A Tale in the Desert is a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game set in ancient Egypt. The game doesn't feature any kind of combat but instead it focuses on society as a gameplay element. Economic development is a crucial part of the game as well as socializing is. A Tale in the Desert is in many ways a very atypical MMORPG, which is also the reason to why it only has a few thousand subscribers. These players are very dedicated though, which combined with the nature of the game, results in a friendly atmosphere between players.

A Tale in the Desert has been released through "Tellings". The first was released in 2003 and the latest being Telling IV released in December 2008. Each Telling have added new features and content to the game. Furthermore every Telling marks the start of a new game.
