World War II Online: Battleground Europe

World War II Online: Battleground Europe (Abbreviated: WWIIOL) is, as the title suggests, a massively multiplayer online game situated during WW2. Though it is not build around traditional MMORPG mechanics, it more focuses on Player versus Player territory combat divided between the two fronts of WW2, Allied and Axis. WWIIOL is commonly attributed as the first MMOFPS, though the rank system in the game adds an RPG dimension.

The combat in WWIIOL ranges from infantry, vehicle, naval to air combat. Combat features another layer with the High Command gameplay available to leaders, who are given command of what objectives (Most often villages, towns and cities) to attack and what objectives to defend.
WWIIOL online uses a ½ scale map of Western Europe with 30,000 km² of accurate terrain (800 m resolution satellite data). The key words of WWIIOL are simulation and realism.

It was first published in 2001 under the name of "Blitzkrieg" but has since been republished in Europe and North America late 2005/early 2006 under the name of "Battleground Europe". Cornered Rat Software plans to launch WWIIOL in China in 2008 with its own server for Chinese players.
