Unavowed - Interview P1 & P2

by Silver, 04:51

Unavowed released recently to good reviews. Check out part 1 and part 2 of this mega interview from AppUnwrapper.

AppUnwrapper: Hi Dave. Thanks so much for doing this interview. I had such a great time playing Unavowed and am excited to pick your brain about it. So, the first obvious question — what was your inspiration for Unavowed? I saw your doodles of the scene on the roof. Is that where it all began?

Dave Gilbert: I’m a big fan of Dresden Files and things like Hellblazer and well, the darkness in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I love urban fantasy when done well. But I also was very inspired by an interview a former Bioware writer gave, a woman named Jennifer Hepler, who talked about how in action oriented games, they let you skip the cutscenes to get back to the fighting. But in the game she writes, like the Bioware games, she finds the action elements to be annoying. She’s not good at them. For her, the core of the game is the narrative stuff. She wants to skip the action to get back to the narrative stuff and she got a lot of undeserved flack for that. But I thought that was a great idea. That sounded like a really good point-and click-adventure game because it has all this stuff I love about the Bioware games, which is the party stuff, like putting together a party and having them react to the things in the world depending on who you have with you. And there’s always that sense of how would this have changed if I brought somebody else? I always wondered that, you know? That’s my favorite thing about the game.

Unavowed - Review Roundup

by Silver, 23:57

Unavowed has been well received by a number of outlets.

Entertainium

I grew to accept whatever happened. And that’s one of Unavowed’s biggest strengths, built upon a strong script and gameplay flow that allows for plenty of breathing room. I really felt comfortable with the ending that I got, and learned about the possible benefits that can come by playing the game a certain way (or not). And although I made up my mind not to go back on any of my decisions, I’m pretty curious to see what can come out of a fresh playthrough of the game, now that I have a certain amount of knowledge of what could possibly happen.

Cliqist

Unavowed has been compared to a Bioware game without combat, and that’s a fair comparison. Like in Mass Effect you will find yourself talking to your companions after each mission in order to find out about their lives and whatnot. And there’s also the fact that some of the missions have to do with them directly. And taking different companions to any mission will change how we get to the end of it. For example, in the beginning of the game we will see a ghost, but we’ll be unable to communicate with them for the time being.

Techraptor

The writing is at its best when it deals with the personal life of your companions and the NPCs you meet along the way. While the plot itself has some interesting moments, the motivation of a particular central character didn’t feel very developed. There’s an element of surprise that works fairly well, but the exposition at that point wasn’t very convincing. It’s not that the writing is bad; it’s that it lacks subtlety, especially when it comes to moral dilemmas. Gray morality feels more like a gimmick than a proper reflection of reality.

Videogames Uncovered

Overall, Unavowed is one of the best point and click adventure games to be released in the current generation. The high-resolution graphics, along with the strongly written dialogue, excellent puzzle design and emotive soundtrack provide the ingredients for a modern classic that will be very difficult to duplicate. If you have always wanted to be like the Winchester brothers or the Scooby gang in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Unavowed is the closest experience that you will get in the world of video games.

Unavowed - Preview @ Shacknews

by Hiddenx, 08:07

Shacknews has checked out the Adventure/RPG mix Unavowed:

AX West 2016 Unavowed Preview: The Demon Within

[...]

Although I only dug through a fifteen minute demo of Unavowed, I was impressed with the way it hides its hand; never revealing too much too quickly and thrusting the player into the world with little more than occasional cues to help guide them toward newer story beats. It was unsettling, jarring, and nothing if not effective.

Set in a modern-day world, Unavowed is a world made up of magical realism, wherein people hide in the shadows, fighting unseen demonic threats with their own use of magic and brawn. The start of the demo sees your character--either a man or a woman--on a rainy rooftop at night, being held back by a sword-wielding woman while a man looking like John Constantine asks you to remember key information about yourself while accusing an unseen demon of possession of your form.

[...]

The urban fantasy premise works nicely, and the grim edge makes Unavowed feel uniquely inspired, borrowing ideas from Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to create a compelling and engrossing story about conquering demons and cleansing out the flaws in our souls.
