Thanks for the detailed response. I think this kind of transparency and frankness is what's needed for Kickstarters.
This makes more sense to me. In this case, the Kickstarter is not strictly essential, as you would carry on to Steam sales without it, but it's still very helpful to your small studio. It is probably best understood as being part and parcel of the early-access sales drive and promotion, and that these early sales will fund the final completion of the game.
I guess it is open to the criticism of paying to beta test, but you've explained what you're doing and the difficulties of small indie development. I now understand the way in which I would be supporting you if I backed the project. I wish you all the best.
