PAX West 2024: Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Hands-On Preview
Big Medieval Energy
I’m just going to point something out real quick. When I talk about RPGs that I’ve played, I generally mean the likes of Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Fire Emblem and the like. Games with sword and sorcery fantasy and over the top yet entertaining characters. What I generally don’t play are realistic or open world RPGs. Which brings us to Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. I demoed it this year at PAX West, and very quickly decided I probably wasn’t the target audience.
Developed by Warhorse Studios and set to be published by PLAION on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II frankly provides a shocking amount of in-depth realism and attention to detail. Everything from the traditions of the characters to the garb and even the language spoken is aiming to bring the player into a medieval European environment. And for the purposes of the demo, there was a lot of German machismo and warfare on display, though perhaps not in the way you’re expecting.
Now the starting point was supposed to involve my talking with a specific character, an arrogant and ornery swordsman looking to prove his worth to everyone else. Instead, I accidentally wandered all throughout the town, which was so huge I started to forget where I had came from. The developers actually had to help rein me in, and set me back on the right path. Then I talked with the swordsman, only to get into a bout of swordsmanship to test his claim. Short version, he wasn’t joking, and my butt was quickly handed to me after scoring one mere slice on his person. But that’s not the last time I had fun doing the wrong thing in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.
