Square Enix - Blockchain Technology in Games

by Redglyph, 12:39

Square Enix's president Yosuke Matsuda explains their interest in what he calls "blockchain games" and in particular, NFT, as a new incentive for their customers.

A New Year's Letter from the President

[...] Another term that gained quick currency in 2021 was “NFT” or “non-fungible token.” The advent of NFTs using blockchain technology significantly increased the liquidity of digital goods, enabling the trading of a variety of such goods at high prices and sparking conversations the world over. I see 2021 not only as “Metaverse: Year One,” but also as “NFTs: Year One” given that it was a year in which NFTs were met with a great deal of enthusiasm by a rapidly expanding user base. However, we do observe examples here and there of overheated trading in NFT-based digital goods with somewhat speculative overtones, regardless of the observed value of the content provided This, obviously, is not an ideal situation, but I expect to see an eventual right-sizing in digital goods deals as they become more commonplace among the general public, with the value of each available content corrected to their true estimated worth, and I look for them to become as familiar as dealings in physical goods.

To address these changes in our business environment, the medium-term business strategy that we unveiled in May 2020 identified AI, the cloud, and blockchain games as new domains on which we should focus our investments, and we have subsequently been aggressive in our R&D efforts and investments in those areas. [...]

However, with advances in token economies, users will be provided with explicit incentives, thereby resulting not only in greater consistency in their motivation, but also creating a tangible upside to their creative efforts. I believe that this will lead to more people devoting themselves to such efforts and to greater possibilities of games growing in exciting ways. From having fun to earning to contributing, a wide variety of motivations will inspire people to engage with games and connect with one another. It is blockchain-based tokens that will enable this. By designing viable token economies into our games, we will enable self-sustaining game growth. [...]

Square Enix - Discusses Mod Support

by Silver, 15:20

Gamingbolt reports that Square Enix is looking at adding more mod support because of Final Fantasy XV.

Speaking to GameSpot, Square Enix live services manager Shigefumi Tanaka explained why the publisher, unlike so many Japanese publishers that still have a sealed end product mentality regarding their games, is finally coming on board with supporting mods for PC versions of its games.

“We’re doing the mods […] to give some kind of connection with players around the world,” he said. “Even though it’s not a multiplayer experience, it still gives the feeling of you being involved in something bigger, and just that two-way approach in terms of providing more story content but also just providing things on a more day-to-day level for people to just enjoy and create their own customized experience is how we’re looking at the remainder on this XV timeline.

Left Alive - Mech Game in Development

by Silver, 23:15

@Forceclaw Left Alive is an AAA game in development by Square Enix featuring mechs and interesting decisions.

...

What's more, Matsuda also said that the game's content will be set in a way to target the core audience, and that is what will define their unique selling point.

"Content-wise, the game will be satisfying in a hardcore way, and that's how we want to market it to players."

While more details about the game are scarce, but the pedigree of the people working on the game hints that we can expect something exciting from Square Enix next year. Among the elite team includes Veteran developers, Toshifumi Nabeshima (director, Armored Core series), Yoji Shinkawa (character designer, METAL GEAR SOLID series), and Takayuki Yanase (mech designer, Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Xenoblade Chronicles X).

The game seems to be on the lines of Nier Automata where players get to experience the massive power gap between man and machine in pulse-pounding encounters: face off against powerfully armed troops, armored vehicles and towering mechs. The game will also allow to play as three different characters and players can enjoy multiple story paths using the decision system. Announced two months back in September, watch the teaser trailer and stay tuned for more updates.

Square Enix - Games as a Service

by Hiddenx, 09:03

OnlySP reports that Square Enix wants to provide future titles as an ongoing service:

Square Enix to Focus on “Games as a Service” Model for Future Titles

Square Enix has outlined plans to focus on ensuring long-term engagement from fans for future projects.

The new strategy was revealed as part of the publisher’s 2017 Annual Report. The relevant section lumps together the “Games as a Service” model and multiplayer as areas on which efforts will be focused. However, the report does not conflate the two concepts, instead mentioning both as design principles intended to “place a strong emphasis on longer-term user engagement.” As such, the company plans to “develop games designed not to be played once after launch but that customers can play more and enjoy longer.”

Square Enix - More Nier Coming

by Silver, 08:10

@PCGamesN More Nier Automata games now seem likely going by a recruitment page for Nier specific things from Square Enix.

Nier: Automata was wonderfully weird and weirdly successful for a game about sad robots coming to terms with their own existence in a nihilistic world. It did have a good butt, though, so maybe its success isn’t that surprising.

Now it seems that Square Enix are hiring for more Nier. A NeoGAF user has dug up a recruitment page on their Japanese site with messages from series director Yoko Taro and series producer Yosuke Saito. The Business Division 6 Square Enix are hiring for regularly works with external developers on collaborative projects, such as Automata’s development with Platinum Games, and it seems the new listings are Nier-specific scenario staff.

Square Enix - Considering Star Ocean 5 port

by Silver, 06:30

@Gemetsu report on a FFDream interview where Square Enix declared it is considering a Star Ocean 5 port for pc but is trying to work out the controls first.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness could come to PC following its PlayStation 4 release next week, according to producer Shuichi Kobayashi.

FFDream interviewed Kobayashi last month, who discussed the potential of a PC version. Here is the

FFDream: Are there any plans to port Star Ocean 5 to PC?

Kobayashi: "Since the game is full of action, I wonder the ideal commands for PC might be... What's the best way to play it, in your opinion?"

FFWorld: "With a game pad?"

Kobayashi: "Are people used to playing on PC with a game pad in Europe?"

FFWorld and FFDream: "Yes."

Kobayashi: "I see. So if you have a game pad, you can play it without problems, but I wonder how those who don't have one would play. That's our main concern and why we've pushed to release a PC version later on, so that we could reflect on the controls for players without a game pad. The ASKA engine, which tri-Ace used to develop Star Ocean 5, allows us to easily bring the game to PC, so if we can find a solution to our problem with the controls on PC, porting it should be easy enough for us, although I can't promise that it would be fast."

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is due out for PlayStation 4 in North America next Tuesday, June 28, and in Europe next Friday, July 1.

Square Enix - Eidos IPs For Crowd-funding

by Couchpotato, 04:16

Square Enix announced they are accepting pitches from Indie developers interested in making news games of some old Square IPs, and Anachronox is one of them.

It’s been almost a year since we fully launched Collective, and one of the headline announcements back then was the prospect of allowing developers to create games based in some of the old Eidos IPs. But it wasn’t something I wanted to open up right away, in case it overshadowed the original games that developers submitted to the platform.

Well, now the platform is established and we’ve more experience in supporting projects (both in Feedback and through crowdfunding) so it feels like the right time to live up to that early promise – which means that from now on, we’re going to allow developers to pitch game ideas based on the following IPs:

  • Gex
  • Fear Effect
  • Anachronox

We have more IPs that we may open up in future, but we’ll start with those and see what the response is like.

If this is the only way to get another Anachronox game then so be it.

Square Enix - A New Final Fantasy PC Game

by Couchpotato, 05:38

I found a short article on destructoid that has information Square Enix posting job hints for a Final Fantasy XV PC project. Seems the last two JRPG ports sold well.

I'm really excited for Final Fantasy XV.

The Kingdom Hearts influences, the beautiful engine, the idea of a bro-road trip with dinosaurs. I'm in. Square Enix might be planning a "XIII"-like mini-franchise too, as it turns out that they've posted a job listing for a "FFXV-related online game."

The requirements for the job apparently relate to PC games and "games with fees." Don't all foam at the mouth at once! But seriously, I hope that XV is a great standalone game, and everything else that comes along with it can be addressed separately.

The only drawback are the words online, and fees.

Square Enix - Final Fantasy & Realistic Hair

by Couchpotato, 05:23

Well since it's Sunday here is an interesting article to waste your time reading  on the Huffington Post. The article talks about the Final Fantasy games, and realistic hair.

Gamers got an inside look at the upcoming "Final Fantasy XV" at an event in Paris Thursday, and there was one clear takeaway: the game's developer, Square Enix, is serious about hair.

Though the "Final Fantasy" franchise is immensely popular -- it's sold over 80 million games worldwide in its 27 years of existence -- there’s a lot riding on this latest sequel (and its hair).

In recent years, franchises from the West like "Call of Duty" have dominated the sales charts. Japanese games haven't fared, as well. "If ‘Final Fantasy XV’ doesn’t do well, perhaps there’s not much of a future for console games," FFXV co-director Hajime Tabata told Kotaku.com this summer.

So, "Final Fantasy XV" needs to look really good to lure in an audience. One way to tell that’s happening? The hair. Check out this clip from Thursday's presentation, apparently showing the process artists and developers used to form an in-game character's hair.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD - Possible PC Port

by Couchpotato, 01:12

Game Idealist has news that Square Enix might be releasing Final Fantasy Type-0 HD on Steam. This shouldn't be a surprise as they are also releasing Final Fantasy 13.

It seems like Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is coming to the PC. Amazon.it has put up a listing for the videogame, indicating that it is going to ship next year on the 20th of March. It is also the same day as the releases of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions.

The listing may not be too surprising if you look at Square Enix’s recent history. The publisher announced in September that Final Fantasy XIII is coming to the PC on the 9th of October. The two other games in the trilogy, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, are launching next spring.

For those unfamiliar with Final Fantasy Type-0, it started out as a PlayStation Portable game. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports contain much better graphics, especially with Square Enix adding in new assets. With the two next-gen system being quite similar to the PC from an architectural standpoint, a PC release was an easy decision.

Dragon Tournament - Square Collective Updates

by Couchpotato, 04:36

Ars Tactica: Dragon Tournament has two new updates on the Square Collective. The first update talks about the the games story, and give a short history lesson.

The story starts in the Realm of Loha a century after the Dragon War that confronted the kingdom and its allies against the dragons and their supporters. The conflict culminated with the banishment of the dragons which put an end to the hostilities among the realms. This brought an era of peace among humans and the Aurum Alliance, which symbolically unites all kingdoms, was established. Ever since, each decade a festival is celebrated to commemorate the event and the Dragon Tournament, a remembrance of the battles fought, is hosted in the original locations where they took place. Guilds around all the kingdoms are invited to participate and fight for the price of being granted a wish from Ryzard, the Golden King of Loha.

The second update gives information on the three main classes you can play as.

Here they come the first 3 jobs for our game, the Dark Mage a magic focused class, the Berserker a close combat specialist, and the knight an all round fighter that has very few flaws.

Square Collective - Dragon Tournament

by Couchpotato, 01:14

I received news from the developers of a new SRPG called Ars Tactica: Dragon Tournament looking for votes on the Square Collective.

As usual here is the game infomation.

Ars Tactica: Dragon Tournament is a game designed by SRPG lovers for SRPG lovers: we’re very nostalgic about the golden era of this genre and we want to bring it back while also bringing something new to the table, the targeted platforms are PC and PSVITA,

During the development and design phase on the game we mainly focused on three things:

  • Battle System: You will be fighting for the majority of the time, so we tried to make the battle and character development system deep and interesting every time: you'll have a very broad choice of customization of your characters and battles are going to be tactically challenging as well.

  • Graphics Style: We obviously want you to enjoy this experience to the maximum so we did a lot ofresearch to find artistic and technical solutions that enable us to deliver this experience in the most effective and visually pleasing way that we can.

  • Story: We know that a good story is what makes you forget that time is flowing outside when you're enjoying the gameplay experience so we're avoiding fillers and trying to keep the game universe cohesive and entertaining.

Square Collective - War of Zodiarcs

by Couchpotato, 02:34

There's a new game on the Square Collective called War of Zodiarcs looking for votes to get Squaresoft's support for a new Indiegogo campaign. Here are the details.

What is War of Zodiarcs?

War of Zodiarcs is a classic Tactical JRPG that mixes traditional tactical gameplay with the thrill of cards and dice. Follow the journey of a young hero who must lead his party into the heart of an enemy nation and learn that sometimes the burden of becoming the man everyone expects, can be too much to bear.

A game that blends Tactical JRPG, cards, and dice to create an exciting new gaming experience that requires tactical, minute-to-minute planning in every battle. Planned release for PC, console, and handheld gaming devices (PSVita & N3DS).

Why Tactical?

War of Zodiarcs is inspired by our love of tactical games like Shining Force and Final Fantasy Tactics, where you were required to think and plan ahead as your small group takes on a superiorly numbered force. In War of Zodiarcs, you determine your angle of attack, position your units, and take out your enemies in your march towards victory.
Why Cards and Dice?

We want to capture the experience of boardgames with War of Zodiarcs. Specifically, the experience of drawing cards and rolling dice. That emotional rollercoaster where you’re filled with anticipation and tension as you prepare to flip the card or throw the dice, and then fist-pump in success when you get the result you want! Or that pleasant surprise when you get something you didn’t expect but realize it opens up a whole new tactical approach that you didn’t see before...

Why JRPG?

We love JRPGs. They are what truly got us into gaming in the first place. With War of Zodiarcs, we want to stay true to what we love about JRPGs. Namely, the deep narrative with a large cast of complex and flawed characters that engage you on an emotional level, all taking place within a colorful and lore-filled world. War of Zodiarcs is a “coming of age” story that captures the hardship of growing up. Becoming an adult is not as simple as time passing; it's about responsibility, suffering, and personal sacrifice, and we want to tell that tale in War of Zodiarcs.

Square Enix - Final Fantasy XIII on The PC?

by Couchpotato, 01:14

Hardcore Gamer has news that the entire Final Fantasy XIII series might be getting a PC release on Steam. This sound possible due to Square Enix talking about it before.

If there’s one thing PC devotees have always loved, it’s playing Final Fantasy on the PC. Ever since Final Fantasy VII worked its way onto computers in the late ’90s thanks to Eidos, playing a formerly console-exclusive game in the series on PC has always been exciting. It looks like the series could be again returning to PC, as a Steam logo has appeared on the official Final Fantasy XIII site:

Final Fantasy VII - Retrospective @ EDGE

by Couchpotato, 05:41

EDGE has posted a new retrospective article for Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII’s greatest moment arrives when your party acquires an airship. From Midgar, and some local travels, the world had seemed large indeed (and by this point the average gamer would have spent days if not weeks on the game). The airship blows this all away: the world is huge, and packed full of towns, ruins and places to go and explore. It takes time to simply travel from one place to the next via airship, never mind exploring what now lies before you, and as the game unfolds the party travels to the upper limits of the atmosphere via rocket and to the bottom of the ocean via submarine. There are breeds of chocobo that allow you to cross previously closed terrain, or alternately you can breed up a racer and take him to the Gold Saucer to enter competition. It’s easy to forget that the world needs to be saved in Final Fantasy VII simply because, for once, it’s a virtual world that’s actually worth saving: the experience, and the memories, are permanent.

Next, Final Fantasy III is coming to PC. A rating by Germany’s USK board leaked the news

Final Fantasy VII - Should it be Remade?

by Couchpotato, 05:34

Gamer Attitude has a new article thats asks a simple question, and it's should Final Fantasy VII be remade for modern gamers. So what do you all think?

It’s a question I have been asking myself for a number of years. I picked up the PlayStation game back around 1997, I was young and the deep story along with the lovable characters really introduced me into gaming and I still class final fantasy VII as my all-time favourite game, even to this day. I have the game on various platforms including PC and digitally on my PS3 and Vita.  I still play it and have completed it a number of times through the years. Would I be excited for a total remake? Possibly, but a remake carries with it a basket full of pro’s and cons’s along with a ton of questions that need to be answered.
