Timothy Cain - What is an RPG?

Yeah well good luck with that man. Better developer's have tried before.

We can't even agree what an RPG is on a site made to cover RPGs.

Sure the checklist is a good way to deconsruct what an RPG should be, but here's the kicker. Almost every game in any genre has adopted RPG element's. Good luck.

Does anyone remember the idea Tim had awhile ago to make an RPG that uses shapes instead of numerical stats?

Imagine the balls you have to have trying to tell people YOU know what an RPG is in 2024.

"durrrrr being able to name my character is the first thing!", LOL

What's so difficult? It's a game. It has action mechanics. It has progression and possibly a story beyond "Narrative 101". We can figure it out neural networks and we cannot tell what kind of game we play?

I think that's because there's never been an official definition (*), yet aficionados all have their own view about the features that make up an RPG, according to their experience. Like Tim above and other influencers... and many of us.

The fact that the usage changes with time adds to the confusion.

(*) We know the origin, but it was before the video games.

Card-based RPGs are the only ones apart from numerical ones.
