Rebel Galaxy - Giant Bomb Quick Look [Extended HD Gameplay]

It is not as good as Freelancer from what I researched but it seem to be a fun space arcade game with good music to kill 40 hours.

I guess so. It all depends on how much you want from you space game, I suppose.

I'm pretty sure it's not for me, though.

Maybe if it had multiplayer.

It has factions and a complicated ship upgrade tree which Freelancer had. Not sure about mission diversity which is my concern but it looks like fun. Anybody know if you can visit planets like you can stations?

Don't think you can visit planets.

To me, it's about content variety and quality of content.

With such a short development time - and given the past history of these developers - I'm just not detecting the slightest hint of a modern Freelancer, except for the fact that it's a space game full of combat.

It's not really about a feature checklist - but about how much care you can have in a game that's taken little more than a year to develop by such a small team.

Freelancer was around 4 years in development by a very experienced and relatively large team. So, they had time to do things right.

This kind of development cycle simply can't produce a deep, long and satisfying space combat game.

Well, I guess it's theoretically possible - but I don't believe it for a second.

For a shallow timewaster with pretty visuals and what I assume will be a half-assed story, maybe it's perfect.

Thanks for filling me in. I had no idea the game was developed so quickly; your right to have some concerns. This video has been my first glimpse at this game and I figured it was a snapshot not the whole thing gameplay wise.

I mean it still looks like fun but its clear now its much shallower than I expected.

Keep in mind that they're just my personal observations. I haven't actually played it - and maybe it's better than I give it credit for.

But I remember much the same thing when they did Torchlight - which was exactly the same kind of "feature checklist" Diablo game, only much more shallow. People still praised it and enjoyed it, so maybe it's just me.

They did that deliberately to establish themselves as Runic Games.

It makes perfect sense that they're now establishing themselves as Double Damage Games - with exactly the same kind of short development cycle and low ambitions.

Maybe Rebel Galaxy 2 will be better, though I didn't think much of Torchlight 2. Story was abysmal and gameplay excessively repetitive. Seems to be what they're about. Combat, combat and more combat.

On the other hand, that's what people seem to want. I expect very positive reviews for it.

I'm strange in that I don't enjoy repetition a whole lot. I mean, I was sick of superhero movies after the first Iron Man. Yet, look at what's coming out almost every day. Superhero movies and TV series ALL over the place - and people still love them.

Boggles my mind, truly ;)

I hear you. Torchlight was pretty disappointing to me and my experience with it mirrors yours. I did not know the same developers were working on this game. Yes I think the sequel will perhaps have better features because Freelancer fans want a more developed game and will demand it.

Its the kind of game that needs expansions civ style to expand its scope. Perhaps this is just the start for these guys.

We'll see, I guess.

Personally, I think you need a stronger foundation to expand if you want a strong end result. I doubt this will ever be what I'd require it to be, even as a sequel.

But I'm not complaining. Not all games are for everyone, and it's not like they're charging a fortune.

I already have the space game I want in development somewhere else ;)

Good luck with that one, I hope you didn't donate too much of your money to them. You might as well went to a casino, found a nearest roulette and put it on red.

Oh, I've donated around 350$ and I'll keep donating to it.

It's the kind of scam I'm a big fan of. I just love being cheated on this level ;)

However, maybe this thread is not the best place to spread your ignorance.

Escapist and Forbes for gaming insight? Oh my…

I think even you have more gaming insight than they do.

Anyway, let's get back to topic. We have people here who'll throw a fit very soon if we keep this up.

When it comes to Star Citizen, I expect a formal apology from you when it finally arrives ;)

If it turns out to be a scam, I'll publically bow my head in shame.

Time will tell, fortunately.

That promise, in these circles, will certainly provoke a reaction similar to that for the Ig Nobel prize. First you laugh, then you go "hmmm…" ;)

I bet you won't even acknowledge saying this when you turn out to be wrong.

I have the same feeling for quite some time. Space sims are not that hard to make (no detailed landscape etc.) so many small dev studios decided to do "their own Star Citizen". But in the end they usually create something different (of course, SC is not finished so lets assume SC will be good) - generic shallow sandbox space sim. They are just bunch of workers who usually copy each other but dont dare to think about anything new or expanded. But it seems that fans have exactly the same approach. They expect the same controls, the same game mechanics, the same voice overs in each game (do you remember that stupid complains like "the hero is not voiced" for indie RPGs which are not AAA video-fests but has more text and deeper RPG mechanics etc?), the same quantity of loot, low challenge (until DS came…). So its not surprising that in the end ppl and reviewers are happy with polished generic shallow sandbox space sim. If Star Citizen is going to be much better game it really HAS to be done one day… because ppl wont dare to expect anything else than generic space sim until SC comes and clearly shows them (especially every dumbass) that it COULD be done better way.

Swen Vincke once said that RPG players need to be "educated" nowadays because they expect the same shallow ARPG mechanics in every RPG and cant use all the options and tactics etc. that Divinity: OS offers. Do you think this opinion apply only to many ARPG fans or to players in general? Or to players AND developers of generic games… ;)
