Capsule Computers checked out Far Cry 5:

Far Cry 5 Review

Overview

Ubisoft is taking the latest iteration of the Far Cry series to the United States in a small town in Montana. The Project at Eden’s Gate cult has violently taken over the valley, forcing the locals to convert at gun point. In this open world shooter, players will take on the role of a rookie deputy who must unite the locals and fight back against the cult.

Story

Far Cry 5’s rural United States setting and the religious overtones create rich waters for socio-political commentary on the state of American life and religion. While Far Cry 5 manages to get a few hilarious parodies and the odd thought provoking moment, the writers never properly explore those rich waters. Instead, they opt for a safer, mass market-friendly plot that emphasizes an us versus the crazy cultists battle. The plot makes for a decent action title, but there are times where the cult’s decisions make little sense other than to give some extra screen time to flesh out the Seed family, the leaders of Eden’s Gate.

Overall

Far Cry 5 is an excellent addition to the franchise. While the writing is a bit weak due to its shallow nature, the audio/visual presentation is exactly what is expected from a major title, and the soundtrack deserves a special mention. The gameplay continues to be solid. Far Cry 5 takes an already excellent open world experience and tightens up the collection and levelling systems. The new arcade mode gives the game a ton of replayability and an outlet for budding map makers and level designers to hone their craft.

Score: 8.5/10

The big surprise for me is how easy this game is. I have only played one Far Cry (the 3°) before so I am not a specialist of Ubsioft games but I did not remember it as an easy game.

This one, beyond the 2 first hours, is really easy. I am finishing the second zone and did not meet any challenge at all in any fight or situation. The cleanup of the critical points was so easy than at first I was expecting a trap or some kind violent attack to take them back. Well, no.

Im always a sucker for farcry so i will play it at some point...but they are always so damned expensive on release...i think i’ll buy it on sale.

I love modding fallout and elder scrolls games to be as hard as possible but i like farcry as just a casual and fairly easy game that i usually dont finish but love spending time having fun with.

Well to be fair Far Cry 3 wasn't that hard. I remember setting the game on very hard difficulty just to be more immersed in the game instead of blazing through it (watching Jason getting killed over and over again felt oddly rewarding as he wasn't supposed to be another John Rambo).

There are many little things that they've changed but to me the most significant is the removal of the mini map from the HUD.

Thinking about FC3 I do miss the voiced protagonist. I guess it comes at the price of customisation but it gave the game some character.

To be honest I'm not thrilled about the setting but I find the game is incredibly fun and that's something. :)

I played Far Cry 4 only (and Far Cry 1 eons ago) and I really had fun with it. One of the first games I played in my living room via Steam Link and Controller. Once the enemies became too challenging to aim at with a touch pad, I lost interest and didn't feel like changing over to the admittedly more sensible mouse/keyboard setup in the computer room.

Fun casual open world emergent gaming and unspoiled by other Far Cry experiences, which seems to be a big issue with fans of the series. I loved taking over the radio towers and random vehicle encounters, and the animals were often surprising (I'm getting attacked by a snake? holy crap)

Anyways a lot of mixed reviews on Steam for FC5., sounds like some boneheaded design decisions. If I get the itch again I'll just revisit FC4.

It's a good game. Graphics are beautiful on ultra. Gun fights are fun and driving is very good in the game. Too early on to comment on the story. The game is really easy early going like someone mentioned already. There is a hard setting though, I'm playing on normal.
