Zpocalypse: Survival - Character Creation Video

by Couchpotato, 06:25

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games released a new character creation video for Zpocalypse: Survival in the games latest kickstarter update.

Character Creation Video

I spent some time yesterday putting together a somewhat brief video on character creation. This includes where things are, in this very early Alpha state, and where we are going. Hopefully this will give you a much better idea of the flexability of the character creation system and the amount of replayability that you will have access to as you play through the game at different points. (Not to mention all the fun we can have with setting up achievements :D )

So jump in and take a look. The video runs a little longer than I would have liked, but I figure you all want to get more details than less. After you have taken a look let us know your thoughts! I am going to be working on the base today and then start on some new content for following update! It is our goal throughout development to do little Dev Vlogs like this to keep people updated on what is going on with the project.

Zpocalypse: Survival - The Base Update

by Couchpotato, 05:17

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games latest update for Zpocalypse: Survival has information on your how your base will function in the game. It reminds me of  Dead State.

The Base

Probably one of the biggest aspects of the game will be the base. Heading out to explore, scavenge and fight will play an important role, but without a base you are going to have an extremely hard time surviving for any length of time. (Although we are looking forward to seeing people do timed runs of their survival experiences without a base!) So with that in mind, let’s delve a little deeper into where the base started, where it is now, and where we plan to take it after the Kickstarter.

In the beginning… well the base was a static thing. We initially built out the base, in our pre-alpha demo to hold specific, pre-selected locations where you could build a couple different base items. This helped to demonstrate the idea of the base, but this was by no means where we wanted to end with the base. Over the last 6 months we have been working hard to get the base closer in line with our vision. The first step was making the base more dynamic. Want to start a base out in the middle of the woods? You can do that. Want to build your base in the pre-existing shell of what used to be a home, school, office, resturant, … the list goes on? You can do that too. Want to try and build a base that walls off the whole town? You can TRY to do that also.

Zpocalypse: Survival - 50% Funded

by Couchpotato, 04:33

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games latest update for Zpocalypse: Survival has information the game is already half funded, and talks about character creation.

50% Funded

Thank you all for the amazing support so far! We are 50% funded with another 29 days to go so things are looking really good. We are going to ping all the press once again now that we are halfway there and hope we get some additional coverage. Just one or two major news sites talking about us could make a huge difference.

Character Creation

On the main KS page we briefly mentioned the character creation system but since this is the first place you will really touch the game we thought we would go into some more details.

Initially in the pre-alpha we had a three class structure that really defined your character and that was all there was to it. When we moved to full Alpha we built and continue to build a more robust character creation system. We have made it much more robust and a lot closer to an RPG feel of creating your character without going too deep into the process. The goal is to make it meaningful while keep it simple. So with that said below is the alpha character creation screen. Note that the UI is going to be getting a massive overhaul once we are closer to Beta but this at least gives you an idea of where we are going.

Zpocalypse: Survival - Kickstarter Relaunched

by Couchpotato, 03:57

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games has relaunched his kickstarter to fund development of Zpocalypse: Survival. Here is the new video, and description in-case you all forgot.

Zpocalypse: Survival is a game about exploration and survival in a gritty post-nuclear zombie apocalypse setting. Your job is to help a group of survivors attempt to eke out an existence and build a place for themselves in a brutal world. You will need to scavenge for supplies and food, find and fortify a shelter, recruit other survivors to your cause, defend your people, and attempt to grow and expand, facing challenges every step of the way.

Zpocalypse: Survival - August Update

by Couchpotato, 05:28

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games has posted a new update for the failed kickstarter Zpocalypse: Survival about the next relaunch of the game.

August Update

Hello once again from the depths of development land! You know there is that saying “No news is good news” and that is the case here! We are steadily moving along getting the game to an early alpha state that we feel will make for something that we can really push out to the press and get some more buzz for the re-launch of the Kickstarter. Tentatively we are looking at October for the re-launch.

Before we delve into the updates I wanted to tell you all about an exciting opportunity! We are looking for a handful of dedicated early alpha testers to help provide feedback on the current state of the game before we go back up on Kickstarter in a couple months. The objective is to get some fresh eyes on the project before we start putting it out for further marketing in preparation for the Kickstarter. If you are really excited about this project, have the time and patience to test and report bugs and want to help make it a great success then please stop by our forums and tell us a little more about yourself.

So with that let’s delve into what has been going on over the last month. First off we have added a new perks and effects system. During our pre-alpha we had 3 different classes but for the alpha we are only focusing on one class, the fighter. The fighter class now has its skill tree built out for the first five levels allowing you to get a taste for the simple leveling mechanics that allow for some variability between your survivors. The great thing with this new system is that it was built not just for talent trees but also for item effects as well. Also, as with everything else we are doing, this was designed with moding in mind and gives a lot of freedom to the content designer. Once we get the tools and interfaces in place this will be another great way for the community to enhance and expand the game post release. Currently about a fourth of the functionality for the planned effect types is in place but it already gives us a huge range of flexibility with what kind of unit and item effects we can add to the game.

Zpocalypse: Survival - Game Updates

by Couchpotato, 14:28

It has been a while since I posted news about the failed kickstarter game Zpocalypse: Survival. The developer Greenbrier Games has posted a few more updates.

The first update talks about the re-launch on Kickstarter.

Ever closer to Alpha and re-launch!

It has been a little while since out last update and in our silence you will find us hard at work on the game getting it ever closer to an alpha state. I have some nice new screenshots to show off in this update around some of the things that we have been working on. I did however, want to mention that while things are still progressing nicely we lost our level designer. We have been working hard to get our new level designer up to speed and our programmer has been hard at work getting the random world generation and free-form base building working. The world randomization is already shaping up really well and the only slowdown is getting all the models and art to start populating the world fully. As a side note, if there are any talented environmental 3d modelers with texturing skills out there we are looking for some extra assistance.

The second update is about the progress of the Alpha version.

Quick Update

Just wanted to give a quick update as we continue to move forward! I just got in a new screenshot from our level designer as he is working through things. This is a first look at the a new world build. Still a lot we are working on but it is great to see things getting back to normal. Keep in mind this is all with our world generation and is not the static world we had before!

Zpocalypse: Survival - Kickstarter Cancelled

by Couchpotato, 09:29

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games announces on the kickstarter page for Zpocalypse: Survival that he has cancelled funding, and will relaunch the kickstarter again.

Cancel & Re-launch

We want to thank you all so much for your wonderful support and your belief in what we are trying to accomplish with this game. While things are slowly progressing towards our goal, we have had amazing support from all of you. It is gratifying and humbling to hear all of your feedback, suggestions and wishes for this game and we are so grateful to have an awesome group of backers willing to give us their time and collective hours of gaming experience. Despite both ours and your heroic efforts, we are concerned that we won’t make our goal and so after much internal deliberation and hearing the input from many of you we have decided that the best course of action is to cancel this current campaign re-work our goals, the initial features, our rewards structure and the general layout of the campaign. We will then re-launch the campaign around the end of June or beginning of July and come back even stronger!

Of course, this is a hard decision because it is a possibility that we hit our initial funding goal in the last hours of the campaign. However, with problems we have identified and the great amount of feedback and requests from you we feel that it would be a disservice not to re-work this to make it even better and provide all of our wonderful backers with more of what you are looking for. As such, the plan is to continue working on the game and once we get it much closer to a true alpha state and less of the pre-alpha state it is in currently we can re-launch the campaign.

We sincerely hope that in that interim all of you, our earliest supporters, will consider joining us on our forums and continue to provide your feedback on our progress and help us make the re-launch Kickstarter as great as it can be. I, Shawn, will personally make sure that those who stick with us through this process and choose to show their ongoing support on the re-launch will be rewarded for their continued help. I don’t know what that will be now, but that is even something we can discuss in depth as a community while we move forward. Our goal is to bring a lot of the big decisions for the re-launch to all of our backers and collect your input so we can make the best decisions together.

We are making this game not only because we want to see a great post-nuclear, squad based, rogue-lite game with lots of zombie mayhem but because we also believe we can make something great for our community, our supporters, and anyone else who plays the game. Our Team Lead, Shawn, will continue to monitor the Kickstarter for comments, the forums, and Steam while the rest of the digital team remains hard at work continuing to develop the project and get it further along. This way we can show you more of what we want to achieve in the final product. Additionally, we will be diligently working to get more press for the game and continue to build a community with our awesome supporters who we are so thankful to have.

With all of that said, please head over to our forums and register an account and join in on the discussions moving forward! Once you register send us a message here with your account name so we can give you the appropriate access and a special rank on the forums. We will do a lot of communication via the forums. However, we will also be sure to send out important news via Kickstarter so that everyone is aware of where things are headed!

Zpocalypse: Survival - New forums & Dev Diary

by Couchpotato, 05:25

Zpocalypse: Survival has 12 days to go, and has has only managed to get $22,029 of the $50,000 goal. The developers haven't given up yet, and have posted a new update.

The New Forums & Dev Diary - Base & Zombie Attacks

Thank you all for the feedback so far on the potential re-launch. We are still taking things into consideration so make sure you tell us your feelings on the matter here in the comments or via direct message on Kickstarter.

On Steam Greenlight are so close to 80% mark toward the top 100. The thing I find really great is that, unlike other games in the top 100 on Greenlight we have a very even split between Yes/No votes at almost 50/50. This apparently varies from others in the top 100 where it appears the split is usually closer to 40/60 Yes/No.

The Forums

We have the new forums set up and we plan to be active on the boards talking with you all. There are already a few topics where we would love to get your feedback! In the event that we do decide to cancel and re-launch that is going to be the main base, the hub, ground zero if you will for information where we will be asking for a lot of input and we hope you will all join in! You can login and create an account using the login with a social network section at the top of the page.

Until we figure out a better solution feel free to create an account and then send us a message here on Kickstarter with your username so that we can make sure we get you marked as a supporter, give you your special rank, and grant you access to the restricted early supporter forum.

Dev Diary - Base & Zombie Attacks

So with everything else in the works we haven’t posted a dev update in awhile. As such I wanted to get back to the base and talk about the base and zombie attacks.

Each night there is a chance that the undead will attack the player’s base. When this occurs the zombies will be trying to get to the base center and the player must stop them with their defenses and weapons. Any characters the player has who are not assigned tasks and who are not out defending the base are considered in the base center during a zombie base attack. Those characters will have a chance of being killed whenever a zombie reaches the base center.

Each time a zombie manages to reach the base center (which has an actual graphic in the base), the center’s storage capacity will be reduced by some amount (1-3 spaces, say). Empty spaces would be removed first, but eventually spaces with supplies or gear in them will be removed and those supplies and gear will also be lost.

If the base center ever has it’s storage capacity reduced to zero, the base is considered destroyed. If this is the last base owned by the player then the player has lost the game as his band of survivors scatters to the winds, lost in the wastelands with no hope for tomorrow.

Once a zombie attack is over and the center’s storage has not been reduced to zero, it will be possible for players to repair their base center and return their storage capacity to it’s original number. This will take time and materials, however, so it is always better for the player to defend his base center than let it be overrun.

Zpocalypse: Survival - General Updates

by Couchpotato, 06:48

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games has posted a new update for Zpocalypse: Survival that has news about general updates, and talks about procedural generation.

General updates, procedural generation, shout out

Before we delve into the rest of the news I wanted to give an update on the general state of things. First off we are SO close to hitting the 40% funded mark!. We are working hard on some big marketing pushes so we hope to see some uptick in the near future. We still need your help spreading the word though! Click on the share button here on the Kickstarter page to spread the word on facebook, jump on Twitter and tweet about us or re-tweet our posts, head over to Reddit and talk about our project or check out our existing posts, post on forums and tell everyone you know about us.

As far as Greenlight we saw a big uptick the last couple days, not exactly sure from what, but we are now 67% to the top 100 - about a 10% jump. If you haven’t had a chance go over there and give us a vote. Also get any of your friends on steam to give us a vote. The sooner we get Greenlit the better, this will be just one more piece of news we can put out to the press to get them talking about us!

I also have a question for all of our backers at the $10 level. What made you decide to go with the $10 level over the next step up of $35? The reason I ask is that this pledge level is one of the places we could see a big jump. If we had all of our $10 backers go up to the $35 level that would be over a 10% increase in funding getting us close to 50% funded. Maybe there is something that we can include in that level and above to make it more enticing? We want to hear from you so tell us what you think in the comments!

Zpocalypse: Survival - Converting Backers

by Couchpotato, 01:48

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games has posted a new update for Zpocalypse: Survival with a look at how they take the picture of backers , and turn them digital.

Converting backers to our digital world

So with the influx of new backers and some of the questions around the pledge levels involving getting yourself in the game I wanted to put together some details on the process. We actually already went through this to get our female survivor in the game working with one of our team members, Theresa. If you are considering backing to get into the game, already have backed at one of those levels or know someone who might want to be a digital character trying to survive in a post-nuclear zombie apocalpyse read on!

To start things off we get a set of at least 3 photos and a description for what you want the character to look like. For those that will get a full survivor we would also love additional details, if you are interested in providing them, including some background information, the characters story, and their personality. This way we can include some of those aspects into the game when other people come across your survivor.

Zpocalypse - New Dev Diary & Shout Out

by Couchpotato, 05:54

Greenbrier Games have posted a new update for Zpocalypse. They mention the amount of bakers, and include a new development diary about base mechanics.

Half way to 625 backers, Dev Diary - Base, & shout out.

We are still moving toward our goal and we are halfway to the first # backers stretch goal which we will hit at 625 backers. Speaking of the 625 Backer goal tell us what you would like to see in your bug-out-bag! Join in the comments and give us your thoughts. Maybe there is some gear we haven’t already thought of that we can add in!

Also, there are a few discussions going on on our Steam page; we are looking for your ideas on events, weapons you would like to see, and features you would like in the game. We would love your input there or here on the Kickstarter. As devs we really do love to hear from our backers, supporters, and even the naysayers. Involvement with the community is great and we love talking with all of you and exchanging ideas and information so be sure to jump in on the discussion and tell us what you are thinking!

Zpocalypse - Stretch Goals & Add-ons

by Couchpotato, 04:47

Greenbrier Games has posted the ninth update for Zpocalypse: Survival with news on the games stretch goals, add-ons, and talks about the pledge levels.

Stretch goal, add-ons, pledge level update & shout out

We have finalized some of our first mini-stretch goals which are exclusive early unlocks for our Kickstarter backers allowing you a much wider variety of options when creating your character and starting the game. These are backgrounds that you will choose when starting. In case you missed it in the previous update backgrounds are part of the character creation process. A background will provide a little story flavor and provide your character with benefits and potentially some downfalls. In most cases the backgrounds will also include starting gear that increase your chance of survival.

Once we hit our funding goal these will be at every 5k past our goal up to 100k which is our next BIG stretch goal that will enhance the game for all players. One thing you will note is at 75K we have a pet companion unlock. Pets will not take up a survivor slot but instead will be associated with one of your survivors. Pets will be useful for helping to find supplies, alerting you of threats early, providing an increase to morale, and in some cases helping you fight off the undead.

We are working on more of these to get us from our 100K goal to our next big goal of 150k. We are still looking for ideas on other mini-stretch goals so tell us your thoughts in the comments. We are listening!

Pledge updates, audio tracks, Dev Diary - Inventory & Equipment

Things are still going good, we are continuing to inch closer and closer to our goal. We have been hard at work reaching out to press and YouTubers to help spread the word about our game. We would like to ask that everyone here helps us in this endeavor. If you are a fan of a site or a subscriber to a YouTube channel that is relevant to our game, please let them know about us. The Kickstarter itself is going strong we simply need more exposure to get this to really take off.

Zpocalypse: Survival - Kickstarter Updates# 4-6

by Couchpotato, 05:22

Greenbrier Games has been busy in the last wo days an released three new kickstarter updates for Zpocalypse: Survival. The first update is about starting gear.

With yesterdays update about new mini-stretch goals that we are working on I thought I would explain a little more about our plans for the final game and our unlock system. This also relates to the benefits you get as a Kickstarter backer by having the option to start the game with certain items.

The second update has the promised gameplay video, and the next Dev Diary.

First off, I wanted to say THANK YOU again to all our wonderful backers! We are 20% of the way to our funding goal, over 40% to the top 100 on Greenlight and the whole team is really excited about getting this funded and starting to work on our stretch goals!

There have been a few updates to the main page. We have added a “In The Media” section for news, previews, first looks and the like that we find. If you come across anything we have missed let us know. Otherwise check out what others are saying and help spread the word! Additionally, we have added the graphic for the # of backers stretch goal which is directly under the funding goal and stretch goals.

Now to the important thing you have been waiting for. The gameplay video is ready! However, before you go straight to the link and start watching here are a couple of things to keep in mind about the video.

We have said it before but we want to make sure we set expectations. This is a pre-alpha demo. As such we are only working in a small static world, with static events and stories, and static building options. We are working on our randomization systems for the full game which will include the procedurally generated world, randomized stories and events that are driven by our event manager system to keep the game engaging, and the ability to build where you want once you have set up your base rather than only specific locations we have pre-set

I am intimately familiar with the demo so this is definitely a bit of a spoiler. As such if you want to experience the difficulty of the game for the first time without seeing how it can be done I would skip watching the video for no, otherwise enjoy!

And the last but most important update is about the games demo.

The new version of the demo is available!! We look forward to your input and feedback. Some notes about the demo below.

This is a Pre-Alpha Demo. As such every aspect of the game is still evolving. In future versions of the game please look forward to seeing:

  • Randomly generated world and events. Never play the same game twice
  • In depth story events to drive a more living (or unliving) world.
  • Unrestricted building and base advancement/crafting
  • Survivor management and task assignment
  • Character customization/advancement systems and replayable unlock systems
  • Loads of new and more complex items, buildings and enemies
  • More responsive and effective AIs
  • And lots more!

This is a proof of concept not a representation of a real playthrough of Zpocaylpse: Survival. Also, please feel free to share the demo with others and make videos of your gameplay!

Zpocalypse - Update#3, Demo & Gameplay

by Couchpotato, 05:14

Greenbrier Games has posted the third kickstarter update for Zpocalypse: Survival were they talk about the games demo, a gameplay video, and share new stretch goals.

Spreading the Word

We have been reaching out to game press and youtubers and hope to start seeing more news about our game all over the internet. We can use your help too! If you have suggestions for places for us to contact we are all ears. Additionally, if you are press or know someone in the press please get in touch with us. We are happy to talk your ear off about the game and there is plenty of information still to be released!

Another way you can help is to click on the Share button on the main page. The great thing is even if you have clicked to Share once you can keep doing it! Also, spread the news on other social media. We are on Twitter and Reddit and we will be happy to retweet and comment on things you post and mention us in.

As for Steam Greenlight we are doing great on! Continue spreading the world and helping to get us votes! We are already 40% of the way to the top 100!

Demo & Gameplay Video Coming!

We have been hard at work testing the new version of the demo. We’ve added in a few new pieces of functionality including a small quest log so you can keep track with your current objectives, the ability to add/remove survivors from your squad when you are in your base which is also the framework for assigning tasks to survivors who are in your base, and also cleaning up some of the small things people had mentioned when they tested the game at PAX.

We are really excited to get this out to everyone *hopefully* on Tuesday!

Additionally, I have put together a gameplay video and I am just putting some final touches on the voice over to get that out to everyone tomorrow so you can see the demo actually being played from someone who is overly familiar with playing it. :)

Zpocalypse - Update#2, Pledge Updates

by Couchpotato, 06:01

Greenbrier Games has posted the second kickstarter update for Zpocalypse: Survival with information about new Pledged Updates, and the next dev dairy about characters.

Pledge level updates, team bios & dev dairy - characters

To start things off we wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone for all the support so far. We can't wait to get this funded and start getting to more of our stretch goals! Also we hope everyone is having a great weekend. We are going to continue our dev diary as promised with information about characters but first a bit of other news.

Alpha Level Updates

First off, we have updated the two physical reward tiers to include Alpha access. We don't know what we were thinking when we put those levels in but of course we would think if you are wanting to get the physical game as soon as possible you probably are also going to want to start trying out the digital game as soon as possible. Due to Kickstarter rules we cannot change the level descriptions once individuals back them. However, we have updated the pledge level graphics at the bottom of the main page.

Additionally, due to popular demand we have added a new pledge level for those interested in only one copy of the game and one alpha access code in addition to what you would get at the Hoarder level. The $60 Prepper level is still a great value if you have a friend who might enjoy the game.

Dev Diary - Characters

One of our first requests for information was on character customization. So let’s delve into the character system a bit. When you start a new game of Zpocalypse: Survival one of the first things you will do is create your starting character for the game. You will begin by choosing your gender. From there you will be able to customize the character using various body types, heads and hair styles. We are also working on a system where you can customize the color for skin, hair and eyes in addition to adding things like facial hair, tattoos, and more.

After this you will select a role. Roles are the top-end descriptor of each character, giving a broad sense of what that character's, ahem, role will be in the game. Roles will define to a large degree what the character's strengths and skills are, though players will still be able to customize their character to make it their own.

Each role can be viewed as a bucket in which a handful of more traditional 'character classes' are held. Over time, as players develop each character, they more clearly define what the character's "class" actually is, in an RPG sense. This definition is done organically through skill and perk choices rather than actually choosing a “class” for the character. When first creating a character, players will be able to choose whichever role they prefer. Characters will fall into one of 3 roles: bruiser, fighter and smartie.

Zpocalypse - Update #1, Stretch Goals & Dev Diary

by Couchpotato, 01:58

Greenbrier Games has posted the first update for Zpocalypse: Survival with information on Steam Greenlight, stretch goals, and posts a new Dev Diary.

Great start, Greenlight, Stretch Goals & Dev Diary 1

Thank you all for your support so far! Just before I posted this update we hit 10% so we are off to a great start and we are just kicking up our marketing again after coming back from PAX East 2014! So hopefully we will start seeing some news about the game on various websites. From PAX it was great to see so many people checking out the game and giving good feedback. We hope that continues as the campaign progresses, we are happy you are backers but we would also love for you to be contributors.

Steam Greenlight

If you haven’t seen, we have put the game up on Steam Greenlight. If you have an opportunity go check it out and show your support. Plus spread the news about it. The great thing about Greenlight is that it gets us even more visibility with more gamers which helps get the Kickstarter more visibility. Please note that while we do plan to use Steam as a distribution option we are looking at other distribution methods that offer DRM free options for those who prefer to not use Steam.

Dev Diary

So one thing I want to do in some of our updates is give you some info about the game, its development and our goals. For the future, please let us know what subjects you might be interested in and we will get you the news! To start of, lets go to the beginning…

We've been hard at work on our first digital title Zpocalypse: Survival for the past 12 months. There have been slow times and fast times, particularly since September and we've already gone through a number of iterations of the game. Real development for the current state of the game has been going on for about the last 6 months. I've wanted to make a digital game based of the Zpocalypse franchise ever since I first joined up with the team back in August of 2012, not too long after GBG finished up their first Kickstarter for the original Zpocalypse game. I started off helping them put together a small app that could be used to play the boardgame, with some added enhancements of music. Once we launched that around March 2013 we started looking at our next steps. We started off thinking of just making another app, keep it really simple, 2D and basically a direct port of the boardgame. So we started our design doc and one of our earliest design concepts.

Zpocalypse - A Rogue-Lite Survival Game

by Couchpotato, 01:06

Have you ever wondered what a simplified Dead State game would look like? Well if you do Greenbrier Games has a new kickstarter called Zpocalypse: Survival.

The developer is asking for $50,000, and has thirty three days left to get funded. Here is the usual teaser trailer, and game description.

Starting from a procedurally generated world with dynamic events and encounters, Zpocalypse: Survival combines base management and good ol'fashioned combat with infinite building possibilities. It is designed to be moddable at every level, from your base, the survivors and enemies inhabiting the world, to the events and encounters you might come across. Our goal is to build tools and documentation. They will ship sometime after release (or sooner with your help) allowing you to add your own customizations to the game, and share them with friends

  • The game is part Sandbox, part Real Time Strategy, and part RPG.
  •  We will support PC initially, with plans to release on Mac & Linux. This will happen sooner rather than later with your support! We are looking at possibilities for tablets and consoles.
  • This Kickstarter is to fund the single player version of the game. We are extremely interested in multiplayer and this may appear as a future stretch goal.
