Curious if any Watchers are trying this? Looks interesting and Steam reactions have been very positive. (And maybe it'll be the kick in the pants I need to finish Moby Dick - which has been sitting on my shelf, half-read, for 30 years).

It's one of these books that can be hard to get into but end up being really enjoyable. I say go for it, can't leave a book half way through. ;)

It's that bit around the middle where Melville drifts off into a mini encyclopedia of aquatic wildlife that starts to drag it down. If you can get through that and try to ignore its existence, it's a good story that's certainly worth your time.

This is the secret that those who've read it will know - it's half great novel and half technical whaling manual.

Its half everything - its also part philosophy, part book of short stories, its part travellers narrative - its all over the place and would probably get a C in any college class for sticking to any one thing except its theme.

And that's the charm. Never read any abridged version of this book or you will miss the fun of its style.

Reviews are mostly positive but there are several complains about the repetitive combat.

I would agree about the book's qualities… but will also confess to having scanned at highly negligent speeds over some of the whaling treatise sections.
