The Kickstarter campaign for City of Shroud has been cancelled.

When we launched the campaign, we had high hopes for success and wanted to do something never before done in a Kickstarter: a living story, driven by you, updated and released over the course of the campaign in a video game.

We’ve had a great time seeing the influence you’ve had on the game world and responding to it with new episodes. You’ve created scenarios we would never have imagined, and we can’t wait to take it to the next level in the main game.

Unfortunately, contributions aren’t coming in at the level we need, and it seems that we won’t be able to raise the funds necessary to hit our target this time around, so we’ve decided to cancel this Kickstarter campaign and relaunch again in April with a more focused goal and a better campaign. Since we’re withdrawing this campaign, no one will be charged.

Don’t worry - we’re still going to finish the current story campaign, you can still influence the 4th and final episode (episode 3 releases tomorrow, so act quickly!), and it’s yours to keep after the campaign too. Be sure to sign up for our mailing list to get notified as soon as episode 4 is available!

We will learn from our mistakes and improve: we want to make a video that better explains the game; we want a page that focuses on and clearly communicates what makes our game great; and we want to do a better job of engaging you, the community who are making our game possible. If you have any thoughts or opinions you’d like to share with us, please take a moment to get in touch - either on our website or on our forums! We are open to all feedback!

We love City of the Shroud and are going to make sure that it gets made. We’ll be coming back to Kickstarter with a better, more focused campaign in April, and we won’t be silent until then, either - we want to stay in touch with you, our backers. We’ll be keeping you up to date on the new launch so you can grab those early bird discounts, letting you know as new episodes of the story are available, and showing you the progress on City of the Shroud. If you haven’t signed up for the mailing list yet, go ahead and do so - we promise maximum video game awesomeness and minimum (read: zero) spam!

We’re disappointed about this campaign, but we’ll be back in 6 weeks with an all-new video - we also have a couple big announcements to make in the meantime, so stay tuned.

Thank you so much for contributing, and we hope you’ll be telling your friends about us, and that you’ll join us in April. If you want to support City of the Shroud, get in touch with us! We aren’t giving up and are really excited to share the complete game with you.
The game has already been greenlit on Steam and there is also a demo available.

Thanks Eye.

Is is the general view that Kickstarters are cancelled early so the game/product dosnt get a bad reputation or failing by the end date or is it just common practice now?

Properly maintaining a kickstarter project is a lot of work if you want to try to make it succeed. You have to keep updating it, adding content, videos, answering questions, etc. If by day 10 it doesn't look like you have a chance of making it, it's better to cancel it than to abandon the project for the final 20 days (or wasting any more resources in it).
