Yaga - Roots of Evil DLC Review @ GiN

by Hiddenx, 18:48

GiN reviewed the Yaga: Roots of Evil DLC:

A Big Yea for Yaga

Yaga (Roots of Evil DLC)

Fun fact, this is my first experience with reviewing a DLC (downloaded content) piece in addition to being my first experience with the Yaga Roots game altogether. On the one hand, you’d think doing a review of DLC would be easy, but really, I hate to say, but you’d be entirely incorrect.

Part of that’s because I’m not entirely certain what’s been covered, and part of that is trying to tailor this review appropriately because Yaga is bananas in all the best of ways.

[...]

TLDR

If you liked the Witcher and the world Geralt inhabits, you’ll find a lot to like in Yaga in the sense that the stories share both the same mythological underpinnings and a certain worldview. However, you’ll definitely have to weigh your love for worldbuilding against Yaga's extremely predictable gameplay. In an RPG that depends on combat for most of its appeal, that’s a real problem. However, if you’re in the right headspace, Yaga’s Evil Roots DLC makes up for that monotony with a fascinating look at a world most of the Western world never gets to see.

In terms of menus and controls, you’ll find Yaga to be nicely streamlined; there’s no real waste here, which appeals to me. However, the combat system relies very heavily on dodge, so if your twitch reflexes aren’t what they should be, you might find Yaga to be an exercise in frustration.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Yaga - Review @ Gosunoob

by Hiddenx, 18:34

Gosunoob checked out Yaga:

Yaga Review – Wonderfully Weird Folklore RPG

Eastern European fairy tales often combine beautiful fiction, immense brutality, and strong educational components, much like their complements from the west. They are largely unknown to the global audience – every child out there has heard about Hansel and Gretel, almost none knows about The Princess Who Never Smiled. If it were not for the Witcher series, this rich eastern, mostly Slavic mythology, would be completely invisible.

Yaga provides the opportunity to dive deeper into the imaginative folk tapestry from deep, dank forests of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, and others. Yaga, or „Baba Yaga”, isn’t just a John Wick’s nom de guerre – historically, she is a hag that lives in the forest hut that stands on chicken legs. Yaga is depicted as a morally ambivalent entity with unpredictable behavior and enigmatic motives. She might help the poor passer-by, or she may vex him and hex him, you never know with the ‘ol Yaga.

[...]

Yaga is an incredibly charming, unusual game. It is becoming apparent that the real innovation in the gaming sphere almost solely rests with indie developers. Yaga underlines the superb vibe we got from Hades in 2020. and sets the right tone for the year ahead.

Yaga - Review @ TSA

by Hiddenx, 19:02

TSA checked out the action RPG Yaga:

Yaga Review

Tough Luck

It’s safe to say that Ivan the Blacksmith is having a bad day. He’s just had his arm sliced off and eaten by a particularly cranky – and hungry – creature named the Likho, which would be bad enough if this skinny, black clad, one-eyed embodiment of pure evil also goes and curses Ivan with bad luck. Adding to Ivan’s woes is a particularly pernickety Tzar, who tasks the blacksmith with a series of impossible tasks, the reward for which is another impossible task, while the punishment for failure is a severe case of premature death. How’s Ivan to resolve these problems? By completing a series of quests in an action RPG of course!

[...]

Summary
There's a lot to like about Yaga; intriguing world building, superb characterisation, conversational tactics and a clear passion for Slavic mythology all tick my 'Yes' boxes. But the uninspired combat, slow movement, ineffective forging and annoying bad luck mechanic. It's an unsatisfying folktale then, the kind where the storyteller insists on coughing and saying 'erm' a lot, when all you want them to do it get on with it and get to the good bit.
