Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Roadmap

by Hiddenx, 06:28

Couchpotato spotted the roadmap for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty:

Director’s Letter Vol.1

Hello to everyone playing Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty! This is the producer/director, Hirayama, and I wanted to take timeout to not only thank all of the players for their continued support, but to provide a road map of what everyone can expect from the game in the near future.

Road map
In our road map for the game, our plan is to try and provide you with something to improve the experience every month!

With regards to the direction of year-round balance adjustments and feature expansion, we will focus on the following 2 points:
- Expanding the scope of strategy with a focus on action and RPG
- Improving the ease of playability

Boss Rush Mission Part 2
We know you’re looking for more challenges, so we’re bringing you the second multiple boss mission! This feature was first added in the Ver1.08 patch in May, providing higher difficulty missions focusing on bosses that did not appear in the first mission. I hope you will take on this challenge, taking full advantage of the skills you have been honing on a daily basis.

And similar to the “Crouching Dragons’ Battle Royale”, this is a mission that can be played online, so you’ll be able to enjoy it through co-op play while aiming to clear the mission and earn rewards.

New end-game content
In DLC Vol. 2 (coming in September), new end-game content separate from additional difficulty levels will be added. Further details will be released in the coming weeks, but we are planning end-game content that aims to be played repeatedly based on different ‘strategy’, which is one of the themes of Wo Long.
In addition, we are planning further expansion through this end-game content so that DLC Vol. 3 can be played at a deeper level, so please look forward to it.

Major balance adjustments & feature expansion
When DLC Vol. 2 is released, we are also planning a major balance adjustment and feature expansion. As touched upon in the first section, “expanding the scope of strategy with a focus on action and RPG” and “improving the ease of playability” will be the main direction we will take as we make adjustments and/or additions to various features.

For example, in terms of action, this includes the strengthening the uniqueness of each existing weapon type, expanding Martial Arts and Spirit, raising each of the infrequently used action types, and adjusting the timing of cancelling actions. In terms of RPG, this takes into account adjusting the base of infrequently used Special Effects and reviewing how status is reflected. In regards to UI, we are addressing UI controls and flows that are not easy to use. These are just some of the things that we are planning in the coming months.

In advance of DLC Vol. 2, we are also planning for an update to make adjustments related to drops, as well as additional features. It will take some time before these are released, so please be on the lookout for upcoming information.

Collaboration
Collaborations are planned in September with Lies of P, and in November with Nioh. The content we are considering will be different than what we have released for the NARAKA: BLADEPOINT collaboration. We are working hard on these partnership contents in order for fans of these games to be delighted with the outcome. I hope you will all look forward to some exciting things to come!

Optimization and bug fixes for the PC version
We can’t talk about the future without talking about the past and present difficulties with the game. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to everyone playing the PC version of Wo Long since its release. I can assure you that the development team has read each and every report posted on various bulletin boards, social channels, our customer support department, and we have placed top priority on optimization and bug fixes. However, there are many combinations of PC environments in each household, and while our team continues to expand the environments where the game is checked post-launch, it will take time to replicate issues and properly fix them. I promise that we will continue to make improvements so that you can play with peace of mind as soon as possible. We apologize for this delay.

From the bottom of our hearts, we truly appreciate everyone who takes time to not only play our game, but to send us comments, streams, and screenshots in hopes of helping us continue to make the experience better for all gamers. In order to fulfill your expectations, our development team is committed in the efforts to make the game even more enjoyable for you. With that in mind, I hope we can count on your continued support for Wo Long; Fallen Dynasty.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Review

by Hiddenx, 14:59

Glitched has reviewed the action RPG Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty:

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Review

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty isn’t remotely anything new in the gaming world. The makers of Nioh have simply taken what they are so good at already – fast-paced action-RPG games, and adopted them into a new setting. Unlike Nioh, which takes place in Fuedel Japan, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty centres around the Three Kingdoms of Chinese history. If you have played Dynasty Warriors, this setting will be familiar to you as it is based on the same era.

Of course, this is a Team Ninja game so there was bound to be some magic and sorcery involved in this setting and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty doesn’t shy away from that at all. The action RPG genre mixed with this demonic and if anything, spiritual world, makes Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty a true gem to play. If anything, the magic aspect gives the game the much-needed fantasy direction so it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

[...]

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is good fun. It isn’t as remarkable as Elden Ring and might not last as long as you would want it to but the game’s action is exciting. Every new mission encouraged me to search high and low for new items. Every boss fight had me on the edge of my seat dodging, deflecting and pulling off crazy moves. It is what you expect from a game Team Ninja game and I don’t think you should overlook this one.

Summary
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a familiar experience but the new systems at work add to the already-exceptional master-crafted combat Team Ninja is known for.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Review @ PCMag

by Hiddenx, 18:22

PCMag reviewed Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty:

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Martial arts fantasy in the Three Kingdoms

If you need a little wuxia in your life, let Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty ($59.99) guide you through an action-packed, fantasy-fueled journey across ancient China. Developer Team Ninja has cooked up another action-RPG in the same vein as the crew's Sengoku-inspired Nioh games, but one that's set in China’s Three Kingdoms era instead of 17th-century Japan. Wo Long has a focus on parries and counters, a stamina system that encourages aggressive play, and a new jumping mechanic that spices up mobility. That said, this PC game isn't a complete success, suffering from drab stages and an incoherent narrative. Still, in terms of pure gameplay, Wo Long improves on the Nioh formula in many areas.

[...]

Should You Buy Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty?
Wo Long makes excellent improvements to the Nioh formula. Aerial mobility, enhanced stealth attacks, and satisfying defensive options elevate the combat, while the Battle Set system is brilliant and streamlines the character-building process. However, the game starts to feel a bit repetitive by the halfway point, and the story isn’t nearly as interesting as the Nioh games despite the fascinating Three Kingdoms setting. But provided you don't mind these shortcomings and you love action, Wo Long won't steer you wrong.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Review @ Gamers Grade

by Hiddenx, 07:38

Gamers Grade checked out the action RPG Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty:

‘Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’ Review: New Setting, Old Ideas

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, an action roleplaying game (RPG) from Team Ninja, will feel familiar to fans of the developer’s earlier action beats, but also to their Nioh franchise. The RPG is set in the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, but has a focus on hoovering up loot, punishing Soulslike mechanics, and linear mission-based progression. Don’t expect Dynasty Warrior level cheeriness though, Wo Long has a heavily fictionalised dark fantasy take on historical events.

Wo Long glows brightest with its combat, which nabs inspiration from the likes of FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, sprinkling some of its own frenetic flavouring on top with the ingenious Spirit Gauge system. It’s an elegant mechanic that ties every core combat activity into2 a singular, easily understandable system. Being too liberal with blocks, dodges, strong attacks, special martial arts moves, and magical spells will quickly deplete the Spirit Gauge, leaving the player character slumped over and wide open for a meaty smackdown. The way to avert this is by using precise deflections, which, in combination with your various offensive options, refills the protagonist’s Spirit Gauge while in turn lowering that of your enemies, opening them up for a critical blow.

[...]

The Verdict
Ferocious combat clashes with a debilitating sense of familiarity, as Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty struggles to find its own identity amongst Team Ninja’s previous action RPGs, as well as other Soulslikes.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Released

by Hiddenx, 09:42

The action RPG Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has been released - the first Steam reviews are often negative:

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

A new dark fantasy Three Kingdoms masocore game from Team NINJA, the developers of Nioh.

184 AD, Later Han Dynasty China. The land is overcome by chaos and destruction. The imperial dynasty that prospered for many years is now about to collapse.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dramatic, action-packed story of a nameless militia soldier fighting for survival in a dark fantasy version of the Later Han Dynasty where demons plague the Three Kingdoms. Players fight off deadly creatures and enemy soldiers using swordplay based on the Chinese martial arts, attempting to overcome the odds by awakening the true power from within.

Wo Long refers to a crouching dragon, and also refers to a hero or person of greatness who is not yet known. This is the story of officers, who will later become heroes, during their ‘unknown’ period, and also the story of a protagonist’s rise from being a ‘nobody’.

From the depths of darkness, a dragon soars.

1. Demons in the Kingdom
A dark fantasy set during the chaotic Three Kingdoms period, the narrative vividly tells the tale of a militia soldier’s strenuous fight for survival during a Later Han Dynasty infested with demons. It’s madness in the Three Kingdoms like never before!

2. Awaken the Power Within
Defeat deadly enemies to boost morale and awaken the power from within! Overcome adversity through unique new strategies, including battle styles based on the “Five Phases”.

3. Live by the Sword
Renowned for ruthless strikes that can change the tide of battle in an instant, sword practitioners of the Chinese martial arts gracefully change pace as they shift between offensive and defensive maneuvers. Overwhelm opponents with a flurry of force in a series of intense and bloody battles while learning the precision and skill necessary to become a true master of the sword.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Review

by Hiddenx, 17:05

MrMattyPlays reviewed Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty:

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Is The Sekiro I WANTED... | Review

Team Ninja has risen as the strongest competitor to From Software in the Souls genre. As From Software paves the way, Team Ninja has followed in their tracks and they do so here with Wo Long which borrows much from Sekiro. While I liked Sekiro, I found myself missing the RPG mechanics which Wo Long has in spades. Not that Sekiro is bad, but that I was looking for something else. Wo Long is my answer and even when it stumbles, I couldn't help but love it.
