EKGaming has reviewed the ATOM RPG:

Fallout Inspired ATOM RPG Is Out Now and Wonderful

Looking at ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game (that is the full title), most people would be struck by how much it looks like Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. In fact, it looks like a graphically updated version of either, maybe with a bit more of the realistic wastelands thrown into it. It was also inspired by a number of other early CRPGs like Baldur's Gate, and it shows.
[...]

Like many newer indie games, ATOM got its start on Kickstarter. With an original goal of just $15,000, it was funded twice over with over a thousand backers. While ATOM came out an entire year later than estimated delivery (also like most new indie games), its reception has been remarkably warm with hundreds of positive reviews. Part of this is due to the fact that it spent a year in Early Access, listening to fan complaints and recommendations, addressing concerns, and polishing the game up in every way they could imagine.

ATOM is a fantastic lovesong to old school isometric RPGs, and especially to the days before everyone was furious at Bethesda about everything.
More information.

More accolades, which doesn't surprise me at all. I'm really looking forward to just losing a month or so of time in this one when I fire it up.

I'm 25 hours in. Expect it to last a 100 hrs minimum

Me as well, I really wish I could dive in completely but "Kingmaker" still has some hours left in it for me. I know I must be pretty close to the end battle since I have traversed the entire map as well as annexed almost every region.

After that, it will be all Atom at every opportunity.

Just started playing it. My impression after a few hours is yes it an updated and improved Fallout clone. My only pet peeve is the towns and other areas are small.

Anyway expect a lot of patches and updates.

Completed the game clocking around at 40+ change hours. Did pretty much everything I could find. Working on the full review now.

Does that mean it is the best thing since apple pie or it totally sucks and has a 30 year old cumbersome interface and shallow story ?

It means it’s well executed for an indie attempt at emulating a 20 year old formula.

Personally, I find the visuals dry and somewhat dull, but the rest of the game looks like a quality Fallout made from the heart.

So, it depends on your preferences. I know we have a lot of people here who prefer gameplay from the distant past, so it should be a good fit for those.

For my part, I vastly prefer the modern Fallouts albeit with a bunch of mods to refine the experience.

PSA: Garbage cans respawn stuff
Every so often they respawn giving you the valuable scrap and wastepaper, of which you need a lot. Sometimes they even have food.

- There is no level cap
- There are infinite respawn of encounters on the world map
- Therefore you can grind xp to max out all Skills at the cap of 199 each

There's zero downside to Child Prodigy. The xp penalty is irrelevant because you can farm random encounters on the world map all you want.

The designer literally puts an enemy camp in the town that respawn every day or so.

RANDOM ENCOUNTERS: The difficulty of random encounters truly gives credit to it's name, being absolutely RANDOM. You may very well get attacked by 2 villagers with broken knives at one point and 4 armored thugs with pistols the next. You just never know. Gladly due to some stupid mistake at most times you can select attack instead of trying to avoid the encounter as the fight will not begin automatically and you'll have a chance to just walk away, because reasons.

This is not Fallout 1 nor is Fallout 2. This is Bethesda's Fallout jack of all trades master of everything grinder bullshit tossed in isometric engine with a touch of Neo Scavenger to bait codexians and FTL to bait the trend chasers.
Not buying.

Na, the question is if grinding is necessary.
I can live with “respawning“ random encounters in the world map.

It's like all those folks that say grinding in many of the Japanese games is absolutely necessary. Out of all those kinds of games that I've enjoyed playing, I've actually only needed to grind in maybe two of them, if you pay attention to the systems and how combat really functions, most of those games are not complex at all.

After the holidays are over, I'll be getting back to Disgaea Five. I've unlocked all the hidden characters that I could find, and I'll be curious to explore whether I can simply dive right into the carnage areas, or if some grinding will be necessary.

I finished the game at level 19 (did all quests and other stuff that appeared for my character) and afaik the level cap (or hard cap)is 30. In order to get to 30, you have to grind a lot but there is no point in getting that far as of now (other than an achievement). But the devs plan to add more content so there's that. At no point in the game are you forced to grind for XP. Sure there is the occasional Beef Gate or two in the map but everyone familiar with RPG structure, in general, knows how it works.
There is no enemy spawns in any of the towns, at least not anymore. I don't know why people in the forums are crying of the game being too difficult because it really isn't. The difficulty and game progression is very similar to Fallout 2.
As for random encounters, the RNG can come off as annoying when you are in the early levels but nothing that pulls you out of the game. The thing about some random encounters not beginning in a fight despite failing the check is intended imo. They don't notice you so you have the option to start the attack or run away. Like I said pointless crying in the Steam forums. I wonder how much of the game these guys even played.
I wish I could talk more but saving some stuff for the review.

Actually, first three quotes are not steam whines but hints on how to play the game. ;)
Only the last one about roguelikeness is from steam reviews.

Ayy pardon me. Got it all mixed up. Just woke up and saw this after having seeing a few unnecessary rants on the Steam forums. It's crazy how people with private accounts and doesn't even have the game thinks they know more about the game than some of the early adopters. I am however disappointed that the game only takes about 50 hrs to beat while the devs said that even on a first playthrough, it'll take around 120 hrs.
