Ultima Online - New Legacy

by Hiddenx, 17:55

MMORPG reports that Ultima Online celebrates the 23rd anniversary by announcing Ultima Online New Legacy:

Ultima Celebrates 23rd Anniversary By Announcing Ultima Online New Legacy

loading...

Announced during a livestream today, Ultima Online: New Legacy, as well as released a shiny new trailer to celebrate the announcement. The MMO is meant to be a brand new shard, forgoing the current trend of bringing cassic MMOs as they existing at launch to life again in a modern world.

"We asked a simple question: 'What is your Britannian Legacy?,"' UO designer Greg Havlusch explained during a celebration livestream today. "And trhe response was overwhelming. And what it showed us was, just like us, people who have had a chance to experience Ultima Online have an incredible connection to it: the nostalgia, the friendships [...] You just can't find that anymore. And started thinking and talking about how we can recreate that. And that's where this idea of Ultima Online: New Legacy came from, that is our ultimate goal: to recreate that nostalgia you once felt when you played UO, without having to be bogged down and face the barriers of entry that you would otherwise face trying to get into a gameworld that is 23 years old."

Ultima Online: New Legacy is leaning into creating a place for new players to jump into the MMO, as well as capture the nostalgia returning veterans can feel about jumping back into the world. New Legacy is the first new shard the team has released in 15 years, and will have an all new ruleset aimed at making the experience more intuitive, including changes to skill and gear progression, resource gathering, crafting and more. The New Legacy shard will be available to free-to-play accounts, though no official date for its release has been given just yet.

Thanks Lucky Day!

Ultima Online - 5 Stories of Murder & Theft

by Aubrielle, 09:37

PC Gamer's Ultima Online retrospective takes us back to the brutal age of griefing and murder that, for some, makes it a classic hardcore RPG.

Ultima Online turned 19 today and despite being so outdated, few PC games inspire nostalgia quite like Richard 'Lord British' Garriott's first MMO. Unlike most modern MMOs—ignoring EVE Online of course—Ultima Online is unique because it's the closest thing to a Dungeons and Dragons campaign gone massively multiplayer. It's sometimes bizarre, always hectic, and wonderfully intimate. Without all the modern luxuries of global chat or automated trade systems, players had to interact with each other in ways that gave rise to friendships, rivalries, and devastating betrayals. Oh yeah, Ultima Online was hardcore as hell too. Griefing and player killing were the laws of the land, and death wasn't just a slap on the wrist—you could lose everything.

Today, few people would probably ever want to spend their time playing in such a ruthless game, and later expansions would try and curb players' appetite for tears by discouraging slaughter. But of all the amazing stories spawned from online games, few are as memorable and hilarious as the ones that come from Ultima Online. To celebrate its birthday and the legacy that would shape an entire genre of MMOs, here are just a few of my favorites. They might not be the most sprawling tales, but the strength of Ultima Online was never how 'epic' it could be. Instead, it was all about those little moments that would happen week to week that made the world of Britannia come alive.

More.

Ultima Online - Interview @ MMORPG

by Myrthos, 21:22

MMORPG interviews Development Manager Calvin Crowner to talk about the game's 12 year anniversary and the Stygian Abyss expansion.

MMORPG.com: MMOs have come and gone, what keeps Ultima Online still alive after 12 years of game play?

Calvin Crowner: I wish I could come up with a blanket answer for this question. It's a combination of things. Part of it is a community that is quite set on what to expect from the social elements, role-playing, and the simple hack and slash gameplay that Ultima Online offers. There are people that have their short-term forays into other games, and then find that for all the pretty graphics, the fundamental "game" under the graphics lacks what UO has to offer. Also, simply put, Ultima has been around so long that a lot of the things the game has iterated on; made mistakes on; and recovered from; has made it a stronger gameplay experience in the long run. Players are drawn to that.

Ultima Online - Kingdom Reborn Review @ TTH

by Woges, 21:14

TTH have articulated their opinion into this review.

It may not be shiny, it may not be fast, but Ultima Online has more depth of character and community than virtually any other game on the market today. They’ve been going strong for over 10 years now. If that doesn’t tell you they have to be doing something right, then I have no idea what in the world would. I still feel the game needs a lot more variety in character races, classes, and customization options to bring it closer in line with what today’s players expect from their chosen form of entertainment. If they could finally make a massive upgrade to the graphics engine, that just might be enough to bring Ultima Online back into the mainstream list of today’s games.

Ultima Online - Stygian Abyss still in Development

by Woges, 02:53

Calvin Crowner informs that UO: Stygian Abyss is still in development dispite the recent layoff announcement from EA.

I wanted to pass on that with the recent announcement of earning from Electronic Arts that the Ultima Online team is still intact and still pressing forward on both the Stygian Abyss Expansion, and supporting the Live Game. In addition, we are still moving forward with the Event Moderator Program. I know it’s been a long time coming, but as you may have read we’re going through more than a bit from our side these days.

For us, the team is actually having a great time coming up with diabolical ways to engage you for the foreseeable millennium, or until 2012 when the Mayan calendar says everything will end – whichever comes first.

We’re preparing both the New UO client and the first completely playable level to internal testers next week. We are also planning how we want to run beta internally and externally, and as soon as we have a complete answer on it all, we'll inform you as well.

Ultima Online - Stygian Abyss... Sometime

by Woges, 22:48

Calvin Crowner mentions SA news to come shortly.

What about KR? What about SA?

As far as Kingdom Reborn is concerned – We have a couple of fixes going in this publish: walking as a ghost across the bridge in the Wind dungeon, and a legacy toggle issue with pink tiles around cave entrances. I’m not a fan of the color pink, sorry about the delay on this. There are a few others, but know we’re still working on more goodies. Also, we’re still investigating most of the topics discussed here on the boards. To this end, in the near future we’d like to do some server load/stress testing. We’re discussing between 20-25 players chasing a few devs and GMs around. Please be prepared to share frame rates, machine and OS specs.

Also know all new content will be updated for both Kingdom Reborn and the Legacy clients for the Epic Event.

Sighs. So much for the light publish.

Begins to walk away...

"WHAT ABOUT Stygian Abyss?! ..." He pauses slightly, without turning, a mild chuckle pressing the corners of the room, “We announced the expansion over a year ago, and you should be hearing more news about it soon.” He continues a slow shuffle into a dark room, most likely to be eaten by a grue.

Door closes ... footsteps fade. Following you open the door to discover a beach at sunset. There is a blue page here.

UO - Memories @ RPG Vault

by Inauro, 22:53

A selection of MMO alumni recall their fondest memories of Ultima Online to celebrate the game's 10th anniversary.

Jeff "Witch Doctor" Wilson
Current company:
Funcom
Current project: Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures
Current position: All-around coder, mostly server development
UO background: Programmer, Director of the library and tools group. I worked at Origin from Jan 1991 to June 1997 - I believe it was 1997. I was involved in the early development of all projects. For UO specifically, this was for about six months.

The main thing I remember is that Richard Garriott brought in some people who where from MOO/MUD community, and they became the core of the UO team. This, I believe, is on of the main reasons Ultima Online worked. Online games are about community, and they where the only people at that time with any real experience in building such communities. This is what Richard always excelled at, building the correct team for what he wanted to achieve.

UO - Community Q&A @ Official Site

by Inauro, 22:59

A community Q&A has been added to the official Ultima Online site.

"Why is Sudiva (the dragon from the Candle of Love event) still around?"
She's grown quite fond of her lair, and no one has been able to persuade her to leave. Besides, she's taken an interest in the lives of the crunchy little beings who sometimes visit her - you may see her get involved in future adventures.

"The Helm from the Virtue Armor set is showing negative resists - what do I do?"
There was an issue with the set bonus where it was getting removed incorrectly - and excessively - if the set was broken. We patched out a fix, but the only way for the fix to be applied to the armor is if it is either locked down in your house or in your bank box during a server reset. So take your helmet off next time you log out for the evening and stick it in your bank box - that should fix it.

UO - Kingdom Reborn Preview @ Worthplaying

by Dhruin, 20:18

Worthplaying serves up a preview of the Ultima Online overhaul, Kingdom Reborn:

Ultima Online was an excellent title in graphics, interface, and sound when it was released, but compared to more modern MMORPG titles, it obviously looks quite dated. Graphics don't necessarily make a game, but needless to say, there have been plenty of advancements in the form of interface design and how information is presented to a player. In an effort to both breathe a bit more modernity into the title and to appease player requests over the years, Kingdom Reborn will be the most significant investment for UO since its launch. It will scrap the old engine and replace it with a very stripped-down version of the same engine used in EA Mythic's upcoming Warhammer Online.

UO - Kingdom Reborn Interview @ FiringSquad

by Dhruin, 11:48

EA's Aaron Cohen again pops up, this time in an interview at FiringSquad:

FiringSquad: How did the idea for Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn come about?

Aaron Cohen: About a year and a half ago, we began talking about the future of UO, why it had stood the test of time and what possibilities for the future might be. The more we looked at the game and the community, the more potential we saw. Years and years of development had created one of the deepest MMORPGs ever.

We had great content and a great game, but productions values had grown old. Could we re-draw the graphics? Could we re-build the UI? Could we make new players feel welcome while at the same time enrich the experience of our elder players?

We began with a small team of four exploring prototypes, re-drawing art and playing with UI functionality. It began to take shape. Pretty soon, we had momentum, went in to full pre-production with a team of about 20, then full production with a team of about 40, and now we’re getting tantalizing close to finishing.Along the way, we teamed up with EA Mythic, who provided lots of technology and expertise, which sped things along quite nicely. And here we are!

UO - Kingdom Reborn/Stygian Abyss Preview @ Games Radar

by Dhruin, 11:42

Games Radar has one of their short pictorial previews for Ultima Online: Reborn Kingdom and the Stygian Abyss expansion with comments from Aaron Cohen:

The game's clunkiest element since inception, its user interface, is also getting some much-needed streamlining (in short: less double-clicking), along with more elegant inventory organization (slots rather than an unorganized mess in your bag) and an improved skill training system. "We're adding a risk-reward element," says Cohen. "Take lumberjacking: You could go to places where you can train up ten times faster because the trees are better, but the place is correspondingly more dangerous and you might have to defend yourself."

UO - Kingdom Reborn Preview @ GameSpy

by Dhruin, 23:52

GameSpy has a preview of UO: Kingdom Reborn with input from producer Aaron Cohen:

"(Kingdom Reborn) marks EA's largest investment in UO in the last five years," said Aaron Cohen, the game's producer at a recent EA/Mythic event touting the game. Kingdom Reborn consists of a re-done game engine, a new user interface that takes many of its cues from the current generation of MMOs, a brand-new new player experience and a tile-for-tile makeover of the entire Ultima Online world. When asked about EA's decision to invest so heavily in an admittedly 10-year old property, Cohen was rhapsodic in his praise for both the game and the community. "UO is still a vital, exciting game with an incredibly dedicated fan base. The problem was that while the players did a great job selling the game to friends, the game itself didn't. It just looked old."

UO - Media Event Report @ MMORPG.com

by Inauro, 21:17

MMORPG.com's Jon Wood reports back from the recent EA Mythic Media Event on the new life being breathed into Ultima Online.

Recently (and even not-so-recently), people have been speculating that the old MMO giant would soon pass quietly into the gentle night, joining so many games that have come and gone within its lifetime. Last week, we learned that not only was there life left in her, but that the entire game would be getting a whole new lease on life.

UO - Kingdom Reborn Preview @ UO Stratics

by Inauro, 21:07

UO Stratics reports back from the recent EA Mythic Media Event in Fairfax, Virginia, about the state of Ultima Online and what's in store for players with the upcoming release of Kingdom Reborn.

Ultima Online is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and lots of changes are about to occur within the world! The EA Mythic press event was held in January for members of the web , online, tv, and magazine media, and we were presented with the newest of information from the Ultima Online team.

Producer Aaron Cohen and Lead Designer Nick "DragonHead" Corea were there to show off the largest investment EA has made to the game since their acquisition, the newest expansion: Kingdom Reborn. Kingdom Reborn is due out sometime spring of '07. As DragonHead showed off the current Legacy client being used on UO servers, Aaron showed the exact same areas with KR. The new client will be distributed free of charge to subscribers and includes a complete artistry redesign of all areas, and effects. Kingdom Reborn also includes upgrades to the inventory system including a "loot all" button. Also, auto-stacking and one click inventory usage will be available.

Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn @ Official Site

An announcement at the official Ultima Online site heralds a new stage of development for this venerable MMORPG.
Congratulations!

You are one of the very first to get a glimpse of a reborn Ultima Online. We won't be releasing more details for a bit, but we do want to let you know a few things:

1. We are completely re-building the Ultima Online client with new graphics and a new easier-to-use interface.
2. It is an in-place upgrade. That means you will be able to keep your characters, items, houses and everything else you've earned over the past nine years.
3. We are committed to maintaining extremely low system specs. They will be higher than what UO launched with in 1997, but will still be far lower than almost any other MMORPG on the market.
4. The launch will happen in 2007.
5. There are many, many more surprises in store.

The Ultima Online development team has been working hard for the past eight months to make real the vision of a thriving, vibrant Ultima Online. We are proud to finally let you in on our secret. Look for a full announcement soon.

I know you probably have lots of questions. Before this year ends, we will answer just about all of them, so keep watching www.uo.com.

Ultima Online: Account Terminations @ Official Site

by Inauro, 05:07
The official Ultima Online site has word that a recent enforcement of the game's Rules of Conduct has resulted in the termination of 180 accounts and the removal of over 15 Trillion (15,000,000,000,000) gold pieces. Dang, that's a lot of zeros!
Recently, we discovered a large number of checks for amounts over one million gold pieces. Checks were never intended to exist in denominations of more than a million. Unfortunately, these inflated checks have been used by exploiters to store extremely large amounts of gold. These checks have now been removed from the game.

This action has resulted in over 180 accounts being terminated and approximately 15 Trillion (15,000,000,000,000) gold pieces have been permanently removed from the game.

Ultima Online: UO & Mythic Team Up @ Official Site

by Inauro, 02:18
With the acquisition of Mythic by Electronic Arts it seems the Ultima Online team will have some new workmates.
These are exciting days for MMORPG fans here at EA. With the acquisition of Mythic, the UO team will be working with the creative folks who brought us Dark Age of Camelot and are hard at work on the spectacular-looking Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Ia "!m thrilled that the UO team and Mythic will work together to forge Britanniaa "!s future.

There is much to talk about with our new partners, and it will take some time to review and finalize our plans. Because we need to take that time, we are postponing the announcement that we were going to make this week. The in-game fiction cycle will take a break for a bit and will return soon.

See you in Britannia,
Darkscribe
This just in (well, not really, but it sounds good):
Hi folks,

Please dona "!t read too much into todaya "!s announcement. We have new partners to work with and we are excited to be trading ideas with a group of guys who have been in the MMORPG a good long while. The end result will be extremely good for UO.

Please try and be patient. I know it can be frustrating when plans changes unexpectedly and the unknown begins to lurk. If you wait just a bit longer, I think youa "!ll find that everything that has been happening behind the scenes here at EA will be extremely good news.

Thanks,
Darkscribe
