Hey everyone.

I'm very impressed with the RPGMaker RPG, Last Dream. It's an ode to the early Final Fantasy games, yet it is very much a "neo-retro" kind of game that has many new and interesting features.

Has anyone here played it? I'd heartily recommend it if you're in the mood for a classic style JRPG, yet still want something modern.

It's got some really satisfying features like free character stat and skill customization, hundreds of achievements, a large, open-world to explore, distinct character classes, a full Bestiary and more.

Oh yeah, the game is HUGE. And there is plenty of optional content to consume if you so choose, as well as a fun and inviting main story. Lots of intrigue in this one, I recommend it.

You're welcome! :)

It's definitely cozy, which I love. There is a lot of trickery going on and very clever devs that have crafted a true labor of love. I really enjoy it. :)

My party is:

Engineer
White Mage
Thief
Knight

Engineer is a utility class that specializes in item use and tunneling, which is a nice way to find secret loot stashes and save time when travelling. Thieves can steal from enemies as well as pick locks in towns without worry of citizens calling the guards. Yes, there is even a crime system in the game. Take a Thief with you to bypass it. :)

Hard difficulty is actually hard and the game seems very well balanced. It also feels like a professional project with a very high attention to detail. Surprisingly great. :)

Thanks for the gift Fluent. I'll try to find some more free time to play this next month.

Hey Fluent, my wife had a question that she wanted to ask you.

She was looking over my shoulder at the game and wanted to know if it would work on her Android phone, since it doesn't look very demanding in terms of system requirements and stuff. I told her that you have an Android tablet and that I'd ask you. :)

Hey. There is no Android version of the game. I play on my tablet but it's streaming from my PC.

Apparently, with Last Dream II they hope to do a mobile port.

Ah. Thank you!

And I'm so sorry for editing your post! You probably think I'm a terrible human being. Nothing ended up changed, I promise, and I won't do that again. :(

Enjoy! It's really great. :)

You can do so many different things in the game, it's really quite expansive. Last night I was just exploring and ended up joining a bandit group that has actual bandit-type quests to undertake. I also joined a Hunter's Guild that hunts rare monsters. I traded for a ship that I now own and can sail around with, and even explored a deserted island for the king (which was completely optional and somewhat hidden. You had to do something specific to trigger the quest). There is a fun crafting system in the game and I was collecting materials to sell the excess of, but also to create new items that I have recipes for.

The game is really impressive. It's a labor of love, that is for sure.

You're welcome, Couch! I hope you enjoy it when you play it. :)

Grabbed this one this morning, thanks for the thread convincing me to do so. I'll be trying it out just as soon as I finish the Quest.

No problem. Glad it convinced you, heh. You'll have to let me know what you think of The Quest because that's another game I am seriously interested in. Heard it plays like a turn-based Morrowind.

More Last Dream musings incoming... :)

The writing is actually really solid and natural-sounding. Get this - NPCs in the game world react to various events with new things to say! If you've never experienced this in a classic JRPG before, be prepared to be delighted. Example:

I walk upstairs in a pub and there is a guy walking around who says he has been trying to pick the lock on the chest in this room for ages now. You can pick the lock, get the treasure and then talk to him again. Now, he'll say how impressed he was that you were able to pick it and that you should teach him the technique sometime. A small detail, but the game is littered with this sort of thing.

Nearly every NPC in the game has personality and something interesting to say, if not multiple things. I find myself talking to people over and over again because you never know what information or little quirk awaits in the dialogue. Even visiting towns you've already explored, the NPCs are most likely going to say something different based on events that have happened in the world. Amazing attention to detail here.

The economy in the game, 8 hours in, is tightly balanced. Gold is somewhat hard to come by at first, and the game does a good job of giving you just enough of it that you'll have to make some tough decisions. Do you buy a few expensive High Potions or a new shield for your knight? I have, however, made quite a bit of gold as the game goes on by doing various bounty contracts and side quests. Great stuff.

Every new piece of gear and how you develop your characters is very important and makes a noticeable difference. I was struggling with certain enemies heavily during a side quest, but when I got a full set of mithril armor as a reward, all of a sudden those same enemies couldn't even scratch me. Same goes for weapons. It seemed that my Thief and Engineer were destined to be weak melee fighters until I found them good weaponry. Now, they can deal decent damage and I am building their attack with the character development. Also, you can have a wide variety of builds, all based on how you outfit your characters and how you craft them. You can have a White Mage who does massive melee damage, for example, and craft all sorts of unique builds. However, you should probably stick somewhat closely to the "base rules" of character development to craft a party that can hold its own on the harder difficulties.

The game is a virtual playground of interesting RPG ideas. I haven't played the early Final Fantasy games recently, but Last Dream feels like a completely unique experience. It's old-school yet it's completely fresh and new. Good stuff.

This game is seriously amazing.

Every townsperson has a ton to say. Yes, I said that above, but my goodness there is a lot of that in the game. The game feels alive because things happen in the world and the townsfolk react and offer new information. Sometimes important, sometimes quirky and always fun. It's a treat. And it always goes further down the rabbit hole. How deep does it go? The game plays to this effect and is a treat for your imagination. So much wild exploration and lore abounds.

I see there are areas that you can explore that are way too much to handle at your current level. I just ventured to a seemingly deserted isle, only to encounter dragons and hydras which destroyed me in two shots. Save often is the lesson here. :)

I'm still at an early part in the game where I have ship access, and there are a bunch of different ways I can go. Small islands, entire continents and more to explore whenever you feel like you want to. I even uncovered some strange mystical cave on an island that tests my strength and seems to hold some serious secrets. There is an arena somewhere in the game to earn some coin fighting monsters, and even a casino somewhere. There's even rumors that the ancient Elven civilization had created a vehicle that can travel under the water. Oh, and there seems to be an airship hidden somewhere. How cool!

I recently got a sonar device that can find treasures hidden deep beneath the surface. And of course, there are plenty of treasure maps to find that lead to some very useful treasures. And a Thieve's Guild in case you get in trouble with the law, and the Hunter's Guild keeps adding new contracts, and the Bandits Guild where you can steal from people, and a million recipes to synthesize new and powerful equipment, and, and, and...

There's a LOT of content here and it's almost staggering. This game has some serious attention to detail and a huge amount of pure LOVE poured into it that it's really surprising to me. I was expecting a game similar to the early Final Fantasy games, but this game is so huge that it's much more than that. It's a game for fans of early JRPGs but adds so many features that are awesome to find in any RPG, let alone a classic JRPG styled one.

There's some mind-bending puzzles in the game as well. I've apparently completed 12 of them thus far, and they range from pretty simple to "I couldn't figure out how to do it" for a couple of them. Fun stuff!

I'm probably repeating myself a bit here and rambling but the game really is that good. It's my favorite RPGMaker RPG, by far, although Laxius Force is also a really good game.

Can't wait to see what they do with the second game in the series, as well as the expansion. These devs now have my full attention for future projects, that's for sure. :)
