they are destined to be completed, and they tell the story of the player character’s battle with Nemesis.
These quests tend to feature the bigger narrative moments of the game, but also some of our most exciting gameplay. Big boss fights, dramatic escapes, tricky encounters, and one-of-a-kind events serve to make these quests memorable and fun to play.
In the Gamescom demo, the quest “A Strange Shore,” in which the player is introduced to Areion and Philon, is a Fated Quest, and it acts as the backbone of the demo. But there’s much more in store for players who wander off the beaten path.

World Quests
The Fates do not dictate everything. The world of Titan Quest II is full of opportunities for heroism, glory, or personal enrichment. World quests are discovered both through exploration and talking to NPCs you encounter on the way.
Players who reached the end of the Gamescom demo were able to find the world quest “Cages in the Dark” and free some of the very important citizens of Pyrgos from the ichthians.
World Quests can take a lot of different forms. They can focus on a mechanic, a mini-boss, a character, a twist, piece of mythology, or the central conflict of the chapter. You might find yourself tangling with a treacherous naiad, fighting the ghost of an ancient war hero, or saving someone’s life from a Gorgon snakebite.
Our World Quests are designed to be exploration-friendly. For example, if the player finds the cave full of prisoners in the Gamescom demo before they find the official questgiver, they can free the prisoners right away; no need to wait for a questgiver to ask them to.

Exploration Events
One of our big goals for Titan Quest II is to encourage and reward exploration. So besides our Fated and World Quests, we’ve included Exploration Events throughout the world. These are small encounters--a talking jar, a statue of Herakles surrounded by mysterious offering bowls, an encounter with a battle-hardened ichthian commander--which do not get tracked in your quest log and which are designed to be found and completed while exploring. Paying attention to your surroundings pays off, as each of these events has a unique flavor and rewards you for completing it.

The Gamescom demo features four of these Exploration Encounters. Which ones did you find?

We hope you liked this look behind the curtain of the content featured in our Gamescom demo. See you next month!

Titan Quest 2 builds on the best parts of Diablo’s Greek fantasy rival

Titan Quest 2 marks the grand return of the Greek mythology ARPG, and my Gamescom showing already has me dreaming about potential builds.

If you love games like Diablo, you’re spoiled for choice nowadays. Last Epoch’s 1.0 launch arrived to great success, the Path of Exile 2 beta is on the horizon as its predecessor marches on unabated, and Blizzard’s own Diablo 4 has found its feet as it looks towards the Vessel of Hatred DLC. But there’s at least one more notable ARPG on my radar right now, and Titan Quest 2 avoids the live service structure of its contenders in favor of a complete game that’s packed with replayability. I sat down with the Grimlore Games team at Gamescom 2024, and came away excited by how TQ2 is building on the best parts of the original.

Titan Quest II - Combat Pillars

by Hiddenx, 22:00

Learn more about Titan Quest 2 gameplay:

Titan Quest II - The road to gameplay

One of the most common points of feedback we've been getting from the community is that you want to see gameplay. You won’t have to wait much longer! Tune into the THQ Nordic Showcase on August 2nd to see the first Titan Quest II gameplay trailer!

But there’s more! You will also be able to play Titan Quest II at Gamescom from August 21-25.

Combat pillars

Before getting to the meat of our article today, we wanted to offer more clarity on what kind of aRPG gameplay Titan Quest II offers and that is deeply rooted in what the original Titan Quest offered.

  • Titan Quest II is a classic-style top-down aRPG game, with a modern, yet traditional, take on combat.
The original Titan Quest’s enemies were always characterful, and we're doubling down on this by offering a wide variety of enemy types. Stronger foes stand out with their hard-hitting abilities that you must answer in some form (for example, by dodging or preparing a strong defensive build), while weaker enemies are dangerous in numbers, but you can quickly eliminate them with well-placed abilities.
  • Epic boss fights are also part of the Titan Quest DNA. (Remember Typhon?) Expect a large variety of abilities from our bosses with a clear sequence that you are rewarded for learning.
  • Your active abilities come from your choice of two masteries. You can equip a large number of abilities at the same time and customize them using modifiers to personalize your build. Masteries also offer separate passive abilities that will drive much of your power scaling. You can choose feats for your passive skills, which add further bonuses.
  • Level-ups award active skill, passive skill, and attribute points. Attributes and their connected secondary attributes determine what gear you can wear, and they scale your damage and other stats. At certain thresholds, they also unlock skill modifiers that are always active in the background.
  • On death, the enemies that killed you (and those nearby) respawn at full power. You respawn in the nearest hub, but teleporters are placed across the world for convenience. Expect them near boss locations in particular. An on-death portal helps you get back into action quickly. Co-op parties need to initiate activities like boss fights together and are blocked from leaving until the fight is won… or lost.

Titan Quest II - Mythological Level Design

by Hiddenx, 19:18

Learn more about the level design of Titan Quest II:

Mythological Level Design

Long ago, in the year AD 2006, we first embarked on an epic journey that began in ancient Greece. Thrust into the heartland of legend and myth itself, we discovered fetid lairs, explored Mycenaean ruins, and conquered the great Labyrinth of King Minos.

The core element that connects all of these memorable moments is of course the unique and cherished setting of Titan Quest. In order to create an experience worthy of the original, the world of Titan Quest II is being handcrafted from the ground up, and today we want to take a deeper look into what this means.

A Setting of Mythic Proportions
When exploring the world of Titan Quest II you will discover many points of interest--from stately temples to lairs of mythological beasts and the realms of divine beings. Some are along the beaten path, while others are secluded, offering greater mystery and greater rewards, but also deadlier encounters to overcome.

We’ve designed our locations with the history and mythology of ancient Greece in mind. The player might stumble upon ancient ruins that reflect the the style of Bronze Age Mycenaean civilization, while locations more contemporary to the setting of Titan Quest II draw inspiration from the Archaic era. Doric temples and architecture showcase classical Greek style with simplistic columns and detailed upper trims.

In the example above, we have a ruined Doric shrine, surrounded by cascading waterfalls overlooking the turquoise coasts of the Peloponnese. Perhaps it was once used as a pilgrimage site for sailors or fisherman to seek good fortune before their voyage, but now it is overrun and defiled by ichthians. Environmental storytelling like this is an essential part of our level design process and helps reinforce the theme and function of each location. This is just one of many side areas you can come across.

Open World Potential
Titan Quest II’s world is a blend of open roaming spaces and structured points of interest. Our roaming areas are tailored toward freedom of exploration, environmental interaction, verticality, and uncovering secrets. Ladders can be climbed, ledges jumped, and if you look closely, you might even notice that it’s possible to interact with a part of the environment to create a new way forward. Epic vista points reveal glorious panoramic views of the picturesque, handcrafted world.

Meanwhile, smaller side locations and structured points of interest break up the open world, offering opportunities for grand adventures, like a harrowing mountain climb leading to a gryphon’s nest. The world itself provides player guidance, and we're sure you'll be pleased to see the classic 'zone torches' return!

Handcrafting each area means we can use navigation features and really reward those who want to explore every nook and cranny. Keep your eye out for hidden paths and ledges to jump from--you never know what’s waiting on the other side!

These new ways of traversing the world also compliment the verticality of our environments with deep canyons, coastal cliffs along pristine beaches, and backdrops of beautiful Grecian farmlands hinting at where your next adventure or challenge awaits.

Mythological Legacy
Finally, what would Titan Quest be without mythology? This is quite literally where the magic of Titan Quest II comes from, and we’ve designed the moment to moment experience to emphasize a feeling of wonder and myth as you step into the world.

You never know what might be waiting for you just ahead. From towering colossi of the Olympian pantheon, to ancient Trireme shipwrecks yet to be plundered, or even a sunken temple where the remains of ornate statues and sacred chambers, once dedicated to the great sea gods, now lie encrusted with barnacles as the ocean claims them back. A ruined shrine with a mysterious riddle could be an opportunity to win the favor of a god, while a relic of the Titans might be hidden underground, waiting to turn the unsuspecting into monsters. Attention to detail is key to ensuring that all these locations contribute to the end goal of crafting a world worthy of myth and legend.

With these pillars, we hope to create a world that captures all the magic of the original Titan Quest while delivering a rich, modern ARPG experience. What sorts of environments are you most excited to explore in Titan Quest II? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks Couchpotato!

Titan Quest II - Mythical Beasts

by Hiddenx, 08:12

Learn more about Mythical Beasts in Titan Quest II:

Mythical Beasts

In our March update, we detailed the ichthian faction, but alluded to how not all types of enemies in Titan Quest II form factions. The boss enemies that you encounter are perfect examples of this. Usually fighting alone, these enemies will generally be some of the most lethal encounters you will come across. In today’s update, we give you a glimpse of two of our minibosses: the gryphon and the hippokampos.

Gryphon
Mythologically, gryphons hail from Skythia, a region in eastern Europe and central Asia, where a tribe of them is said to sit atop a hoard of treasure. Like many monsters in Greek mythology, they are a hybrid creature, with a lion’s body and an eagle’s head and wings. When a gryphon moves into the neighborhood, there’s bound to be trouble, as they are known for picking off sheep, goats, pigs, and even wild boars for their supper. A fight with a gryphon is the perfect opportunity for a fledgling Greek hero to prove their mettle. But be warned--gryphons can be crafty creatures.

In combat, the gryphon’s most powerful ability has it take off into the air and utilize a powerful swooping attack. As an agile creature, it will also be capable of pouncing around the player, lashing out several times in a row where least expected. This then gets rounded out by several variants of regular melee attacks. While this is the first and easiest miniboss you will come across, we still intend for it to pose a threat and test your combat fundamentals.

Hippokampos
Hippokampi are what the ancient Greeks believed the adult form of the sea-horse looked like, and you can see that reflected in their colorful, almost feather-light appearance. In the world of Titan Quest II, they were coveted by the ancient Mycenaeans for their menageries. As mounts to the Nereids and chariot-horses for Poseidon, they can be quite dangerous when provoked.

The hippokampos is somewhat more advanced in combat than the gryphon. Utilizing a mixture of cold and lightning damage, it will hit the player with a barrage of powerful attacks, such as a telegraphed, but sudden geyser eruption, as well as a powerful water jet followed up by a stunning lightning strike. It will also be able to hurl ice shards at the player, and make use of several melee attacks, as well as a defensive barrier. What’s more, we are experimenting with making this creature completely immune to crowd control effects (e.g. stun, freezing) outside of telegraphed windows of vulnerability. These aspects together will require that the player makes use of all they have learned so far. A good sense of attack timings, movement during combat, and evasion will be rewarded.

As far as our vision for these boss encounters goes, studious players that learn the moves of these creatures will be best equipped to respond to them--it’s all about building a rhythm and achieving a clean execution. To aid this learning process, these creatures perform clear sequences of attacks, making it so that clean play can result in victory on a first attempt, provided you survive as you are learning the enemy’s moves! Mind you, death carries a heavy price in Titan Quest II. The entire encounter that killed you (whether it’s a boss or not) gets fully reset, and you will respawn in the previous hub (convenient teleport options will be provided, though). These creatures will certainly have the tools to put players down when they’re making several mistakes. Even defeats can teach useful lessons, however.
You can also always choose to work on getting a little stronger before returning for your next attempt. You can level up beyond the current area’s level, or simply farm for items that help against the specific boss in question, such as via resistances. On the other hand, if you are looking for even more of a challenge, you can raise the difficulty by invoking rituals.

Lastly, these fights are not one-off experiences, as you will be able to re-summon these beasts in order to reap the rewards again and again. We will talk about these rewards in more detail soon.

Titan Quest II - The Ichthians

by Hiddenx, 16:36

Learn more about the Ichthians in Titan Quest II:

The Ichthians in Titan Quest II

In Titan Quest II’s ancient Greece, human civilization is threatened by all manner of monsters and mythical beasts. Some of these enemies you will face act independently, either by choice or simply acting on instinct. But others will be more organized, forming a coherent faction with their own combat doctrine.

One of the early factions you will encounter is the Ichthians. You might remember seeing Ichthians in the original Titan Quest. They are one of the game’s original additions to Greek mythology, and for Titan Quest II we’ve expanded their lore to hint at how these monstrous fish-men came to be and to tie them into existing myth. The Ichthians are a monstrous hybrid of human and sea monster, with a vicious hatred of the god Glaukos and all the humans under his protection. Using their own brand of magic and tools and weapons improvised from their aquatic environment, the Ichthians are able to fight on land - though they do not like to stray far from the water.

Titan Quest II - Sparta

by Hiddenx, 10:49

Learn more about the Spartans in Titan Quest II:

Sparta in Titan Quest II

Sparta. Whether the name calls to mind Lacedaemon, Helen of Troy, Leonidas, or the Peloponnesian Wars, Sparta’s legend stands apart. In classical times, its influence stretched across the Peloponnesian peninsula and as far away as Italy.

So naturally, we wanted to feature Sparta in Titan Quest II. But we didn’t want these to be the same old Spartans. In keeping with our philosophy, we wanted to present a unique and fantastical twist that was nevertheless rooted in the history and classical stories that inspire us.

Ours is a world in which the monsters of myth are real, and they pose a real threat to the humans who live among them. Until recently, the Spartans and their powerful military served the role of protectors, defending the towns and villages of Greece from these mythological threats.

Titan Quest II - Gameworld created by Hand

by Hiddenx, 16:46

Gamepressure reports that Titan Quest II is handmade:

Exploration in Titan Quest 2 Expected a Treat. Devs Refused Procedural World

Grimlore Games studio boasted that the entire world in Titan Quest 2 is being created by hand, thus without the use of procedural generation.

Titan Quest II is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing upcoming action RPGs. People waiting for this game should be interested in the article published on Steam, in which the developers describe the way of constructing the game world.

  • First and foremost, the devs decided that they won't use procedural generation. Instead, every element of the locations visited by players will be created by hand. The developers claim that this is the only way to design locations that offer genuine fun through exploration, with new surprises waiting around every corner.
  • The first Titan Quest excelled in its impressively realized world of mythological ancient Greece, and the sequel's devs have put in a lot of effort to evoke a similar atmosphere.
  • In the game, we will find locations realistically recreating Greek sceneries accompanied by places of a mythological nature. In the latter case, the developers took inspiration from actual local villages and temples while also amplifying fantastical elements.

Titan Quest II - Preview

by Hiddenx, 18:05

Dualshockers reacts to the announcement of Titan Quest 2:

Titan Quest 2 Is The 'Mythological Sunny Diablo' I've Been Waiting For

We need more diversity in the genre dominated by grim and gory games.

Highlights

  • The distinctive features of Titan Quest, such as its unique loot system and absence of level-scaling, set it apart from other ARPGs like Diablo 4 and Path of Exile.
  • While the original creators of Titan Quest won't be involved in the sequel, the development team is using the cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5.
  • Exciting features like hybrid classes are also expected.

In case you've missed it, Titan Quest 2 is real, and is officially coming from Spellforce 3 developer Grimlore Games. I'm genuinely excited about this reveal. Unlike many players out there who might've kicked off their ARPG journey with Diablo 2, it was the original Titan Quest that sparked my passion for this genre, and what a game it was! As a big fan of Greek mythology, I was instantly drawn in by its setting—only to be welcomed by a sprawling game with an enormous world, near-perfect character class system, rewarding loot, and those epic boss fights against mythical monsters.

Titan Quest stands out from other games in its league, such as Diablo, due to a variety of distinctive features. Its loot system is one notable example. The game is stacked with an array of unique items tied to specific regions, but what really takes the cake is that it's not just a matter of luck with random drops from enemies, as you'd find in games like Diablo 4 or Path of Exile. In Titan Quest, each enemy you face is kitted out with gear–armor, weapons, jewelry–and once you defeat them, you can snag these goodies for yourself. One day, you might be squaring off against a fierce Satyr warrior who's brandishing a luminous legendary spear, and that spear was yours if you could defeat it.

The action RPG Titan Quest II has been announced:

Titan Quest II | Announcement Trailer

Return to the classic mythology-inspired setting of Titan Quest and go toe-to-toe with legendary monsters as you journey across a fantastical reimagining of ancient Greece.

Nemesis, Goddess of Retribution, is out of control. She is corrupting the Threads of Fate and condemning all those who oppose her to eternal punishment - including you. Take up your weapon, fight alongside gods, and change fate itself in order to stop Nemesis, free those she’s punished, and weave your own epic tale.

From the creators of SpellForce 3 comes a handcrafted action RPG for a new generation of mythical heroes.

A World of Myth and Monsters
Set out on an adventure worthy of myth that takes you from picturesque beaches, to serene Greek temples, to places where no mortal has ever ventured, including the mysterious realm of the Moirai themselves. Battle classic creatures from Greek myth and the original Titan Quest, including Ichthians, Centaurs, Satyrs, Harpies, Sirens, Gryphons, and many, many more.

Exploration-Focused Campaign
Pay close attention to your surroundings! The world is full of mysteries and secrets to discover. Legendary monsters lurk in hidden groves, and you never know when you will end up face-to-face with a god. Visit memorable towns full of life and intrigue. The conversations you engage in and the items you find along your journey can lead to surprising discoveries, or they might just hold the key to stopping Nemesis. This is your adventure.

A Challenge Fit for a Hero
Heroic deeds require heroic effort. The enemies you face are far from defenseless - dodge and counter their attacks, then overwhelm them with a well-timed flurry of blows. Powerful rituals allow you to freely control the game’s difficulty, while deep character customization systems ensure that there’s always a good reason to replay.

Key Features

Flexible character system: In Titan Quest 2, you are in control of your own fate. Customize your hero, then form your own class by combining two masteries. Build your character around the strengths and weakness of both masteries, exploring different combinations of skill modifiers, attributes, and items to create your own hybrid class and find your favorite playstyle. Grow your powers from those of a young mortal to a hero to rival the gods themselves!

Meaningful loot: Every item serves a function, and every character class has many options when it comes to finding the perfect equipment. Even the most common spear can be upgraded via affix crafting, and with the right ingredients, you may even forge it into a unique item spoken of only in legend!

Challenging action RPG combat: Enemies form factions and work together, combining their unique skills and abilities to keep you on your toes. Use the deep character build system and access every skill at your disposal to vanquish them in this unique action RPG experience.

A beautiful, handcrafted world rooted in Greek myth: Encounter stunning vistas and deep caverns, and traverse the world with your divine mount, Areion. Use the powers of the gods to uncover secret locations and explore lovingly designed levels full of verticality.

Online multiplayer: Join up with friends to take on the Goddess of Retribution. Like Jason and the Argonauts, sometimes you need a group of heroes for your journey.

Rich and immersive sound: An atmospheric soundtrack blends traditional Greek music with modern orchestral elements to create epic, memorable themes, drawing you into Titan Quest 2's unique world.
