Obsidian Entertainment has updated Pentiment, fixing a number of annoying issues:

1.1 Patch Notes

We are happy to let you all know that patch 1.1 for Pentiment is now available to download. This patch includes the following:

  • Endris has a new minigame that can be found at the beginning of Act 1
  • Logic issue with the Final Day of Law and Judgment has been fixed to prevent people from being condemned if they were never accused
  • Telling Father Gernot your evidence against a character in Act II will no longer automatically prevent you from speaking with that character in the future. There is now a Persuade check in place that can allow the conversation to continue.
  • Credits have been adjusted and updated to contain various additions and fixes
  • Parallax has been added to the meadow
  • Credits speed can now be adjusted, speeding up, slowing down, pausing, or reversing
  • You can now skip the intro
  • Created hybrid input option that keeps mouse active when using keyboard and mouse
  • Added an instant dialogue display option
  • Fixed bugs with the input mapper
  • Various Bug Fixes and Improvements
Heads-up from Redglyph: there were several reports of the game being stuck in a "Loading..." loop when launching the game, right after updating. This procedure solves the problem:

  1. disable Steam Cloud for this game (right-click on the game, properties, "Keep games saves in the Steam Cloud for Pentiment")
  2. delete this file, or move it to a safe backup place:
    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Obsidian Entertainment\Pentiment\CloudSync\InputMapGameplay.dat
  3. launch the game
  4. quit the game
  5. enable Steam Cloud again
More information.

A few good changes for me there, especially
  • keyboard + mouse, at last
  • instantaneous display of text: seeing the text begin drawn and typos being corrected was kind of cute but tiresome after a while
I suppose it's a good time to start playing it for people who were waiting. Maybe there's time to squeeze a run before the fee update of TW3 (maybe 2 before they fix the bugs).

Mouse and keyboard, yeah, honestly I believe any game available through either GoG/steam should at least have those options. And likely more updates/patches to follow.

At least one hotfix, or at least they should.

I'm surprised how slow the support is. They don't answer in the Steam forums (their own forums is bugged) and from what I've understood after exchanging a few emails, they don't really read them anyway.

They answer to emails quickly enough, but it takes ages to fix simple things like this basic K+M that many were complaining about. Or I've sent them all the information for this new launch bug right after the update, along with the work-around but I've seen no hotfix.

Not a priority for them obviously so I don't think the sales are huge, which seems to be confirmed by the scores (1269 reviews after one month). They're "overwhelmingly positive" though.

Well Obsidian is known for buggy games, and this was a small budget side project. Anyway don't want to be a Debbie downer again but most resources are on other larger games.

So far I had only played games long after their release, except NWN2 which was mostly OK for me at launch. I wasn't expecting that in a small game which was a pet project. It happens, and it would be more acceptable if they were showing some good will about it, but it's utter silence and we've only seen 1 patch which makes it impossible to launch the game for some players.

I'm surprised the score is "overwhelming positive", but that's probably a side effect of the stupid binary score... you don't want to give a thumb down to a beautiful and interesting game.

Well, I did. :p
